Why Do Children Draw Horizontal Arms On Circular Bodies In Conventional Human Figures?, Marvin L. Simner Jan 2001

Why Do Children Draw Horizontal Arms On Circular Bodies In Conventional Human Figures?, Marvin L. Simner

Psychology Publications

Two accounts have been offered to explain the presence of horizontal arms on the circular bodies that often appear in conventional human figure drawings. The studies reported below, which support predictions from the radial bias account but not those from the Arnheim/Shaefer-Simmern account, suggest that a key factor in determining the angle of departure of the arms of the body might not be the child's attempt to draw the arms at right angles to the midline vertical axis of the body. Instead, the presence of horizontal arms could be due to the child's normal preference for locating the arms midway …

Eye Position Sense Contributes To The Judgement Of Slant., F M James, S Whitehead, G K Humphrey, M S Banks, T Vilis Jan 2001

Eye Position Sense Contributes To The Judgement Of Slant., F M James, S Whitehead, G K Humphrey, M S Banks, T Vilis

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

We measured monocular judgements of the slant of a cube face while varying eye position in the absence of stereoscopic and external lighting cues. Errors were found to be small, only 10% on average of the cube's eccentricity. Two factors appear to have contributed approximately equally to this error: an underestimate of cube slant as seen by the eye and an underestimate of eye position. When prism adaptation altered the sensed eye position, the pattern of slant judgements changed to reflect the altered sense of eye position.

The Art Of Science: Science Of The Future In Light Of Alterations Of Consciousness, Imants Barušs Jan 2001

The Art Of Science: Science Of The Future In Light Of Alterations Of Consciousness, Imants Barušs

Psychology

In presenting the data concerning altered states of consciousness in an even-handed manner, I have found that I cannot at the outset assume that materialism is the correct theory of reality. As demonstrated by survey data, the beliefs about consciousness and reality of academics and scientists who could write about consciousness in the academic literature range along a material-transcendent dimension from materialist through conservatively transcendent to extraordinarily transcendent positions, each with its corresponding notions of consciousness and proper methodology. Scientists need to undertake a process of self-examination in order to determine their personal beliefs and learn to set them aside …

Failure To Replicate Electronic Voice Phenomenon, Imants Barušs Jan 2001

Failure To Replicate Electronic Voice Phenomenon, Imants Barušs

Psychology

Electronic voice phenomenon (EVP) refers to the purported manifestation of voices of the dead and other discarnate entities through electronic means. This has typically involved tuning radios between stations and recording the output on audiotape, although more recently anomalous voices, visual images and text have purportedly been found using telephones, television sets and computers in a phenomenon known as instrumental transcommunication. Given the lack of documentation of EVP in mainstream scientific journals, a review of its history is given based on English language information found in psychical research and parapsychology periodicals and various trade publications and newsletters. An effort was …

Exploration Of Federal Sport Policy On Youth Elite Sport In Canada: A Case Study Of Gymnastics Canada Gymnastique, Laura Misener Jan 2001

Exploration Of Federal Sport Policy On Youth Elite Sport In Canada: A Case Study Of Gymnastics Canada Gymnastique, Laura Misener

Kinesiology Publications

A case study of Gymnastics Canada Gymnastique aided in creating a contemporary framework for youth sport policy development. Youth involved in elite sport are in a subsidiary position to those who control the sport environment, and therefore are in need of certain levels of protection. High performance youth athletes may be subject to numerous problems such as competitive anxiety, disrupted family life, and excessive physiological and psychological stress. In order to explore these issues in relation to federal sport policy, the following sub-problems were identified: (a) What are the process(es), legitimation(s) (rationale) and attribution(s) (strategies for action) of federal government …

Towards Transcultural Understanding: A Harmony Theory Of Chinese Communication, Guo-Ming Chen Jan 2001

Towards Transcultural Understanding: A Harmony Theory Of Chinese Communication, Guo-Ming Chen

