Chapter 13. The 15 Kda Selenoprotein (Sepl5): Functional Studies And A Role In Cancer Etiology, Vadim Gladyshev, Alan M. Diamond, Dolph L. Hatfield
Vadim Gladyshev Publications
The 15 kDa selenoprotein (Sepl5) is one of several recently identified selenoproteins. It contains a single selenocysteine residue in the middle of a 162-amino acid open reading frame and has no detectable homology to known proteins. The human Sepl5 gene spans 5 1 kb, has 5 exons and is located on chromosome 1 at position p3 1. The gene contains two single nucleotide polymorphisms in the 3'-untranslated region (3'-UTR) including one in the SECIS element, that are distributed differently between Caucasians and African Americans. Sep15 localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum where it is tightly bound to UDP-glucose:glycoprotein glucosyltransferase, a protein …

Chapter 25. Selenium In Biology And Human Health: Controversies And Perspectives, Vadim Gladyshev
Vadim Gladyshev Publications
Important unresolved questions raised by the contributors of this book and addressing roles of selenium in biology and human health are discussed. Resolving major scientific controversies in the field should further highlight a bright future for selenium in fundamental science, biotechnology and medicine.

Effects Of Stable Flies (Diptera: Muscidae) On Weight Gains Of Grazing Yearling Cattle, J.B. Campbell, S.R. Skoda, Dennis Berkebile, D. J. Boxler, G.D. Thomas, D. C. Adams, R. Davis
Effects Of Stable Flies (Diptera: Muscidae) On Weight Gains Of Grazing Yearling Cattle, J.B. Campbell, S.R. Skoda, Dennis Berkebile, D. J. Boxler, G.D. Thomas, D. C. Adams, R. Davis
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Differences in weight gains caused by stable flies, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.), on grazing yearling steer/calves averaged 0.2 kg per steer in a 3-yr study on canyon range pastures in West Central Nebraska. Stable fly numbers averaged 0.85 per front leg on treated calves and 3.64 per front leg on control calves. In 2 of the 3 yr after the grazing trials were completed, the calves were placed in a feedlot and fed a finishing ration. Compensatory gain did not occur in the feedlot after the stable fly stress was removed.

Studies On The Formation Of Dna-Cationic Lipid Composite Films And Dna Hybridization In The Composites, Murali Sastry, Vidya Ramakrishnan, Mrunalini Pattarkine, Krishna N. Ganesh
Faculty Works
The formation of composite films of double-stranded DNA and cationic lipid molecules (octadecylamine, ODA) and the hybridization of complementary single-stranded DNA molecules in such composite films are demonstrated. The immobilization of DNA is accomplished by simple immersion of a thermally evaporated ODA film in the DNA solution at close to physiological pH. The entrapment of the DNA molecules in the cationic lipid film is dominated by attractive electrostatic interaction between the negatively charged phosphate backbone of the DNA molecules and the protonated amine molecules in the thermally evaporated film and has been quantified using quartz crystal microgravimetry (QCM). Fluorescence studies …
Trophic Dynamics Of Pinniped Populations In Alaska Using Stable Carbon And Nitrogen Isotope Ratios, Amy Christia Hirons
Trophic Dynamics Of Pinniped Populations In Alaska Using Stable Carbon And Nitrogen Isotope Ratios, Amy Christia Hirons
Marine Biology
Trophic changes in populations of Stellar sea lions (Eumetorias jubatus), northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) and harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) in the eastern Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska were studied using stable isotope analysis. Declining populations of all three species of pinnipeds prompted this study to determine if changes in diet, likely resulting from food limitation, contributed to the declines. Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios were analyzed in the vibrissae (whiskers) and body tissues of pinnipeds from 1993-1998 and compared with muscle tissue from prey species during the same time period to determine pinniped trophic dynamics. Vibrissae growth …
Modeling Stand-Level Canopy Maintenance Respiration Of Black Spruce Ecosystems In Alaska: Implications For Spatial And Temporal Scaling, Xinxian Zhang
Modeling Stand-Level Canopy Maintenance Respiration Of Black Spruce Ecosystems In Alaska: Implications For Spatial And Temporal Scaling, Xinxian Zhang
Biological Sciences
Canopy respiration represents an important part of the carbon budget of black spruce forests. In this study I scaled hourly models of foliar maintenance respiration (Rm) to estimate canopy Rm for individual stands, and investigated issues in scaling the models to estimate canopy Rm using mean monthly temperature data. I used data from several stands to develop hourly stand-specific and stand-independent models of canopy Rm. Analysis of stimulated canopy Rm indicated that stand-level controls over foliar N concentration should be considered in models that estimate canopy Rm of black spruce stands across the landscape. Uncertainty analyses indicated that the parameter …
Winter Vertebrate Browsing Of Birch: Effects On The Use Of Leaf Litter Leachates By Stream Microorganisms, Jeffrey L. Estensen
Winter Vertebrate Browsing Of Birch: Effects On The Use Of Leaf Litter Leachates By Stream Microorganisms, Jeffrey L. Estensen
Biological Sciences
Winter browsing of birch leads to chemical changes in leaves of the following growing season, potentially generating differences in the quality of leachates derived from leaf litter and in leachate use by stream microorganisms. The effects of moose browsing were tested on leachates from leaves collected from browsed and unbrowsed trees and inoculated with microbial communities. Respiration and bacterial abundance were used to assess qualitative differences in leachates. Microbes cultured in leachates derived from leaves of browsed trees had significantly higher rates of oxygen uptake. There were no significant differences in bacterial abundance between treatments. The basis for the qualitative …
