The Socio-Cultural Function Of Media In Nineteenth-Century Latin America, Annette Paatz Jun 2001

The Socio-Cultural Function Of Media In Nineteenth-Century Latin America, Annette Paatz

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article, "The Socio-Cultural Function of Media in Nineteenth-Century Latin America," Annette Paatz explores the function of the review genre in the context of Latin American nation building. Paatz focuses, on the one hand, on the genre's nationalist purposes and, on the other, on the appropriateness for intercultural communication. Drawing on the concept of mediated communication as social practice in the context of media cultural studies, Paatz analyses the reviews as representations of nineteenth-century Latin America's negotiations of transatlantic and thus intercultural relationships. She highlights the pragmatic ways in which Latin America utilized European media products in order to …

Vargas Llosa's La Ciudad Y Los Perros And The European Novel Of Adolescence, John Neubauer Jun 2001

Vargas Llosa's La Ciudad Y Los Perros And The European Novel Of Adolescence, John Neubauer

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper, "Vargas Llosa's La Ciudad y los perros and the European Novel of Adolescence," John Neubauer investigates Mario Vargas Llosa's 1962 novel about cadets in a military school located just outside of Lima, Peru. The life of a gang (the dogs) in the city and on the premises is described from constantly changing perspectives. Neubauer's article looks at Vargas Llosa's work in terms of features one finds in narratives about adolescents in European literatures around 1900 and where these texts can be read with three main foci found in them. Thematically, the texts focus on the city and …

Extending Our Reach: Strategic Opportunities For Cooperative Extension To Promote Infant Health Through Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Preventative Education, Linda A. Jouridine, Stephen D. Green

Journal of Extension

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) remains one of the deadliest health risks for infants up to age 1 year, claiming nearly 5,000 lives annually. The number of SIDS cases has decreased in the last decade due to nationwide efforts to educate the public about guidelines for reducing the risk of SIDS; however, evidence indicates that certain segments of the population are failing to implement these guidelines, which include placing infants to sleep on their backs. This article offers specific suggestions on how Extension is ideally suited to influence education, intervention, and public policy efforts aimed at reducing the incidence of …

Evaluating Pork Producers' Acceptance Of Distance Education Media, Stephanie Decamp, Brian Richert, Wayne Singleton, Neal Vines Jun 2001

Evaluating Pork Producers' Acceptance Of Distance Education Media, Stephanie Decamp, Brian Richert, Wayne Singleton, Neal Vines

Journal of Extension

A booth was developed to expose pork producers to eight distance educational media. Booth survey results indicate producers had the greatest previous exposure to videotape. After exposure in the booth, producers were willing to try all media except chat rooms and multi-media kits. Producers (86%) prefer face-to-face educational programs to distance education. However, 87% of the producers indicated that distance education is the future for information access, and 84% of the producers felt that their questions could be adequately answered through distance education. These results suggest that exposure to distance education media is a limiting factor to the media's acceptance …

As with any other educational method, IMC needs to be viewed in a critical fashion. This article addresses the question, "What things seem to make effective IMC?" and presents some research-based recommendations for those using or developing IMC.

A Comparison Of The Semi-Adjustable Articulator And The Virtual Articulator By Centric Relation And Centric Occlusion Contacts, Donald Shane Witherow Jun 2001

A Comparison Of The Semi-Adjustable Articulator And The Virtual Articulator By Centric Relation And Centric Occlusion Contacts, Donald Shane Witherow

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The articulator as we know it has evolved since the late 1700's, however, it has not changed much in function since the 1970's. Our methods of determining contact information i.e., centric stops and pre-maturities also has not changed much beyond that of "carbon paper". With the advent of new computer technologies, dental models are now being placed into the virtual world through variations of image slicing and laser scanning. The purpose of this paper is to determine if the Occlusogram developed by OrthoCad is as accurate as common methods currently used to determine occlusal contacts.