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This chapter developed a general theory of Chinese communication from the perspective of harmony. Based on the nine concepts, including jen (humanity), yi (appropriateness), li (rites), shi (temporal contingencies), wei (spatial contingencies), ji (the first imperceptible beginning of movement), guanxi (inter-relation), mientz (face), and power, a total of four propositions, 23 axioms and 23 theorems were generated. The functions and interrelationships of these concepts form a holistic system that brings continuity into the endless transforming process of Chinese communication. It is hoped that the theory will serve as a mirror reflecting potential problems occurring in the intercultural communication and provide …

Gretel Ehrlich, Gregory L. Morris Jan 2001

Gretel Ehrlich, Gregory L. Morris

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

As a Western writer, Gretel Ehrlich is something of a curious case. By birth a Californian, Ehrlich has nevertheless shaped her identity as a Western writer by experience gathered elsewhere in the West. At the same time, while Ehrlich has lived and written extensively about her life in north-central Wyoming—and built her considerable reputation upon that work—the arc of her experience has carried her for the moment back to her native California. This movement from place to place (Ehrlich has been a writer of many places in her career) suggests a dominant tension in her life and work: that of …

The Effects Of Physical Activity On The Behavior Of Children With Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Amanda J. Love Jan 2001

The Effects Of Physical Activity On The Behavior Of Children With Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Amanda J. Love

Senior Honors Projects, 2000-2009

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of physical education class on the behavior of children diagnosed with Attention- Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Fourteen male and six female students in grades three through five were observed by their classroom teacher. Of the twenty students, then were diagnosed with ADHD and ten were not. Classroom teachers rated their students' behavior using the Iowa Connors Teacher's Rating Scale at two different time during the day for nineteen days (Pelham, W.E., Milch R., & Murphy, D.A., 1989). A higher score indicated greater inattention, hyperactivity, and impassivity while a score of …

Managerial Accountants, The Equity Theory, Job Satisfaction, And Intent To Leave, Philip N. Gilmore Jan 2001

Managerial Accountants, The Equity Theory, Job Satisfaction, And Intent To Leave, Philip N. Gilmore

Faculty Dissertations

This research measures the relationships among variables of equity, job satisfaction, and intent to leave for managerial accountants. An accountant may be comparing the equity of his/her situation with that of another (referent) or simply measuring his/her outcome (such as pay, etc.) to his/her own input (such as effort, etc.) on the job. Two hypotheses are supported. First, the correlation between managerial accountants' job satisfaction and job equity is positive. Second, the correlation between managerial accountants' job satisfaction and intent to leave the job is not positive. Employers of accountants are encouraged to review their personnel policies to ensure that …

Teaching The Concept Of Electricity And Magnetism Through The Use Of Manipulative Vs. Traditional Textbook, Kim Ellen Nanke-Hurst Jan 2001

Teaching The Concept Of Electricity And Magnetism Through The Use Of Manipulative Vs. Traditional Textbook, Kim Ellen Nanke-Hurst

Graduate Research Papers

The question the researcher wished to answer in this study was in which teaching method, discovery through manipulative or traditional textbook, could student's best learn the concepts of electricity and magnetism?

The manipulative teaching method seems to be conductive in science classrooms since it allows students to experiment with how and why things happen. This provides them with the opportunity to become better problem solvers. Through this method of teaching, students apply their knowledge to working concept of circuits, polarity in magnetism, flow of electrons and electromagnets to create a working motor. This group will be taught these concepts through …

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

In an effort to understand the mental health needs and resources of Korean Christians, we collected quantitative and qualitative data through surveys and interviews with Korean pastors and Christian educators. Several mental health concerns were identified: the high level of daily stress faced by many Koreans, marriage and family concerns, conflicts between Korean culture and the teachings of the church, and a tendency to keep emotional discomfort suppressed. Mental health resources include deep spiritual commitment to a life of prayer, high levels of commitment to family and community, cultural values of persistence and patience, and reliance on Christian communities for …

Solitude, Silence, And The Training Of Psychotherapists: A Preliminary Study, Jeffrey B. Van Meter, Mark R. Mcminn, Leslie D. Bissell, Mahinder Kaur, Jana D. Pressley Jan 2001

