Catharine Maria Sedgwick's "Hope Leslie": Clues To A Woman's Journey., Sally Mcmillan Tyler Jan 2001

Catharine Maria Sedgwick's "Hope Leslie": Clues To A Woman's Journey., Sally Mcmillan Tyler

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Prevalent in both archetypal and religious literature, the journey motif weaves its way through tales of human growth-stories which grapple with the processes of how people come to be and to know. Such images of identity formation and knowledge construction hold significant implications for the field of education. Indeed, Huebner (1993) notes that "we do not need learning theory or developmental theory to explain human change...The question educators need to ask is not how people learn and develop, but what gets in the way of the great journey---the journey of the self or soul" (p. 405). While Huebner's suggested paradigm …

X -Ray Absorption Fine Structure (Exafs And Xanes) And Microscopic Investigations Of Supramolecular Systems., Pierre Nicolas Floriano Jan 2001

X -Ray Absorption Fine Structure (Exafs And Xanes) And Microscopic Investigations Of Supramolecular Systems., Pierre Nicolas Floriano

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Self-assembled monolayers of n-alkanethiols, CH3-(CH 2)x-SH, on Au, Ag, and Cu have been studied with Grazing incidence EXAFS (GIXAFS) at the sulfur K-edge. Characterization of the bonding of self-assembled monolayers is of great interest because of their ability to tailor physical and chemical properties of surfaces. For both pentanethiol and decanethiol monolayers on Ag and Cu, the three-fold hollow site is found to be the most probable sulfur binding site. However, observations for octadecanethiol indicate that the three-fold-hollow site is not the exclusive binding site. In addition, the possible existence of disulfide bonds on the metal surface (adsorbed dialkyldisulfides) is …

Middle School Students' Understanding Of The Natural History Of The Earth And Life On Earth As A Function Of Deep Time., Azalie Cecile Pulling Jan 2001

Middle School Students' Understanding Of The Natural History Of The Earth And Life On Earth As A Function Of Deep Time., Azalie Cecile Pulling

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to use deep time, that is geologic time as a mechanism to explore middle school students' understanding of the natural history of the earth and the evolution of life on earth. Geologic time is a logical precursor to middle school students' understanding of biological evolution. This exploratory, mixed model study used qualitative and quantitative methods in each stage of the research to explore sixth grade students, understanding of geologic time, their worldviews (e.g., conceptual ecology), and conceptual change. The study included fifty-nine students in the large group study and four case studies. The primary …

School Culture, Teacher Efficacy, And Decision -Making In Demonstrably Effective And Ineffective Schools., Jacquline Jeanine Bobbett Jan 2001

School Culture, Teacher Efficacy, And Decision -Making In Demonstrably Effective And Ineffective Schools., Jacquline Jeanine Bobbett

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose for this study was fourfold. First, a conceptual model was developed to help understand teacher perceptions of the schools' professional culture, teachers' self-efficacy beliefs, participation in decision making and linkages to school effectiveness. Second, an original measure of teachers' self-efficacy beliefs about their own teaching effectiveness was developed and tested. Third, characteristics of the measures (quantitative and qualitative) were reported. Fourth differences in the mediating variables related to school effectiveness were examined. A stratified sample made up of 1,057 total school faculty in 41 elementary schools representing the uppermost and lower most quartiles of poverty in a southern …

A Study Of The Measurement And Sources Of Teachers' Self And Collective Efficacy Beliefs In Professional Learning Environments., Amy Marie Barrilleaux Dellinger Jan 2001

A Study Of The Measurement And Sources Of Teachers' Self And Collective Efficacy Beliefs In Professional Learning Environments., Amy Marie Barrilleaux Dellinger

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examined relationships between sources of efficacy information available in teachers' professional learning environments and teacher self-, work-group collective and faculty collective efficacy beliefs. An argument is presented that teachers' individual and collective efficacy beliefs are vital factors that mediate linkages between professional learning and meaningful change in schools. School professional learning environments are hypothesized to provide efficacy information that may serve to enhance teachers' beliefs in their abilities to accomplish tasks that are linked to effective teaching and learning. Social cognitive theory and triadic reciprocal causation provided the framework for this research. Self-efficacy theory, a sub-theory of social …

Navigating Knowing/Complicating Truth: African American Learners Experiencing Oral History As Real Education., Lavada Taylor Brandon Jan 2001

