In Vivo Titration Of Mitomycin C Action By The Presence Of Four Escherichia Coli Genomic Regions On Multicopy Plasmid, Y. Wei, Amy Cheng Vollmer, R. A. Larossa

Biology Faculty Works

Mitomycin C (MMC), a DNA-damaging agent, is a potent inducer of the bacterial SOS response; surprisingly, it has not been used to select resistant mutants from wild-type Escherichia coli. MMC resistance is caused by the presence of any of four distinct E. coli genes (mdfA, gyrl, rob, and sdiA) on high-copy-number vectors. mdfA encodes a membrane efflux pump whose overexpression results in broad-spectrum chemical resistance. The gyrI (also called sbmC) gene product inhibits DNA gyrase activity in vitro, while the rob protein appears to function in transcriptional activation of efflux pumps. SdiA is a transcriptional activator of ftsQAZ genes involved …

Raced Histories, Mother Friendships, And The Power Of Care: Conversations With Women In Project Head Start, Lucie E. White Apr 2001

Raced Histories, Mother Friendships, And The Power Of Care: Conversations With Women In Project Head Start, Lucie E. White

Chicago-Kent Law Review

This Article seeks to disrupt the polarized debate about care that is taking shape among feminist scholars. Drawing from ethnographic interviews with low-income wo- men in a South Central Los Angeles Head Start program, White sets forth a conception of care that is grounded in historical practices within African American communities for confronting race and gender violence, affirming each person's dignity and potential, and promoting social justice.

The Second Coming Of Care, Kathryn Abrams Apr 2001

The Second Coming Of Care, Kathryn Abrams

Chicago-Kent Law Review

In this Commentary on White's article, Abrams examines the differences between two incarnations of the feminist conversation about care: an early version, that viewed care as a characteristic of, or emanation from, women; and a more contemporary version, that focuses on caregiving as an often undervalued social practice, central to the lives of many women but also performed by others. Abrams examines the ways in which White's article forms a bridge between these two moments, and also offers a new conception of law's relation to caregiving and other feminist goals: a view of law as enabling, rather than producing …

Managing Bison To Restore Biodiversity, Joe C. Truett, Michael Phillips, Kyran Kunkel, Russell Miller Apr 2001

Managing Bison To Restore Biodiversity, Joe C. Truett, Michael Phillips, Kyran Kunkel, Russell Miller

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Prior to their demise in the late 1800s, bison coexisted with and helped sustain a diverse and spectacular assemblage of animals and plant communities on the Great Plains. Bison, in concert with fire, exerted strong control on the structure of the vegetation by grazing, trampling, and wallowing. The changes in the vegetation induced changes in many animal populations. These impacts, coupled with the bison's role as the major converter of grass to meat, so greatly affected other species that some have called bison a "keystone" species in the Great Plains ecosystem. The black-tailed prairie dog, dependent on bison grazing over …

Nutrient Composition Of Grass- And Grain-Finished Bison, Martin Marchello Apr 2001

Nutrient Composition Of Grass- And Grain-Finished Bison, Martin Marchello

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The North American buffalo (Bison bison) has survived near extinction to become a commodity (meat, hides, and hair) in a consumer-driven market. Since this is a growth industry, primarily young bulls are slaughtered for meat, while most females are used to build the herd. Bison meat is highly palatable, and previous research showed that grain-finished bison meat is low in fat and high in protein. However, bison may be grain- or grass-finished. In this study we found few differences in nutrient content of the meat between grain- or grass-finished bison. Grass-finished animals had a little more moisture (75.9 …

"The Last Buffalo Hunt" And Beyond Plains Sioux Economic Strategies In The Early Reservation Period, Jeffrey Ostler Apr 2001

"The Last Buffalo Hunt" And Beyond Plains Sioux Economic Strategies In The Early Reservation Period, Jeffrey Ostler

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Sometime in late May 1882, several thousand bison appeared on the Great Sioux reservation about 100 miles west of the Standing Rock Indian agency (see Fig. O. According to James McLaughlin, the Standing Rock agent, the Indians knew "instinctively" that the buffalo had arrived, even though "it had been many years since the buffalo had sought the hunting-grounds of that part of the reservation." With this "rich store of succulent meat in sight," McLaughlin continued, "it was not possible that the Indians could be held in check." On 10 June, over 600 Standing Rock Lakota and Yanktonais left the agency. …

What The Past Can Provide: Contribution Of Prehistoric Bison Studies To Modern Bison Management, Kenneth Cannon Apr 2001

What The Past Can Provide: Contribution Of Prehistoric Bison Studies To Modern Bison Management, Kenneth Cannon

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

For over 100 years, bison in the Greater Yellowstone Area have been managed intensely. Even during the years of "natural regulation," bison herds have been heavily managed by culling. One of the fundamental goals of the plan for the Greater Yellowstone Area is to maintain the ecosystem's integrity using sound science. In order to reach this goal, it must be recognized that it is a dynamic system, continually undergoing change. However, our knowledge of such changes is extremely limited. In the case of bison, our knowledge is based on nonsystematically collected historic records and modern studies of small, isolated populations. …

Aluminium Toxicokinetics: An Updated Minireview, Robert A. Yokel, Patrick J. Mcnamara Apr 2001

Aluminium Toxicokinetics: An Updated Minireview, Robert A. Yokel, Patrick J. Mcnamara

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

This MiniReview updates and expands the MiniReview of aluminium toxicokinetics by Wilhelm et al. published by this journal in 1990. The use of 26Al, analyzed by accelerator mass spectrometry, now enables determination of Al toxicokinetics under physiological conditions. There is concern about aluminium in drinking water. The common sources of aluminium for man are reviewed. Oral Al bioavailability from water appears to be about 0.3%. Food is the primary common source. Al bioavailability from food has not been adequately determined. Industrial and medicinal exposure, and perhaps antiperspirant use, can significantly increase absorbed aluminium. Inhalation bioavailability of airborne soluble Al …

A Review Of The Benefits Of Flax Supplementation, Samuel P. Held Apr 2001

A Review Of The Benefits Of Flax Supplementation, Samuel P. Held

Theses and Dissertations

We have become a society of convenience. Healthy foods that were staples for thousands of years have become replaced by processed foods with long shelf lives. This has been done to the detriment of our nutrition and health. Flax is one such replaced food item. A staple food for hundreds of generations, flax had become scarce in our diet until recent interest spurred by research found flax to be one of the best sourc es on earth for alpha-linolenic acid an Omega- three fatty acid, plant lignans, and contains a large amount of dietary fiber. Potentially these constituents can have …
