Public Radio Listener Data Analysis: Mass Communication Research Course Student Projects, Jeremy Harris Lipschultz, Michael L. Hilt
Public Radio Listener Data Analysis: Mass Communication Research Course Student Projects, Jeremy Harris Lipschultz, Michael L. Hilt
Communication Faculty Publications
Faculty across the country are becoming increasingly aware of the usefulness of survey data in communication courses (Thorpe, 2000). Perhaps nowhere is this more important than in the quantitatively oriented research skills course (Bolding, 1996), particularly in the development of teaching models (Poindexter, 1998). The purpose of this article is to show how one public radio listener survey was used to instruct undergraduate mass communication students about the research process.
Ohio’S Competitive Advantage: Manufacturing Productivity, Edward W. Hill
Ohio’S Competitive Advantage: Manufacturing Productivity, Edward W. Hill
All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications
The underlying theme of Dr. Hill’s book is that manufacturing is the connective tissue of the state’s economy. This is true in two ways: The first is in terms of the distribution of employment, and the second connection is in locations of different parts of the manufacturing production process. The key to increasing incomes in all parts of Ohio is to ensure that the products made in manufacturing production platforms remain competitive, which means vigorously pursuing public policies that enhance productivity—investing in both labor and capital.

Introduction, Toward More Reliable Jury Verdicts?: Law, Technology And Media Developments Since The Trials Of Dr. Sam Sheppard, Patricia J. Falk
Law Faculty Articles and Essays
As the Ohio Supreme Court noted almost one-half century ago, the Sheppard case had it all—“Murder, mystery, society, sex[,] and suspense were combined in this case in such a manner as to intrigue and captivate the public fancy to a degree perhaps unparalleled in recent annals.” But apart from the tantalizingly lurid details of the murder of Marilyn Sheppard and the curious way the case became a national cause celebre, the Sheppard case is of historical significance and academic interest because of the many important and ground-breaking aspects of the case. In actuality, there have been three (and perhaps four) …
Cybersmear Or Cyber-Slapp: Analyzing Defamation Suits Against Online John Does As Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation, Joshua R. Furman
Cybersmear Or Cyber-Slapp: Analyzing Defamation Suits Against Online John Does As Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation, Joshua R. Furman
Seattle University Law Review
This Comment will first survey the law of cybersmear, illustrating the paradigmatic issues and legal theories employed. Then, it will discuss the free speech issues and theoretical bases argued in court and legal journals, paying special attention to the shortcomings in current protection of defendant anonymity. Next, it will examine the value of online anonymity and the protections that the Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation (SLAPP) theory offers. Finally, given the breakdown in the public and private space dichotomy, this Comment will argue for a new understanding of the SLAPP constitutional protections in cyberspace. This understanding will recognize the powerful …

Gay And Lesbian Applicants To The Bar: Even Lord Devlin Could Not Defend Exclusion, Joel J. Finer
Law Faculty Articles and Essays
In 1957, the publication of a report to Parliament, the Wolfenden Report, which recommended the repeal of laws criminalizing private homosexual conduct between consenting adults, sparked an intensely debated controversy in political philosophy and jurisprudence. The issue: is society justified in criminalizing behavior which, although causing no secular harm, transgresses widely held moral values? The principal proponent of morals legislation was Lord Patrick Devlin, who responded to the Wolfenden recommendation with a paper disputing the report's premises--that criminal law had no proper business punishing private immorality.Oxford Professor of Jurisprudence H.L.A. Hart, a philosophical successor to the libertarianism of John Stuart …

Does Technology Require New Law?, David D. Friedman
Does Technology Require New Law?, David D. Friedman
Faculty Publications
Technological change affects the law in at least three ways: (1) by altering the cost of violating and enforcing existing legal rules; (2) by altering the underlying facts that justify legal rules; and (3) by changing the underlying facts implicitly assumed by the law, making existing legal concepts and categories obsolete, even meaningless. The legal system can choose to ignore such changes. Alternatively, it may selectively alter its rules legislatively or via judicial interpretation. In this essay I first discuss, as an interesting historical example, past technological changes relevant to copyright law and the law's response. I then go on …

Measures Of Denitrification In Selected South Dakota Semi-Permanent Prairie Pothole Wetlands, Beverly S. Klein
Measures Of Denitrification In Selected South Dakota Semi-Permanent Prairie Pothole Wetlands, Beverly S. Klein
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Wetlands are an integral part of agricultural systems in the prairie pothole regions of the North Central United States and Canadian Provinces. Little research has been done on denitrification in prairie potholes, and a better understanding of their denitrifying capability could aide in optimizing management practices near pothole areas. Most probable number (MPN) and denitrifying enzyme activity (DEA or Phase I) assays were conducted. Most probable number (MPN) measures were used to give an estimate of dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonia (DNRA) and denitrifying populations present in the wetlands. This study involved 3 selected semi-permanent prairie pothole wetlands near Madison, …

Time And The Academic Librarian, Jeanne M. Brown
Time And The Academic Librarian, Jeanne M. Brown
Library Faculty Research
For academic librarians to balance time requirements for research, service and job duties they need a keen sense of where their time is allocated. Although the literature gives some idea of average time allocated, a more detailed view is obtained through examination of one librarian’s seven-year accumulation of daily time logs. The log as a method for achieving balance and the goal of balance itself are explored.