Twenty dental students volunteered to …

Identification Of The Polar Flagellum Genes In Azospirillum Brasilense, Enid Thanna Mckinley Jun 2001

Identification Of The Polar Flagellum Genes In Azospirillum Brasilense, Enid Thanna Mckinley

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Azospirillum brasilenser, a nitrogen fixing rhizobacterium, can colonize plant roots and increase the yield of economically important cereals, such as rice and grasses. This organism has a mixed pattern of flagellation: a single polar flagellum for motility in liquid medium and lateral flagella which might be involved in motility across the root surface and or attachment to the root hairs of plants. Flagella dictate A. brasilense chemotactic ability and motility, which plays an important role in colonization of plant roots. However, nothing is known about the genes that code for the polar flagellum. To study the polar flagellum, different mutants …

Age Related Changes In Contractile Sensitivity To Cyclic Gmp And Intracellular Calcium Compartmentalization In Ovine Arteries, Surya Margono Nauli Jun 2001

Age Related Changes In Contractile Sensitivity To Cyclic Gmp And Intracellular Calcium Compartmentalization In Ovine Arteries, Surya Margono Nauli

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The study examines the hypothesis that maturation changes the ability of cGMP to produce cerebral vasodilatation and alters the relative intracellular calcium pool sizes in ovine arteries. In ovine basilars taken from near-term fetal and young adult sheep, 8- pCPT-cGMP relaxed potassium- and serotonin-induced tone with pD2 values of 4.4±0.1 and 4.9±0.1 (fetal basilar) and 4.0±0.1 and 4.7±0.1 (adult basilar), respectively. In fura-2 loaded arteries, 8-pCPT-cGMP significantly lowered increases in cytosolic calcium concentration induced by serotonin but not potassium regardless of age. When calcium sensitivity was calculated in the same arteries as the slope of the relation between calcium concentration …

Il-2 And Antisense Tgf-B1 Gene Therapy Of The H238 Tumor And Analysis Of Tgf-B Receptors, Azim Moiz Mohamedali

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-p) belongs to a family of immunosuppressive cytokines, capable of regulating macrophages, T, B and NK cells. We have detected the TGF-p transcript being synthesized by H238 cells. This is herpes simplex-Type2 transformed murine fibrosarcoma cell line. The amount of TGF-p formed/106 cells was >2000pg/ml. Previous attempts to control H238 tumorigenicity had sub-optimal efficacies. In addition, studies had shown that the FI238 cell line was not responsive to TGF-p. This project was an attempt to develop an improved modality to reduce H238 tumorigenicity and investigate potential abnormalities in expression of TGF-p receptors in the H238 cell line. …

Near Death Experiences And The Christian Gospel: Concord Or Conflict?, Kenneth Lance Tyler Jun 2001

Near Death Experiences And The Christian Gospel: Concord Or Conflict?, Kenneth Lance Tyler

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The near-death phenomenon has initiated a new debate over Jesus' and Paul's claim in the New Testament that the gospel message therein outlines the only way to salvation. Despite twenty-five years of writing and research by near-death (NDE) advocates the dispute continues not only over the disparity between the gospel and NOE but over the origin and meaning of the near-death experience itself. Initially it was medical and pharmacological questions that focused the discussions. More advanced theories are being offered suggesting that the right temporal lobe of the brain acts as a "circuit board" or gateway for a range of …

Covenantal Ethics: A Living System For Living Systems, Matthew D. Viel Jun 2001

Covenantal Ethics: A Living System For Living Systems, Matthew D. Viel

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Covenantal ethics is a living system for living systems. We humans are not simple, isolated individuals living stagnant, dead lives. Rather we are immersed in a complex system of living, glowing and developing interpersonal relationships with others. Philosophy in general and ethics in particular are often looked upon as dead or dormant entities. Covenantal ethics is neither. It is a living approach to the philosophy of ethics that recognizes the dynamic system in which we live. Our world recently welcomed a new millennium. We moved forward, leaving behind much of the old and eagerly anticipating what was to come. One …

