Carbon Dynamics In Peat Bogs: Insights From Substrate Macromolecular Chemistry, Kuder Tomasz, Michael A. Kruge Sep 2001

Carbon Dynamics In Peat Bogs: Insights From Substrate Macromolecular Chemistry, Kuder Tomasz, Michael A. Kruge

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The macromolecular compositions of subfossil plants from boreal Sphagnum bogs and restiad bogs (New Zealand) have been studied by pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry to evaluate the extent of degradation in the anoxic zone (catotelm) of a peat bog. Degradation of vascular plant polysaccharides was apparent only into the upper catotelm. Sphagnum was degraded more slowly than vascular plants, but no cessation of degradation was observed. The inferred rate of degradation varied depending on type of plant, extent of aerobic, precatotelmic degradation, and mode of litter deposition (rooting versus at the surface). Environmental forcing on anaerobic carbon dynamics would potentially be largest …

Genomes, Gould, And Emergence, Ursula Goodenough Sep 2001

Genomes, Gould, And Emergence, Ursula Goodenough

Biology Faculty Research

The publication of the human genome has elicited commentary to the effect that, since fewer genes were identified than anticipated, it follows that genes are less important to human biology than anticipated. The flaws in this syllogism are explained in the context of a treatise on how genomes operate and evolve and how genes function to produce embryos and brains. Most of our most cherished human traits are the result of the emergence of new properties from preexisting genetically scripted ideas, offering countless opportunities to celebrate the evolutionary process.

Technological Choice: California Wild Rice Processing Under Uncertain Demand, Jay E. Noel, James J. Ahern, Jess Errecarte, Kyle Schroeder

Agribusiness

This study is concerned with technological choice under uncertain demand conditions. It begins with an overview of the California wild rice market. The wild rice product is described, the wild rice industry is review and wild rice market conditions are explored. The overview is followed by a discussion of wild rice processing. Technological choice and competitive strategy issues are reviewed and then a framework for choosing between two competing technologies is proposed. The two competing technologies differ in their ability to store and process wild rice over a marketing year. The traditional technologies requires almost immediate processing of the harvested …

The Good Food Guide For Sheep : Feeding Sheep For Meat Production In The Areas Of Western Australia, Keith Croker, Peter Watt, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia Sep 2001

The Good Food Guide For Sheep : Feeding Sheep For Meat Production In The Areas Of Western Australia, Keith Croker, Peter Watt, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia

Bulletins 4000 -

The Good Food Guide for Sheep has been produced to provide Western Australian farmers with a concise compilation of current information on feeding sheep for meat production. Although there are already numerous publications about sheep nutrition, many of them relate to wool production, reproduction or drought feeding, or they concentrate on particular feeds or feeding systems.

This book contains information on a wide range of feeds and feeding methods. Just as there is no single ‘best’ sheep breed for meat production, there is no ultimate feed regime for sheep for growth.

The Arithmetic Of Arsenic, Cass R. Sunstein Sep 2001

The Arithmetic Of Arsenic, Cass R. Sunstein

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

What does cost-benefit mean, or do, in actual practice? When agencies are engaging in cost-benefit balancing, what are the interactions among law, science, and economics? This Article attempts to answer that question by exploring, in some detail, the controversy over EPA’s proposed regulation of arsenic in drinking water. The largest finding is that science often can produce only “benefit ranges,” and wide ones at that. With reasonable assumptions based on the existing science data, the proposed arsenic regulation can be projected to save as few as 0 lives and as many as 112. With reasonable assumptions, the monetized benefits of …

A Comparison Of Moss-Dwelling Invertebrates Along An Altitudinal Gradient, September 2001, Lauren Afsahi Sep 2001

A Comparison Of Moss-Dwelling Invertebrates Along An Altitudinal Gradient, September 2001, Lauren Afsahi

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Moss abundance and the invertebrates that inhabit moss differ with varying elevations. The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a significant difference in diversity and morphospecies composition of moss-dwelling invertebrates between three different elevations on the Pacific slope (1550 m, 1650 m, and 1750 m) along a tropical wet cloud forest. This study also examined if there was a significant difference between the diversity and morphospecies composition between the Atlantic and the Pacific slopes at an altitude of 1750 m. Eighty-one samples of one morphospecies of moss were collected from trees in a tropical wet cloud …

Book Review: Grazing Management, 2nd Ed., Lowell E. Moser

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Grazing management is critical in obtaining optimum production from grasslands and maintaining the grazing resource. Grazing management involves a complex relationship among the herbivores, vegetation, and other biotic and abiotic factors. Proper grazing management of grazing lands has a tremendous importance in agriculture and natural resource conservation because much of the earth’s surface is covered with grazable vegetation. This book is an updated second edition of Grazing Management, which was first published in 1990. This edition is increased in size and coverage compared with the first edition.. A lot of progress in grazing management has been made in the 11 …

Global Directions For Reforming Health Systems And Expanding Insurance. What Is Suitable For The Arab Gulf Countries?, Samir N. Banoob

Saudi Medical Journal

Most countries are exploring and implementing reforms of their health care systems. The Arab countries in the Gulf are no exception after establishing modern governmental health care systems accessible to all and free of charge. Current problems of the Arab systems include financial, managerial and quality issues. The private sector in these countries has no defined national role and is gowing abruptly and unplanned. The paper presents the major global health reform directions, analyzing the current activities in the Arab Gulf countries and proposing certain practical relevant approaches for health reform, and expansion of insurance in these activites.
