Finding Grandpa's Patent: Using Patent Information For Historical Or Genealogical Research, Jan Comfort Jan 2001

Finding Grandpa's Patent: Using Patent Information For Historical Or Genealogical Research, Jan Comfort

Publications

Hardly a week goes by without a phone call, an e-mail message, or a visit from a patron who is looking for a patent issued to a family member. Often, the patron does not have complete information, and sometimes has nothing more than a name and a notion that Grandpa once invented something. This article describes some strategies that can be used by Librarians to assist patrons in historical patent research. It, additionally, includes a list of sources and highlights special materials that are available at Patent and Trademark Depository Libraries.

Invasion Of Mouse Fibroblasts And Macrophages By Human Isolates Of Agrobacterium, Karmon Leigh Kriechbaum Jan 2001

Invasion Of Mouse Fibroblasts And Macrophages By Human Isolates Of Agrobacterium, Karmon Leigh Kriechbaum

Honors Theses

In the past few decades there has been growing evidence that species of Agrobacterium can be opportunistic animal pathogens. One of these species is Agrobacterium tumefaciens, which for years has been studied as a plant pathogen. The results of one published experiment suggested that an Agrobacterium toxin could kill mice (12). Other strong evidence for Agrobacterium as an opportunistic human pathogen is the over fifty published clinical cases in which humans were infected by Agrobacterium species (3, 13-25). In almost all of these cases the patient was immunocompromised in some way and they often had an invasive procedure such as …

Cardiovascular Genetics: Case Studies, Kenneth G. Zahka Jan 2001

Cardiovascular Genetics: Case Studies, Kenneth G. Zahka

Journal of Law and Health

What I'd like to do in the next 10 or 15 minutes is use a case approach which we all use in medicine as you use in law to give you a flavor for how we as clinicians think about things that are oftentimes obviously genetic. But I want to stress to you that probably a day does not go by or a patient does not go by where I don't think in terms of genetic issues for their cardiovascular health.

Application Of Administrative Law To Health Care Reform: The Real Politik Of Crossing The Quality Chasm , Thomas R. Mclean Jan 2001

Application Of Administrative Law To Health Care Reform: The Real Politik Of Crossing The Quality Chasm , Thomas R. Mclean

Journal of Law and Health

Real Politik, a term in vogue at the height of the Cold War, contemplates that in practice, governmental bodies attempt to expand their spheres of influence and control by the application of economic leverage. The federal government is clearly interested in expanding its influence into health care because of its cost. Americans spend over one trillion dollars - forty-four percent of which is paid for by the federal government - on health care each year. To control the cost of health care, governmental reformers proposed the Health Securities Act of 1993 as a frontal assault on the American health care …

Misperception And Misapplication Of The First Amendment In The American Pluralistic System: Mergers Between Catholic And Non-Catholic Healthcare Systems, Jason M. Kellhofer Jan 2001

Misperception And Misapplication Of The First Amendment In The American Pluralistic System: Mergers Between Catholic And Non-Catholic Healthcare Systems, Jason M. Kellhofer

Journal of Law and Health

This note questions the wisdom of those who content that Catholic health providers, to constitutionally qualify for government assistance or be permitted to merge with public entities, must be stripped of that which makes them most effective - their religious identity. The threat to sectarian healthcare has steadily been on the rise as can be seen in actions such as the American Public Health Association's recent approval of a policy statement recommending more government oversight to preclude the dropping of reproductive services when Catholic and Non-Catholic hospitals merge. Section II explores why these mergers occur and why certain services are …

A Moment Of Transcendence: Encountering Each Other In And Beyond The Fiction Of Raymond Carver, Amy Lynn Leo Jan 2001

A Moment Of Transcendence: Encountering Each Other In And Beyond The Fiction Of Raymond Carver, Amy Lynn Leo

Honors Papers

This is an essay about reading Raymond Carver. It deals mostly with his work in general rather than with what individual stories mean or exemplify. My aim is to describe and understand the experience of Carver that I had upon my first reading. I will show how reading Raymond Carver can be a spiritual experience, and, in fact, was for me. The reading experience becomes spiritual when readers exchange meaning with the characters through identification and by doing so consider themselves in such a way that they fully embrace the patterns of their lives and manage to transcend them. Because …

The Persistence Of Romanticism: Essays In Philosophy And Literature, Richard Thomas Eldridge Jan 2001

The Persistence Of Romanticism: Essays In Philosophy And Literature, Richard Thomas Eldridge

Philosophy Faculty Works

Has Romanticism been superseded by realism, modernism, and postmodernism, all of which are often taken to acknowledge reality more fully than Romanticism? What is it that Romantic thinkers and writers do? Why does what they do matter? Is Romanticism a think of the past? "These challenging essays defend Romanticism against its critics. They argue that Romantic thought, interpreted as the ongoing pursuit of freedom in concrete contexts, crossed by frustration and marked by desire, remains a central and exemplary form of both artistic work and philosophical understanding. Marshaling a wide range of texts from literature, philosophy, and criticism, Richard Eldridge …

Job Reference Immunity Statutes: Prevalent But Irrelevant, Markita D. Cooper Jan 2001

Job Reference Immunity Statutes: Prevalent But Irrelevant, Markita D. Cooper

Journal Publications

This Article posits that current reference immunity statutes are of little use in encouraging employers to provide references. Although legislation ostensibly protects employers in most states, "name, rank and serial number," "no-comment," and neutral reference policies continue to prevail as standard practice regarding job references. Generally, the existing statutes leave the common law in place, so that reference claims may be adjudicated under statutory standards and common law standards. This Article proposes that the field would be clarified if the statutes were the exclusive law governing liability for job reference claims under state law.

