Research On Faith And Health: New Appoaches To Old Questions, Thomas G. Plante, Allen C. Sherman
Research On Faith And Health: New Appoaches To Old Questions, Thomas G. Plante, Allen C. Sherman
Psychology
Does religious faith influence health? Are religious practices associated with altered risks for morbidity or mortality? Do religious or spiritual individuals tend to enjoy better well-being or mental health across the lifespan? Does spiritual or religious involvement change the way individuals adapt to the demands of chronic illness? This volume brings together some of the leading investigators who have explored these intriguing questions. Though research is in its early phases, the chapters that follow review some of what we have learned and begin to trace the outlines of the many mysteries that remain.

A Study Of Survivor's Progress In Bereavement Through Pre-Death Work, Helen Kathleen Brophy Mchale
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
Bereavement, a journey traveled while grieving, can be full of growth and self-discovery or darkened with loneliness and pain. This is especially true in Western Society were the discussion of death and grief are often avoided. This descriptive cor relational research study was designed to determine whether hospice intervention assisted individuals who lost their spouses to a predictable death from a terminal illness, with progress in bereavement. Relationships between bereavement progress, support received prior to death, and other variables were examined for 16 participants.
An interactive theoretical approach was incorporated into the study framework. Carl Rogers and Joyce Travelbee's models …

Domestic Violence Torts, Jennifer Wriggins
Domestic Violence Torts, Jennifer Wriggins
Faculty Publications
The Article systematically looks at domestic violence as a torts issue and also critiques how tort theory prioritizes accidents over intentional torts. After showing how domestic violence fits within the categories of intentional torts including battery, assault, false imprisonment and intentional infliction of emotional distress, the article highlights the disjunction between the prevalence of domestic violence and the virtual absence of tort suits seeking compensation for domestic violence injuries. The article analyzes the reasons for that absence and finds a range of explanations. Some of the explanations are practical, such as the ‘intentional acts exclusion’ in liability insurance and short …

Chamberlain, the "hero of Little Round Top," describing his activities as pre-war professor, Civil War leader, and post-war governor, college president and federal official. Chamberlain, a military novice at the beginning of the war, was appointed second-in command of the 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment, in August, 1862. Quickly learning the soldier's craft, Chamberlain was promoted to Colonel and regimental commander in June, 1863, just prior to the battle of Gettysburg. There the unit, profiting from Chamberlain's inspired and creative leadership, is credited with preventing the extreme left flank of …
Political Ramifications Of Gender Complementarity For Women In Native American Literature, Patrice Eunice Marie Hollrah
Political Ramifications Of Gender Complementarity For Women In Native American Literature, Patrice Eunice Marie Hollrah
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation explores how a tribal construct of gender relations---gender complementarity---functions in the works of Zitkala-Sa (Yankton Sioux), Leslie Marmon Silko (Laguna Pueblo), Louise Erdrich (Ojibwe), and Sherman Alexie (Spokane/Coeur d'Alene). Gender complementarity, or balanced reciprocity, acknowledges that the worlds of men and women are different but not generally perceived as hierarchical. If gender roles are not seen as unequal but simply different, the resulting political relationships do not necessarily result in power struggles for equality. Examining the political ramifications of gender complementarity for women in Native American literature is approached through the historical and cultural contexts of each specific …
An Investigation Into The Relationship Between Commitment As Loyalty: Commitment As A Key Mediating Variable For Loyalty, Shiang-Lih Chen
An Investigation Into The Relationship Between Commitment As Loyalty: Commitment As A Key Mediating Variable For Loyalty, Shiang-Lih Chen
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Many studies have verified that a service provider can benefit greatly from customer commitment and loyalty. However, there is a lack of consensus in the definition of commitment and loyalty constructs and ways of measuring them. As indicated by Pritchard, et al. (I999), there is a dearth of empirical consumer research examining the relationship between commitment and loyalty. Understanding the role that commitment plays in developing and explaining loyalty and the relationship between commitment and loyalty are critical in facilitating the evolution of loyalty; This study empirically examined whether commitment is a key-mediating variable for loyalty. The relationships between commitment …

The Politics Of Lesbian "Nature": A Feminist Critique Of Scientific Knowledge And Practice, Jaime L Phillips
The Politics Of Lesbian "Nature": A Feminist Critique Of Scientific Knowledge And Practice, Jaime L Phillips
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation is a feminist analysis of scientific articles published from 1990--2000 reporting findings from research on biological origins of lesbian and bisexual orientations in women. Informed by feminist standpoint epistemologies and the theories and empirical research of the interdisciplinary field of feminist science studies, I assert that scientific efforts to locate biological origins of lesbian and bisexual orientations in women are likely to be infused with culturally-based assumptions and beliefs regarding sex, gender, sexual orientation, and race. To the extent that these assumptions and beliefs go unacknowledged in the science, they place limitations on the knowledge claims that can …

