Structured interviews were conducted and taped of twenty faculty members at the study institution, detailing the above factors. An overall …

Digital Archives, Shari Herlein Manley Jan 2001

Digital Archives, Shari Herlein Manley

Graduate Research Papers

This research examined the trend of digitizing archives and the problems digitization causes. A textual analysis was used to determine trends and issues related to this topic. The researcher used articles on the topic of digital archives from 1995 to 2000, as found in the Library Literature database and paper index. It was found that the research questions initially asked by the researcher are being asked in the population articles as well. The permanence of the digital archive is questionable, as is the digital document. The safety of the document is also at risk. The ability to access documents is …

Order-Disorder Phase Transitions In Kno2 , Csno2, And Tlno2 Crystals: A Molecular Dynamics Study, Chun-Gang Duan, Wai-Ning Mei, R. W. Smith, Jianjun Liu, M. M. Ossowski, John R. Hardy Jan 2001

Order-Disorder Phase Transitions In Kno2 , Csno2, And Tlno2 Crystals: A Molecular Dynamics Study, Chun-Gang Duan, Wai-Ning Mei, R. W. Smith, Jianjun Liu, M. M. Ossowski, John R. Hardy

John R. Hardy Papers

The order-disorder phase transitions of KNO2 , CsNO2, and TlNO2 have been studied using parameter-free molecular dynamics simulation. It is found that the phase transitions in nitrites investigated are driven by the rotations of the NO2- ions about different axes together with displacements of cations and anions. We successfully reproduce the high-temperature phases of these nitrites, i.e., the NaCl-like structure for KNO2 and CsCl-like structure for Cs(Tl)NO2. Based on the investigation of the radial distribution function of the cations and anions, we explain why KNO2 and Cs(Tl)NO2 form quite …

Two-Center Effect On Low-Energy Electron Emission In Collisions Of 1-Mev/U Bare Ions With Atomic Hydrogen, Molecular Hydrogen, And Helium: Ii. H2 And He, Lokesh C. Tribedi, P. Richard, L. Gulya´S, M. Eugene Rudd Jan 2001

Two-Center Effect On Low-Energy Electron Emission In Collisions Of 1-Mev/U Bare Ions With Atomic Hydrogen, Molecular Hydrogen, And Helium: Ii. H2 And He, Lokesh C. Tribedi, P. Richard, L. Gulya´S, M. Eugene Rudd

M. Eugene Rudd Publications

We have studied the energy and angular distributions of low-energy electron emission in collisions of bare carbon ions of 1-MeV/u energy with He and H2 targets. The double-differential cross sections (DDCS’s) are measured for electrons with energies between 0.5 and 300 eV emitted within an angular range of 15° to 160°. The large forward-backward asymmetry observed in the angular distributions is explained in terms of the two-center effect. Single differential cross sections (SDCS’s) and total cross sections are also derived by integrating the DDCS’s over emission angles and energies. The data are compared with different theoretical calculations based on …

M. Eugene Rudd Publications

We have investigated ionization mechanisms in fast ion-atom collisions by measuring the low-energy electron emission cross sections in a pure three-body collision involving bare carbon ions (v=6.35 a.u.) colliding with atomic hydrogen targets. The measurements have also been extended to molecular hydrogen and helium targets. In this paper we provide the energy and angular distributions of double differential cross sections of low-energy electron emission for atomic hydrogen targets. The Slevin rf source with a high degree of dissociation was used to produce the atomic H target. It is found that the two-center effect has a major influence on …

Search For Electroweak Production Of Single Top Quarks In Pp̅ Collisions, B. Abbott Jan 2001

Search For Electroweak Production Of Single Top Quarks In Pp̅ Collisions, B. Abbott

Gregory Snow Publications

We present a search for electroweak production of single top quarks in the electron+jets and muon+jets decay channels. The measurements use ≈90 pb-1 of data from Run 1 of the Fermilab Tevatron collider, collected at 1.8 TeV with the D Ø detector between 1992 and 1995. We use events that include a tagging muon, implying the presence of a b jet, to set an upper limit at the 95% confidence level on the cross section for the s-channel process pp̅→tb+X of 39 pb. The upper limit for the t-channel processpp̅→tqb+X …

Perspectives Of Giant Magnetoresistance, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, David G. Pettifor Jan 2001

Perspectives Of Giant Magnetoresistance, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, David G. Pettifor

Evgeny Tsymbal Publications

Giant magnetoresistance (GMR) is one of the most fascinating discoveries in thin-film magnetism, which combines both tremendous technological potential and deep fundamental physics. Within a decade of GMR being discovered in 1988 commercial devices based on this phenomenon, such as hard-disk read-heads, magnetic field sensors and magnetic memory chips, had become available in the market. These achievements would not have been possible without a detailed understanding of the physics of GMR, which requires a quantum-mechanical insight into the electronic spin-dependent transport in magnetic structures.