Did The Fifteenth Amendment Apply In Bush V. Gore, Alfred Dennis Mathewson Jan 2001

Did The Fifteenth Amendment Apply In Bush V. Gore, Alfred Dennis Mathewson

Faculty Scholarship

The story comes to mind now because the Supreme Court rendered its decision in Bush v. Gore1 without any reference to the Fifteenth Amendment in the opinion or any mention of it by any Justice or lawyer in the oral argument. The Amendment provides that "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color or previous condition of servitude." If I had been a Justice I would have asked the lawyers whether the Fifteenth Amendment was at all relevant to …

Technology Assisted Life Stories, Gary R. Harlow Jan 2001

Technology Assisted Life Stories, Gary R. Harlow

Open Access Master's Theses

A pilot project was undertaken to test an emerging technology with a view to examine the feasibility of assisting older participants in the telling of their life stories. With the use of a digital recorder and voice-to text software, ten older persons were freed from the labor of creating a formal record of their life stories, either through typing ,writing, or manual transcription of audio tape. Extemporaneously, on a hand-held recorder, and in a one-on-one interview format, each participant's voice was converted to digital form as the narration proceeded. This digital recording was then transcribed electronically into a computer, which …

The East Greenwich Greenway Plan: A Strategy For The Commons, Greg S. Harris Jan 2001

The East Greenwich Greenway Plan: A Strategy For The Commons, Greg S. Harris

Open Access Master's Theses

This Greenway Plan has been prepared in response to increasing development pressure and a heightened local awareness of the need to conserve East Greenwich's open spaces, protect natural resources and water supplies, increase opportunities for passive outdoor recreation, and protect the town's historic rural and scenic characteristics. Changes are recommended to the Zoning Ordinance and the Development and Subdivision Review Regulations that will enhance the town's ability to preserve open space, including farms and ecologically significant corridors, and to incorporate interconnected trail networks between new subdivisions. Rapid changes to the town's character caused by residential growth have led to escalating …

Middle-Ear Function With Tympanic-Membrane Perforations. I. Measurements And Mechanisms, Susan E. Voss, John J. Rosowski, Saumil N. Merchant, William T. Peake Jan 2001

Middle-Ear Function With Tympanic-Membrane Perforations. I. Measurements And Mechanisms, Susan E. Voss, John J. Rosowski, Saumil N. Merchant, William T. Peake

Engineering: Faculty Publications

Sound transmission through ears with tympanic-membrane ~TM! perforations is not well understood. Here, measurements on human-cadaver ears are reported that describe sound transmission through the middle ear with experimentally produced perforations, which range from 0.5 to 5.0 mm in diameter. Three response variables were measured with acoustic stimulation at the TM: stapes velocity, middle-ear cavity sound pressure, and acoustic impedance at the TM. The stapes-velocity measurements show that perforations cause frequency-dependent losses; at low frequencies losses are largest and increase as perforation size increases. Measurements of middle-ear cavity pressure coupled with the stapes-velocity measurements indicate that the dominant mechanism for …

Model Based Effective Cell Volume Calculation In Ultrasound Tissue Characterization, Di Lai Jan 2001

Model Based Effective Cell Volume Calculation In Ultrasound Tissue Characterization, Di Lai

Theses

In reflective ultrasonic imaging, some statistical parameters can be extracted from the backscattered RF signal. Applying Rayleigh statistics or non-Rayleigh statistics to these parameters, the underlying tissue parameters such as effective scatterer number density that characterize the tissues can be further estimated. However, if the statistical processing is applied to the time domain signal, narrow band excitation pulse needs to be used when we consider the frequency dependency of the backscattered signal. The scattering resolution volume is also difficult to estimate. Chen, et al proposed a different method to determine the frequency-dependent effective scatterer number density, which is the actual …

Does Community Notification For Sex Offenders Violate The Eighth Amendment's Prohibition Against Cruel And Unusual Punishment - A Focus On Vigilantism Resulting From Megan's Law., Alex B. Eyssen Jan 2001

Does Community Notification For Sex Offenders Violate The Eighth Amendment's Prohibition Against Cruel And Unusual Punishment - A Focus On Vigilantism Resulting From Megan's Law., Alex B. Eyssen

St. Mary's Law Journal

Community notification of a sex offender’s presence may be violating the Eighth Amendment’s protection from Cruel and Unusual Punishment. Under Megan’s Law and other sex offender registration statutes, individuals that have completed a prison sentence for a sex crime may have to register as a sex offender. The information of the individual including his name, address, physical description, date of birth, social security number, employer, offense, and picture, is publicly disseminated. As an unintended consequence, individuals who have served their time may have to suffer additional punishment in the form of harassment, vigilantism, and violence.
