Research outputs pre 2011
This project was funded by Edith Cowan University and the Centre for Inclusive Schooling (Department of Education, formerly Education Department of Western Australia) as an Institute for the Service Professions Collaborative Grant. It was carried out in order to examine the following questions:
• What are the ways in which identification, assessment and teaching processes make provision for students with learning difficulties who are enrolled in a School of the Air?
• In what ways do Support Officers Learning Difficulties support these children, their home tutors and their teachers?
Developing E-Learning Environments That Support Knowledge Construction In Higher Education, Ron Oliver
Developing E-Learning Environments That Support Knowledge Construction In Higher Education, Ron Oliver
Research outputs pre 2011
Much of the conventional development of Web-based learning environments the creation of electronic forms of existing print-based materials. In such instances the Web-based courses have tended to display limited evidence of an underpinning learning design and varying degrees of use of the opportunities and affordances of the new technologies. This paper provides an overview of instructional design principles that can guide the creation of Web-based learning materials that support learner engagement and knowledge construction. The paper describes the attributes of constructivist learning settings and provides some examples of explicit learning designs that can be applied in the design of Web-based …

Developing Generic Tools For Use In Flexible Learning: A Preliminary Progress Report, Ron Oliver, Barry Harper, Shirley Agostinho
Research outputs pre 2011
This paper presents a description of the Australian University Teaching Committee (AUTC) funded project titled: "Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and Their Role in Flexible Learning" that aims to provide opportunities for university teachers to create high quality flexible learning experiences for students. This is to be accomplished by the development of a range of software tools and templates based on previously successful ICT-based learning projects in a form that will enable teachers in other settings and subject areas to create similar learning environments for their students. The project is a two-year endeavor and began in November 2000. The purpose …

New Designs For Web Based Learning Environments, Ron Oliver, Barry Harper, John O'Donoghue, N O Name
Research outputs pre 2011
With the continued advances in information and communication technology comes the interconnectivity of education institutions, businesses and industries. Either by default or association, the traditional education system will need to change and adapt to these new demands and opportunities. With these changes we are in danger of losing the focus of the learning process, and not recognising the importance of maintaining a balance between technology and pedagogy. This paper will review these issues, and examine an investigation of new learning designs which take advantage of the affordances of the Web and the opportunities which arise.
Assuring The Quality Of Online Learning In Australian Higher Education, Ron Oliver
Assuring The Quality Of Online Learning In Australian Higher Education, Ron Oliver
Research outputs pre 2011
This paper discusses the major issues confronting the successful adoption and sustained use of online learning in higher education within the Australian context. The paper argues that four main issues which universities must deal with to achieve maximum potential from online learning technologies are: the establishment of cost-effective practices; the achievement and maintenance of quality in online learning delivery; ensuring access and equity in the delivery of programs; and establishing practices which can enable online learning to be sustained and to grow as a mainstream activity in university teaching and learning. While these issues are suggested as discrete entities, it …
Promoting Self-Regulated Learning In An On-Line Environment, Mark Mcmahon, Ron Oliver
Promoting Self-Regulated Learning In An On-Line Environment, Mark Mcmahon, Ron Oliver
Research outputs pre 2011
Self-Regulation has long been seen as a desirable but difficult to achieve instructional aim. This is particularly true of on-line learning, where users have limited instructional support and where attrition rates tend to be greater than in face-to-face teaching. This paper examines the nature of self-regulation, identifying affective and cognitive skills which make for self-regulated learners. The broad psychological states of metacognition and self-concept are identified as well as the motivational and cognitive processes that underpin them. The volitional, learning, and regulatory strategies which learners use are delineated. These are placed within the context of online learning. Aspects which characterise …
Does Emotional Intelligence Affect Successful Teamwork?, Joseph Luca, Pina Tarricone
Does Emotional Intelligence Affect Successful Teamwork?, Joseph Luca, Pina Tarricone
Research outputs pre 2011
There is a growing emphasis in tertiary education that students should develop professional skills as part of their education. Skills such as problem solving, communication, collaboration, interpersonal skills, social skills and time management are actively being targeted by prospective employers as essential requirements for employability especially in team environments. Of these, employment authorities consistently mention collaboration and teamwork as being a critical skill, essential in almost all working environments. How then can students successfully practice teamwork skills in tertiary institutions in order to develop these skills? In this study, a group of final year multimedia students were investigated while completing …
Quality In Online Delivery: What Does It Mean For Assessment In E-Learning Environments?, Catherine E Mcloughlin, Joseph Luca
Quality In Online Delivery: What Does It Mean For Assessment In E-Learning Environments?, Catherine E Mcloughlin, Joseph Luca
Research outputs pre 2011
While a great deal has been written on the advantages and benefits of online teaching, and research continues to proliferate, many practitioners are seeking guidelines that can be applied to the design of assessment in online environments. The last decade has seen the convergence of traditional distance education with on-campus modes of delivery and work-based training signalling new models of flexible delivery. In addition, demand driven education accentuates the learner’s role and needs while the teacher has become a manager, mediator and motivator of student learning. Issues raised by national and international bodies and quality assurance agencies now seem to …
Investigating Processes Of Social Knowledge Construction In Online Environments, Catherine Mcloughlin, Joseph Luca
Investigating Processes Of Social Knowledge Construction In Online Environments, Catherine Mcloughlin, Joseph Luca
Research outputs pre 2011
On-line forums provide opportunity and potential for collaborative work, dialogue and study that can increase the flexibility of learning while motivating participants. By enabling teacher-learner and learner-learner interaction online systems can support the essential elements of a learning conversation by providing scope for discussion, dialogue and interaction. It is argued that this medium presents a socio-cognitive educational domain, unique in its potential for dialogue, participation and collaboration and a departure from face-to-face didactic paradigms of learning. Often, the types of verbal interactions and the means by which new knowledge is created on-line are not well understood. The paper provides frameworks …

