Phospholipase D1 As A Regulator Of Morphogenesis In Candida Albicans, Carol Anne Baker Jan 2001

Phospholipase D1 As A Regulator Of Morphogenesis In Candida Albicans, Carol Anne Baker

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Phospholipase D (PLD) enzymes play significant roles in phospholipid metabolism, secretion, and lipid signal transduction. The yeast Candida albicans possesses a PLD activity that is designated PLD1. This enzyme has been implicated in the regulation of dimorphic transition. In vivo assays using sphinganine, propranolol, and staurosporine were used to test the importance of phosphatidic acid (PA) and diacylglycerol (DAG), two downstream products of PLDI activity. A concentration of 5 µM sphinganine was sufficient to decrease the appearance of germ tubes with no effect on culture doubling times. However, at higher concentrations sphinganine was inhibitory to cell growth. Propranolol concentrations up …

"The Only Way To Teach These People Is To Kill Them": Pedagogy As Communicative Action In The Major Plays Of David Mamet, Jeffrey Otto Strasburg Jan 2001

"The Only Way To Teach These People Is To Kill Them": Pedagogy As Communicative Action In The Major Plays Of David Mamet, Jeffrey Otto Strasburg

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The mentor-student relationship is a recurring motif in the work of playwright David Mamet. Mamet's portrayal of this relationship demonstrates a conception of human interaction in ways that closely parallel Jurgen Habermas's theory of "communicative action." Habermas posits his theory as a decentered method of examining human subjects' attempts to establish intersubjective claims of validity with other subjects through the media of communication and argumentation. Within this concept, Habermas defines the "Ideal Speech Situation" (ISS), or rational discourse free of any relations of domination aimed at creating an intersubjective recognition of validity between two speaking subjects; Mamet's own conception of …

A Comparative Analysis Of Church And State Issue Attitudes In The United States And Norway, Bryan Arlon Smith Rasmussen Jan 2001

A Comparative Analysis Of Church And State Issue Attitudes In The United States And Norway, Bryan Arlon Smith Rasmussen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study looks at the effect that the relationship between church and state has on the people of Norway and the United States. It is a study of political culture and socialization that compares the role of the established state church in Norway to the "Wall of Separation" that exists in the United States; Public opinion data is obtained from the World Values Survey and presented in terms of the current Accommodationist/Separationist debate. The most important variable in determining issue attitudes turns out to be whether or not a person attends church regularly, and not their denominational identity. The study …

Processing And Conservation Of The Grain Of Corn (Zea Mays L.) And Project Of Industrial Feasibility, Marina Caballero Bautista

Theses and Dissertations

Since Pre-Colombian time corn already formed part of the diet in Aztec and Mayan cultures, and actually represented in them a fountain of wealth and power. The cultivation is utilized in the region in multiple forms, not only for the human diet, but also as feed for animals. Corn is third place in the world production, following wheat and rice. It is cultivated in a total surface of 106 million hectares, its yield is 215 million tons, that represents an average of 2 tons per hectare. The cultivation of corn has special importance, given that this cereal constitutes the basic …

Horse Maiming In The English Countryside: Moral Panic, Human Deviance, And The Social Construction Of Victimhood, Roger Yates, Chris Powell, Piers Beirne Jan 2001

Horse Maiming In The English Countryside: Moral Panic, Human Deviance, And The Social Construction Of Victimhood, Roger Yates, Chris Powell, Piers Beirne

Department of Criminology

The societal reaction to a series of horse assaults in rural Hampshire during the 1990s was a rare example of a moral panic about crime and deviance in which animals other than humans occupy, or seemed to occupy the central role of victim. This paper explores how the nature of the relationships between humans and animals is revealed through authoritative utterances about offenders and victims by the mass media, the police, and the humans who felt they had a stake in the horses' well-being. Analysis of how and when victimhood is ascribed to animals helps to uncover the invisible assaults …

