Rapid Metabolic Recovery Following Vigorous Exercise In Burrow-Dwelling Larval Sea Lampreys (Petromyzon Marinus), Michael P. Wilkie, Philip G. Bradshaw, Vincent Joanis, Jaime F. Claude, Shannon L. Swindell

Biology Faculty Publications

Although the majority of the sea lamprey’s (Petromyzon marinus) life cycle is spent as a burrow-dwelling larva, or ammocoete, surprisingly little is known about intermediary metabolism in this stage of the lamprey’s life history. In this study, larval sea lampreys (ammocoetes) were vigorously exercised for 5 min, and their patterns of metabolic fuel depletion and replenishment and oxygen consumption, along with measurements of net whole-body acid and ion movements, were followed during a 4–24-h postexercise recovery period. Exercise led to initial five- to sixfold increases in postexercise oxygen consumption, which remained significantly elevated by 1.5–2.0 times for the …

The Invisible Can Or, Gendering Corporate Globalization Trouble: Technological Utopianism And The Language Of Erasure, Marleen S. Barr Jan 2001

The Invisible Can Or, Gendering Corporate Globalization Trouble: Technological Utopianism And The Language Of Erasure, Marleen S. Barr

Publications and Research

In the following, noted science fiction scholar Marleen S. Barr argues for an increased attention to science fiction as a literature of the potentials of globalization, a genre that has largely been marginalized in discussions of the future of a globalized techno-culture. Further, Barr argues for greater attention being paid to feminist utopian fiction which helps to reimagine women's roles in the increasingly complex, and increasingly capitalistic, globalized techno-culture that has continued to marginalize the female body (and consciousness) in much the same way that scholars have denied the possibilities of utopian science fiction.

Russian Citizens' Trusted Sources Of Health Promotion Information, Cynthia M. Goody, Elizabeth Swanson, Ann L. Bossen, Elena V. Frolova, Olga Kuznetsova, Swajatoslaw Plavinski

International Journal of Global Health

This study examined Russian citizens' trusted sources of health information. A random sample of 906 people, from two villages in St. Petersburg, Russia, responded to a health needs assessment questionnaire. Results suggest that medical professionals and special books, such as informational pamphlets about treating a myriad of illnesses, are significant trusted sources of health information for people in Russia. Further, these data suggest differences between trusted sources of health information exist between villages rather than by gender or age group. This work has implications for health care practitioners in Russia, who are advancing the discipline of family practice, as well …

Technological Innovations And The Work Of The Accounting Historian: Some Key Issues, Leonard Goodman, Dan Palmon

Accounting Historians Journal

This paper considers how innovations in information technology have changed the process by which accounting historians collect primary and secondary sources of information. It examines how web-based systems have made it possible for historians to collect data from what is effectively a twenty-four-hour on-line library. The paper explores some of the limitations of technological innovations and considers the steps necessary to ensure future access to information stored in digital electronic form. It also considers the challenges involved in authenticating primary source documents such as e-mail and facsimiles and the impact of encryption on the availability of data in the future. …

Adapting E-Business To The Undergraduate Entrepreneurship Curriculum In The New Economy: Development Of An E-Husiness Course With A Focus On Field-Based Projects, Peter H. Hackbert Jan 2001

Adapting E-Business To The Undergraduate Entrepreneurship Curriculum In The New Economy: Development Of An E-Husiness Course With A Focus On Field-Based Projects, Peter H. Hackbert

Journal of International Information Management

Organization creation separates entrepreneurship from other disciplines. In today's rapidly growing net economy and ever-changing entrepreneurial environment, discovering the behaviors of individuals who create new organizations, and observing the behaviors or organizational personnel who exploit new market opportunities within existing organizations are the foci of the behavioral school of entrepreneurship. Business schools that adapt curricula to examine the kinds of activities entrepreneurs perform, the information they process, with whom they must work, where, and how frequently may help describe the emerging needs of the current dynamic new economy. The following paper describes the development of an e-business entrepreneurship course with …

User Perceptions Of The Benefits Of Implementing An Erp System: A Case Study, Jaideep Motwani, Dinesh Mirchandani, Victor E. Sower

Journal of International Information Management

Given the large time and fitiancial commitment that an ERP project requires and the potential benefits it can offer if successfidly implemented, it is important to understand the factors that facilitate and inhibit the success ofEP,P implementation. By means of a case study of a global energy company, we first examine the factors that facilitate and inhibit the success of their ERP implementation. We draw on the theory of business process change when analyzing the implementation process. Next, we examine the perceptions non-management professional users of the ERP system (who were not members of the ERP implementation team) have of …

Physical Security Models, Philosophies, And Context, Karen A. Forcht, S. E. Kruck

Journal of International Information Management

This paper presents physical security of a computer facility within the context of a corporate environment. The context is established from several different perspectives. It first presents physical security philosophies and illustrates the philosophies via the Onion and Garlic Models. It defines a process for identifying and describing transition strategies between security levels. Once the models are defined, a Macro View of physical security is presented. This view discusses physical security goals and critical factors such as budget, monitoring and redundancy. With this context established, the Micro View is presented. Its focus is on information technology (IT) facilities that protect …
