Bcas: A Web-Enabled And Gis-Based Decision Support System For The Diagnosis And Treatment Of Breast Cancer, Guisseppi A. Forgionne, Aryya Gangopadhyay, Monica Adya, Joseph K. Tan

Management Faculty Research and Publications

For decades, geographical variations in cancer rates have been observed but the precise determinants of such geographic differences in breast cancer development are unclear. Various statistical models have been proposed. Applications of these models, however, require that the data be assembled from a variety of sources, converted into the statistical models’ parameters and delivered effectively to researchers and policy makers. A web-enabled and GIS-based system can be developed to provide the needed functionality. This article overviews the conceptual web-enabled and GIS-based system (BCAS), illustrates the system’s use in diagnosing and treating breast cancer and examines the potential benefits and implications …

The "Good Will" Religions : A Comparative Study Of Hinduism, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity And Islam, Mary Ellen Fieseler

Honors Capstones

Religion had its inception in man's ignorance and fear of the world around him. It was a path toward satisfying man's quest for the signifance of life. As this path was pursued, the meaning and value humans ascribed to the world evolved, forming the various religions of the world. During the greatest of all religious eras, 800 to 500 BCE, India, China, Persia and Israel all imparted into human thought and practice a new god-concept, a fundamental conception of benevolent good will, and accompanying this new god-concept were changes in the religious rules that determined human conduct. This research outlines …

An Investigation Of Tourist Involvement On International Tour Type Choices, Tsung-Chiung Wu Jan 2001

An Investigation Of Tourist Involvement On International Tour Type Choices, Tsung-Chiung Wu

Visions in Leisure and Business

Involvement theory derived from social judgment theory has raised great research interests for leisure scholars since 1990s. The study issues for leisure involvement range from its conceptualization, measurement, antecedent and consequence factors, building causal relations, testing variations of leisure involvement among different recreation activities, and management and marketing applications. Although several inconclusive arguments exist, leisure involvement theory provides solid bases to explain leisure participation behavior, especially in the cases of participation patterns, message processing, and decision-making patterns.

The primary purpose of this study is to examine the appropriateness of applying involvement theory on international tour type choices. Ex post Facto …

Doing Theology In The City, Paul Fitzgerald Jan 2001

Doing Theology In The City, Paul Fitzgerald

Special Topics, General

The task of theology is often a lonely endeavor. The hush of the library or the archives, the still of the chapel, and the quiet discipline of one's desk are places where theological research and writing unfold, most often in solitary concentration. The classroom on the protected college campus or seminary, the academic conference in large hotels, and even the cherished conversation in the homes of colleagues do open the theologian to other minds and hearts so that theories and insights may be tested in dialogue. However, these exchanges are often located in affluent social contexts which cannot reveal the …

Introduction: Fear And Loathing Of Evolutionary Psychology In The Social Sciences, Daniel Leger, Alan Kamil, Jeffrey French

Psychology Faculty Publications

When one looks at the intellectual landscape of the modern university, at the scholarly and scientific interests of its faculty, the panorama is seamless. There are no discontinuities. The interests of physicists transmogrify into those of chemists, those of chemists into those of biologists, and so on. The lines, the divisions, between departments have been created out of administrative, not intellectual, necessity.

Applying The Transtheoretical Model Of Change To Stress Management Among Adolescents: Development And Validation Of Decisional Balance And Confidence Measures, Leanne M. Mauriello Jan 2001

Applying The Transtheoretical Model Of Change To Stress Management Among Adolescents: Development And Validation Of Decisional Balance And Confidence Measures, Leanne M. Mauriello

Open Access Master's Theses

The negative physical and psychological health consequences of stress are a significant and prevalent concern for our society. This study proposes using the Transtheoretical Model to increase stress management behaviors among adolescents. As a first step in doing so, measures of decisional balance and self-efficacy were developed on a pilot sample of 317 ninth and tenth graders from a public, New England high school. Using a split-half cross-validation procedure, exploratory and confirmatory analyses produced two, internally consistent instruments. The resulting decisional balance measure includes 4 items to measure the pros of practicing stress management and 4 items to measure the …

