Conjugated Linoleic Acid (Cla), Body Fat, And Apoptosis, Jess L. Miner, C. Cederberg, Merlyn K. Nielsen, Xiaoli Chen, Clifton Baile

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Objective: The objective of the study was to determine if consumption of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) by mice could induce apoptosis in adipose tissue. Other objectives were to determine the influence of feeding mice CLA for ≤2 weeks on body fat, energy expenditure, and feed intake.

Research Methods and Procedures: A mixture of CLA isomers (predominantly c9,t11 and t10,c12) was included in the AIN-93G diet at 0, 1, and 2%, and fed to mice for 12 days (Trial 1), or was included at 2% and fed to mice for 0, 5, and 14 days (Trial 2). Feed intake …

Design And Implementation Of A Lidar Imaging System, Cynthia Scigaj Jan 2001

Design And Implementation Of A Lidar Imaging System, Cynthia Scigaj

Theses

Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) is a valuable tool for collecting information along the coastline, which is also referred to as the littoral zone. Data collected in this area is useful for the study and analysis of algae growth, water depths, and identifying objects in shallow waters. A LIDAR system typically consists of a pulsed LASER, a light collection device, and a sensor. Currently at RIT we have an airborne imager called the Modular Imaging Spectrometer Instrument (MISI). MISI is a passive system and currently obtains data in the visible and infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. My objective was …

The Gifted And Talented : Children With Unlimited Horizons, Lisa Perez

Honors Capstones

Educating gifted and talented students has become a difficult task for teachers. This capstone examines the various methods used to identify gifted students and their needs. Programs and schools that offer assistance in educating gifted students are introduced and explained in detail. The Gifted and Talented: Children with Unlimited Horizons presents the method of using a literature curriculum that highlights children's tradebooks as a way to enhance the learning experience for gifted students. Included in the capstone is a booklist of children's tradebooks, summaries and extensions of these books for a model 4th grade social studies curriculum. To gather information …

Literacy And The Deaf Individual : What Are We Going To Do About It?, Tonya Seger Jan 2001

Literacy And The Deaf Individual : What Are We Going To Do About It?, Tonya Seger

Honors Capstones

Do you find it acceptable for students to graduate high school with a third grade literacy level? Of course not! Unfortunately, the average deaf and hard of hearing student graduates with little more than the literacy skills of a nine-year old. Although this fact is well known, not much is happening to change it. This paper covers the following topics: history of deaf education, definition of literacy, why literacy is important, Deaf Culture", literacy in the workplace, why literacy levels are so low, and what we can do about it? Research indicates that literacy levels of deaf and hard of …

The Reasonable Girl: A New Reasonableness Standard To Determine Sexual Harassment In Schools, Carrie L. Hoon Jan 2001

The Reasonable Girl: A New Reasonableness Standard To Determine Sexual Harassment In Schools, Carrie L. Hoon

Washington Law Review

The U.S. Supreme Court held in Davis v. Monroe County Board of Education that schools may be liable under Title IX of the 1972 Education Amendments for student-to-student hostile-environment sexual harassment. Although the Court required that conduct be severe, pervasive, and objectively offensive to qualify as sexual harassment under the statute, it did not establish an objective reasonableness standard to evaluate allegedly harassing conduct. In the context of Title VII employment-discrimination jurisprudence, some courts apply a reasonable-woman standard to determine what conduct is objectively hostile or abusive such that it constitutes actionable hostile-environment sexual harassment in the workplace. This Comment …

Comparison Of Traditional Pull-Out Therapy Versus Collaborative Classroom-Based Services On Articulation Skills, Pamela S. Davidson Jan 2001

Comparison Of Traditional Pull-Out Therapy Versus Collaborative Classroom-Based Services On Articulation Skills, Pamela S. Davidson

Masters Theses

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the improvement of articulation skills of children who received speech services through collaborative classroom-based intervention versus those who were provided services through traditional pull-out therapy. Nine children in first and second grades were treated using a collaborative classroom-based model and eleven first and second grade children were provided treatment in a pull-out setting. All twenty students were assessed using the Secord Contextual Articulation Tests (S-CAT) (Secord & Shine, 1997) at the beginning and end of the study. Children treated in the classroom setting weekly received 30 minutes of intervention time from …

Investigation Of Optical Interference Effects In The Generalized Eikonal Formalism, Nyok Fah Thong Jan 2001

Investigation Of Optical Interference Effects In The Generalized Eikonal Formalism, Nyok Fah Thong

Student Works (2000-2009)

In recent studies, the generalized eikonal equation and the equation of continuity had been shown able to describe wave phenomena, which cannot be obtained by simple geometrical optics. The time dependent generalized eikonal equation, derived from the time dependent Maxwell wave equation, is able to describe dispersion and soliton effects. This method was exten4ed to include diffraction, self-trapping and self-focusing in linear and non-linear media for stationary waves. For cases that have no analytical solution, the generalized eikonal equation and the equation of continuity are solved numerically. The solutions are in good agreement with the solutions obtained from the Fresnel-Kirchhoff …

Tackling The Deficit - It Solutions For Art Appreciation - Needs Study And Provision Project At Primary School Level., Séan Ó Hargáin

Theses

This project looks at the changing environment in terms of the approach to the Visual Arts curriculum at Primary School level. It aims to provide an innovative solution to the art appreciation area, which is being given equal status with the art creation area, which traditionally has been the main focus of the curriculum.

The Project includes a review of the curricular climate, both at home and abroad. In this context it focusses particularly on the role of Information Technology in addressing access problems from those living remote from major population, and therefore major artistic centres.

Primary Research included involved …