Vertical Profiles Of Streambed Hydraulic Conductivity Determined Using Slug Tests In Central And Western Nebraska, David L. Rus, Virginia L. Mcguire, Brian R. Zurbuchen, Vitaly A. Zlotnik Jan 2001

Vertical Profiles Of Streambed Hydraulic Conductivity Determined Using Slug Tests In Central And Western Nebraska, David L. Rus, Virginia L. Mcguire, Brian R. Zurbuchen, Vitaly A. Zlotnik

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Many issues of water-resources management rely on modeling of ground-water/surface-water interactions, and streambed hydraulic conductivity is a key parameter controlling the water fluxes across the stream/aquifer interface. However, in central and western Nebraska, this parameter is generally undefined. The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Nebraska Platte River Cooperative Hydrology Study Group, performed slug tests at 15 steam sites in the Platte, Republican, and Little Blue River watersheds to determine the hydraulic conductivity of streambeds in central and western Nebraska. Slug tests were completed at several discrete depth intevals using pneumatic or mechanical methods, and the water-level response was …

Are Contemporary Community Standards No Longer Contemporary, Roman A. Kostenko Jan 2001

Are Contemporary Community Standards No Longer Contemporary, Roman A. Kostenko

Cleveland State Law Review

This note concurs with the decision reached by the Third Circuit. The federal obscenity law, which incorporated the contemporary community standards test is unconstitutional as applied to expression on the internet because it has chilling effect on the exercise of freedom of speech as guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. Because freedom of speech would be restrained by any incorporation of community standards in federal regulation of the internet, the legislature should refrain from adopting a standard that would apply in all internet situations. Rather, with respect to obscenity, the internet should be left …

Influence Of Media And Technology: Changing Roles And Responsibilities, Terry Gilbert Jan 2001

Influence Of Media And Technology: Changing Roles And Responsibilities, Terry Gilbert

Cleveland State Law Review

High profile cases are therefore media driven. What happens in the courtroom is a reflection of the attitudes of the larger society. Such was the case then and it is the case now. From the cases of Lizzy Borden, the Lindburgh kidnapping, O.J. Simpson, and Sheppard, anyone who thinks justice is completely blind to the influences of popular opinion is blind themselves. All too often justice is a function of political culture. The courtroom is nothing but a vehicle to carry out the popular will, often with lynch mob mentality. Despite the attempts to control this phenomenon, and certainly the …

The Constitutional Legitimacy Of The Civil Provisions Of The Federal Wiretap Act - A Suggestion To The Supreme Court In The Case Of Bartnicki V. Vopper, Jess Gamiere

Cleveland State Law Review

Title III of the Federal Wiretap Act, as amended, remains the "primary law guarding the privacy of personal communication [among private citizens] in the United States." This piece of legislation will serve as the focal point of this Note. This Note will first discuss the history and context of the statute under which two cases have arisen. It will then survey various Supreme Court cases addressing the tension between the First Amendment and the right to privacy so as to provide the reader with a better understanding of the conflict between these two constitutional rights. Then it will outline and …

Periodic Acoustic Radiation From A Low Aspect Ratio Propeller, John David Muench Jan 2001

Periodic Acoustic Radiation From A Low Aspect Ratio Propeller, John David Muench

Open Access Dissertations

An experimental program was conducted with the objective of providing high fidelity measurements of propeller inflow, unsteady blade surface pressures, and discrete acoustic radiation over a wide range of speeds. Anechoic wind tunnel experiments were preformed using the SISUP propeller. The upstream stator blades generate large wake deficits that result in periodic unsteady blade forces that acoustically radiate at blade passing frequency and higher harmonics. The experimental portion of this research successfully measured the inflow velocity, blade span unsteady pressures and directive characteristics of the blade-rate radiated noise associated with this complex propeller geometry while the propeller was operating on …

Soil Factors Influencing Eutrophication. In Soilguide. A Handbook For Understanding And Managing Agricultural Soils. (Ed. Geoff Moore), David Weaver, Robert Summers

Bulletins 4000 -

Eutrophication is essentially the nutrient enrichment of waterways leading to algal growth. It must be controlled to maintain sustainable agricultural systems and the main mechanisms of control are stabilising catchment processes and reducing nutrient output.

