Treatment Of Choice Or A Last Resort? A Review Of Residential Mental Health Placements For Children And Adolescents, Karen Frensch, Gary Cameron, Gerald R. Adams

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

Residential treatment is often regarded as a treatment of ‘last resort’ and, increasingly, residential treatment programs are being asked to address the needs of very troubled children and adolescents. This paper is an effort to summarize what is currently known about the effects of residential treatment for children and adolescents. The review is organized into two sections: studies of the effectiveness of group home residential treatment and studies of the effectiveness of residential treatment delivered in residential treatment centres. In both areas, we attempt to identify trends within treatment, as well as patterns found in the literature that characterize post …

Relative Kinematics Of The Rib Cage And Abdomen During Speech And Nonspeech Behaviors Of 15-Month-Old Children, Christopher A. Moore, Tammy J. Caulfield, Jordan R. Green Feb 2001

Relative Kinematics Of The Rib Cage And Abdomen During Speech And Nonspeech Behaviors Of 15-Month-Old Children, Christopher A. Moore, Tammy J. Caulfield, Jordan R. Green

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Speech motor control emerges in the neurophysiologic context of widely distributed, powerful coordinative mechanisms, including those mediating respiratory function. It is unknown, however, whether developing children are able to exploit the capabilities of neural circuits controlling homeostasis for the production of speech and voice. Speech and rest breathing were investigated in eleven 15-month-old children using inductance plethysmography (Respitrace). Rib cage and abdominal kinematics were studied using a time-varying correlational index of thoracoabdominal coupling (i.e., reflecting the synchrony of movement of the rib cage and abdomen) as well as simple classification of the moment-to-moment kinematic relationship of these two functional components …

Edufaim: A Successful Program Helping Empower Rural Families Toward Self-Reliance, Stephen F. Duncan, Tim Dunnagan, Suzanne Christopher, Lynn Paul

Journal of Extension

In this article we briefly describe the development, implementation, and preliminary evaluation of EDUFAIM: Educating Families to Achieve Independence in Montana as a model for statewide integration of efforts to help families dependent on public assistance move toward a more self-supporting lifestyle. The project is deemed by collaborators an integral part of their efforts to help families achieve self-sufficiency, and it has been dubbed a "model of collaboration." It is hoped that this model will be helpful to other states engaged in self-reliance education.

Teenagers As Teachers Programs: Ten Essential Elements, Faye Ch Lee, Shelley Murdock

Journal of Extension

Teenagers teaching younger children can be beneficial to both the children whom they teach and the teens themselves. This qualitative study identified current practices in 14 teens as teachers programs that contribute to positive outcomes for teenaged teachers and the children. Using in-depth individual and group interviews, this study found that complex planning and skilled implementation are requisite in programs with positive outcomes. A dedicated adult who supported teens was found to be the most critical element in successful programs. Other essential elements included active recruitment strategies and a strong curriculum.

Effect Of Nutrition Education By Paraprofessionals On Dietary Intake, Maternal Weight Gain, And Infant Birth Weight In Pregnant Native American And Caucasian Adolescents, Janice Hermann, Glenna Williams, Donna Hunt

Journal of Extension

Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program, in cooperation with the Chickasaw Nation and Choctaw Nation WIC programs, implemented and evaluated a nutrition education program for pregnant adolescents. Program evaluation investigated the effects of nutrition education by paraprofessionals on dietary intake, maternal weight gain, and infant birth weight in pregnant Native American and Caucasian adolescents. Nutrition education by paraprofessionals was effective in improving adolescents' dietary intake, maternal weight gain, and infant birth weight. The decreased rate of low birth weight infants among participants represents a saving of $297,500 in medical costs during the first year of life.

Planning For A Peaceful Korea, Henry D. Sokolski Mr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

With the change of administrations in Washington, current U.S. policy toward North Korea will naturally undergo review and scrutiny. The essays in this volume offer an option to the current engagement approach. The authors suggest an alternative strategy for promoting peace and security in the Korean peninsula different from the ones contemplated or implemented by Washington in recent years.

