Health Status Of Adult Montanans In Supported And Semi-Independent Living Arrangements, Meg A. Traci Ph.D., Sarah Geurts B.S., Tom Seekins Ph.D., Rebecca Burke M.S., Kathleen Humphries, Lisa Brennan M.L.S., University Of Montana Rural Institute

Health and Wellness

This study reports on the prevalence and severity of secondary conditions in adults with developmental disabilities living in 33 Montana counties. "Secondary conditions" are additional health problems acquired by an individual with a disability. Although the personal, social, and financial costs of these secondary conditions are extraordinarily high, they are frequently preventable. Ten of the top twelve secondary conditions reported by survey respondents involved issues that can be addressed by wellness activities or lifestyle management. In particular, survey ratings of “Communication,” “Weight,” and “Physical Fitness” problems suggest that these areas may contribute to other problems. Efforts to improve communication skills, …

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Breed differences in performance characteristics are an important genetic resource for improving efficiency of beef production. Diverse breeds are required to exploit heterosis and breed complementarity through crossbreeding and development of composite populations to match genetic potential with diverse markets, feed resources and climates. Beef producers are under increasing pressure to reduce fat while maintaining or improving tenderness and palatability of products. No single breed excels in all traits of economic importance to beef production. This report presents preliminary results from Cycle VII of the Germplasm Evaluation Program at the Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (U.S. Meat …

Living Well Could Save $31 Million Annually, Craig Ravesloot Ph.D., Catherine Ipsen, Tom Seekins Ph.D., University Of Montana Rural Institute

Health and Wellness

Behavior change can improve health status for many adults. Further, for adults with chronic illness and permanent injuries, a growing body of literature identifies health promotion as both effective in improving health and cost-effective compared to treatment alternatives. Yet third-party payers (Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurance) typically do not reimburse health promotion interventions. This is a problem for many individuals with disabilities who have significant health care costs and cannot pay for health promotion programs. For more than a decade, the Office on Disability and Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has supported research culminating in the …

Mammalian Play: Training For The Unexpected, Marek Špinka, Ruth C. Newberry, Marc Bekoff Jun 2001

Mammalian Play: Training For The Unexpected, Marek Špinka, Ruth C. Newberry, Marc Bekoff

Ethology Collection

In this review, we present a new conceptual framework for the study of play behavior, a hitherto puzzling array of seemingly purposeless and unrelated behavioral elements that are recognizable as play throughout the mammalian lineage. Our major new functional hypothesis is that play enables animals to develop flexible kinematic and emotional responses to unexpected events in which they experience a sudden loss of control. Specifically, we propose that play functions to increase the versatility of movements used to recover from sudden shock such as loss of balance and falling over, and to enhance the ability of animals to cope emotionally …

Fisheries Research Report No.128 - Aquaculture And Related Biological Attributes Of Abalone Species In Australia - A Review., Kylie A. Freeman

Fisheries Research Reports

China and Taiwan are the major producers of cultured abalone; with annual production estimated at 3,500 and 3,000 tonnes respectively. The world production of cultured abalone sold in 1999 was 7,775 tonnes. Australian farm production was still relatively low (89 tonne in 1999) but numerous abalone farms have been proposed and many have been constructed. On a national scale, Tasmania and South Australia are the major states involved in temperate abalone culture; however, new projects have commenced in Victoria and considerable interest exists in New South Wales. Pilot scale trials with tropical abalone aquaculture using the Donkey-ear abalone (Haliotis asinina) …

Section of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the standard of knowledge among people with diabetes.METHOD: Two hundred and thirty patients were randomly chosen from outpatient clinics and a 34-item multiple choice questionnaire administered to them. The questionnaire was structured to assess knowledge about the disease state, diagnostic tests, complications and management. Results: The average score of correct answers for the group was 40%. A significantly higher score correlated with younger age (16-30 years), educational status and regular follow-up with a diabetic clinic. There was no significant difference in the knowledge score between males and females or between those on …

High Consumption And Global Justice, Harry Van Der Linden Jun 2001

High Consumption And Global Justice, Harry Van Der Linden

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Justice requires that high consumption in affluent societies be slowed down for the sake of eradicating extreme poverty in the developing world and improving the condition of its very moderate consumers. High consumption places environmental and resource burdens and restrictions on the economic growth options of developing countries without bringing commensurate benefits. Moreover, high consumers enjoy products made in less developed countries by workers who have inadequate wages and often labor in unhealthy and unsafe conditions.

Contemporary high consumption is characterized by a continuous raising of the standards of satisfactory spending. This process is visible in many American consumption patterns: …

Combined, Functional Genomic-Biochemical Approach To Intermediary Metabolism: Interaction Of Acivicin, A Glutamine Amidotransferase Inhibitor, With Escherichia Coli K-12, D. R. Smulski, L. L. Huang, M. P. Mccluskey, M. J. Gladnick Reeve, Amy Cheng Vollmer, T. K. Van Dyk, R. A. Larossa Jun 2001

Combined, Functional Genomic-Biochemical Approach To Intermediary Metabolism: Interaction Of Acivicin, A Glutamine Amidotransferase Inhibitor, With Escherichia Coli K-12, D. R. Smulski, L. L. Huang, M. P. Mccluskey, M. J. Gladnick Reeve, Amy Cheng Vollmer, T. K. Van Dyk, R. A. Larossa

Biology Faculty Works

Acivicin, a modified amino acid natural product, is a glutamine analog. Thus, it might interfere with metabolism by hindering glutamine transport, formation, or usage in processes such as transamidation and translation. This molecule prevented the growth of Escherichia coli in minimal medium unless the medium was supplemented with a purine or histidine, suggesting that the HisHF enzyme, a glutamine amidotransferase, was the target of acivicin action. This enzyme, purified from E. coli, was inhibited by low concentrations of acivicin. Acivicin inhibition was overcome by the presence of three distinct genetic regions when harbored on multicopy plasmids. Comprehensive transcript profiling using …

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The impact of the leaf-chlorosis-eliciting Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko), and the nonchlorosis-eliciting bird cherry-oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi (L.), feeding on D. noxia-susceptible and -resistant cereals was examined during the period (i.e., 3, 6, and 9 d after aphid infestation) that leaf chlorosis developed. After aphid number, leaf rolling and chlorosis ratings, and fresh leaf weight were recorded on each sampling date, total protein content, peroxidase, catalase, and polyphenol oxidase activities of each plant sample were determined spectrophotometrically. Although R. padi and D. noxia feeding caused significant increase of total protein content in comparison with the control cereal …

Adapting The Habitat For Humanity Model To Sabah, Malaysia, Rozita Abdul Manap

Masters Theses

Building sustainable housing and community developments through the Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) homeownership program, is one of the many ways that has successfully improved housing standards for low-income communities in the U.S. Findings show that this model can be used as a mechanism to stimulate serious programs and as an alternative to improve and solve housing problems.

This study focuses on how the Habitat for Humanity model can be applied towards increasing the benefits to the community in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Located on Borneo Island, Sabah is the second largest state in the Federation of Malaysia, but is regarded …