Major Herbicides In Ground Water: Results From The National Water-Quality Assessment, Jack . E. Barbash, Gail P. Thelin, Dana W. Kolpin, Robert J. Gilliom

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

To improve understanding of the factors affecting pesticide occurrence in ground water, patterns of detection were examined for selected herbicides, based primarily on results from the National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) program. The NAWQA data were derived from 2227 sites (wells and springs) sampled in 20 major hydro- logic basins across the USA from 1993 to 1995. Results are presented for six high-use herbicides—atrazine (2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-iso-propylamino- s-triazine), cyanazine (2-[4-chloro-6-ethylamino-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl]amino]-2-methylpropionitrile), simazine (2-chloro-4,6-bis- [ethylamino]-s-triazine), alachlor (2-chloro-N-[2,6-diethylphenyl]-N- [methoxymethyl]acetamide), acetochlor (2-chloro-N-[ethoxymethyl]- N-[ 2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl]acetamide), and metolachlor (2-chloro-N- [2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl]-N-[2-methoxy-1-methylethyl]acetamide)— as well as for prometon (2,4-bis[isopropylamino]-6-methoxy-s-triazine), a nonagricultural herbicide detected frequently during the study. Concentrations were <1 μg L-1 at 98% …

Martineauian Sociology And Our Disciplinary Future, Michael R. Hill Jan 2001

Martineauian Sociology And Our Disciplinary Future, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

I argue above, in concert with my colleagues, that we must take Harriet Martineau seriously, and that there are sound reasons for so doing. The history, sophistication, innovativeness, and continuing resonance of her work and ideas are dramatic, engaging, and impressive by all of the yardsticks used to assess the merit and importance of our sociological founders. We are asked, on occasion, "Yes, but what possible difference does Martineau make to sociology today?" Sheer impudence aside, it is a question to answer carefully, with probity, and our answers must be convincing rather than contrived. The gravity of the question comes …

Play Patterns And Gender, Carolyn P. Edwards, Lisa Knoche, Asiye Kumru Jan 2001

Play Patterns And Gender, Carolyn P. Edwards, Lisa Knoche, Asiye Kumru

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This cross-cultural analysis examines the gendered patterns of play seen in children worldwide. Play is a culturally universal activity through which children explore themselves and their environment, test out and practice different social roles, and learn to interact with other children and adults. Early in life, children identify themselves as a “girl” or a “boy,” and this basic self-categorization lays a foundation for their developing beliefs about with whom, what, how, and where they will play. Children play an active role in their own and their peers’ “gender socialization” (the process by which they come to acquire the knowledge, values, …

The Impact Of Childhood Sexual Abuse On Later Sexual Victimization Among Runaway Youth, Kimberly A. Tyler, Dan R. Hoyt, Les B. Whitbeck, Ana Mari Cauce Jan 2001

The Impact Of Childhood Sexual Abuse On Later Sexual Victimization Among Runaway Youth, Kimberly A. Tyler, Dan R. Hoyt, Les B. Whitbeck, Ana Mari Cauce

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Path analysis was used to investigate the impact of childhood sexual abuse on later sexual victimization among 372 homeless and runaway youth in Seattle. Young people were interviewed directly on the streets and in shelters by outreach workers in youth service agencies. High rates of both childhood sexual abuse and street sexual victimization were reported, with females experiencing much greater rates compared with their male counterparts. Early sexual abuse in the home increased the likelihood of later sexual victimization on the streets indirectly by increasing the amount of time at risk, deviant peer affiliations, participating in deviant subsistence strategies, and …

Polarimetric Processing Of Coherent Random Noise Radar Data For Buried Object Detection, Yi Xu, Ram M. Narayanan, Xiojian Xu, John O. Curtis Jan 2001

