On The School Board's Hit List: Community Involvement In Protecting The First And Fourth Amendment Rights Of Public School Students, Patrick Richard Mckinney Ii Aug 2001

On The School Board's Hit List: Community Involvement In Protecting The First And Fourth Amendment Rights Of Public School Students, Patrick Richard Mckinney Ii

UC Law Journal

This Note examines public school students' Constitutional rights to due process, freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures, and freedom of speech in light of the numerous school shootings that have taken place nationwide during the past few years. It argues that Supreme Court stare decisis has gradually diminished student rights, effectively impeding students' ability to seek remedy for their Constitutional injuries in a court of law. Moreover, school administrators have begun implementing policies, such as zerotolerance, that inherently tend to cause infringement of student rights. Although safety in schools is a legitimate state interest, student rights do not need to …

Socially Defined "Pms", Lora J. Bertelsen

Theses and Dissertations

No agreed upon definition for “PMS” exists. This study was designed to explore the conceptualizations of the expression “PMS” held by college students. It was hoped that results would inform not only assessment and treatment of premenstrual disorders, but also the debate regarding inclusion in future diagnostic and statistical manuals of the American Psychiatric Association.

Participants included 47 college students recruited from Freshman English classes at a small university in the Midwestern United States. Thirty female and 17 male participants were primarily Caucasian (43), single (36), and heterosexual (45). Each participant completed an in-class essay, an adjective checklist, and a …

Colorado Professionals' Concerns, Abilities, And Needs For Land Use Planning, Andrew Seidl

Journal of Extension

Colorado professionals with agriculture and natural resource managing responsibilities were surveyed on issues of growth. Their greatest concerns were water quality, water quantity, and agricultural profitability. Of least concern were large lot, low-density development, affordable housing, and forestland conversion. Respondents reported the greatest knowledge of fee simple land purchases, zoning, and conservation easements, and the least knowledge of water banking or trusts, "bargain" lands sales, and moratoria. They indicated the greatest interest in an overview of land management tools, conservation easements, and public-private partnerships, and the least interest in educational programming related to moratoria, development timing, and housing land trusts.

Collection And Analysis Of Multispectral Magnetic Resonance Imaging Data Using A Clinical Imaging System, Thomas G. Servoss Aug 2001

Collection And Analysis Of Multispectral Magnetic Resonance Imaging Data Using A Clinical Imaging System, Thomas G. Servoss

Theses

As most radiologists would attest, the accuracy of pathology diagnosis is greatly increased by acquiring more information about the tissue in question. An innovative data acquisition technique has been developed that will do just that - gather more information about the tissues being studied. As each tissue type is composed of a unique arrangement of chemical components, each tissue exhibits a characteristic nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) frequency spectrum. Unfortunately, current clinical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems integrate the characteristic spectra of the tissue within a voxel to create a single signal for the voxel, thus throwing away what could be …

Quality Of Life As Defined By Chinese Americans With Disabilities: Implications For Rehabilitation Services, Nan Zhang Hampton, Vickie Chang Aug 2001

Quality Of Life As Defined By Chinese Americans With Disabilities: Implications For Rehabilitation Services, Nan Zhang Hampton, Vickie Chang

Institute for Asian American Studies Publications

We hypothesized that Chinese Americans with disabilities may remain culturally attached to their ancestors' homeland and this cultural attachment may have influences on the concept of Quality of Life (QOL). That is, QOL may be perceived, by Chinese Americans with disabilities, not only as an individual's satisfaction with his or her life, but also the person's fulfillment of his or her responsibilities to his or her family and community. Of course, this hypothesis needs to be examined. Such an investigation may provide rehabilitation counselors with insights into the meaning of QOL from the viewpoint of Chinese Americans with disabilities. It …

Green Electrochemistry. Examples And Challenges, Michael A. Matthews

Faculty Publications

Electrochemical methods have been proposed for synthesis of organic compounds, including conversion of CO2. Such methods may provide a basis for environmentally friendly and sustainable methods for chemical production. Nevertheless, electrochemical syntheses are not widely utilized. Several examples of ongoing research are presented that illustrate both the opportunities as well as the challenges associated with the utilization of electrochemistry for green chemical manufacturing.