An Investigation Of Demographic, Psychosocial And Self-Reported Behavioral Influences On Career Maturity Levels Of College Student-Athletes., Rebecca L. Ahlgren
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Career maturity is operationally defined as the readiness of an individual to make informed, age-appropriate career decisions and cope with career development tasks (King, 1990; Savickas, 1984). The matched sample consisted of a total of 344 participants including college freshmen student-athletes (n = 107), freshmen non-student-athletes (n = 107), senior student-athletes (n = 65), and senior non-student-athletes (n = 65). It was hypothesized that there would be significant, positive relationships between the psychosocial variables of educational involvement (EI), career planning (CP), career decision making self-efficacy (CDMSE), and career locus of control (CLCS), and significant, negative relationships between these measures and …

The Phenomenological Lived Experience Of Rheumatoid Arthritis., Monica Lena Iaquinta
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Previous qualitative studies about the lived experience of persons with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have yielded common themes, such as becoming aware, seeking help, learning to live with the disease, and uncertainty (Brown & Williams, 1995; Ryan, 1996; Shaul, 1995, 1997; Yoshida, 1996). Gaps identified included lack of personalized guidance and support from health care providers, gender differences, and the active role of the patient in managing the disease (Brown & Williams, 1995; Ryan, 1996; Shaul 1995, 1997). This study addressed two of the three gaps previously mentioned: (a) personalized nursing care, and (b) patient as active manager of the disease. …
Defining Environmental Theology: Content Analysis Of Associated Literature., Robert J. Jacobus
Defining Environmental Theology: Content Analysis Of Associated Literature., Robert J. Jacobus
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Environmental theology is a term used often by religious communities describing theological doctrines concerning the relationship of deity and ethical conduct to the environment. After an extensive literature search, an operational or declarative definition for environmental theology was not discovered. The objectives of this study were to establish an explicit and scholarly definition of environmental theology and introduce deoview as a descriptor associated with the term. People have and will continue to act according to their belief systems: this paper has value in understanding beliefs, ethics, and behavior of people and people groups.
A Comparison Of The Instructional Effectiveness Of Intensive And Semester-Length Courses., Marc C. Seamon
A Comparison Of The Instructional Effectiveness Of Intensive And Semester-Length Courses., Marc C. Seamon
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A broad research literature base on the instructional effectiveness of intensive-format courses often finds the intensive courses equal or superior to semester-length versions, but many of the studies from which those conclusions are drawn were theoretically or methodologically flawed. This examination of student characteristics and instructional effectiveness in one matched pair of educational psychology classes found that students in the intensive version of the course performed significantly better than students in the semester-length course on posttests of content and questions tapping higher-order learning. Despite indications of better learning in the intensive-course group, the two groups of students did not differ …
Object-Oriented Expert System Design: Texpert., Maryam Farmani
Object-Oriented Expert System Design: Texpert., Maryam Farmani
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Object-Orientation is a powerful approach to managing complexity, which has received widespread attention in the past few years. Object-Oriented Design is based on a small number of basic concepts: object, classes, operations and relationships. Some important relationships are inheritance, message passing, and encapsulation. Different methods and notations have been proposed within this paradigm, and a Unified Modeling Language has been developed based on several of these methods. Most rule-based expert systems are not flexible enough to handle problems that mix logical deductions, rule-based inferences, and procedure execution, but mixed problems are common in modern society. Management decisions, for example, are …
Interethnic Communication Apprehension: Another Look At Predictor Variables With More Diverse Populations., Kari Elizabeth Albertson
Interethnic Communication Apprehension: Another Look At Predictor Variables With More Diverse Populations., Kari Elizabeth Albertson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Using an African-American sample, this study replicates the work of Toale and McCroskey (in press) on predictor variables associated with interethnic communication apprehension. Participants responded to Canary and Stafford’s (1992) relational maintenance strategies typology, Personal Report of Interethnic Communication Apprehension (PRECA), Person Report of Communication Apprehension (PRCA-24) and Neuliep and McCroskey’s (1997b) General Ethnocentrism scale. The results indicated that interethnic communication apprehension was not correlated with relational maintenance strategies used in interethnic relationships. Although trait communication apprehension and ethnocentrism were both predictive of IECA, ethnocentrism was more predictive, accounting for most of the variance in IECA scores. This study gives …