Solitude, Silence, And The Training Of Psychotherapists: A Preliminary Study, Jeffrey B. Van Meter, Mark R. Mcminn, Leslie D. Bissell, Mahinder Kaur, Jana D. Pressley

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

The spiritual disciplines of silence and solitude have long been practiced within the contemplative Christian tradition as a means of character transformation and experiencing God. Do these disciplines affect the use of silence in psychotherapy for Christian clinicians in a graduate training program? Nineteen graduate students in clinical psychology were assigned to a wait-list control condition or a training program involving the disciplines of solitude and silence, and the groups were reversed after the ftrst cohort completed the spiritual disciplines training. One group, which was coincidentally comprised of more introverted individuals, demonstrated a striking increase in the number of silent …

Child Emotional Maltreatment: A 2-Year Study Of Us Army Cases, Linda K. Jellen, James E. Mccarroll, Laurie E. Thayer Jan 2001

Child Emotional Maltreatment: A 2-Year Study Of Us Army Cases, Linda K. Jellen, James E. Mccarroll, Laurie E. Thayer

United States Army: Publications

Objective: Reports of childhood emotional maltreatment have increased greatly over the past decade. The objective of this research was to determine the types of emotional maltreatment substantiated in a community of US Army families residing temporarily in Germany. Such a description may help to improve the understanding of how a jurisdictional body defines emotional maltreatment in day-to-day practice.
Method: Data were obtained from a review of the minutes of case review committees (CRCs) for 181 cases of child emotional abuse in 1997–1998. We determined the type, number, and severity of incidents, the substantiation rate, and the situations to which children …

U.S. Air Force Long-Range Strike Aircraft White Paper, United States Air Force Jan 2001

U.S. Air Force Long-Range Strike Aircraft White Paper, United States Air Force

United States Air Force: Publications

As a result of DoD transformation plans and recent operational experience (Air War Over Serbia and Operation ENDURING FREEDOM) portions of the 1999 U.S. Air Force White Paper on Long Range Bombers have become outmoded. In October 2001, the Secretary of the Air Force directed an updated Long-range Strike Aircraft White Paper incorporating our new defense planning guidance. This document provides an update to the 1999 White Paper and reflects current decisions concerning bomber force structure and basing. While modification plans remain largely intact, the focus has been refined to support the Global Strike Task Force concept.

The Motivational Quality Of Global Attributions In Hypothetical And Experienced Situations Of Gender Discrimination, Mindi D. Foster Jan 2001

The Motivational Quality Of Global Attributions In Hypothetical And Experienced Situations Of Gender Discrimination, Mindi D. Foster

Psychology Faculty Publications

Traditionally, global attributions have been thought to reduce instrumental behavior aimed at resolving negative events. However, the present research shows global attributions for gender discrimination are related to taking action against unfair treatment. In Study 1, women ( N = 157) completed a questionnaire assessing attributions for hypothetical scenarios of discrimination and collective responses to discrimination. In Study 2, women ( N = 79) were placed into a laboratory situation of discrimination and asked to indicate their attributions for and responses to their unfair treatment. In both studies, hierarchical regression analyses showed that global attributions were related to both individual …

Describing Individual Incidents Of Sexual Abuse: A Review Of Research On The Effects Of Multiple Sources Of Information On Children’S Reports, Kim P. Roberts, Martine B. Powell Jan 2001

Describing Individual Incidents Of Sexual Abuse: A Review Of Research On The Effects Of Multiple Sources Of Information On Children’S Reports, Kim P. Roberts, Martine B. Powell

Psychology Faculty Publications

Objective. For successful prosecution of child sexual abuse, children are often required to provide reports about individual, alleged incidents. Although verbally or mentally rehearsing memory of an incident can strengthen memories, children’s report of individual incidents can also be contaminated when they experience other events related to the individual incidents (e.g., informal interviews, dreams of the incident) and/or when they have similar, repeated experiences of an incident as in cases of multiple abuse.

Method. Research is reviewed on the positive and negative effects of these related experiences on the length, accuracy, and structure of children’s reports of a particular incident. …
