Center for Urban Research and Learning: Publications and Other Works
Since its founding in 1985, Deborah's Place has provided shelter, food, resources, and support to women in Chicago who are homeless or formerly homeless. Following its mission to provide services "so that women can become empowered to take back and maintain control over their lives," Deborah's Place has achieved an impressive track record by providing a continuum of programs and services which range from basic needs to permanent supportive housing. It has been the lifeline for women who, for any number of reasons, lack the fundamental resources for sustaining basic needs and achieving a better quality of life. Over three …

A Robotic Wide-Angle Hα Survey Of The Southern Sky, John E. Gaustad, P. R. Mccullough, W. Rosing, D. Van Buren
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works
We have completed a robotic wide-angle imaging survey of the southern sky (delta = +15 degrees to -90 degrees) at 656.3 nm wavelength, the H alpha emission line of hydrogen. Each image of the resulting Southern H alpha Sky Survey Atlas (SHASSA) covers an area of the sky 13 degrees square at an angular resolution of approximately 0.'8 and reaches a sensitivity level of 2 R (1.2 x 10(-17) ergs cm(-2) s(-1) arcsec(-2)) pixel(-1), corresponding to an emission measure of 4 cm(-6) pc and to a brightness temperature for microwave free-free emission of 12 muK at 30 GHz. The proliferation of nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) weapons poses major strategic and operational challenges to the United States and an important political challenge to the international community. In the hands of hostile states, these weapons threaten stability in key regions, put U.S. forces at risk, and undermine the U.S. ability to project power and to reassure friends and allies. Increasingly, the American homeland is at risk as well. U.S. intelligence officials routinely warn that more than a dozen states are actively pursuing offensive chemical or biological weapons programs. Moreover, the 1998 Indian and Pakistani nuclear tests, as well as …

Twice a year, in the May and November issues, RTE publishes a selected bibliography of recent research in literacy education, Most of the studies appeared during the six-month period preceding the compilation of the bibliography (January through June, 2001 for the present bibliography), but studies that appeared earlier are occasionally included. The listing is selective;; we make no attempt to include all research and research-related articles that appeared in the period tinder review Comments on the bibliography and suggestions about items for inclusion may be directed to the bibliography editors. Brief 10: Lessons On Supporting Change Through Multi-Institutional Projects, New England Resource Center For Higher Education, University Of Massachusetts Boston
New England Resource Center for Higher Education Publications
The New England Resource Center for Higher Education’s (NERCHE) Civic Engagement Cluster1 is a multi-institutional model for strengthening civic engagement in higher education across ten institutions simultaneously. Reflecting NERCHE’s mission to promote community, collaboration, and change in higher education, the Cluster is based on the premise that significant change can be accomplished most effectively through collaboration and communication across institutions. The purpose of this Brief is to pass on some key lessons learned in the pilot year of this project about laying the groundwork for collaboration and improving institutional practice.
Moisture Problems In Manufactured Housing: Probable Causes And Cures, Florida Solar Energy Center, Neil Moyer
Moisture Problems In Manufactured Housing: Probable Causes And Cures, Florida Solar Energy Center, Neil Moyer
FSEC Energy Research Center®
A significant number of new manufactured houses built to HUD code and located in the hot, humid Southeast are experiencing moisture problems. Soft wallboards, buckled floors, damaged wood molding and extensive mold growth are the most common symptoms. These problems do not respond to the standard service and repair strategies for water intrusion
At the request of four manufacturers, over twenty-five such moisture damaged homes were investigated in 1999 and 2000 to determine likely causes. One time blower door, duct tightness and pressure differential measurements were performed on all homes. Field data on ambient, crawlspace, belly and house temperatures and …

U.S.-Saudi Relations: Rebuilding The Strategic Consensus, Joseph Mcmillan
U.S.-Saudi Relations: Rebuilding The Strategic Consensus, Joseph Mcmillan
Strategic Forums
This Strategic Forum examines the strain in U.S.-Saudi relations and outlines steps to rebuild a shared strategic foundation in the aftermath of shifting regional dynamics and rising tensions. It argues that the partnership, long rooted in mutual security interests, has been weakened by political, military, and societal pressures, including the challenges of sustaining U.S. military presence and differing priorities in the Middle East. The paper emphasizes Saudi Arabia’s critical role in U.S. efforts to address regional instability and counter terrorism, while highlighting the sensitivities surrounding sovereignty and legitimacy within the Kingdom. It proposes rebuilding consensus through clearer strategic alignment, improved …
