Getting Over The Magical Hump: Placement Decisions And Emotional Survival For Child Welfare Workers, Nancy Colleen Freymond Nov 2001

Getting Over The Magical Hump: Placement Decisions And Emotional Survival For Child Welfare Workers, Nancy Colleen Freymond

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

This paper explores the crown wardship process from the perspective of the child welfare worker. It is based on a qualitative analysis of interviews with child welfare workers who have been involved in the process of identifying children for crown wardship, in giving chances to mothers to demonstrate parenting ability, and finally, in negotiating and formalizing crown wardship agreements. The paper also explores how workers construct identities which allow them to cope with the emotional strains of this work.

To Walk The Earth In Safety 3rd Edition (Fy2001), Us Dos Pm/Wra

Global CWD Repository

The United States first became involved in humanitarian demining in 1988 when it sent a team to assess the landmine situation in Afghanistan. Five years later, U.S. demining-related programs were underway in Afghanistan and seven other countries. By the end of 2001, we will have provided more than $500 million to 38 countries, as well as the Province of Kosovo and northwest Somalia, for various humanitarian demining efforts such as deminer training, mine awareness and mine clearance, as well as orthopedic assistance to, and socioeconomic reintegration programs for, landmine accident survivors and their families. Almost $100 million of this amount …

The Human Approach To World Peace, His Holiness The Dalai Lama Nov 2001

The Human Approach To World Peace, His Holiness The Dalai Lama

Peace and Conflict Studies

Excerpt

When we rise in the morning and listen to the radio or read the newspaper, we are confronted with the same sad news: violence, crime, wars and disasters. I cannot recall a single day without a report of something terrible happening somewhere. Even in these modern times it is clear that one’s precious life is not safe. No former generation has had to experience so much bad news as we face today; this constant awareness of fear and tension should make any sensitive and compassionate person question seriously the progress of our modern world.

Interactions Between Shoal Size And Conformity In Guppy Social Foraging, Rachel L. Day, Tom Macdonald, Culum Brown, Kevin N. Laland, Simon M. Reader Nov 2001

Interactions Between Shoal Size And Conformity In Guppy Social Foraging, Rachel L. Day, Tom Macdonald, Culum Brown, Kevin N. Laland, Simon M. Reader

Sentience Collection

Previous experimental studies have established that shoaling fish forage more effectively in large than small groups. We investigated how shoal size affects the foraging efficiency of laboratory populations of the guppy, Poecilia reticulata, exposed to different foraging tasks. Experiment 1 confirmed the prediction that in open water the first fish and focal fish of larger shoals locate food faster than in smaller shoals. However, a second experiment, in which shoals of fish were required to swim through a hole in an opaque partition to locate food, found the reverse pattern: smaller shoals learned to complete the task faster than large …

Changing Times, Changing Relationships: An Exploration Of The Relationship Between Superintendents And Boards Of Education, George J. Petersen, Lance D. Fusarelli Nov 2001

Changing Times, Changing Relationships: An Exploration Of The Relationship Between Superintendents And Boards Of Education, George J. Petersen, Lance D. Fusarelli

Graduate Studies in Education

Historically in the United States, states have delegated much of their authority over educational policy to local school districts. However, reform and restructuring efforts as well as a weakening economy have placed enormous political and financial pressure on schools to do more with less, yet continue to demonstrate effective leadership at the district level. Research literature focused on district leadership indicates that the relationship between the superintendent and board of education has a significant impact on the quality of a district's educational program.

This conceptual paper explores the implications of three distinct trends on the relationship between superintendents and boards …

Purchasing Power Parity And Interest Parity In The Laboratory, Eric O'N. Fisher Nov 2001

Purchasing Power Parity And Interest Parity In The Laboratory, Eric O'N. Fisher

Economics

This paper analyses purchasing power parity and uncovered interest parity in the laboratory. It finds strong evidence that purchasing power parity, covered interest parity, and uncovered interest parity hold. Subjects are endowed with an intrinsically useless (green) currency that can be used to purchase another useless (red) currency. Green goods can be bought only with green currency, and red goods can be bought only with red currency. The foreign exchange markets are organized as call markets. In the treatment analysing purchasing power parity, the price of the red good varies. In a second treatment, the interest rate on red currency …

