Film Review: The House Of Mirth, James Morrison Jan 2001

Film Review: The House Of Mirth, James Morrison

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

Catharsis, said Aristotle, is the goal of drama. You'd never know it from The House of Mirth, an adaptation of Edit Wharton's 1905 novel by the great British filmmaker Terence Davies. Its intensity is distilled in its uncompromising restraint, and though there are passing moments of anger in the film, and rare, sudden swellings of grief, there's not a second of real release in this grim anatomy of a socialite's inexorable decline. Yet the film's relentlessness does not feel cruel. It feels like the piercing expression of a boundless pity.

Hung Out To Dry: Clothing Design Protection Pitfalls In United States Law, Anne Theodore Briggs Jan 2001

Hung Out To Dry: Clothing Design Protection Pitfalls In United States Law, Anne Theodore Briggs

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

The United States' trend toward longer, stronger intellectual property protection has failed to include protection for clothing design. The design of clothing itself lacks protection, while the surface decoration, fabric design, and labels are protected. This article examines current United States intellectual property law and its shortcomings, while discussing why enactment of design legislation fails. The author argues that passage of clothing design protection laws would benefit both United States consumers and clothing designers.

The Irony Of News Coverage: How The Media Harm Their Own First Amendment Rights, Clay Calvert, Robert D. Richards Jan 2001

The Irony Of News Coverage: How The Media Harm Their Own First Amendment Rights, Clay Calvert, Robert D. Richards

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

This article argues that the First Amendment protection provided to the news media today actually may be harming -- unjustifiably and unnecessarily -- the scope of First Amendment protection given to other sectors of the media, most notably, the Hollywood entertainment industry and non-mainstream journalists. Using the death of Princess Diana and the school shootings at Columbine High School to illustrate a seven-step process that the authors assert gives rise to this disturbing irony, the article contends that high-profile journalistic coverage of these events produced false public perceptions of reality and media culpability - a false perception that the paparazzi …

Psychological Warfare, Japanese, Robert J. Bunker Jan 2001

Psychological Warfare, Japanese, Robert J. Bunker

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Japanese psychological warfare operations were modeled on campaigns conducted by the British in World War I and the Germans in World War II. The Germans established a branch of their propaganda ministry in Japan, which resulted in close psychological warfare collaboration between these two Axis powers. As a result, their propaganda themes, such as both nations having divine or semidivine rulers and being populated by super races whose destiny was to rule the world, were strikingly parallel.

Do Shareholders Have Obligations To Stakeholders?, Earl W. Spurgin Jan 2001

Do Shareholders Have Obligations To Stakeholders?, Earl W. Spurgin

Philosophy

The question of whether, and to what extent, business managers have obligations to stakeholders has been the principal theme in much of recent business ethics literature. The question of whether shareholders have obligations to stakeholders, however, has not been addressed sufficiently. I provide some needed attention to this matter by examining the positions of shareholders in the contemporary world of investing. Their positions are considerably different than that often envisioned by business ethicists and economists where shareholders determine the directions of corporate activities through their voting decisions. Typical contemporary investors rarely control corporate activities. If they own corporate securities directly, …

Publication Projects With Esl/Efl Students:A Handbook For Teachers, April A. Minerich

MA TESOL Collection

This paper is based on my experience teaching courses in which students created publications. I frequently teach both newsletter classes and memory book classes to students of other languages who are studying English in an intensive program. I have also taught classes in which ESL students produced student directories. I have participated in developing cookbooks. I also publish student work in certain classes that I teach.

It describes the process I use to do publication projects. I include theory to support the soundness of this idea in ESL/EFL instruction. The strategy for implementing the class is described. It then moves …

Privacy And Consumer Agency In The Information Age: Between Prying Profilers And Preening Webcams, Nikhilesh Dholakia, Detlev Zwick Jan 2001

Privacy And Consumer Agency In The Information Age: Between Prying Profilers And Preening Webcams, Nikhilesh Dholakia, Detlev Zwick

College of Business Faculty Publications

This article is about the ability of the consumer to control his or her destiny in the new electronic marketspace. Two seemingly opposite phenomena – the need for privacy and the desire for exhibitionism and voyeurism – are vying for attention on the media landscape. We believe the simultaneous occurrence of privacy concerns and ultraexhibitionism is not coincidental. Indeed, exhibitionism and voyeurism seem to offer new tools for consumer resistance against the electronic surveillance systems in networked markets and are inextricably linked to consumers’ desire for control over their intimate personal information.
