Increasing Basic Writers' Thinking About And Understanding Of Literacy Through Literacy-Based Service-Learning, Suzanne Dena Gates Jan 2001

Increasing Basic Writers' Thinking About And Understanding Of Literacy Through Literacy-Based Service-Learning, Suzanne Dena Gates

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

This project aligned a community college basic writing class with student-performed community service that was specifically literacy-based. The sample consisted of two writing classes, with data collected through an eighteen-week semester. The study was conducted according to qualitative methods and thus allowed for a close look at students' thinking about and understanding of literacy, and how changes in students' thinking about literacy reflected in their class experiences. One basic writing class was designated the service-Iearning class; the other basic writing class was designated the comparison class. Both classes shared the same instructor, texts, in-class activities and writing prompts. The service-learning …

Faces Of The Holocaust: A Curriculum Guide For Teachers, Challon Roberts, Thomas S. Martin

Dayton Holocaust Resource Center Publications

"Faces ofthe Holocaust" is a unique series of fifteen videotapes created expressly as a classroom resource and curriculum supplement. I began to record these one-of-a-kind stories in 1985 with Wright State University Television Center Initially, there were nine interviews over a three year period, which included painstaking editing. The second part of the series was filmed in 1995, the fiftieth year of liberation, with interviews of five more liberators and one more survivor. The series was directed by K. Roland Knight of Wright State University Television Center. Dr. Thomas Martin and Challon Roberts assisted me in the editing process.

Regulation Of Religious Proselytism In The United States, Howard O. Hunter, Polly J. Price Jan 2001

Regulation Of Religious Proselytism In The United States, Howard O. Hunter, Polly J. Price

Faculty Articles

This article will consider various aspects of the U.S. legal system that affect proselytism. Although the United States has had a longstanding constitutional guarantee of the “free exercise” of religion, there are nonetheless significant constraints upon free exercise directly relating to proselytism. Some legal commentators, including Douglas Laycock, have argued that our decentralized system of government leads to insufficient protection of religious liberty, especially for religious minorities. Most case law on the subject in the United States, as well as most attempts to regulate behavior by ordinance or statute, have developed in response to groups or individuals that are outside the …

Identity Crisis: "Intersectionality," "Multidimensionality," And The Development Of An Adequate Theory Of Subordination, Darren L. Hutchinson Jan 2001

Identity Crisis: "Intersectionality," "Multidimensionality," And The Development Of An Adequate Theory Of Subordination, Darren L. Hutchinson

Faculty Articles

This Article arises out of the intersectionality and post-intersectionality literature and makes a case against the essentialist considerations that informed HRC's endorsement of D'Amato. Part I discusses the pitfalls that occur when scholars and activists engage in essentialist politics and treat identities and forms of subordination as conflicting forces. Part II examines how essentialism negatively affects legal theory in the equality context. Part III considers the historical motivation for and the efficacy of the "intersectionality" response to the problem of essentialism. Part III also extensively analyzes the "multidimensional" critiques of essentialism offered by the most recent school of thought in …

Public Executions In America Should Death Row Inmates Be Able To Choose Between Private And Public Death, Nicholas Compton Jan 2001

Public Executions In America Should Death Row Inmates Be Able To Choose Between Private And Public Death, Nicholas Compton

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

On June 13, 1997, Timothy McVeigh was sentenced to death for the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City on April 19,1995. The bombing resulted in the deaths of 168 people and the wounding of over 500 more. McVeigh successfully petitioned U.S. District Court Judge Richard Matsch to put an end to his appeals and expedite his execution. At midnight on February 16, 2001 McVeigh let pass his deadline to petition President George W. Bush for clemency. He is scheduled to die by lethal injection on May 16, 2001 at the federal penitentiary in Terre Haute, …

Will A Lawsuit A Day Keep The Cyberdocs Away? Modern Theories Of Medical Malpractice As Applied To Cybermedicine, Ruth Ellen Smalley Jan 2001

Will A Lawsuit A Day Keep The Cyberdocs Away? Modern Theories Of Medical Malpractice As Applied To Cybermedicine, Ruth Ellen Smalley