Eutrophication can be defined as 'the nutrient enrichment of waters which results in the stimulation of an array of symptomatic changes, among which increased production of algae and macrophytes, deterioration of water quality and other symptomatic changes, are found to be undesirable and interfere with water uses' (OECD 1982). The word eutrophic is a Greek word that means 'well fed'. The food referred to is …

Telling A Less Suspicious Story: Notes Toward A Non-Skeptical Approach To Legal/Cultural Analysis, Paul Schiff Berman Jan 2001

Telling A Less Suspicious Story: Notes Toward A Non-Skeptical Approach To Legal/Cultural Analysis, Paul Schiff Berman

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

In the generation of law and society research that emerged with the formation of the Law and Society Association, sociolegal scholars, building on the Legal Realist attack on formalism, told a story primarily about the possibility of social progress through law. Over the past two decades, however, sociolegal scholars have become increasingly disenchanted with the reformist project. These writers, influenced by Michel Foucault and other postmodern theorists, have begun to see law not as an instrument for dispensing justice, but as a constitutive societal force shaping social relations, constructing meaning, and defining categories of behavior. As part of the move …

In Vitro Plantlet Regeneration From Mature Embryos Of Linden (Tilia Platyphyllos Scop.) And Multiplication Of Its Buds, Ali̇ Ömer Üçler, Nuray Mollamehmetoğlu

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

In this study, the effects of different sucrose, BAP and Kinetin concentrations in MS medium on plantlet formation, bud formation on the plantlets and development of embryos isolated from the seeds of Tilia platyphyllos under in vitro conditions were investigated. In addition, the effects of different culture times on the development of embryos and plantlet formation were studied. The results indicated that the cultured embryos on the media supplemented with sucrose (10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 g/l) developed plantlets with epicotyls and roots. The best results were obtained on the medium supplemented with 30 g/l of sucrose. Epicotyls …

Beyond Counting Votes: The Political Economy Of Bush V. Gore, Michael B. Abramowicz, Maxwell L. Stearns Jan 2001

Beyond Counting Votes: The Political Economy Of Bush V. Gore, Michael B. Abramowicz, Maxwell L. Stearns

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

The Supreme Court Justices' votes in Bush v. Gore revealed a doctrinal inversion. The conservative justices limited the Florida Supreme Court's power to construe state election law and embraced an expansive application of equal protection doctrine to determine the outcome of a presidential election, while the liberal justices advocated judicial restraint in presidential elections and respect for state court construction of state law. This anomaly invited claims in the popular press and in the legal academy that justices were behaving strategically, a timely observation given an increasing focus in recent judicial politics literature on strategic behavior by justices. In this …

Rab11-Like Gtpase Associates With And Regulates The Structure And Function Of The Contractile Vacuole System In Dictyostelium, Ed Harris, Kunito Yoshida, James Cardelli, John Bush

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Screening of a cDNA library revealed the existence of a Dictyostelium cDNA encoding a protein 80% identical at the amino acid level to mammalian Rab11. Subcellular fractionation and immunofluorescence studies revealed that DdRab11 was exclusively associated with the ATPase proton pump-rich contractile vacuole membrane system, consisting of a reticular network and bladder-like vacuoles. Video microscopy of cells expressing GFP-DdRab11 revealed that this Rab was associated with contractile vacuolar bladders undergoing formation, fusion and expulsion of water. The association of DdRab11 with contractile vacuole membranes was disrupted when cells were exposed to either hypo-osmotic conditions or an inhibitor of the ATPase …
