Technology & Identityis Rapidly Accelerating Technologyeroding Our Sense Of Who We Are?, Barbara Molony

History

Silicon Valley is a unique place in a unique moment of time. To say that it exists within history seems obvious; what might be less apparent is that Silicon Valley also has come to define both the practice and the subject of history. History and the exciting technologies born and bred in Silicon Valley are intimately linked. These ties were highlighted in a remarkable series of events and presentations sponsored by the Center for Science, Technology, and Society (CSTS) in October 2001. This issue of STS NEXUS captures the insights of those presentations.

Dispute Resolution And International Law: The United Nations Dialogue Among Civilizations, Catherine Tinker Jul 2001

Dispute Resolution And International Law: The United Nations Dialogue Among Civilizations, Catherine Tinker

NYLS Journal of Human Rights

The United Nations Dialogue among Civilizations initiative for the Year 2001 may contribute another dispute resolution technique for the global community. Elements of negotiation, mediation, arbitration, and adjudication and legal principles relevant to dialogue are reviewed. Dialogue, understood as a daily aspect of human interaction on many levels and in many situations, may lead to relationship-building and long-term conflict avoidance. Dialogue leads to learning and understanding other perspectives and may result in wellaccepted resolution of misunderstandings and reduction of conflict. This article suggests that dialogue may be useful for lawyers, arbitrators, and judges as an alternative to other forms of …

Telling Tales Out Of School: Academic Novels And Memoirs By Women, Betty Krasne

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

The following article has some of the attributes of a relic. It was originally written for the old Forum for Honors, shortly before its demise. Therefore, the books and issues it discusses take on a different perspective now that the reborn Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council has offered to publish those articles stranded by the former publication's termination.

"The Worst Floods In History" Federal Government And The Floods Of 1944 In The Elkhorn River Basin, Todd Kerstetter

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Water has played a critical, even defining, role in the history of the American West. Typically, scarcity determined water's significance. Farmers descended of European stock found too little water in the West to continue their traditional agriculture. Battles linger to this day over water rights for irrigation and urban usage. In a less-examined phenomenon, excess water has shaped the otherwise arid Plains by influencing the relationship between humans and their environment. In Nebraska's Elkhorn River Basin, a steady history of flooding led humans to alter the basin in attempts to control or mitigate flooding. Record flooding in 1944 revealed the …

Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association

In early July, when I opened the Sunday New York Times, I was surprised to see a front- page article devoted to whether legal citations in court opinions should appear in text or be placed in footnotes. Before the end of the day— thanks to the modern miracle of e-mail and people so driven that they are online on Sundays—both Bryan Garner and Judge Richard Posner, each among the best writers the legal world has known, had agreed to write articles on this topic for Court Review. The next day, Justice Rodney Davis joined the group and the debate over …

Court Review: Volume 38, Issue 2 - Against Footnotes, Richard A. Posner

Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association

The obvious objection to footnotes is that they force the reader to interrupt the reading of the text with glances down to the bottom of the page. They prevent continuous reading. In doing so they make the reader work harder for the same information. In articles, which are (in law anyway) usually much longer than judicial opinions, and a fortiori in books, bringing citations into the text would elongate the text unduly. But opinions, as I say, usually are short; the two opinions of mine that Garner quotes from in his article are only 1,300 and 2,700 words respectively, while …

Court Review: Volume 38, Issue 2 - Extrajudicial Speech: Navigating Perils And Avoiding Pitfalls, William G. Ross

Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association

In its biting opinion, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia castigated Judge Jackson for giving media interviews and public speeches in which he made remarkably astringent remarks about Microsoft. Among his more colorful comments, the judge mused that Bill Gates had Napoleonic hubris and he likened the break-up of Microsoft to swatting a recalcitrant mule with a two-by-four. Among his more potentially prejudicial remarks were his speculation to reporters— before his order splitting Microsoft—that ‘a break-up is inevitable” and his post-trial comments disparaging the credibility of trial witnesses.

The Effects Of Sound Cue Characteristics On Overcoming Front/Back Localization Errors In A 3-D Auditory Display, Robert J. Ehmann Jul 2001

The Effects Of Sound Cue Characteristics On Overcoming Front/Back Localization Errors In A 3-D Auditory Display, Robert J. Ehmann

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this study was to investigate the performance effects of adding an additional sound cue characteristic to a 3-D auditory display sound stimulus to increase localization accuracy. Previous literature has provided evidence that localization accuracy for direct front and direct back regions is significantly worse than that of locations in the periphery for virtual 3-D auditory stimuli. In the study conducted, a highpass filter addition or a lowpass filter addition was compared to a "normal" condition for both the front and back locations. Results of the study showed that the best localization performance for the front location occurred …
