Why Can't We Wait (To Spend) And The Law Of Unintended Consequences: Potential Negative Impact On Minority Employees From Well-Intentioned Organizational Compensation Practices, James R. Jones Oct 2001

Why Can't We Wait (To Spend) And The Law Of Unintended Consequences: Potential Negative Impact On Minority Employees From Well-Intentioned Organizational Compensation Practices, James R. Jones

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 6th Annual National Conference (2001)

The presenter outlines a theoretical argument suggesting that organizational attempts to increase short- and long-term motivation and loyalty may unwittingly exacerbate career and financial growth problems for some "minority" workers. Research on ethnic cultural tendencies and individual differences in spending propensities is used to support the notion that the use of incentive-based compensation systems and retirement programs could lead to employees being both undermined in terms of financial health and "slotted" into divergent career paths.

The specifics of this policy and how it may be used as a model for other predominantly white institutions are discussed.

Sobreviviendo The White Corn Fields: Chicanas And Latinas In Predominantly White Institutions, Amelia M. L. Montes Oct 2001

Sobreviviendo The White Corn Fields: Chicanas And Latinas In Predominantly White Institutions, Amelia M. L. Montes

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 6th Annual National Conference (2001)

Graduate students are often reminded that acquiring a job in the academic field often demands living far from family and familiar surroundings. For minority doctoral students—specifically Chicanas and Latinas from the West and Southwest–who accept academic positions in Midwest and Eastern predominantly white institutions, the job may test familial cultural beliefs and affect faculty recruitment and retention. I argue that institutions must better understand the needs of new minority faculty hires. This session will explore the personal and professional necessities that both the predominantly white institutions and the Chicana/Latina must consider in order to be successful in recruitment, hiring and …

Are Time-Honored Traditions Of Predominantly White Institutions Added Barriers To Integration For Students Of Color? The Challenges Of Integration In The New Millennium, Gail Shorter Judson Ph.D.

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 6th Annual National Conference (2001)

This session presents a framework for implementing diversity initiatives in century-old organizations located in rural communities. By utilizing “change agents” composed of faculty mentors for students of color and an inclusive committee, the campus community starts the process of diffusing the "valuing diversity" initiative into its social system. This process brings into focus the challenges and limitations of time-honored traditions for predominantly white institutions when encountering the "traditions-of-struggle" for people of color. The process examines the pervasiveness of student concerns by utilizing qualitative and quantitative research methods. The impact on recruitment and retention of students, faculty and staff of color …

Engaging In Difficult Dialogues Beyond Color: Where Do You Draw The Line Between Race, Gender And Authority In The Classroom?, Safoura A. Boukari

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 6th Annual National Conference (2001)

Grounding the discussion in Check Anta Diop’s Cradle theory, this paper invites us for a critical thinking and questioning of the very existence, the relevance of the color concept itself alongside the negative and detrimental impacts color has on, especially, Black women in academia. Historical, anthropological, scientific findings and theorists of the “Monogenesis” like, Asa G. Hilliard III (Free Your Mind: Return to the Source) traced the human origin back to a single human being, a woman, more than 10.000 years ago. In reference to the current trend, skin color could be defined as nothing, but the result of an …
