The Garment Industry's Best Kept Secret : Contuined Global Expansions Of Sweatshops, Wyndy Neidholt
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
Finding out the truth can hurt to the depths of one's soul. Proud American citizens have recently learned the truth of the re-emergence of sweatshops from New York to California. It can be difficult to grasp the idea that everyday in the United States people are working for far less than minimum wage in deplorable conditions. After all, American politicians frequently give advice to Third World countries on how to set up labor laws and establish safe working conditions. There are several reasons for the re-emergence of sweatshops globally. The competition for work has caused wages to decrease at a …

The presence of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity is demonstrated in the tropical marine cnidarian Aiptasia pallida and in its symbiotic dinoflagellate algae, Symbiodinium bermudense. Enzyme activity was assayed by measuring the conversion of arginine to citrulline. Biochemical characterization of NOS from Aiptasia was characterized with respect to cellular localization, substrate and cofactor requirements, inhibitors, and kinetics. In response to acute temperature shock, anemones retracted their tentacles. Animals subjected to such stress had lower NOS activities than did controls. Treatment with NOS inhibitors caused tentacular retraction, while treatment with the NOS substrate L-arginine inhibited this response to stress, as did …

Participant Interaction Models And Roles In A Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (Cscl) Environment: A Malaysian Case Study, E.G.S. Daniel
Research Publications (2000 to 2005)
In this paper, three models of participant interactions in a Web-based instruction courses were identified among a diverse group of seven adult learners in a Course-On-Line, Masters of Instructional Technology Program at the University of Malaya (Malaysia). The three models were named the cyclical model, the hierarchical model, and the parallel model. The cyclical model depicts the interactions of the computer, instructor and the learner as in a cycle. The hierarchical model views the instructor and the computer as the participants in a level higher than the learner. The parallel model sees the learner and the instructor progressing parallel to …

The Humanities In Action : A Report To The People Of Texas, Texas Council For The Humanities
Documents from the State of Texas-Archive
The humanities are more than a list of academic disciplines. They are the means through which we learn to appreciate the diversity of our cultural heritage and that of others, the tools through which we learn to think critically, to understand and to shape the complex world in which we live, to develop our moral and aesthetic sensibilities, and to examine wisely the public issues that shape our everyday lives. But in this talk of programs and projects, global and local issues, history, literature, and cultural traditions, let us celebrate the human ties which inform the public humanities. This report …
