Securities Price Risks And Financial Derivative Markets, Peter H. Huang Jan 2001

Securities Price Risks And Financial Derivative Markets, Peter H. Huang

Publications

The financial and popular media report almost daily on the volatility of securities market prices. Yet, many people continue to buy securities to hedge against or speculate on certain risks. People can also buy or sell derivatives to hedge against or speculate on fluctuations in securities prices. This Article discusses three regulatory policy implications of utilizing derivatives markets to reallocate the bearing of securities price risks. First, if there are too few non-redundant derivative markets, a competitive market equilibrium allocation of securities price risks is typically constrained Pareto inefficient. This financial economic result means that for typical economies, a regulator …

Against The Grain: Female Detectives And "Lawyers In Petticoats" In The Fiction Of Wilkie Collins, Audrey Caming Fein Jan 2001

Against The Grain: Female Detectives And "Lawyers In Petticoats" In The Fiction Of Wilkie Collins, Audrey Caming Fein

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Wilkie Collins (1824--1889) changed the direction of English fiction during his lifetime and created the prototype for a new and lasting genre. "The Diary of Anne Rodway," The Dead Secret, The Woman in White, No Name, and The Law and the Lady all exemplify his skill in crafting tales of mystery and detection, and feature women as detectives. He was one of the most feminist of Victorian writers in his portrayal of women as intelligent, assertive and resourceful, as well as in his attacks on gender and class prejudices. His innovative plot devices established him as the founder of English …

"Falling On Deaf Ears": A Historical Treatment Of Fibromyalgia, Barbara Richardson Jan 2001

"Falling On Deaf Ears": A Historical Treatment Of Fibromyalgia, Barbara Richardson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

From 1850 to the present doctors have been examining the phenomenon now known as fibromyalgia, primarily in upper-middle class women. Some sources relate this to a lack of clearly defined roles for women since industrialization and urbanization changed family life. Medicine has not been able to effectively determine the etiology and treatment for this syndrome. Women's voices are "falling on deaf ears". Documented cases of fibromyalgia go back as far as biblical times. It is found in all geographic areas and has been labeled with many different names. In spite of these facts, it was not until 1990 that a …

"Outing" Of Miss Jean Brodie Or To Miss Christina Kay With Love, Elizabeth Erin Geoghegan Jan 2001

"Outing" Of Miss Jean Brodie Or To Miss Christina Kay With Love, Elizabeth Erin Geoghegan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Romantic friendships, or raves as they were commonly called, were a common element of the culture of girl's schools in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. However, the impact of sexologists' theories served to pathologize and stigmatize these relationships. Muriel Spark was a product of the girl's school education in the post-Freudian era. While many scholars have studied The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie for its spiritual or moral content, few have discussed the sexuality and lesbian content in the novel. This thesis discusses the sexual dynamics of the two main characters, Jean Brodie and Sandy Stranger, while taking into …

Adaptive On-Demand Routing Protocol For Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Ismail. Omer Jan 2001

Adaptive On-Demand Routing Protocol For Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Ismail. Omer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Existing MANET routing protocols can be classified into three categories: On-demand, Proactive, and Proactive-On-demand hybrid protocols. This dissertation presents a novel hybrid MANET routing protocol, Adaptive On-demand MANET Routing (AOMAR) protocol. AOMAR borrowed the concepts of temporal location updates in operating systems and cache memories to reconstruct broken routes. Each route entry in a mobile host will have a reference field that is set to indicate whether the route is used within a certain period of time called refresh time. Using the refresh time parameter and the route reference field, AOMAR behavior can be controlled to behave as pure On-demand, …

Anti-Victorian Attitudes In Thomas Hardy's "Jude The Obscure", Jennifer Lara Magrath-Singer Jan 2001

Anti-Victorian Attitudes In Thomas Hardy's "Jude The Obscure", Jennifer Lara Magrath-Singer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Published in 1895, Jude the Obscure was Thomas Hardy's last novel. With the approach of the turn-of-the-century, Victorian England experienced profound changes in its social structure. The writing of novels about oppressed women was popular in the late nineteenth century. As the narrative voice in Jude, Thomas Hardy sought to challenge the current conditions for women and men in society. His novel explores the reality of these conditions, and his characters, namely Sue Bridehead and Jude Fawley, show readers what can happen when people are unable to adapt to the laws and conventions set forth by society.