Nervousness In The Works Of F Scott Fitzgerald, Michael Emil Tischler
Nervousness In The Works Of F Scott Fitzgerald, Michael Emil Tischler
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study examines how nervousness and the ideas that came to be associated with it manifest themselves in the works of F. Scott Fitzgerald, often influencing both the characters and themes in his fiction; Chapter one traces the development of what is referred to as a "nervous discourse" from the eighteenth to the early twentieth centuries, revealing how the pre-Enlightenment sense of nervous, which signified strength, gradually gave way to a meaning which indicates agitation or timidity and implies a sense of weakness. In addition, this chapter demonstrates that nervousness, even within medical literature, became linked to a number of …

Television As A Medium To College Students' Predispositions: Portrayals Of Professors And Their Profession, Mona Millicent Lauber
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Students bring preconceived beliefs and attitudes to their initial college experience. These predispositions influence their communication and interaction with faculty and others in the higher education environment. Previous research identified family, school, and peers as sources that contribute to the formation of students' predispositions. This study was designed to explore television as a fourth medium to college students' predispositions; Drawing from the perspectives of social cognitive theory and cultivation theory, portrayals of professors were analyzed in 15 episodes across three television programs. The content analysis employed both quantitative and qualitative techniques. Personality categories for the quantitative portion were adapted from …

Student Search And Seizure Since Tlo, Darryl Craig Wyatt
Student Search And Seizure Since Tlo, Darryl Craig Wyatt
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
When students in public schools are searched or seized by school officials for any reason, it can sometimes be a violation of the their Fourth Amendment right to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures. Two United States Supreme Court decisions---New Jersey v. T.L.O., 469 U.S. 325 (1985), and Vernonia v. Acton, 515 U.S. 646 (1995), have addressed student searches. T.L.O. dealt with the search of a student's purse after she was caught breaking a school rule, smoking in the bathroom. Vernonia established ground rules for dealing with drug-testing policies in the school environment. In both cases the Supreme Court …

Muscle Performance During Slow Isokinetic Speeds, Jonathan Michael Kwantes
Muscle Performance During Slow Isokinetic Speeds, Jonathan Michael Kwantes
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible mechanism responsible for the decrease in force during the 5°/sec velocity compared to the isometric velocity. Subjects (n = 9) completed MVC knee extension exercises during eccentric speeds of 5, 10, and 15°/sec, as well as isometric contractions. Extensor force and average EMG (aEMG) of the vastus lateralis (VL) and biceps femoris (BF) were quantified at knee angles of 55° and 65°. Six ANOVA (alpha = 0.05) tests determined a decrease in FT (p < 0.05) at both knee angles and a decrease in VL aEMG (p < 0.05) at 55° during 5°/sec condition compared to the isometric condition. No change in BF aEMG was observed across speeds (p > 0.05). It was concluded that there is a controlling mechanism which is neurological in nature which …
Peer Education And Its Effects On The Beliefs Of Rape Myths, Allison Marmer
Peer Education And Its Effects On The Beliefs Of Rape Myths, Allison Marmer
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Research has found that there is a relationship between men's acceptance of rape myths and violence against women (Malamuth, 1989). These stereotypical ideas about rape, rape victims, and rapists, perpetuate rape. Peer education may play a beneficial part in teaching students about rape, and is the primary focus of this study. The hypothesis of this study was that the rape myth prevention intervention would reduce the beliefs in myths about rape. The intervention, or informative lecture that was given to the experimental group was a derivative of material geared towards high school students. In summary, this research study succeeded to …

Children were diagnosed with either no symptoms of separation anxiety, subclinical symptoms of separation anxiety (1 or 2 symptoms), or clinical Separation Anxiety Disorder (3 or more symptoms). Parent pathology focused on depression, obsessive/compulsive, phobic anxiety, and somatization. Family environment examined parental control and level of expression in the family. Current levels of parental pathology were found to be …
The Experience Of Successful Smoking Cessation: A Phenomenological Inquiry, Gail Ann Rattigan
The Experience Of Successful Smoking Cessation: A Phenomenological Inquiry, Gail Ann Rattigan
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Cigarette smoking is a significant public health issue and despite efforts, prevalence of smoking has not decreased in accordance with national goals. This study utilized a phenomenological approach to describe women's experience of successful smoking cessation. Pender's Health Promotion Model (1996) and Prochaska and DiClementes' Transtheoretical Model of Change (1996) were utilized. Twelve women who had successfully quit smoking were interviewed; Data analysis yielded a core theme of transformation to non-smoker. Sub-themes included motivational factors of image conflict and cues for action. Other themes included barriers to cessation and coping mechanisms. Interpersonal factors and unconditional resolve were influential. Activity-related affect …