Shared Scientific Thinking In Everyday Parent-Child Activity, Kevin Crowley, Maureen A. Callanan, Jennifer Jipson, Jodi Galco, Karen Topping, Jeff Shrager Nov 2001

Shared Scientific Thinking In Everyday Parent-Child Activity, Kevin Crowley, Maureen A. Callanan, Jennifer Jipson, Jodi Galco, Karen Topping, Jeff Shrager

Psychology and Child Development

Current accounts of the development of scientific reasoning focus on individual children's ability to coordinate the collection and evaluation of evidence with the creation of theories to explain the evidence. This observational study of parent–child interactions in a children's museum demonstrated that parents shape and support children's scientific thinking in everyday, nonobligatory activity. When children engaged an exhibit with parents, their exploration of evidence was observed to be longer, broader, and more focused on relevant comparisons than children who engaged the exhibit without their parents. Parents were observed to talk to children about how to select and encode appropriate evidence …

“Making-Face, Making-Heart”: The Spiritual Foundations Of An Indigenous Pedagogy, Ralph Casas Nov 2001

“Making-Face, Making-Heart”: The Spiritual Foundations Of An Indigenous Pedagogy, Ralph Casas

Journal of Hispanic / Latino Theology

The author argues for the construction of pedagogical strategies that respect the learner’s context and cognitive framework, aiming for the development of an indigenous ecology of education. He brings the insights of Latin American and U.S. Latino/a theology into consideration, suggesting that the dialogue between Christian and indigenous Mesoamerican religious traditions can be both productive and practical.

Interpreting Fracture Patterns In Sandstones Interbedded With Ductile Strata At The Salt Valley Anticline, Arches National Park, Utah, John C. Lorenz, Scott P. Cooper Nov 2001

Interpreting Fracture Patterns In Sandstones Interbedded With Ductile Strata At The Salt Valley Anticline, Arches National Park, Utah, John C. Lorenz, Scott P. Cooper

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

Sandstones that overlie or that are interbedded with evaporitic or other ductile strata commonly contain numerous localized domains of fractures, each covering an area of a few square miles. Fractures within the Entrada Sandstone at the Salt Valley Anticline are associated with salt mobility within the underlying Paradox Formation. The fracture relationships observed at Salt Valley (along with examples from Paleozoic strata at the southern edge of the Holbrook basin in northeastern Arizona, and sandstones of the Frontier Formation along the western edge of the Green River basin in southwestern Wyoming), show that although each fracture domain may contain consistently …

Fisheries Research Report No. 130 - Environmental Requirements And Tolerances Of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) And Brown Trout (Salmo Trutta) With Special Reference To Western Australia: A Review, Brett W. Molony Nov 2001

Fisheries Research Report No. 130 - Environmental Requirements And Tolerances Of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) And Brown Trout (Salmo Trutta) With Special Reference To Western Australia: A Review, Brett W. Molony

Fisheries Research Reports

Both Oncorhynchus mykiss (rainbow trout) and Salmo trutta (brown trout) have a long history of translocation and culture and a wide knowledge base exists. O.mykiss is being considered as a candidate for inland aquaculture in the salinity affected areas of southern Western Australia and this review aims, in part, at providing relevant information to those considering a trout-framing venture in Western Australia. Both species of trout can survive a wide range of environmental conditions, including temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen and ammonia, with O.mykiss having a higher temperature tolerance than S.trutta. However, within the ranges of environmental conditions, each species …

Modeling Control Of Hiv Infection Through Structured Treatment Interruptions With Recommendations For Experimental Protocol, Shannon Kubiak, Heather Lehr, Rachel Levy, Todd Moeller, Albert Parker, Edward Swim Nov 2001

Modeling Control Of Hiv Infection Through Structured Treatment Interruptions With Recommendations For Experimental Protocol, Shannon Kubiak, Heather Lehr, Rachel Levy, Todd Moeller, Albert Parker, Edward Swim

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Highly Active Anti-Retroviral Therapy (HAART) of HIV infection has significantly reduced morbidity and mortality in developed countries. However, since these treatments can cause side effects and require strict adherence to treatment protocol, questions about whether or not treatment can be interrupted or discontinued with control of infection maintained by the host immune system remain to be answered. We present sensitivity analysis of a compartmental model for HIV infection that allows for treatment interruptions, including the sensitivity of the compartments themselves to our parameters as well as the sensitivity of the cost function used in parameter estimation. Recommendations are made about …