Predicting Forage Quality In Switchgrass And Big Bluestem, Rob Mitchell, John Fritz, Ken Moore, Lowell E. Moser, Ken Vogel, Daren D. Redfearn, David Wester

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Predicting forage quality would help producers scheduled hay harvesting to obtain desired hay quality. Our objective was to determine if growing degree day (GDD), day of the year (DOY), mean stage count (MSC), and mean stage weight (MSW) could be used to predict in vitro digestible dry matter (IVDDM), crude protein (CP), and neutral-detergent fiber (NDF) of ‘Trailblazer’ switchgrass (Panicum virgatum.) and ‘Pawnee’ big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii Vitman) grown in Nebraska and Kansas. This field study was conducted from 1990 to 1993 at Mead, NE on Typic Argiudoll soils and from 1992 to 1993 at Manhattan, KS …

Living In A House Of Cards: Family Experiences With Long-Term Childhood Technology Dependence, Maureen O'Brien Feb 2001

Living In A House Of Cards: Family Experiences With Long-Term Childhood Technology Dependence, Maureen O'Brien

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Families' experiences of providing long-term home care for the child who is technology dependent were explored via parental interviews. Families identified frequent change, uncertainty, and unpredictability in their lives, a phenomenon described as "living in a house of cards." Attempts to increase stability involved the use of vigilance, advocacy, and reframing. Areas of challenge, change, and growth included making sense of life, managing daily life with technology, and maintaining a functioning family. Increased understanding of family experiences with long-term childhood technology dependence can provide nurses with additional strategies for providing optimal care to this population.

Localization Of Endothelial Cells And Their Precursors In The Embryonic Chick Heart During Coronary Vasculogenesis Utilizing An Mrna Specific Probe., Michelle Lynn Slover

Theses and Dissertations

The definitive origin(s) of endothelial cell precursors involved in establishing the endothelial lining of intramural coronary vasculature within the subepicardial space of the embryonic chick heart have not been fully characterized. This vasculogenic process is suggested to derive from reciprocal tissue interactions between the myocardium, dorsal mesocardium, and continuous epicardium. These developmental processes occur in chick embryos, staged 16–25 (2 to 4.5–5 days). In the current study, presumptive endothelial precursor cells have been located amongst the surface epithelial cells of the dorsal mesocardium and villi of the proepicardial organ, both of which contribute to the epicardial epithelium. Endothelial precursor cells …

The Role Of Dietary Fiber In Dung Size Of Bushy-Tailed Woodrats, Neotoma Cinerea: Its Potential Application To Paleoclimatic Interpretation, Jennifer C. Hallett, Peter E. Wigand Jan 2001

The Role Of Dietary Fiber In Dung Size Of Bushy-Tailed Woodrats, Neotoma Cinerea: Its Potential Application To Paleoclimatic Interpretation, Jennifer C. Hallett, Peter E. Wigand

Western North American Naturalist

A laboratory study was conducted to examine causes underlying variation in woodrat dung size. Eight bushy-tailed woodrats, Neotoma cinerea, were captured and sequentially fed 2 diets of 46% and 63% neutral detergent fiber (NDF). Dung pellets were collected for 2 days following 7 days of acclimation to each diet. Length and width of oven-dried pellets ranged, respectively, from 8.3 to 10.2 mm and 3.2 to 4.9 mm for diet 1, and 8.9 to 12.4 mm and 3.6 to 4.7 mm for diet 2. Body weight ranged from 232.0 to 504.5 g and did not significantly affect dung size. A …

Nitrogen Acquisition From Different Spatial Distributions By Six Great Basin Plant Species, Sara E. Duke, Martyn M. Caldwell Jan 2001

Nitrogen Acquisition From Different Spatial Distributions By Six Great Basin Plant Species, Sara E. Duke, Martyn M. Caldwell

Western North American Naturalist

Plants of different growth form may utilize soil nutrients in various spatial distributions through different scales of foraging. In this study we evaluated the ability of 6 species commonly found in the Great Basin to utilize nitrogen (N) distributed in different patterns. Three growth forms were represented by these 6 species.

We applied 15N-labeled nitrogen in concentrated patches and over broader uniform areas (at approximately 1% the concentration of the patches) in large, outdoor sand-culture plots. Six weeks after N was applied, 2 plants adjacent to the patch (Patch Treatment) and 2 plants within the uniform application (Uniform Treatment) …

Survival And Development Of Phoradendron Californicum And Acacia Greggii During A Drought, Simon A. Lei Jan 2001

Survival And Development Of Phoradendron Californicum And Acacia Greggii During A Drought, Simon A. Lei

Western North American Naturalist

Survival and development of parasitic and autoparasitic Phoradendron californicum (desert mistletoe) and their Acacia greggii (catclaw) hosts were quantitatively investigated during the 1997 drought in southern Nevada. Phoradendron californicum was parasitic on other individuals of the same species (autoparasitic), and these in turn were parasitic on A. greggii hosts. An extensive drought from February 1995 to mid-July 1997 was characterized by extremely low seasonal rainfall and high summer air temperatures. Extensively mistletoe-infested hosts had significantly less canopy volume and produced significantly fewer leaves, flowers, and fruits than uninfested (control) or lightly infested hosts. Mistletoe plants on A. greggii hosts with …