A Model For Hiv/Aids Risk Behaviors Of Students In Armenia, Talin Babikian Aug 2001

A Model For Hiv/Aids Risk Behaviors Of Students In Armenia, Talin Babikian

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Without a cure in now its third decade, AIDS is a concern for both the medical and social science disciplines. Most at risk for a nationwide AIDS epidemic are developing countries, which often lack the necessary resources and knowledge to minimize the spread of the disease. There are an estimated 1500 HIV cases in Armenia, 81.5% of which occur in the 20-39 age group. Armenia’s current economic and political instability, increase in sexually transmitted infections (STI), prostitution, and injecting drug use, and the alarming incidence rates in neighboring countries amplify its risk for a national epidemic.

The goals of this …

A Children's Realm: An Experiment Using Life-Sized Manipulatives To Expand Exploring And Learning Opportunities For Children, Robert E. Drake Iii Aug 2001

A Children's Realm: An Experiment Using Life-Sized Manipulatives To Expand Exploring And Learning Opportunities For Children, Robert E. Drake Iii

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

In this synthesis I describe a "Children's Realm" in which middle school children can safely explore and interact with a variety of physical phenomena typically reserved for the adult world, such as building and driving a car. A Children's Realm is an experiment. It is an attempt to not only design, but engineer a unique environment for middle school students to explore and learn. It is based on providing the complex tools I feel children need to do this kind of learning on their own. These complex tools I call Life-Sized Manipulatives or simply LSM. I highlight the importance of …

New Teachers’ Perceptions Of Discipline-Related School Problems And Teacher Satisfaction, Amy L. Kavanaugh Aug 2001

New Teachers’ Perceptions Of Discipline-Related School Problems And Teacher Satisfaction, Amy L. Kavanaugh

Dissertations

Satisfaction The public is concerned with school safety because of recent school shootings resulting in multiple deaths. Educators are concerned that perceptions of school safety may affect new teacher attrition.

Three questions were examined in this study: (1) What is the trend of new teachers’ perceptions of discipline-related school problems? (2) Do new teachers’ perceptions of school problems vary by teacher gender, school level, size, location, and percentage of minority students?, and (3) Are new teachers’ perceptions of school problems related to their professional satisfaction?

National data gathered by the National Center for Education Statistics through the Schools and Staffing …

Sart, A Repressor Of Α-Hemolysin In Staphylococcus Aureus, Katherine A. Schmidt, Adhar C. Manna, Steven Gill, Ambrose L. Cheung Aug 2001

Sart, A Repressor Of Α-Hemolysin In Staphylococcus Aureus, Katherine A. Schmidt, Adhar C. Manna, Steven Gill, Ambrose L. Cheung

Dartmouth Scholarship

In searching the Staphylococcus aureus genome, we found several homologs to SarA. One of these genes, sarT, codes for a basic protein with 118 residues and a predicted molecular size of 16,096 Da. Northern blot analysis revealed that the expression of sarT was repressed by sarA and agr. An insertion sarT mutant generated in S. aureus RN6390 and 8325-4 backgrounds revealed minimal effect on the expression of sarR and sarA. The RNAIII level was notably increased in the sarT mutant, particularly in postexponential-phase cells, while the augmentative effect on RNAII was less. SarT repressed the expression of alpha-hemolysin, as determined …

Treatment Staff Burnout: Measuring The Effect Of Administrative Support In Adult Male Prisons, Brett Garland Aug 2001

Treatment Staff Burnout: Measuring The Effect Of Administrative Support In Adult Male Prisons, Brett Garland

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For the past few decades, criminologists have evaluated the success of treatment programs as the primary strategy to identify the best ways to lower offender recidivism. In doing so, they have repeatedly overlooked staff burnout as a potential barrier to rehabilitation. Because past research in human service agencies in general and prisons in particular has found organizational and administrative shortcomings to have the greatest impact on job strain and discomfort, this exploratory study examined the relationship between administrative support and the burnout of prison treatment staff. Burnout, the dependent variable, was measured by a modified version of an exhaustion index …

