Many diagnostic imaging techniques are available to aid clinicians, including transcranial radiography, conventional tomography, computed tomography, arthrography, single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The aim of this study was to evaluate clinical findings and MRI features of temporomandibunlar joint (TMJ) disorders. The clinical histories of 251 patients (502 joints) with MR images were evaluated. Eight clinical variables (articular pain, clicking, locking, limitation of mouth opening, dislocation (luxation), headache (temporal, facial or neck), occlusal disharmony) and imaging findings "Normal, Anterior Disk Displacement With Reduction (ADDR), Anterior Disk Displacement Without Reduction (ADDWR) Anterior Disk Displacement With …

A More Efficient Design And Implementation Of Cal Programs In Natural Science Using Object-Oriented Technology, Jurgen Friedrich Jan 2001

A More Efficient Design And Implementation Of Cal Programs In Natural Science Using Object-Oriented Technology, Jurgen Friedrich

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

With the amount and complexity of science topics and applications increasing, the need for appropriate and effective science education is constantly growing. Computer-based education is very promising to help both teachers and learners in their difficult task, which involves complex psychological processes. This complexity is reflected in high demands on the design and implementation methods used to create computer-assisted learning (CAL) programs. Due to their concepts, flexibility, maintainability and extended library resources, object-oriented technology (OOT) is very suitable to producing this type of pedagogical tool. The introduced approach is demonstrated by a basketball simulation program for instruction in Newtonian mechanics …

Negotiating A Policy Of Prudent Science And Proactive Law In The Brave New World Of Genetic Information, Sherwin Chen Jan 2001

Negotiating A Policy Of Prudent Science And Proactive Law In The Brave New World Of Genetic Information, Sherwin Chen

UC Law Journal

Continuing advances in the science of molecular genetics have produced technologies that are capable of transforming our most fundamental perceptions of life and death. The fruits of genetic research have enabled doctors to identify the sex of children before they are born, as well as estimate their chances for developing hundreds of types of diseases. Other technologies based on this science include new identification techniques, limited therapies, and even new forms of life. With these unprecedented and powerful new possibilities, it is clear that the social and legal dimensions of genetic research and related technologies deserve careful examination. The purpose …

Factors Affecting Small Intestine Development In Weanling Pigs, Steven J. Kitt, Phillip S. Miller, Austin Lewis Jan 2001

Factors Affecting Small Intestine Development In Weanling Pigs, Steven J. Kitt, Phillip S. Miller, Austin Lewis

Nebraska Swine Reports

The pig faces significant biological and environmental challenges after weaning. A great deal of information is available on behavior, environment, health, and nutrition of the newly weaned pig; however, newly weaned pigs still suffer a growth lag. The pig’s small intestinal structure and function is altered during the days that follow weaning. As a consequence, the digestive and absorptive capacity of weanling pigs is decreased during this period and this may be partially responsible for the post weaning growth lag. Additionally, health benefits may be associated with an improved small intestinal structure and function. The goal of this article is …

Scholarship Unbound: Assessing Service As Scholarship In Promotion And Tenure Decisions, Kerryann O’Meara Jan 2001

Scholarship Unbound: Assessing Service As Scholarship In Promotion And Tenure Decisions, Kerryann O’Meara

New England Resource Center for Higher Education Publications

Scholars of higher education have long recognized that existing reward systems and structures in academic communities do not weight faculty professional service as they do teaching and research. This paper examines how four colleges and universities with exemplary programs for assessing service as scholarship implemented these policies within colleges of education. Case studies suggest that policies to assess service as scholarship can increase consistency among an institution’s service mission, faculty workload, and reward system; expand faculty’s views of scholarship; boost faculty satisfaction; and strengthen the quality of an institution’s service culture.

Beyond The Enforcement Principle: Sodomy Laws, Social Norms, And Social Panoptics, Ryan Goodman Jan 2001

Beyond The Enforcement Principle: Sodomy Laws, Social Norms, And Social Panoptics, Ryan Goodman

Faculty Articles

Social norms scholarship offers various conceptual models for understanding law's capacity to produce or inhibit particular behaviors. The current literature, however, has inadequately attended to either testing these theories through empirical research or studying law's ancillary effects on social structure and individuals' lives. In response, this Article undertakes an empirical study of the social effects of an unenforced criminal law: sodomy statutes. The Article examines the constitutive impact these laws have on individual identity, social relations, and conceptions of public space. This aspect of the study is based on ethnographic research conducted in South Africa before and after the country's …

Discrimination With A Difference: Can Employment Discrimination Law Accomodate The Americans With Disabilities Act?, Samuel Issacharoff, Justin Nelson Jan 2001

Discrimination With A Difference: Can Employment Discrimination Law Accomodate The Americans With Disabilities Act?, Samuel Issacharoff, Justin Nelson

