Sex Differences In Mechanical Aptitude: An Investigation Of Sex Differences In Mechanical Aptitude And Its Relation To Nonverbal Abilities, Karolina E. Christensson Ringby
Sex Differences In Mechanical Aptitude: An Investigation Of Sex Differences In Mechanical Aptitude And Its Relation To Nonverbal Abilities, Karolina E. Christensson Ringby
All Volumes (2001-2008)
This study investigates sex differences in mechanical abilities. Numerous research findings support the existence of sex differences in mechanical aptitude as well as in other abilities. Recent research suggests that there is a relationship between mechanical aptitude and certain nonverbal reasoning (e.g., visual-spatial) abilities. Due to the possible links between these constructs, sex differences in a nonverbal measure of general intellectual functioning, made up of five subtests, were also evaluated. Thus, the purpose of this study is twofold: to investigate sex differences in mechanical aptitude and nonverbal abilities, and to explore the construct validity of all the measures employed. Females …
The Effects Of Sex Of Subject And Sex Of Target On The Perceived Humor Of Male And Female-Targeted Jokes, Danielle Curry
The Effects Of Sex Of Subject And Sex Of Target On The Perceived Humor Of Male And Female-Targeted Jokes, Danielle Curry
All Volumes (2001-2008)
It was hypothesized that males will rate female-targeted jokes as more humorous than male-targeted jokes. Similarly, females will rate male-targeted jokes as more humorous than female-targeted jokes. It is also predicted that males with favorable attitudes toward women, as measured by the Attitudes Toward Women Scale, will rate female-targeted jokes as less humorous than males with unfavorable attitudes toward women. Females with favorable attitudes toward women are predicted to rate female-targeted jokes as less humorous than females with unfavorable attitudes toward women. Males with favorable attitudes toward public policies aimed at reducing inequalities between the sexes, as measured by the …

Reactivity To Social And Nonsocial Challenges In Anolis Carolinensis, Sheetal Vyas
All Volumes (2001-2008)
This study is the first of its kind to observe reactivity style, an individual's consistent response to stress, in a non-mammalian vertebrate species. The responses to social and acute nonsocial stressors were investigated using Anolis carolinensis, a small arboreal lizard native to the Southeastern United States. Patterns of stress responses across various contexts were identified. The social stressor involved introducing one lizard to another, while the nonsocial stressors consisted of a Novelty and Restraint test. The lizards' behaviors, perch site selections, and skin color changes were recorded throughout each test. The results demonstrate that the perch height was the …

Earl Washington's Ordeal, Eric M. Freedman
Hofstra Law Review
By way of preface to this Symposium, I offer an account of the ordeal of Earl Washington, who-having come within days of execution-was released from prison on February 12, 2001, after DNA evidence of his innocence finally proved conclusive to the Virginia authorities. I do so for two reasons.
First, I believe, both as a member of his legal team and a scholar, that history deserves an accurate account of the events. Second, more broadly, I believe that the case exemplifies many of the phenomena that contribute to the injustice of the death penalty in America today, and that its …

Factors Affecting Adherence To Antiretroviral Therapy In Hiv Positive Injection Drug Users (Idus) And Non-Idus., Dipti R. Salgaonkar
Factors Affecting Adherence To Antiretroviral Therapy In Hiv Positive Injection Drug Users (Idus) And Non-Idus., Dipti R. Salgaonkar
Open Access Master's Theses
The study of adherence to antiretroviral therapy among HIV positive Injection Drug Users (IDUs) has been largely neglected. Many clinicians believe that this group is too unreliable to take these medications, particularly in the early stage of their recovery from drug abuse when they are vulnerable to relapse. This is the first study of its kind to compare medication adherence rates between HIV positive injection drug users and non-users.
The medication adherence among IDUs and non-IDUs was compared in an HIV infected population (n=143) who were currently on antiretroviral therapy. The factors affecting medication adherence were also examined in the …

Predictors Of Patient Reported Medication Adherence To Antiretroviral Therapy, Zlata Cerimagic
Open Access Master's Theses
The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) caused by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is still a significant public health problem. In the United States approximately 1,000,000 people live with HIV/AIDS infection.4The recommended treatment is HAART (highly active antiretroviral therapy). The HAART treatment is very complex, because of a large number of prescribed drugs in a regimen, frequent dosing and also a number of side effects. In HIV management precise adherence13,26 to the prescribed medication regimen is the key for the maximal viral suppression and improved health status, and the only way to turn this deadly disease into a manageable chronic disease. …

Petitions For Life: Executive Clemency In Missouri Death Penalty Cases, Cathleen Burnett
Petitions For Life: Executive Clemency In Missouri Death Penalty Cases, Cathleen Burnett
Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest
The thesis of this article is that low reversal rates mean serious errors are not being detected and corrected. The research will focus on Missouri, which has very low reversal rates of 15% in federal court and 20% in state court. The data to address this question comes from the clemency petitions submitted to the governor as the last step in the process of executing the death penalty. These petitions illustrate the range and magnitude of the claims of legal problems in one state. The clemency petitions provide the most complete and full statement of the condemned's case, because these …