Artistry And Irony In María De Zayas's La Inocencia Castigada, Matthew D. Stroud Jan 2001

Artistry And Irony In María De Zayas's La Inocencia Castigada, Matthew D. Stroud

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

By the time Maria de Zayas published her Desengaños amorosos, the honor scenario, due in large part to the dominance of the comedia and especially of Calderón, had taken on a number of characteristics that today seem inseparable from the familiar plotlines. A noblewoman, usually innocent of adultery but loved by another man, is believed for one reason or another to have dishonored her husband. He proceeds to verify that the affront has indeed been committed, and, upon (wrongly) coming to believe that his wife is guilty, undertakes to have her killed in secret so that his honor will …

Jane Addams's Critique Of Capitalism As Patriarchal, Marilyn Fischer Jan 2001

Jane Addams's Critique Of Capitalism As Patriarchal, Marilyn Fischer

Philosophy Faculty Publications

This essay is a response to Seigfried's invitation to explore historical writings of women within the pragmatist tradition. In the first part, I show how Dewey's and Addams's shared appreciation of evolutionary perspectives, concrete experience, context, and sympathetic understanding led them to similar conceptions of social democracy and similar critiques of industrial capitalism. In Part II, I explain how Addams's critique of industrial capitalism goes beyond Dewey's in explicitly linking capitalism With philanthropy as then practiced, and criticizing both as patriarchal. In Part III, I compare Addams's account to that of socialist feminists, and show that while there are clear …

Feminists Doing Ethics, Peggy Desautels, Joanne Waugh Jan 2001

Feminists Doing Ethics, Peggy Desautels, Joanne Waugh

Philosophy Faculty Publications

We offer this volume as a contribution to the ongoing conversation that goes under the name of "feminist ethics." This conversation took an exciting and interesting turn recently at the Feminist Ethics Revisited Conference; many of the essays in this volume articulate ideas and analyses first presented there.1 The term feminist ethics was used broadly at this conference- as it is again here-to refer to the perspectives on women 's experience that come into view at the intersections of ethics, politics, philosophy, and literature. Earlier generations of philosophers-both male and female-have found that the experiences of women fit neither easily …

Contrasting The Relationships Between Teacher Immediacy, Teacher Credibility, And Student Motivation In Self-Contained And Mass Lecture Courses, Stephen A. Cox, Timothy S. Todd Jan 2001

Contrasting The Relationships Between Teacher Immediacy, Teacher Credibility, And Student Motivation In Self-Contained And Mass Lecture Courses, Stephen A. Cox, Timothy S. Todd

Basic Communication Course Annual

Basic communication courses are increasingly taught in mass-lecture formats. Research on teacher verbal immediacy, teacher nonverbal immediacy, teacher credibility, and student motivation has failed to contrast the relationships between these four variables has failed to contrast the relationships between these four variables in different basic course formats. Respondents enrolled in self-contained (n =326) and mass-lecture (n =865) formats of basic communication courses completed surveys measuring these four classroom variables.

Results showed that all variables were positively and significantly correlated in both formats. However, four of the six correlation coefficients between teacher verbal immediacy, nonverbal immediacy, teacher credibility, and student motivation …

Teaching Social Construction Of Reality In The Basic Course: Opening Minds And Integrating Contexts, Marcia D. Dixson

Basic Communication Course Annual

After a brief review of social construction theory (SCT), this paper explores the introduction of SCT into the hybrid basic communication course. SCT offers a theoretical perspective that can open minds and integrate the contexts of our basic course.

Specifically, this article offers a) an introduction to the theory; b) application of SCT to the areas of interpersonal communication, small group communication and public communication; and c) a description of a syllabus using the hybrid basic communication course (all of the SCT projects referred to can be found in the Appendix).
