Evaluation Of An Attached Growth Organic Media Bioreactor For Swine Waste Treatment And Odor Abatement, Allison Paige Kirkpatrick Dec 2001

Evaluation Of An Attached Growth Organic Media Bioreactor For Swine Waste Treatment And Odor Abatement, Allison Paige Kirkpatrick

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this study was to determine if an organic media attached growth bioreactor could effectively be used as a means of odor control for swine waste. The pilot-scale attached growth bioreactor system was evaluated against a standard pit recharge system, which served as the control. Performance was based on water quality testing, odor assessments by a human sensory panel, and air phase measurements of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide. The affect of aeration on the system was also evaluated, along with various types of organic media (kenaf, hardwood mulch, and corncobs). Overall, the bioreactor systems were effective in reducing …

A Transport Study Of Sodium Phosphate Dodecahydrate Pipeline Plugging Mechanisms, Vijay Kumar Raju Dec 2001

A Transport Study Of Sodium Phosphate Dodecahydrate Pipeline Plugging Mechanisms, Vijay Kumar Raju

Theses and Dissertations

The thesis investigates pipeline plugging mechanisms that have occurred during interim stabilization transfers at Hanford. A laboratory-scale saltwell pumping test loop was designed to evaluate a surrogate of Hanford Tank 241-SX-104 supernate. The effect of surrogate flow rate, cooling water flow rate and phosphate concentrations on plugging mechanisms was investigated. Critical parameters like particle and agglomerate size, velocity and bed growth rate were determined. Theoretical models were used to compare the experimental pressure rise and temperature drop of the surrogate in the channel. An operating region in which a plug would not form was developed, based on the experimental results. …

Implementation And Analysis Of The Ip Measurement Protocol (Ipmp), Steven Michael Carter Dec 2001

Implementation And Analysis Of The Ip Measurement Protocol (Ipmp), Steven Michael Carter

Theses and Dissertations

The increased size and complexity of the Internet necessitates a more substantial measurement protocol than is currently available. This work explores the IP Measurement Protocol, providing background information, covering the development of a reference implementation, and finally comparing its accuracy, overhead, and ease of implementation to the current generation of protocols used in network measurement. Vmware, a hardware simulation application, was used to simulate a network on which to test IPMP, as well as compare it to current generation tools. Ipmp_ping, a tool written to test IPMP, was pitted against ping and traceroute in order to attain round trip time, …

Thermal Effects In Dynamics Of Interfaces, Alexander Umantsev Dec 2001

Thermal Effects In Dynamics Of Interfaces, Alexander Umantsev

Chemistry and Physics Faculty Working Papers

Dynamical Ginzburg–Landau theory is applied to the study of thermal effects of motion of interfaces that appear after different phase transitions. These effects stem from the existence of the surface thermodynamic properties and temperature gradients in the interfacial transition region. Thermal effects may be explained by the introduction of a new thermodynamic force exerted on the interface, called here Gibbs–Duhem force, and the internal energy density flux through the interface. The evolution equations for the interfacial motion are derived. For the experimental verification of the thermal effects during continuous ordering the expression is derived for the amplitude of temperature waves.

What Are We Doing To Prevent Entry Of Potentially Catastrophic Foreign Animal Diseases Into The Usa, Gary C. Smith Dec 2001

What Are We Doing To Prevent Entry Of Potentially Catastrophic Foreign Animal Diseases Into The Usa, Gary C. Smith

Range Beef Cow Symposium

What are Foreign Animal Diseases? By definition, a Foreign Animal Disease (FAD) is one which originates in another country and can, or does, enter the USA. An agency of our federal government, the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), is charged with responsibility for preventing entry of FADs into our country and is especially vigilant regarding those FADs which would have potentially catastrophic effects on farm-animal populations, the agricultural economy and/or the public (human) health. Activities of APHIS specifically related to FADs include (USDA/APHIS, 2001): (a) Guarding our borders against foreign agricultural …

Testing Exception And Error Cases Using Runtime Fault Injection, James A. Whittaker, Florence E. Mottay, Ibrahim K. El-Far Dec 2001

Testing Exception And Error Cases Using Runtime Fault Injection, James A. Whittaker, Florence E. Mottay, Ibrahim K. El-Far

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Fault injection deals with the insertion or simulation of faults in order to test the robustness and fault tolerance of a software application. Such measures are generally performed on software that is mission critical, to the extent that failure could have significant negative ramifications. Actual injection of faults can be performed either at compile time, when additional code is inserted to force error conditions to evaluate to true, or at runtime during which faults are injected into the software's execution environment. This paper focuses on the latter type of fault injection and presents a new mechanism for inserting environmental faults. …

Effects Of Mineral Nutrition Of Immune Function And Factors That Affect Trace Mineral Requirements Of Beef Cattle, Terry E. Engle Dec 2001

Effects Of Mineral Nutrition Of Immune Function And Factors That Affect Trace Mineral Requirements Of Beef Cattle, Terry E. Engle

Range Beef Cow Symposium

Trace minerals exist in cells and tissues of the animal body in a variety of chemical combinations, and in characteristic concentrations, which vary with the trace mineral and tissue (McDowell, 1989, 1992; Underwood and Suttle, 1999). The concentrations of trace minerals must usually be maintained within quite narrow limits if the functional and structural integrity of the tissue is to be maintained and the growth, health, and productivity of the animal are to remain unimpaired (McDowell, 1989, 1992; Underwood and Suttle, 1999). Ingestion of diets that are deficient, imbalanced, or excessively high in trace minerals may induce changes in the …

The Informed Imagination: Researching And Building A Character’S Identity, Jeremy William Hilgert Dec 2001

The Informed Imagination: Researching And Building A Character’S Identity, Jeremy William Hilgert

Theses and Dissertations

An actor’s duty to the play is to present the most fully formed and vivid interpretation of the character. To do so, the actor must have an understanding of how that particular character developed their own sense of identity. This should be constructed not from the actor’s personal experience but from an informed imaginative experience founded on research and analysis. As pedagogues we are challenged with attempting to give young actors the skills for such an analysis. I have developed a formula to aid the actor in creating the foundations for such an interpretation founded upon the sociological understanding of …

Vcu News (2001-12-11) Dec 2001

Vcu News (2001-12-11)

VCU News, 2001-2002

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.