Polarimetric Processing Of Coherent Random Noise Radar Data For Buried Object Detection, Yi Xu, Ram M. Narayanan, Xiojian Xu, John O. Curtis

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Random noise polarimetry is a new radar technique for high-resolution probing of subsurface objects and interfaces. The University of Nebraska has developed a polarimetric random noise radar system based on the heterodyne correlation technique. Simulation studies and performance tests on the system confirm its ability to respond to phase differences in the received signals. In addition to polarimetric processing capability and the simplified system design, random noise radar also possesses other desirable features, such as immunity from radio frequency interference (RFI). The paper discusses the theoretical foundations of random noise polarimetry, and presents examples out of the entire data set …

Effect Of Creatine On Performance, Tom Smith Jan 2001

Effect Of Creatine On Performance, Tom Smith

Graduate Research Papers

Among the nutritional substances that are suspected of having a performance-enhancing potential, creatine monohydrate has become one of the most popular in recent years. More than 2.5 million kg of creatine was estimated to being consumed in the past year. This can make evident that the expectations of the benefit of creatine by people is very high (Terjung, 2000).

A Survey Of Selected Drinking Behaviors Of Student-Koreans At Kook-Min University, Sangmin Kim Jan 2001

A Survey Of Selected Drinking Behaviors Of Student-Koreans At Kook-Min University, Sangmin Kim

Graduate Research Papers

Students, aged 18 to 25, face many responsibilities and challenges such as social development, higher education activities, vocational activities, living arrangements, seeking marital bonds, and developing economic independence. For the college and university student, it is a major stage as a young adult to pursue a higher educational goal and to learn new ways of relating to other students before stepping into a real job environment (Prendergast, 1994). However, along with their responsibilities and personal development, young people might be exposed to negative sides of adulthood. While the majority of college students are responsible for maintaining positive health, it is …

Review Of Feels Like Far: A Rancher's Life On The Great Plains By Linda Hasselstrom, Nancy Zuercher Jan 2001

Review Of Feels Like Far: A Rancher's Life On The Great Plains By Linda Hasselstrom, Nancy Zuercher

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Feels Like Far is a poignant autobiography. Linda Hasselstrom observes like a naturalist, contemplates like a philosopher, and writes like a poet as she pursues her central question: "Death washed away the solid bedrock of my life as I drove back and forth across the plains this year. ... Are these changes in my life vortical growth? Or the destructive confusion of a prairie twister ?" Flashbacks and reflections weave past and present together.

As she ponders her husband's death, her father's aging and death, her mother's decline, her best friend's death, her move from her ranch to Cheyenne, and …

Women's Sense Of Place On The American High Plains, Cary W. Dewit Jan 2001

Women's Sense Of Place On The American High Plains, Cary W. Dewit

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The plight of women on the American Great Plains is a familiar one to anyone who has explored the region's history. Account after account exists of women during the early years of Euro-American settlement who suffered hardship, persevered, and triumphed, or who succumbed to homesickness, lost their children or husbands, and sometimes descended into madness.2 The women's historical situation on the Plains has also been popularized in fiction and dramatized or romanticized in dozens of films.3 But what of today's Plains women?

Few sources describe women's contemporary experience of Plains life. Some works have given us a glimpse …

Polyacrylamide For Surface Irrigation To Increase Nutrient-Use Efficiency And Protectwater Quality, Rodrick D. Lentz, Robert E. Sojka, Charles W. Robbins, Dennis C. Kincaid, Dale T. Westermann Jan 2001

Polyacrylamide For Surface Irrigation To Increase Nutrient-Use Efficiency And Protectwater Quality, Rodrick D. Lentz, Robert E. Sojka, Charles W. Robbins, Dennis C. Kincaid, Dale T. Westermann

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Furrow irrigation systems have a greater application capacity, are less costly, and use less energy than sprinkler systems but furrow irrigation produces greater runoff, erosion, and deep percolation losses. Phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) losses are associated with runoff sediment, and can be minimized by eliminating irrigationinduced erosion. Excessive leaching of inorganic and organic solutes commonly occurs at the inflow region of furrow irrigated fields where infiltration opportunity times are longer. In one conservation practice, a high molecular weight, anionic polyacrylamide (PAM) is applied to advancing furrow stream flows at a concentration of 10 mg L-1. Because PAM …

