Relationship Between Breast-Feeding Duration And Acute Respiratory Infections In Infants, Ismail Abdulmoneim, Saleh A. Al-Ghamdi
Relationship Between Breast-Feeding Duration And Acute Respiratory Infections In Infants, Ismail Abdulmoneim, Saleh A. Al-Ghamdi
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: To study the relationship of breast-feeding duration on the frequency of respiratory tract infections in infants during the first 2 years of life. METHODS: A retrospective study where the files of infants randomly selected from Shamasan Primary Health Care Center were analyzed for different related factors and frequencies of respiratory infections. RESULTS: The mean duration of lactation was shorter than in previous national reports (5.1±3.4months). The frequencies of respiratory infections were high in the first 2 years reaching an average of 9.2±4.1 attacks per infant. The lower respiratory tract suffered more frequent attacks than the upper averaging a rate …
Impacts Of Supplemental Feeding On The Nutritional Ecology Of Black Bears, Steven T. Partridge, Dale L. Nolte, Georg J. Ziegltrum, Charles T. Robbins
Impacts Of Supplemental Feeding On The Nutritional Ecology Of Black Bears, Steven T. Partridge, Dale L. Nolte, Georg J. Ziegltrum, Charles T. Robbins
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Black bear (Ursus americanus) damage to managed conifer stands during the spring in the U.S. Pacific Northwest is a continuing management concern. Because bear damage to managed conifers may reflect the limited availability of nutritious foods, supplemental feeding has been used to decrease damage. Highly palatable, pelleted feed is provided ad libitum from April until late June when berries ripen and such damage stops. We examined black bear use of supplemental feed during the spring and summer of 1998 and 1999 in western Washington. Bears were captured in areas where supplemental feed was provided and in control areas …
A Histological Approach To Taphonomy: The Freeze-Thaw Cycle And Water Immersion, William A. Souchick
A Histological Approach To Taphonomy: The Freeze-Thaw Cycle And Water Immersion, William A. Souchick
Masters Theses
Previous taphonomic studies have failed to fully study how freeze-thaw cycles, fresh water immersion and salt water immersion affect bone microstructure. Knowledge of how these environs modify bone can help narrow post mortem interval estimations or allow medico legal investigators to differentiate between perimortem damage and damage caused by the surroundings. To date, previous studies of water immersion and freeze-thaw cycles have failed either to relate their findings to forensic taphonomy or to address how bone microstructure was modified. This study was conducted to determine how bone was modified by freeze-thaw cycles and water immersion and to apply the findings …
Respecting Deference: Conceptualizing Skidmore Within The Architecture Of Chevron, Jim Rossi
Respecting Deference: Conceptualizing Skidmore Within The Architecture Of Chevron, Jim Rossi
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
This Article addresses critically the implications of the U.S. Supreme Court's recent decision in Christensen v. Harris County, 120 S.Ct. 1655 (2000), for standards of judicial review of agency interpretations of law. Christensen is a notable case in the administrative law area because it purports to clarify application of the deference doctrine first articulated in Skidmore v. Swift & Co., 323 U.S. 134 (1944). By reviving this doctrine, the case narrows application of the predominant approach to deference articulated in Chevron, U.S.A., Inc. v. Natural Resources Defense Council, Inc., 467 U.S. 837 (1984), thus reducing the level of deference in …

Consumer Views On Genetically Modified Crops, Levente Timar
Consumer Views On Genetically Modified Crops, Levente Timar
Major Themes in Economics
Differences in consumer views about genetically modified crops have recently lead to trade disputes between the United States and the countries of the European Union. This paper uses a simple cost-benefit model to examine what factors influence consumer views on modified crops, and analyses them in an attempt to explain the observed difference between the American and European perspectives. Potential socio-economic, health and environmental effects interact with personal beliefs to shape consumer views. It is argued that most of the difference in opinions can be traced back to the lack of accurate information. There is a difference in the perceived …

Income Distribution And Health: A Worldwide Analysis, Ketan Amin '01
The Park Place Economist
Despite having had nearly a decade of economic growth, the United States is among many developed countries that lag behind under developed countries on various health indicators such as life expectancy. Although access to universal health care is also a major contributor to the level of health of a nation, growing evidence suggests that broader economic forces may be playing a larger role in determining a nation’s health status.
The Study Of Periodicity Of Eating And Public Health Nutrition Issues, Karen E. Harrington
The Study Of Periodicity Of Eating And Public Health Nutrition Issues, Karen E. Harrington
Doctoral
This thesis set out to provide an objective understanding of periodicity of eating in a group of free living adults, by determining the temporal pattern of nutrient intake during eating occasions throughout the day. A dietary assessment study was carried out using a 7-day estimated food diary in a sample of 133 adults recruited from a city local authority. During the survey period, respondents were met on at least three occasions to encourage and motivate them to follow their usual dietary habits and to record their intakes in a as detailed a manner as possible. A combination of quantification methods …
Understanding Cancer Risk Among Extension Professionals: A Program Development Perspective, Serena Howard Dresbach
Understanding Cancer Risk Among Extension Professionals: A Program Development Perspective, Serena Howard Dresbach
Journal of Extension
The study reported here was predicated on the belief that it is necessary to assess the knowledge level of cancer risk among Extension professionals before programming can be developed as part of the overall educational mission. Extension professionals significantly increased their knowledge level of cancer risk through a pre-test assessment, application of a non-invasive educational intervention, and a post-test follow-up among a random sample of Ohio State University Extension personnel. In the areas of emerging research related to cancer risk, Extension professionals significantly increased their correct response percentage with the intervention. To fully incorporate cancer risk information into Extension education …
Recommended Energy Studies In The Food Processing And Packaging Industry: Identifying Opportunities For Conservation And Efficiency, Felix Barron, Joel Burcham
Recommended Energy Studies In The Food Processing And Packaging Industry: Identifying Opportunities For Conservation And Efficiency, Felix Barron, Joel Burcham
Journal of Extension
The food processing industry provides about 60% of the foods consumed by U.S. households. The energy used to process these foods is a significant part of the total price. Energy conservation and efficiency studies are necessary, because these measures are not generally applied in a systematic manner by small food processors. Extension professionals, consultants, and small food processors should work together to study the use of energy in processing plants and to identify factors affecting process efficiency. These studies will result in the development of applicable educational materials, training workshops and ultimately cost savings.