Faculty Articles

This Article explains that all employment discrimination laws not only condemn the subjugation of defined groups, they also impose significant redistributive costs. The Article uses the Americans with Disabilities Act as an example to examine how much redistribution is proper under the rubric of nondiscrimination. The most recent ADA cases, most notably Sutton v. United Air Lines, reveal more starkly than prior employment discrimination case law the tension between the nondiscrimination command and the redistributive side of employment opportunity law. The doctrinal difficulties faced by courts interpreting the ADA stem directly from the inability of the anti-discrimination model to control …

A Woman Decides: Justice O'Connor And Due Process Rights Of Choice, Peggy C. Davis, Carol Gilligan Jan 2001

A Woman Decides: Justice O'Connor And Due Process Rights Of Choice, Peggy C. Davis, Carol Gilligan

Faculty Articles

A Woman Decides addresses the need for intellectual versatility among judges and lawyers. The underlying premise of the essay is that excellence in judicial practice requires integration of rule-based and contextual reasoning. Professor Gilligan's work is relied on both to explain the importance of intellectual versatility and to explain why cultures of professional practice fail to encourage it. Professor Davis's work is relied on to explain the importance of an intellectually versatile approach, and the dangers of an intellectually narrow approach, to decisionmaking that relates to three important aspects of substantive due process: the liberty interests in controlling the manner …

Hoarding By Elderly People, Gail Steketee, Randy O. Frost, Hyo-Jin Kim Jan 2001

Hoarding By Elderly People, Gail Steketee, Randy O. Frost, Hyo-Jin Kim

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Although hoarding has been studied in adults, little is known about problems of hoarding by elderly people. This study used a structured telephone interview with elder services providers to investigate hoarding behaviors in relation to functional impairment, cognitive deficits, and physical and psychological conditions in 62 elderly clients. Most elderly hoarders were female, unmarried, and lived alone. Extensive clutter was associated with significant impairment, interfering with basic hygiene, and posing a serious physical threat for many elderly clients. Clients were rarely insightful about their collecting and often resisted change, rendering interventions generally ineffective. Never-married status was associated with more severe …

Crossing The Line: Case Studies Of Identity Development In First Generation College Women, Phyllis A. Wentworth, Bill E. Peterson Jan 2001

Crossing The Line: Case Studies Of Identity Development In First Generation College Women, Phyllis A. Wentworth, Bill E. Peterson

Psychology: Faculty Publications

In this paper we present four case studies of adult women from working class backgrounds who attended Hillside College (a pseudonym for one of the “seven-sister” colleges) during the early 1990s. Although research on women has led, over the past few decades, to a more complex picture of the contexts in which women develop their identities, one important context that has been underexplored is social class. Drawing on data from three lengthy interviews with each of our four participants, our purpose was to explore the identity concerns of adult women from working class backgrounds in their experience getting to and …

Welfare Reform On American Indian Reservations: Initial Experience Of Service Providers And Recipients On Reservations In Arizona, Shanta Pandey, Eddie Brown, Leslie Scheuler-Whitaker Jan 2001

Welfare Reform On American Indian Reservations: Initial Experience Of Service Providers And Recipients On Reservations In Arizona, Shanta Pandey, Eddie Brown, Leslie Scheuler-Whitaker

Buder Center for American Indian Studies Research

In this article we document trends in welfare caseloads and some initial experiences of service providers and welfare recipients on reservations within Arizona under Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). We document the issues and concerns of state and tribal service providers as they implement the legislation on reservations that are often geographically isolated and which lack infrastructure, jobs, childcare and transportation.

We also record experiences of women with children on reservations with the 1996 federal welfare legislation. These families experience similar barriers when trying to move from welfare to work as do their counterparts across the country; however, these …

Master Planning For Church Growth In Serbia, Radivoje Rade Milosavljevic Jan 2001

Master Planning For Church Growth In Serbia, Radivoje Rade Milosavljevic

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Very quickly we are approaching the second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The worldwide Seventh-day Adventist Church is growing as never before. However, the SDA Church in the former and present-day Yugoslavia grew rapidly in some periods, and declined in others. What factors helped the SDA church to grow? How can the power of the Holy Spirit be combined with a good strategic planning process to fulfill the Great Commission? This vital issue needs to be acknowledged and observed with practical steps taken to find causes and solutions.

This dissertation examines the development of a master-planning strategy for church …

Preaching By Discovery: A Training Program To Help Lay Speakers Develop A Style Of Preaching That Motivates To Action, Michael A. Mnich Jan 2001

Preaching By Discovery: A Training Program To Help Lay Speakers Develop A Style Of Preaching That Motivates To Action, Michael A. Mnich

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Many Seventh-day Adventist congregants do not act upon the sermons they hear. Lay preachers often preach in small, rural, Seventh-day Adventist churches. This project sought to develop a six-hour seminar to train lay preachers to preach in a way that motivates hearers to action.

Method

A literature search was conducted on motivational principles in psychology, education, the Bible, and the writings of Ellen G. White. These principles were used to develop the Preaching by Discovery seminar, which was given to the lay preachers of three small rural Seventh-day Adventist churches in Kansas. After the six-hour weekend seminar, lay preachers …
