The Effect Of Target Position And Tactual Recognition Field Size On Touch Bias And Accuracy, Elizabeth L. Brix Jul 2001

The Effect Of Target Position And Tactual Recognition Field Size On Touch Bias And Accuracy, Elizabeth L. Brix

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Past studies have shown that touchscreen display angles other than those that perpendicularly bisect the operator's line of sight cause the operator to touch slightly below the target. The amount of touch bias created from this misjudgment fluctuates according to the target's position on the screen. Additionally, the percentage of touches that activate a specific target varies according to the size of the tactual recognition field. Out of three square tactual recognition field sizes, this study sought to match these fields with the amount of touch bias occurring in each location (i.e., small amount of touch bias requires only a …

Culture Carol: Dickens's Influence On Lds Christmas Fiction, Rosalynde Frandsen Welch Jul 2001

Culture Carol: Dickens's Influence On Lds Christmas Fiction, Rosalynde Frandsen Welch

BYU Studies

During the festive weeks before Christmas feasts, everybody loves to hate Scrooge. That's how it always was in the household of my childhood. On the first Sunday afternoon of December, my father would gather the children in the family room and ceremonially produce our green hardbound edition of A Christmas Carol. He worked his way through the five staves of the Carol during that afternoon and the Sunday afternoons that followed, in order to complete the reading before Christmas Day. Although the younger children would fidget and the older children would complain, we needed the annual retelling of the …

Reconceptualizing The Expert Witness: Social Costs, Current Controls And Proposed Responses, Jeffrey L. Harrison Jul 2001

Reconceptualizing The Expert Witness: Social Costs, Current Controls And Proposed Responses, Jeffrey L. Harrison

UF Law Faculty Publications

Unlike virtually any other business, expert witnesses are not typically held accountable in either tort or contract law for their commercial activities. This means that many are inclined to deliver what the market demands - partisan, biased, or plainly dishonest testimony - without concern for the costs this testimony may impose on others. This immunity from the internalization of the social cost of their testimony is hard to reconcile with any moral or economic standard. Harsh judicial reactions to some experts and a slight increase in expert witness liability may signal that a change in the privileged status of experts …

Self-Report Of Adhd Symptoms In University Students: Cross-Gender And Cross-National Prevalence, George J. Dupaul, Elizabeth A. Schaughency, Lisa L. Weyandt, Gail Tripp, Jeff Kiesner, Kenji Ota, Heidy Stanish Jul 2001

Self-Report Of Adhd Symptoms In University Students: Cross-Gender And Cross-National Prevalence, George J. Dupaul, Elizabeth A. Schaughency, Lisa L. Weyandt, Gail Tripp, Jeff Kiesner, Kenji Ota, Heidy Stanish

Peer Reviewed Articles

Little research has examined the structure and prevalence of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in university students, including whether symptom structure conforms to the bidimensional (i.e., inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity) conceptualization of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders D (;SMV-IV American Psychiatric Association, 1994) and whether self-reported symptoms vary across gender and country. A sample of 1,209 university students from three countries (Italy, New Zealand, and the United States) completed a 24-item self-report measure (the Young Adult Rating Scale) tapping ADHD symptomatology. Factor analyses within the U.S. and New Zealand samples supported a bidimensional symptom structure, whereas weaker support for …

Probing "Life Qualification" Through Expanded Voir Dire, John H. Blume, Sheri Lynn Johnson, A. Brian Threlkeld

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

The conventional wisdom is that most trials are won or lost in jury selection. If this is true, then in many capital cases, jury selection is literally a matter of life or death. Given these high stakes and Supreme Court case law setting out standards for voir dire in capital cases, one might expect a sophisticated and thoughtful process in which each side carefully considers which jurors would be best in the particular case. Instead, it turns out that voir dire in capital cases is woefully ineffective at the most elementary task--weeding out unqualified jurors.

Empirical evidence reveals that many …

Factors That Effect The Course/Subject Selection Process Of High School Students Of African Descent, Denise-Bonnette Jones Jul 2001

Factors That Effect The Course/Subject Selection Process Of High School Students Of African Descent, Denise-Bonnette Jones

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Advanced societies require technologically literate citizens who can solve problems, manage complexities, find and use resources, and learn and apply evolving technologies (Owen, 1997). Today's rapidly changing economy is defined by constantly evolving technologies and falling behind is a recipe for disaster (Augustine, 1997). At the forefront is a reality that for most people, particularly the youth, the period during and beyond high school is marked by important career decision-making tasks. Determining what to do next in their lives remains an important but arduous developmental task for the youth leaving secondary school. As the world of work becomes more complex …

A Forum For Women's Voices: Mediation Through A Feminist Jurisprudential Lens, Kate Mccabe Jul 2001

A Forum For Women's Voices: Mediation Through A Feminist Jurisprudential Lens, Kate Mccabe

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This article explores the potential that mediation offers to women as a forum to tell their stories in their own voices. Part I explains the process of mediation. Part II examines the interplay of law, mediation and women, suggesting that the adversarial system has failed to acknowledge women and neglected to hear their voices or listen to their stories. This section also investigates the role of mediation within the legal system and the dangers adherent in that position. Part III introduces feminism and feminist jurisprudence. Part IV looks at mediation as an alternative process and explores the vitality of an …

Adolescent Sports Violence--When Prosecutors Play Referee. Making Criminals Out Of Child Athletes, But Are They The Real Culprits?, Jason R. Schuette Jul 2001

Adolescent Sports Violence--When Prosecutors Play Referee. Making Criminals Out Of Child Athletes, But Are They The Real Culprits?, Jason R. Schuette

Northern Illinois University Law Review

With increasing regularity, prosecutors across the United States are being asked to delineate a line between aggressive play and acts of violence that exceed an acceptable level. This includes the once docile province of youth sports. With that, this comment is devoted to violence in youth sports and the issues involved when criminal penalties are brought against child athletes. Part I analyzes the historical ideology behind the rise of youth sports programs in America; which consequently, is important in comprehending the ideals and beliefs that are intended to be fostered under the guise of youth sport. Part II discusses the …