Inhibition Of Erythrocyte Δ- Aminolevulinic Acid Dehydratase (Alad) Activity In Fish From Waters Affects By Lead Smelters, Christopher J. Schmitt, Colleen A. Caldwell, Bill Olsen, Dave Serdar Jan 2001

Inhibition Of Erythrocyte Δ- Aminolevulinic Acid Dehydratase (Alad) Activity In Fish From Waters Affects By Lead Smelters, Christopher J. Schmitt, Colleen A. Caldwell, Bill Olsen, Dave Serdar

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

We assessed the effects on fish of lead (Pb) released to streams by smelters located in Trail, BC (Canada), E. Helena, MT, Herculaneum, MO, and Glover, MO. Fish were collected by electrofishing from sites located downstream of smelters and from reference sites. Blood from each fish was analyzed for δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) activity and hemoglobin (Hb), and samples of blood, liver, or carcass were analyzed for Pb, zinc (Zn), or both. Fish collected downstream of all four smelters sites had elevated Pb concentrations, decreased ALAD activity, or both relative to their respective reference sites. At E. Helena, fish from …

Remnant Colloform Pyrite At The Haile Gold Deposit, South Carolina: A Textural Key To Genesis, Nora Foley, Robert A. Ayuso, Robert R. Seal Ii Jan 2001

Remnant Colloform Pyrite At The Haile Gold Deposit, South Carolina: A Textural Key To Genesis, Nora Foley, Robert A. Ayuso, Robert R. Seal Ii

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Auriferous iron sulfide-bearing deposits of the Carolina slate belt have distinctive mineralogical and textural features—traits that provide a basis to construct models of ore deposition. Our identification of paragenetically early types of pyrite, especially remnant colloform, crustiform, and layered growth textures of pyrite containing electrum and pyrrhotite, establishes unequivocally that gold mineralization was coeval with deposition of host rocks and not solely related to Paleozoic tectonic events. Ore horizons at the Haile deposit, South Carolina, contain many remnants of early pyrite: (1) fine-grained cubic pyrite disseminated along bedding; (2) finegrained spongy, rounded masses of pyrite that may envelop or drape …

2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-P-Dioxin Induces Apoptotic Cell Death And Cytochrome P4501a Expression In Developing Fundulus Heteroclitus Embryos, Barbara Holland Toomey, Susan Bello, Mark E. Hahn, Susannah Cantrell, Peggy Wright, Donald E. Tillitt, Richard T. Di Giulio Jan 2001

2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-P-Dioxin Induces Apoptotic Cell Death And Cytochrome P4501a Expression In Developing Fundulus Heteroclitus Embryos, Barbara Holland Toomey, Susan Bello, Mark E. Hahn, Susannah Cantrell, Peggy Wright, Donald E. Tillitt, Richard T. Di Giulio

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Fundulus heteroclitus embryos were exposed to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) during early development using nanoinjection or water bath exposure. TCDD caused developmental abnormalities that included hemorrhaging, loss of vascular integrity, edema, stunted development and death. The LC50 and LD50 of TCDD for Fundulus embryos were ~19.7 ± 9.5 pg TCDD/µl (water bath) and 0.25 ± 0.09 ng TCDD/g embryo (nanoinjection). To identify a possible cause for these developmental abnormalities we analyzed the effects of TCDD on apoptotic cell death and cytochrome P4501A (CYP1A) expression in the embryos. TCDD exposure increased apoptotic cell death in several tissues including brain, …

Fluvial Processes And Passive Rehabilitation Of The Lisbon Bottom Side-Channel Chute, Lower Missouri River, Robert B. Jacobson, Mark S. Laustrup, Michael D. Chapman Jan 2001

Fluvial Processes And Passive Rehabilitation Of The Lisbon Bottom Side-Channel Chute, Lower Missouri River, Robert B. Jacobson, Mark S. Laustrup, Michael D. Chapman

United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District

Multiple large floods in 1993-1997 on the Lower Missouri River carved a side-channel chute through the river bottom at Lisbon, Missouri. Although similar in some respects to engineered side-channel chutes designed for habitat rehabilitation projects, the Lisbon Bottom chute has been unique in that it was allowed to evolve for more than four years with minimal stabilization. During the wet years, 1996-1999, the chute was subjected to abnormally high discharges and passed as much as 20% of the total discharge of the Missouri River. Relatively unrestrained fluvial processes during this time created a wide channel with highly diverse habitats. The …