In Vitro Analysis Of Integrin Mediated Adhesion, Migration, And Signaling, William Lathrop Rust
In Vitro Analysis Of Integrin Mediated Adhesion, Migration, And Signaling, William Lathrop Rust
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Integrins are cellular adhesion receptors whose functions are critical to the progression of solid tissue cancers. The research described here involves four projects aimed at understanding how integrins modulate key elements of carcinogenesis, (adhesion and migration), on laminin basal lamina proteins; In order to carry out these studies, a novel fluorescence based protocol for quantifying cell migration towards a bound substrate was developed (Chapter 2). This method is more reliable, efficient, and informative than currently available protocols. I demonstrate its use as a screen for migration-blocking chemotherapeutic drugs; The small heat shock protein 27 (HSP27) is found to be over-expressed …
The Politics Of Lesbian "Nature": A Feminist Critique Of Scientific Knowledge And Practice, Jaime L Phillips
The Politics Of Lesbian "Nature": A Feminist Critique Of Scientific Knowledge And Practice, Jaime L Phillips
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation is a feminist analysis of scientific articles published from 1990--2000 reporting findings from research on biological origins of lesbian and bisexual orientations in women. Informed by feminist standpoint epistemologies and the theories and empirical research of the interdisciplinary field of feminist science studies, I assert that scientific efforts to locate biological origins of lesbian and bisexual orientations in women are likely to be infused with culturally-based assumptions and beliefs regarding sex, gender, sexual orientation, and race. To the extent that these assumptions and beliefs go unacknowledged in the science, they place limitations on the knowledge claims that can …

A Descriptive Study Of The Organizational Culture And Structure Of Accelerated Schools, Susan Virginia Steaffens
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to survey teachers at five accelerated schools in the Clark County School District to determine their perceptions of the organizational culture and properties of their respective schools, and to determine if there are any differences between the results on these surveys and the original studies; Two instruments, the Organisational Culture Assessment Inventory (OCAI) and the Structural Properties Questionnaire (SPQ), were administered in the Spring of 2001 to 277 teachers from five selected accelerated schools in the Clark County School District. This resulted in a response rate of 35%. The stories and metaphors obtained from …

Development And Validation Of An Instrument For Student Evaluation Of Web -Based Instruction, Ingrid Stewart
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The current study attempted to develop an instrument to be used by instructors to conduct a comprehensive Web-based course evaluation. Four phases of instrument development were implemented. Phase I, involved the development if items through a review of the literature and the opinions of instructors and students enrolled in four Web-based mathematics courses. After the items were formulated and a response format was established, a questionnaire blueprint was developed. An item review, a content validation study, and an item tryout were conducted; In Phase II, the initial questionnaire was placed on the World Wide Web together with a cover letter …
Postmodern American Sociology: A Response To The Aesthetic Challenge, Jongryul Choi
Postmodern American Sociology: A Response To The Aesthetic Challenge, Jongryul Choi
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Over the past two decades, American sociologists have debated about the postmodern and what we might call "postmodern American sociology" began to emerge at the turn of this century. This dissertation examines the nature of the postmodern in general, and postmodern American sociology in particular, in terms of three models of knowledge: science, morality, and aesthetics; This dissertation pays close attention to the fact that science, morality, and aesthetics began to be differentiated from religion in the modern era, which posited two problems: the problem of legitimacy of knowledge and the problem of figuring out the relationship among science, morality, …
A Comparative Study Of Funding Mechanisms For Community Colleges In The State Of Nevada And Selected States, Christopher Pat Kelly
A Comparative Study Of Funding Mechanisms For Community Colleges In The State Of Nevada And Selected States, Christopher Pat Kelly
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation was to compare the mechanism utilized by the State of Nevada to fund its community colleges with the models used by other selected states to fund their two-year institutions. The comparison states that were chosen represented peer institutions of Nevada community colleges or systems held in high regard by the American Association of Community Colleges; These selected states, as well as Nevada, face difficult fiscal challenges funding their two-year colleges. Not only is there increasing competition for limited state resources, but virtually all of the states are projecting budget shortfalls due to the slowing economy; …
Television As A Medium To College Students' Predispositions: Portrayals Of Professors And Their Profession, Mona Millicent Lauber
Television As A Medium To College Students' Predispositions: Portrayals Of Professors And Their Profession, Mona Millicent Lauber
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Students bring preconceived beliefs and attitudes to their initial college experience. These predispositions influence their communication and interaction with faculty and others in the higher education environment. Previous research identified family, school, and peers as sources that contribute to the formation of students' predispositions. This study was designed to explore television as a fourth medium to college students' predispositions; Drawing from the perspectives of social cognitive theory and cultivation theory, portrayals of professors were analyzed in 15 episodes across three television programs. The content analysis employed both quantitative and qualitative techniques. Personality categories for the quantitative portion were adapted from …

Numerical And Experimental Investigation Of Deformation And Strength Properties Of Lithophysae -Rich Tuff And Analog Materials, Bahri Burcin Avar
Numerical And Experimental Investigation Of Deformation And Strength Properties Of Lithophysae -Rich Tuff And Analog Materials, Bahri Burcin Avar
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Portions of the high-level nuclear waste repository in Yucca Mountain will be located in lithophysae-rich tuff formations. Understanding the mechanical properties of the lithophysae-rich tuff, including deformation modulus, deformation ratio and compressive strength, is an important issue for design and the performance of the repository tunnels. These properties are expected to be significantly affected by lithophysal porosity; Two different research directions are implemented in this dissertation. First, uniaxial compression testing is simulated using finite difference technique on models containing circular holes in order to investigate the effect of porosity on deformation parameters. Numerical results are compared with biaxial test results …