Through The Looking Glass Of Teaching: The Death Penalty And The Political Culture Of Detached Passions, Adelaide H. Villmoare
Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest
Today, despite daily struggles in courtrooms against capital punishment, there appears little legal room to challenge the death penalty. Most constitutional questions appear "settled. Given the present composition of the Supreme Court, there is scant expectation of any major reversals. Also, the Court's future is to be decided by a President who was governor of a state that has executed more people since 1976 than any other state in the nation. While abolitionist scholars and activists continue to raise constitutional issues, the most dramatic events challenging the death penalty have occurred in the larger political arena outside the courtroom. The …

Minnie Low was a leader among the Chicago women who worked in social reform and social service between 1890 and 1920. Low was born in New York City, the second child of six in a Jewish family. Her parents' names, occupations, and country of birth are unknown. When she was ten years old, the family moved to Chicago, where she finished elementary school. She attended South Division High School for less than a year and left school because she was in poor health.
Low's first recorded job was as HANNAH SOLOMON's secretary, when Solomon was organizing the Jewish Women's Congress …

Risk, Trust, And Technology In The Aftermath Of The Terrorist Attacks Of September 11, 2001., Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
The fatal facts of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, are now well known to us, and they will undoubtedly form an indelible chapter in the national history of the United States .... During the past few days, each of us has tried to understand this heinous event, to come to grips with it emotionally, and each of us has responded in understandably human ways: with disbelief, despair, and great sadness. Collectively, we empathize with grieving families personally unknown to us, we offer prayers for our nation's leaders, and we watch with hope and admiration as the rescue and recovery teams continue …

The Effects Of A High-Risk Environment On The Sexual Victimization Of Homeless And Runaway Youth, Kimberly A. Tyler, Les B. Whitbeck, Dan R. Hoyt, Ana Mari Cauce
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Based on the structural-choice theory of victimization, the current study examines the effects of a high-risk environment on the sexual victimization of 311 homeless and runaway youth. Results from logistic regression revealed that survival sex, gender, and physical appearance were significantly associated with sexual victimization. Results from a series of interactions also revealed that the effects of deviant behaviors on sexual victimization varied by gender and age. Although males and females engaged in similar activities, young women were more likely to be victims of sexual assault. These findings suggest that engaging in high-risk behaviors predispose some people to greater risks …

Planet Asian America, Mari J. Matsuda
Planet Asian America, Mari J. Matsuda
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
In forming the Asian Law Caucus, the elders - some of whom are here in this room - chose resistance. They created a space in which Asian Americans were in charge, deciding what mattered to them and what strategies worked for them. If someone else were in charge, things would have gone differently. Risks were taken, and victories were won that would not have happened using traditional litigation strategies or leaving the work to traditional civil rights organizations. It was important to create an Asian American space to do this work: to fight Chinatown evictions, to pursue redress for the …

Dealing With The Risks And Responsibilities Of Landmines And Their Clearance, Michael Polkinghorne, James Cockayne
Dealing With The Risks And Responsibilities Of Landmines And Their Clearance, Michael Polkinghorne, James Cockayne
Fordham International Law Journal
Part I of this Essay addresses the issues of State responsibility for landmine removal. Part II discusses the various legal issues that landmine removal programs present. It does so by examining: (1) the international obligations that exist; (2) the domestic legal considerations; and (3) some of the issues facing governments who wish to remove landmines by the common measure of contracting out such work to third parties. The central question Part II considers is whether and how States can transfer the risks associated with landmine clearance to contractors.
The Right Of A Minor In Israel To Participate In The Decision-Making Process Concerning His Or Her Medical Treatment, Yehiel S. Kaplan
The Right Of A Minor In Israel To Participate In The Decision-Making Process Concerning His Or Her Medical Treatment, Yehiel S. Kaplan
Fordham International Law Journal
The Article raises questions concerning the validity of the age of eighteen years as the youngest age allowing independent consent of a minor in Israel to his or her medical treatment. One of the primary suggestions in the Article is that there is a need to apply the informed consent doctrine to the medical treatment of Israeli and other minors who possess the appropriate capacities deemed necessary for comprehending the full implication of their consent. The authors believe that the doctrine of “developing capacities,” as formulated in Article 12 of the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, to …
Competing Frameworks For Assessing Contemporary Holocaust-Era Claims, Vivian Grosswald Curran
Competing Frameworks For Assessing Contemporary Holocaust-Era Claims, Vivian Grosswald Curran
Fordham International Law Journal
Suppression and erasure have played a significant role in the context of the Holocaust. The massive number of deaths yielded a terrible weight of silence, and the erasure of memory occurred in a multiplicity of ways, including: (1) viciously and cynically on the part of many who sought to hide all traces of their crimes; (2) protectively on the part of some who sought to save the lives of the prosecuted; and (3) inevitably as the result of the disappearance of a world and culture destroyed beyond any possibility of resuscitation by the few individuals who survived in displacement and …

Religious Coping And College Adjustment: A Study Of An Elite Sample, Jeannie Shannon Mood
Religious Coping And College Adjustment: A Study Of An Elite Sample, Jeannie Shannon Mood
Honors Theses
This study sought to further explore the possible role of religious involvement on college adjustment. Religion was viewed as a multidimensional construct, assessed by means of the Religious Problem Solving Scales (RPSS) developed by Pargament et al. (1988). Nine different areas of adjustment were targeted with the College Adjustment Scales (CAS) developed by Anton and Reed (1991). Freshman honors students were assessed at the beginning and end of their first semester in college. Data analysis was conducted in three parts: the interscorer reliability of both the RPSS and CAS, the temporal stability of the RPSS, and the criterion-related validity of …
