Small-Angle X-Ray Studies Of Soot Inception And Growth, Jan P. Hessler, Soenke Seifert, Randall E. Winans, Thomas H. Fletcher

Faculty Publications

The high spectral intensity of X-rays produced by the undulator at the Basic Energy Sciences Synchrotron Radiation Center of Argonne's Advanced Photon Source has allowed us to perform small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) studies of the initial distribution of soot particles formed by various fuels. SAXS provides an in situ probe of the morphology of soot in the region between 1 and 100 nm and complements the ex situ technique of electron microscopy. The basic aspects of SAXS and its potential are illustrated with measurement on a laminar flame of acetylene in air. The more complex fuel toluene has been studied …

Nitrogen Transformations During Secondary Coal Pyrolysis, Haifeng Zhang, Thomas H. Fletcher Jan 2001

Nitrogen Transformations During Secondary Coal Pyrolysis, Haifeng Zhang, Thomas H. Fletcher

Faculty Publications

A CO/H2/O2/N2 flame was operated under fuel-rich conditions in a flat flame reactor to provide a high-temperature, oxygen-free environment to study secondary reactions of coal volatiles. The distributions of fuel nitrogen in the devolatilization products of four coals, ranging from high volatile bituminous to lignite, were obtained at gas temperatures ranging from 1159 to 1858 K. It was found that the initial nitrogen released was contained almost exclusively in the tar for all coals. Release of nitrogen from the char as light gases started at a later stage than tar nitrogen release. During secondary reactions, …

A Web-Enabled Temporal Database Human Resources Application, Joseph A. Brooke Iii Jan 2001

A Web-Enabled Temporal Database Human Resources Application, Joseph A. Brooke Iii

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Despite the inclusion of a variety of time-related or 'temporal' datatypes in the SQL-92 standard, vendors of commercially-available Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS) have universally elected to not fully comply with the standard. Perhaps even more frustrating is the fact that each vendor has chosen to include a different subset of temporal datatypes than their competitors, with most vendors adding a proprietary twist to their datatypes not even contained within the standard.

This lack of conformity has left users of these database products faced with a difficult choice: either avoid temporal functionality within their database applications or develop and manage …

Exposure Drafts, Comment Letters, and Statements of Position

The proposed Statement on Auditing Standards (SAS) provides an updated framework within which the auditor can exercise professional judgment in determining the nature and extent of audit documentation needed to comply with professional standards. The guidance in the current documentation standard, which is SAS No. 41, Working Papers (AICPA, Professional Standards, vol. 1, AU sec. 339), has not been significantly changed since September 1967. Given the changes in the auditing environment in recent years, the Auditing Standards Board (ASB) undertook to develop guidance that would provide an updated framework for practitioners performing audits of financial statements. The proposed SAS and …

The Uptake And Flux Of Dissolved Nitrogen In Marine Waters, Andrew Paul Rees Jan 2001

The Uptake And Flux Of Dissolved Nitrogen In Marine Waters, Andrew Paul Rees

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The biological uptake and transformation of inorganic nitrogen species is described for contrasting marine environments which include a sea loch, riverine plume, polar marginal ice-zone, continental shelf break, oligotrophic ocean and a mesoscale eddy. Uptake of nitrate and ammonium by phytoplankton has been determined using the stable isotope as a tracer and continuous flow stable isotope-ratio mass spectrometry. The analysis of dissolved and atmospheric nitrous oxide was made using electron capture detector gas chromatography in a novel configuration which also allowed for the simultaneous analysis of methane from a single sample. Significant advances in the study of the marine nitrogen …

Students' Perceptions Of Part-Time And Tenured/Tenure-Track Faculty: Accessibility, Mentoring, And Extra-Class Communication, Amy M. Bippus, Catherine F. Brooks, Timothy G. Plax, Patricia Kearney

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article examines students' perceptions of teacher accessibility and mentoring ability, as well as students' likelihood of pursuing extra-class communication (ECC) with their instructors, as related to teacher employment status. The article begins with an overview of differences between part-time and tenured/tenure-track faculty members, with particular attention to how these differences may impact students' perceptions of instructors' accessibility. It then addresses the mentoring relationship between students and faculty, and discuss how faculty employment status may affect students' beliefs that they will receive useful mentoring from their instructors. Finally, the article introduces the construct of ECC and explores how faculty employment …

Hostile Work Environment: What Communication Administrators And Educators Can Learn From Communication-Based Law, Craig Newburger Jan 2001

Hostile Work Environment: What Communication Administrators And Educators Can Learn From Communication-Based Law, Craig Newburger

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article examines the university sexual harassment policies which guides communication administrators in reacting to and managing both student and faculty sexual harassment-based allegations. The body of sexual harassment-based law, created and disseminated by persons who are not communication administrators or educators, focuses directly on specific human communication behaviors and assigns criteria for evaluating the relative lawfulness of the behaviors. The article intends to underscore the variety of heuristic possibilities offered by inquiry into communication-based laws, for both communication administrators and educators.