Lies, Damn Lies And Public Protection: Corporate Responsibility And Breast Cancer Activism, Laura Potts Jun 2001

Lies, Damn Lies And Public Protection: Corporate Responsibility And Breast Cancer Activism, Laura Potts

Journal of International Women's Studies

Introduction:

The first world conference on breast cancer, held in Kingston, Ontario, in July 1997, provided a unique opportunity for activists, concerned about the possible links between breast cancer and the environment, to share their concerns in an international forum, with oncologists, radiologists, epidemiologists, survivors and alternative therapists. It also clearly exposed the fracture lines between competing discourses of risk and responsibility, between groups charged with a duty to protect and to care - health professionals, epidemiologists, statutory bodies, and those taking on those duties - generally activists, from environmental, feminist and survivor groups. These lines were even more clearly …

Migration And Cultural Change: A Role For Gender And Social Networks?, Sara R. Curran, Abigail C. Saguy Jun 2001

Migration And Cultural Change: A Role For Gender And Social Networks?, Sara R. Curran, Abigail C. Saguy

Journal of International Women's Studies

From the Introduction:

To incorporate the insights from the literature on gender and migration, we focus upon three key concepts that have emerged regarding the role of social networks, households, and communities for affecting migration processes. The three key concepts we interrogate are: “social embeddedness” (Portes and Sensenbrenner 1993), “circular and cumulative causation” (Massey 1990), and “relative deprivation” (Stark 1991). We propose considering these three concepts through the lens of a third area of research, the sociology of culture, and we draw upon ideas about identity formation, trust, and normative expectations. Our empirical examples come primarily from Thailand where we …

Mapping 'New' Geographies Of Religion: Politics And Poetics In Modernity, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This article reviews geographical research on religion in the 1990s, and highlights work from neighbouring disciplines where relevant. Contrary to views that the field is incoherent, I suggest that much of the literature pays attention to several key themes, particularly, the politics and poetics of religious place, identity and community. I illustrate the key issues, arguments and conceptualizations in these areas, and suggest various ways forward. These 'new' geographies emphasize different sites of religious practice beyond the 'officially sacred'; different sensuous sacred geographies; different religions in different historical and place-specific contexts; different geographical scales of analysis; different constitutions of population …

Fractionation & Segregation Of Suspended Particles Using Acoustic And Flow Fields, Nazhat Aboobaker May 2001

Fractionation & Segregation Of Suspended Particles Using Acoustic And Flow Fields, Nazhat Aboobaker

Dissertations

The fractionation of particles by size or by density has many applications in a variety of technologies. Decontamination and separation of fine sediments is useful in treating sediments. The application of acoustic standing wave fields for the fractionation and segregation of suspended particles was studied.

The above technology was implemented at the bench scale by building a Plexiglas chamber. Two ultrasound transducers were fixed to opposite sides of the chamber to generate the acoustic standing wave field. The technology was evaluated using silica dioxide (Si02) (1-5 ~tm) and silicon carbide (SiQ (5-20 ~tm) particle suspensions in deionized water. Due to …

Volume Change Behavior Of Clay Soils And The Effect On Discrete Fractures, Heather Ann Hall May 2001

Volume Change Behavior Of Clay Soils And The Effect On Discrete Fractures, Heather Ann Hall

Dissertations

This study examines the behavior of subsurface fractures in fine-grained soil such as clays in response to changing environmental conditions. Fractures serve as conduits for moisture transfer, which can lead to substantial shrinking and swelling of the surrounding fracture boundary soils. These volume changes, in turn, affect fracture geometry and moisture transmission rates. A new predictive model, termed the 'Fracture Volume Change Model' (FVC Model), has been developed to relate moisture transfer, soil volume change and associated changes in fracture aperture. The model assumes a discrete horizontal fracture in a laterally-infinite, saturated, expansive clay with rigid, outer no-flow boundaries and …