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Rivaled only by lawyers, those who earn their livelihood by practicing medicine are viewed by many as America's Public Enemy No. 1. This perception is due to the rising cost of medicine, the over-scheduling of patients, and the poor bedside manner that many people associate with a trip to the doctor's office. However, the advent of the Internet and its proliferation into schools, offices, and homes has placed medical opinions only a mouse click away. Websites, such as cyberdocs.com, allow patients to type in a description of their ailments and receive diagnoses and treatment advice from an on-line medical professional …

United States V. Hubbell: Encryption And The Discovery Of Documents, Greg Sergienko Jan 2001

United States V. Hubbell: Encryption And The Discovery Of Documents, Greg Sergienko

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Five years ago, in a contribution to these pages, I suggested that the Supreme Court's oldest precedents and the original intent of the framers of the Constitution precluded the use of evidence produced under a grant of immunity against the producer, even though the material produced included documents that the producer had not been compelled to write. This implied that information concealed with a cryptographic key could not be used in a criminal prosecution against someone from whom the key had been obtained under a grant of immunity.

An Overview Of The Virginia Ucita, Carlyle C. Ring Jr. Jan 2001

An Overview Of The Virginia Ucita, Carlyle C. Ring Jr.

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Virginia has taken a strong and important leadership in establishing rules for the Information Highway through the Joint Committee on Technology and Science (JCOTS) and Delegate Joe T. May. Without the Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act (UCITA) no established rules exist in common law for the Information Highway, which means that each judge must create the rules in each case as it arises. Every judge will make his own rules for the particular case. This results in great inconsistency and uncertainty adversely affecting the realization of the full potential of the Information Age economy. Governor Gilmore states: In 2000, Virginia …

Remarks On The Background And Development Of Ucita, Joe T. May

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

I'm Delegate Joe May, and I represent the 33rd House of Delegates District which is far Northern Virginia. I should tell you before we start I'm not an attorney by profession. I'm an electrical engineer with grease under the fingernails to prove it. In fact, I own an electronic manufacturing and engineering firm. And to paraphrase Polonius, I am neither a borrower nor lender of software. I do purchase some, we do sell some. So hopefully my perspective is a little more balanced than it might first appear. I'm going to talk today about the chronology of events that led …

Is The Whole Greater Than The Sum Of Its Parts? The Applicability Of The Fair Use Doctrine To The New Breed Of Instant Messaging Software, Haydn J. Richards Jr. Jan 2001

Is The Whole Greater Than The Sum Of Its Parts? The Applicability Of The Fair Use Doctrine To The New Breed Of Instant Messaging Software, Haydn J. Richards Jr.

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Imagine: you are preparing your fifteen-year high school reunion. When you were in high school, two rival bands played at dances. Everyone at school knew the bands and most students enjoyed the music. Like most music groups, neither band obtained a recording contract with a record label. You are not aware that during a garage practice session, the bands' members recorded some of their songs. Of these songs, only a few scratchy recordings remain. You decide that you are going to search the Internet to see whether you can find any copies of the songs that would enthuse and delight …

Play Patterns And Gender, Carolyn P. Edwards, Lisa Knoche, Asiye Kumru Jan 2001

Play Patterns And Gender, Carolyn P. Edwards, Lisa Knoche, Asiye Kumru

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This cross-cultural analysis examines the gendered patterns of play seen in children worldwide. Play is a culturally universal activity through which children explore themselves and their environment, test out and practice different social roles, and learn to interact with other children and adults. Early in life, children identify themselves as a “girl” or a “boy,” and this basic self-categorization lays a foundation for their developing beliefs about with whom, what, how, and where they will play. Children play an active role in their own and their peers’ “gender socialization” (the process by which they come to acquire the knowledge, values, …

Casaubon's Ghosts: The Haunting Of Legal Scholarship, Allan C. Hutchinson Jan 2001