The Relationship Of Mental Skills To Performance On A Tennis Accuracy Task Under Fatigued And Non-Fatigued Conditions., Mark Christopher Booras
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to determine whether athletes with higher mental skills perform tennis accuracy skills better than athletes with lower mental skills under two conditions. Division 1 tennis players (N = 11 men, N = 10 women) were divided into high and low mental skills groups by a median split on the ACSI-28. They were taken through two exercise conditions, fresh and fatigue, on two separate days and given a tennis accuracy task at the end of each condition. A repeated measure ANOVA determined there was no significant interaction between mental skill level and task condition scores. …

Why A Journal Of Research For Consumers?, Simone Pettigrew
Why A Journal Of Research For Consumers?, Simone Pettigrew
Research outputs pre 2011
This article outlines the rationale behind the introduction of the Journal of Research for Consumers. The potential benefits to be gained from educating consumers are discussed, and arguments are made for the contribution of consumer researchers to the consumer education process. In particular, the deficiencies of the current dependence on research that produces managerial outcomes are discussed in terms of the limitations they place on understanding the relevance of consumption in consumers' lives. The structure of the Journal of Consumer Research is described in terms of the access provided to both academic and consumer audiences.
Chimpanzee-Caregiver Interactions In Captive Settings: The Effects Of "Cultures" Of Captive Management, Sarah Angela Baeckler
Chimpanzee-Caregiver Interactions In Captive Settings: The Effects Of "Cultures" Of Captive Management, Sarah Angela Baeckler
All Master's Theses
Interactions between chimpanzees and human caregivers can have profound effects on both the humans and the chimpanzees. These interactions were studied at three different facilities. Twenty-one chimpanzees and five caregivers were observed during their daily interactions over the course of approximately two weeks per facility. Results indicate differences in the types and styles of interactions that take place at each facility, and the relationships between the chimpanzees and their caregivers.
Implications for captive management were discussed.
Spanish Epenthesis: Formal And Preformance Perspectives, David Eddington
Spanish Epenthesis: Formal And Preformance Perspectives, David Eddington
Faculty Publications
Epenthesis of /e/ before sC- clusters in Spanish is documented word-initially (e.g., eJfera) as well as in word-internal contexts (e.g., subestimar). Cases of alternating epenthesis also exist (e.g., arteriosclerosis I arterioeclerosis). Epe nthesis is examined in the formal frameworks of lexical phonology and optimality theory. Both formal analyses are able to account for the majority of the data presented, however, each requires some arguably ad hoc manipulation in order to do so. From a performance standpoint, it is argued that epenthesis plays no role in the processing of native Spanish words. The appearance of epenthesis in loan words (e.g., stress …
Surface Analogy And Spelling Rules In English Vowel Alterations, David Eddington
Surface Analogy And Spelling Rules In English Vowel Alterations, David Eddington
Faculty Publications
Previous psycholinguistic research into the English vocalic system suggest that the vowel alternations [ei-re, ii-£, ai-1, ow- a, u"-A], termed SPELLING RULE ALTERNATIONS, are psychologically significant for English speakers, in that they can influence the pronunciation of unfamiliar words. In this paper, the influence of these salient alternations on nonce words and neologisms is assessed. The effect of su1face analogy on the pronunciation of novel words is also examined. Surface analogy may be defined as the influence exerted by the fu lly specified surface forms of the morphemic relatives of a word. It assumes that all allomorphs of a given …

A Pragmatic Justification Of The Judicial Hunch, Mark C. Modak-Truran
University of Richmond Law Review
Judges currently face a daunting task. On the one hand, they are increasingly aware of the indeterminacy of the law, while on the other hand, they face an explosion of fact. Judges are floating on shaky legal timbers in a sea of documents, deposition transcripts, affidavits, oral courtroom testimony, and expert opinions. The explosion of fact alone presents monumental problems for deciding cases without unduly simplifying or reducing this factual complexity. For example, both federal and state judges are implementing case management systems to deal with their crushing case loads and the increasing complexity of their cases. In addition, there …
The Presidential Election Case: Remembering Safe Harbor Day, Gary C. Leedes
The Presidential Election Case: Remembering Safe Harbor Day, Gary C. Leedes
University of Richmond Law Review
The 2000 presidential election transported the nation down a long and winding road without a map and headed in an uncertain direction. While it might be an exaggeration to say that the system of constitutional law was self-destructing, it is undoubtedly true that the events surrounding the election were spinning out of control, and that irreparable harm to the electoral process and thereby the nation was imminent.