Navigating Knowing/Complicating Truth: African American Learners Experiencing Oral History As Real Education., Lavada Taylor Brandon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Dominant explanations for why urban African American learners dropout is that these students are "at-risk" (Swanson, 1991; Sartain,1989; Levine, 1988; Macchiarola, 1988). Such explanations blame the victim while exonerating the role schooling plays in shaping students' "at-risk" conditions (Woodson, 1933/1998; Tatum, 1997; Freire, 1970/1997; Shujaa, 1994; Gordon, 1993). This research contests these explanations for why African American learners dropout by centering 10 African American students' voices to highlight the role curriculum plays at casting them at-risk. Consequently, this work shifts reproach from individual students' home environments to the larger structural dimensions of curricula (what we know) and instruction (how we …

Professional Culture And Efficacy Correlates Of Organizational Effectiveness In Cooperative Extension Services., Rebecca Elaine White Jan 2001

Professional Culture And Efficacy Correlates Of Organizational Effectiveness In Cooperative Extension Services., Rebecca Elaine White

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Several important lines of inquiry have been developed during the past fifty years to study the complex nature of educational organizations. In particular, theorists, researchers, and educational policy makers have become increasingly concerned about the effectiveness of educational institutions. Recently, significant research and policy maker attention has been focused on issues of effectiveness of higher education. The Cooperative Extension Services as ancillary outreach units of state land grant universities are no exception and the extant literature has been focused primarily on outcomes as organizational effectiveness measures. This study addresses the need to develop more comprehensive conceptual frameworks for studying perceived …

Performativity And Performance: Representing The Tattooed Body., Mindy Elaine Fenske Jan 2001

Performativity And Performance: Representing The Tattooed Body., Mindy Elaine Fenske

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this study I examine visual representations of tattooed bodies in three arenas of cultural production: tattoo conventions, advertising, and neo-tribal books. Through the methodological lens of genealogies of performance, I analyze these texts' construction of the tattooed body as classed, gendered, and exotic. I argue that contemporary representations of the tattooed body resist and reproduce discursive power regimes by surrogating prior cultural performances and representations of performance. I argue that contemporary visual representations of the tattooed body succeed in resisting discursive authority when they performatively cite multiple and transgressive authorities. I additionally indicate that the body in representation transgresses …

English Immersion Program In Korea: Student Progress After Four Months Of Implementation., Jaiwon Jung Jan 2001

English Immersion Program In Korea: Student Progress After Four Months Of Implementation., Jaiwon Jung

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In Korea, efforts to teach a non-native language, such as English, to Korean students usually result in native speakers acquiring limited language abilities. As a result, the teaching of English has little effect upon making native speakers fluent in a non-native language. Many foreign language instructors in Korea attempt to find new teaching methods to improve the performance of students in foreign language proficiency. Among the various innovative approaches of the 20th century, research has shown that the immersion approach may be one of the most effective means. Thus this dissertation introduces the innovative immersion teaching methods for Korean school …

Ways Of Incorporating Photographic Images In Learning And Assessing High School Biology: A Study Of Visual Perception And Visual Cognition., Brenda Chaumont Nixon Jan 2001

Ways Of Incorporating Photographic Images In Learning And Assessing High School Biology: A Study Of Visual Perception And Visual Cognition., Brenda Chaumont Nixon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study evaluated the cognitive benefits and costs of incorporating biology-textbook and student-generated photographic images into the learning and assessment processes within a 10th grade biology classroom. The study implemented Wandersee's (2000) 20-Q Model of Image-Based Biology Test-Item Design (20-Q Model) to explore the use of photographic images to assess students' understanding of complex biological processes. A thorough review of the students' textbook using ScaleMaster R with PC Interface was also conducted. The photographs, diagrams, and other representations found in the textbook were measured to determine the percentage of each graphic depicted in the book and comparisons were made to …

Unrolling Roles In Techno-Pedagogy: Toward New Forms Of Collaboration In Traditional College Settings, Alison Cook-Sather

Education Program Faculty Research and Scholarship

Taking the rapid development of information technologies as a catalyst for re-examining the roles generally assigned to professors, students, librarians, and technology support staff in traditional college settings, this article explores how these players in higher education can collaborate to redefine their roles. The article begins with a theoretical exploration of our concept of role and then describes a workshop designed to explore how roles are defined and played out in academic settings.