Casaubon's Ghosts: The Haunting Of Legal Scholarship, Allan C. Hutchinson

Articles & Book Chapters

Much academic work continues to operate within the cramping and pervasive spirit of a black-letter mentality that encourages scholars and jurists to maintain legal study as an inward-looking and self-contained discipline. There is still a marked tendency to treat law as somehow a world of its own that is separate from the society within which it operates and purports to serve. This is a disheartening and disabling state of affairs. Accordingly, this article will offer both a critique of the present situation and suggest an alternative way of proceeding. The writer recommends a shift from philosophy to democracy so that …

The Supreme Court Of Canada In The 21st Century, Patrick J. Monahan Jan 2001

The Supreme Court Of Canada In The 21st Century, Patrick J. Monahan

Articles & Book Chapters

This paper reviews the evolution in the role and fonctions of the Supreme Court of Canada over the past 25 years, and attempts to identify certain major challenges facing the institution in the decades ahead. In the past 25 years, the Supreme Court has moved from a traditional appellate tribunal to a body exercising a broader supervisory function in the interpretation and the application of Canadian law. Professor Monahan describes the nature of this evolution, and compares certain key aspects of the Court's current caseload and performance with that of the English House of Lords and the U.S. Supreme Court. …

Characterization And Soldering Of Organic Modified Aluminum Thin Films And Bond Pads, Rui Fang, Eric Dahlgren, Matthew O'Keefe, Thomas J. O'Keefe, Wu Sheng Shih, Daniel R. Gamota, Jie Zhang Jan 2001

Characterization And Soldering Of Organic Modified Aluminum Thin Films And Bond Pads, Rui Fang, Eric Dahlgren, Matthew O'Keefe, Thomas J. O'Keefe, Wu Sheng Shih, Daniel R. Gamota, Jie Zhang

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An immersion plating process using organic solutions was used to deposit a seed layer of copper and to activate the surface of thin film aluminum surfaces and bond pads. The seeded surfaces were subsequently electroless copper plated and tested for compatibility with soldering assembly. It was demonstrated that the copper particles deposited from the organic solution onto sputter deposited aluminum thin films were able to act as nucleation sites for the subsequent buildup of adherent, continuous copper films from conventional electroless plating baths. In addition, the metal deposition from organic solution process was found to be very selective on patterned …

Confession, Coercion, Procedural Error And The Juror, Kimberly Anne Jenkins Coffman Jan 2001

Confession, Coercion, Procedural Error And The Juror, Kimberly Anne Jenkins Coffman

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The current research examined whether mock jurors make differential assessments of guilt of defendants based on inclusion or exclusion of confession evidence and type of coercion to determine if jurors' behavioral reactions to confession evidence could be predicted. Hypotheses addressed effects of various factors on jurors' decisions of verdicts regarding defendants' guilt or innocence and their certainty of these verdicts: inclusion of confession evidence, type of coercion used in obtaining confessions, admissible or inadmissible presentation of confession evidence, and influence of potential predictor variables. Predictor variables assessed included participants' Belief in a Just World, Spheres of Control, New Authoritarianism, and …

Holding-Up More Than Half The Sky: Marketization And The Status Of Women In China, Anna M. Han Jan 2001

Holding-Up More Than Half The Sky: Marketization And The Status Of Women In China, Anna M. Han

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this article is to examine generally how Chinese women fared under communism and more specifically, delve into how marketization has adversely impacted the status of women in China. It is this author's contention that despite the overall improvements in the standard of living, Chinese women are increasingly being marginalized economically. The long-term effects of subjugating the advancement of women for the immediate benefits of China's experimentation with a market economy hold vast implications for the future of the country. As China progresses economically, politically and socially, it cannot afford to leave half of its population behind as …

The Right To Self-Government After Bush V. Gore, Paul D. Carrington, H. Jefferson Powell Jan 2001

The Right To Self-Government After Bush V. Gore, Paul D. Carrington, H. Jefferson Powell

Faculty Scholarship

'Bush v. Gore' was decided a year ago. As expected, it evoked a flood of journalistic and academic commentary. The present authors write to express dissatisfaction with the resulting literature. They find it in general to be dominated by the usual political discourse conducted from opposite ends of the usual political spectrum, with both ends sharing an assumption that the Supreme Court was animated in its decision by the usual political motives that it has become conventional to see in the actions of that institution. Left almost completely out of view have been the more personal selfish motives of the …
