Theses and Dissertations

The overall health and well-being of Romanian adoptees has deteriorated significantly as a result of the deficient living conditions of Romanian orphanages. Several of the effects of institutionalized children include; developmental delays in speech, gross and fine motor areas, and emotional and behavioral impediments. Moreover, these children may develop mental and/or physical disabilities and an overabundance of health problems. This study reports findings from a survey completed by 38 American families with adopted children from Romania. The results of this study reflect; parents perceptions of their child's health at the time of adoption and current health status, the child's behavioral …

Health Start School-Based Clinic Staff And Hmong Adolescents: Does The Servant Leadership Theory Apply?, Tie H. Oei Jul 2001

Health Start School-Based Clinic Staff And Hmong Adolescents: Does The Servant Leadership Theory Apply?, Tie H. Oei

Theses and Graduate Projects

This pilot study investigated whether the staff at Health Start's school-based clinics and the Hmong adolescents they serve are in agreement as to what health services Hmong adolescents want from the clinic and staff. In investigating this issue, servant leadership theory also was applied to answer the question: Does using servant leadership theory assist the staff in delivering culturally congruent healthcare to Hmong adolescents?

According to Servant Leadership Theory, leaders first want to serve for the purpose of developing a healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous follower. This theory, manifested by Robert K. Greenleaf through his work experiences and thinking about …

The Foraging Ecology Of The Juvenile Gopher Tortoise, Gopheruspol Yphemus, Terri Anne Stilson Jul 2001

The Foraging Ecology Of The Juvenile Gopher Tortoise, Gopheruspol Yphemus, Terri Anne Stilson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Food plant preferences of juvenile gopher tortoises, Gopherus polyphemus, were investigated in a west central Florida population. The juvenile gopher tortoises were free-ranging and were located in a sandhill habitat subject to yearly prescribed burns. Diet was determined by foraging observations, in which the number of bites taken per taxon, the number of plants sampled per taxon, and the amount of each taxon available along the foraging path were recorded. Preference was determined with Manly's alpha index of preference and Jacob's D electivity index. Selected plants in the habitat were analyzed for relative nitrogen content to investigate whether preferred …

Paterson's Curse Management Handbook, Amelia Mclarty, Errol Kruger, Peter Stubbs, John Peirce, Chris Hawkins, Paul Wilson, Simon Merewether

Bulletins 4000 -

Paterson’s curse (Echium plantagineum) is one of the most damaging weeds to the Australian meat and wool industries. It infests an estimated 33 million hectares in southern Australia, at an annual cost to the sheep industry of $250 million in lost pasture productivity, control costs and wool contamination. In WA, it is found on about 5000 agricultural properties infesting some 500,000 ha. It is an extremely invasive weed, that reduces pasture productivity and stock carrying capacity by competing with and excluding more beneficial pasture species. The weed is also toxic to stock. It is important to implement control measures on …

Influence Of Inoculum Size On Phytase Production And Growth In Solid-State Fermentation By Aspergillus Niger, Chundakkadu Krishna, Sue E. Nokes

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Solid–state fermentation is experiencing renewed interest for industrial enzyme production. Previous studies on the effects of fungal inoculum size on product yield have focused on spore inoculum. However, some organisms require vegetative inocula. This study investigated the effects of initial inoculum colony age, vegetative inoculum size, and duration of fermentation on the production of fungal biomass and phytase in solid–state fermentation using Aspergillus niger grown on wheat bran and soy meal. Initial inocula from 7– and 14–day–old potato dextrose agar (PDA) plates were used to study the effect of inoculum colony age in liquid culture and its further influence on …