Altruistically Inclined?: The Behavioral Sciences, Evolutionary Theory, And The Origins Of Reciprocity, Alexander J. Field Jan 2001

Altruistically Inclined?: The Behavioral Sciences, Evolutionary Theory, And The Origins Of Reciprocity, Alexander J. Field

Faculty Book Gallery

Altruistically Inclined? examines the implications of recent research in the natural sciences for two important social scientific approaches to individual behavior: the economic/rational choice approach and the sociological/anthropological. It considers jointly two controversial and related ideas: the operation of group selection within early human evolutionary processes and the likelihood of modularity—domain-specific adaptations in our cognitive mechanisms and behavioral predispositions.

Experimental research shows that people will often cooperate in one-shot prisoner's dilemma (PD) games and reject positive offers in ultimatum games, contradicting commonly accepted notions of rationality. Upon first appearance, predispositions to behave in this fashion could not have been favored …

Crossing Ovah' : A Phenomenological Examination Of Healing In African Americans Of The Southeastern United States, Lalisa Alita Anderson Jan 2001

Crossing Ovah' : A Phenomenological Examination Of Healing In African Americans Of The Southeastern United States, Lalisa Alita Anderson

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

No Abstract submitted, substituted introduction: Researchers have examined healing from the perspective of the healer and they have explored the structure and function of healing systems (1,2,3,4). However there is a paucity of research that explores healing from the context of those who have experienced it (5). It has been noted that many mental disorders in the United States remain either untreated or poorly treated, especially in the African-American community (6). The 1999 Surgeon General's Report on Mental Health states that at present the United States mental health system is not equipped to meet the needs of racial and ethnic …

Juridical And Jurisdictional Disconnects, Mark A. Drumbl Jan 2001

Juridical And Jurisdictional Disconnects, Mark A. Drumbl

Scholarly Articles

Although extraterritorial trials for human rights abusers certainly achieve some justice, this Article posits -- through a case-study of post-genocide Rwanda -- that the effects of such trials are circumscribed by the fact they may have little meaning among perpetrators and victims in post-conflict societies. This limited meaning particularly attaches to trials conducted extraterritorially through international tribunals as well as trials conducted in foreign national courts through the exercise of what loosely is called "universal jurisdiction." This circumscribed meaning results in these trials' having limited deterrence effects, although they may go some way to satisfying the deontological need to punish …

An Integrative Hierarchical Framework For Environmental Valuation: Value Pluralism, Thresholds, And Deliberation, Randall S. Rosenberger Jan 2001

An Integrative Hierarchical Framework For Environmental Valuation: Value Pluralism, Thresholds, And Deliberation, Randall S. Rosenberger

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

When assessing people’s values for the natural environment, a variety of methodological approaches may be required. This is because value pluralism negates the ability to reduce the various kinds of values to a single conception of value or super-value. Environmental valuation endeavors are defined by the question to be answered. However, for some people, the methodology employed may conflict with their perception of the issue and what values are most important to them, i.e., the methods employed are not globally incentive compatible with all modes of expressing one’s values. Therefore, any single disciplinary approach to environmental valuation may ignore these …

Quality Of Life Satisfaction: A Comparative Survey Analysis Of The Eastern Panhandle And Southern West Virginia Counties, James O. Bukenya, Tesfa Gebremedhin Jan 2001

Quality Of Life Satisfaction: A Comparative Survey Analysis Of The Eastern Panhandle And Southern West Virginia Counties, James O. Bukenya, Tesfa Gebremedhin

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

The main objective of this paper is to analyze and report quality of life survey responses from a random sample of over 1028 individuals from 21 counties in West Virginia. The survey responses are drawn from a quality of life survey conducted in 2000. Perhaps the most interesting observation from the responses was not that differences exist among counties but that, in all counties, the level of satisfaction was remarkably high (over 50%). Only small fractions of individuals were explicitly dissatisfied, surprisingly in counties with the highest growth levels in per capita incomes.

Comparing Three Spatial Cluster Tests From Rare To Common Spatial Events, Ge Lin Jan 2001

Comparing Three Spatial Cluster Tests From Rare To Common Spatial Events, Ge Lin

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

In the past few years, several new tests for spatial clustering have been proposed. With ever increasing capability of GIS and wider availability of spatial statistic functions, spatial analysts are likely to face challenge of properly using these tests. Seemingly gaps also exist between the development of new tests and follow up evaluations against various assumptions. In this research note, I compare three cluster tests along a range of distribution from rare to common spatial events. The results not only revealed sensitive data feature that each test is designed to detect, but also clarified the interpretation based on the nature …