American Civil War: The Transformation Of Citizens Into Soldiers And The Disaffection Of Soldiers For Society, Michael Lee Ray

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

After the firing on Fort Sumter and Abraham Lincoln's subsequent call for volunteer troops, the nation began to mobilize for war in earnest. Many volunteers believed the war would be short in duration, thus they eagerly anticipated the arrival to the seat of war. The Battle of Shiloh, in April of 1862, forced both sides to realize that the war would be a prolonged affair. American soldiers had never witnessed such carnage and savagery on the battlefield. Both Northern and Southern volunteers brought with them a unique understanding of the world, shaped by the common heritage all Americans shared. "Yanks" …

Analysis Of Ezra Pound's "The Seafarer", Robert Michael Yunk Jan 2001

Analysis Of Ezra Pound's "The Seafarer", Robert Michael Yunk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Since its appearance, Pound's translation of the Old English poem, The Seafarer, has occupied a significant place in literary history and criticism. Among established descriptions in Anglo-Saxon studies, the original has been called "an indestructible tribute to the mariners of England." Pound's work adds to this tribute in a new way, making important statements concerning the history of language and literature of the sea. At the same time, Pound's translation explores the concept of literary "indestructibility," raising implications about how "texts" acquire meaning. By studying the different ways Pound attempted to bring Anglo-Saxon language to the present in The Seafarer, …

Behavior Of Laterally Loaded Pile For Integral Abutment Bridges, Narongrit. Butrieng

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Integral construction is being used to reduce the maintenance cost and avoid problems associated with bridge deck joints. Continuous deck jointless bridges with joints only at abutments and integral bridges with no joints at abutments are two major types of integral constructions being adopted. Integral abutment bridges accommodate superstructure movements without conventional expansion joints. The current practices adopted by various state departments of transportation are evaluated to arrive at a rational design procedure for integral abutment bridges. An illustrative numerical design example of an integral abutment bridge is presented with emphasis on the pile-soil interaction, temperature, creep and shrinkage effects …

I examined the diversity and seasonal abundance of adult butterflies in seven locations comprising seven habitat types in the Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation in southern Florida; two wet meadows, two pine flatwoods, two ecotones, and a disturbed roadside were studied. One ecotone occurred between a wet meadow and a dry hammock, the other between a pine …

Between The Lines: The Politics Of Passenger Rail Service, 1958--1970, Aaron Luke Alcorn Jan 2001

Between The Lines: The Politics Of Passenger Rail Service, 1958--1970, Aaron Luke Alcorn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

For many modern Americans, the passenger train is but a distant memory, an artifact of the past. In the postwar United States, the status of passenger rail service deteriorated significantly. There were many reasons for this decline, but large subsidies enabled by federal highway and air transportation policies greatly favored alternate forms of traffic at the passenger train's expense. Realizing that rail service in this country was either on the verge of extinction or nationalization, Congress and President Richard M. Nixon sought to preserve a modest network of passenger trains through the Rail Passenger Service Act of 1970, which created …

Cathodic Protection Modeling Of Marine Pipelines, Diane K. Lysogorski Jan 2001

Cathodic Protection Modeling Of Marine Pipelines, Diane K. Lysogorski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

A governing equation for potential attenuation along a pipeline cathodically protected by identical, evenly-spaced, spherical anodes is developed. The numerical solution, obtained using a coordinate based mapping (CoMB) finite difference method (FDM), can be used to predict the potential profile of a pipeline. In addition, a modified version of Ohm's Law is developed to provide an improved approach to design of pipeline CP systems. Both approaches address anode-electrolyte, coating-polarization, and metallic path resistance, but the latter neglects to address the potential gradient associated with the one-dimensional nature of pipelines. These two approaches were compared to results from existing potential prediction …

Can Everglades Forested Wetlands Significantly Reduce Nutrient Concentrations In Surface Waters?, Dara Michelle Cole

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

To improve water quality as part of a large restoration effort, constructed herbaceous wetlands will be used as filters of high nutrient water. In this study, I tested whether mixed forested wetlands could also be used as nutrient filters. I examined water quality parameters within a forested slough isolated from direct anthropogenic disturbance and within an impounded forest wetland receiving direct agricultural effluent. Among the water quality parameters, TP and K concentrations in the forested slough were particular low. Although all nutrients, except TKN, were higher in the impounded wetland, nutrient concentrations within the wetland were lower at interior sites …

Characterization, Biosynthetic Studies And Subcellular Localization Of Sterols From The Marine Sponge Teichaxinella Morchella, Amanda Joy Williams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

A-nor sterols have been isolated and characterized from the marine sponge Teichaxinella morchella using High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, and Mass Spectrometry. A cell free extract of T. morchella was used to determine the biosynthetic origin of the sterols. Incubation experiments with radiolabled Farnesyl Pyrophosphate and cholesterol showed that the sterols are coming from a dietary source. Subcellular localization studies showed that the sterols are part of the cell membrane.

Building Indigenous Firm Capabilities In An Emerging Economy: Knowledge And Cooperation In Brazilian Industry, Carlos L. Rodriguez Jan 2001

Building Indigenous Firm Capabilities In An Emerging Economy: Knowledge And Cooperation In Brazilian Industry, Carlos L. Rodriguez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Not much is known about factors of firm performance in emerging economies (EEs). This study investigates two variables that individually and in combination are posited to affect firms in these turbulent environments: receptivity to the influence of trade associations and dynamic knowledge capabilities. It examines the impact of these determinants on three self-reported measures of performance: innovation adoption, a particularly important indicator in EE environments; and two other dependent variables traditionally used in strategy research: profitability (measured as return on sales), and comparative performance (a self-rating of the firm's performance in comparison to its main industry's competitors). The study also …

Community-Oriented Policing: Testing The Actual Faithfulness Of Implementation By The Police And Their Perceptions Of Its Reduction In Social Disorganization, William D. Collins Jan 2001

Police department attitudes and behaviors associated with faithfully implementing community policing may determine its success for combating social disorganization. The literature review presents a background for understanding community policing and its link to the theory of social disorganization. It is hypothesized that supportive attitudes toward community policing will produce behaviors consistent with its application that may help in combating the disadvantages of social disorganization. Secondhand public data of a two-part community policing survey is used to test each hypothesis. Analysis procedures used for this test consist of reliability comparisons, bivariate correlation and finally OLS regression. The results of this thesis …

Communication Protocol For Acoustic Ad-Hoc Networks Of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles, Bertrand. Baud Jan 2001

This thesis presents the design and implementation of an underwater network communication protocol. The goal is to enable several autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) to form a communication network and to exchange information during at-sea missions. The focus of this work is on the upper layers of the protocol: Network and Transport layers. Routing is a critical issue since all the nodes forming the network are moving. A study and comparison of existing routing algorithms is presented. Two routing algorithms have been chosen and implemented in the network layer of the protocol: Flooding and Destination Sequence Distance Vector Routing. The protocol …

Connected Dominating-Set-Based Routing In Ad Hoc Wireless Networks, Ming. Gao Jan 2001

Connected Dominating-Set-Based Routing In Ad Hoc Wireless Networks, Ming. Gao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

In ad hoc wireless networks, routing protocols are challenged with establishing and maintaining multihop routes in the face of mobility, bandwidth limitation and power constraints. Routing based on a connected dominating set is a promising approach, where the searching space for a router reduced to nodes in the set. A set is dominating if all the nodes in the system are either in the dominating set or adjacent to some nodes in the dominating set. In this thesis, we propose a method of calculating power-aware connected dominating set. Our simulation results show that the proposed approach outperforms several existing approaches …

Consumer Evaluations Of Multiple Price Changes Over Time Versus A Single Dollar Equivalent Price Change, Jitendra Kumar Tewari Jan 2001

Consumer Evaluations Of Multiple Price Changes Over Time Versus A Single Dollar Equivalent Price Change, Jitendra Kumar Tewari

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

In many markets sellers have to make decisions on the rate of price change for a product. Prices can be increased or decreased by making a single large change, or as by making multiple smaller changes over time, leading to the same final price. The concern of sellers is the consumer response, in terms of the product's demand. With the exception of deliberate demarketing, sellers seek to minimize demand decreases in response to price increases, and maximize the positive impact in terms of increased purchases, when prices are decreased. Price changes can be made in a short period, or over …

Cross-Correlation Of Phase Centers To Estimate Direction-Of-Arrival For A 3-Row Bathymetric Sidescan Sonar, Edward T G Crenshaw

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

A new method for calculating the direction-of-arrival (DOA), and thus the bathymetry of the seafloor, is presented. This method will calculate the DOA directly from the phase difference between the phase centers of the array. In parallel, a bathymetric sidescan sonar system originally built at Woods Hole and now here at Florida Atlantic University's Department of Ocean Engineering, was completed. Once this system was working, the above mentioned signal analysis regime will be implemented on actual data to test its validity.