Fight The Power: Protest, Showdown And Civil Rights Activity In Three Southern Cities, 1960-1965., Kyle Thomas Scanlan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes the significant events of the Civil Rights Movement from 1960 to 1965, examining the campaigns of Albany, Georgia in 1962, Birmingham, Alabama in 1963, and Selma, Alabama in 1965. In the wake of the freedom rides of 1960-61, Martin Luther King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference was looking for a way to dramatically reveal the racial injustice of the South. Stumbling into a campaign in Albany, SCLC found thr right method in the use of nonviolent direct action. While Albany was a failure, it was this campaign that led to the campaigns of Birmingham and Selma which led …

Coal Mechanization And Migration From Mcdowell County, West Virginia, 1932-1970., Mark Myers Aug 2001

Coal Mechanization And Migration From Mcdowell County, West Virginia, 1932-1970., Mark Myers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The economy and population of McDowell County, West Virginia, drastically decreased between 1950 and 1970. The increased reliance of the coal industry, McDowell County's primary industry, on labor saving machinery resulted in a loss of employment opportunities. This study seeks to investigate the reasons for the reliance on coal and the results of the mechanization movement in the coal industry on McDowell County. Using production and employment data of two representative McDowell County coal companies, it is clear that the introduction of continuous mining machines, which combined the cutting and loading of coal into one step, allowed companies to mine …

This work has been created through a combination of my own ethnographic work, and an extensive literature review. I have attempted to interweave both my own experiences and those of others to …

Media Rape: Press Coverage Of Sexual Assault Cases, Megan M. Murphy Aug 2001

Media Rape: Press Coverage Of Sexual Assault Cases, Megan M. Murphy

Theses and Dissertations

In 1989, a female jogger was raped, beaten and left for dead in New York City’s Central Park. Two years later, a woman was attacked on a beach in Palm Beach, Florida. She reported to police that she had been raped. Both cases were covered extensively by the media, but the press treated the victims very differently. Throughout their analysis, reporters painted the Central Park jogger as an innocent victim, while the woman who accused Smith of rape was depicted as a deserving tramp.

Assuming a primarily qualitative approach, this research used frame analysis to examine The New York Times …

"Our Barbed Wire Ivory Tower": Republican And Irish Republican Army Prison Writing, 1973-1999, Lachlan E. Whalen

Theses and Dissertations

A critique of the notion that both prisons and prison literature are monolithic entities, this dissertation demonstrates the shaping power of individual historical moment and physical conditions of confinement upon the literary production of political incarceration in the North of Ireland. Though the writings of political prisoners like Gerry Adams, Roseleen Walsh, and Bobby Sands are separated only by a matter of a few years, the marked difference in their works is testament to the impact of place and individual prison regime upon each author. The material is approached in an eclectic fashion, with attention paid to the Hegelian dialectic …

The Design And Analysis Of A Wireless Lan Relayed Frame Protocol Extension, Jody A. Grassel Aug 2001

The Design And Analysis Of A Wireless Lan Relayed Frame Protocol Extension, Jody A. Grassel

Theses and Dissertations

Computing stations networked on wireless LANs (wLANs) typically have a limited range of mobility: the station must always be within an access point’s coverage area. If a station moves outside of that area, and if it is unable to locate another base station within its range to perform a handover of communication connectivity responsibility, then it will ex perience a disruption in network services until it migrates into the coverage area of another wLAN. Typical causes for such losses of service include station migration to outside of the wLAN’s coverage area, changing environmental conditions, and “holes” within the cumu lative …

Synthesis And Use Of Chiral Surfactants., Xiaoye Yang Aug 2001

Synthesis And Use Of Chiral Surfactants., Xiaoye Yang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It has been previously shown that micelles formed from surfactants with chiral head groups serve to induce a chiral reaction medium, leading to enhanced enantioselectivities in the reaction products. This utilization of chiral surfactants will offer an economical alternative to traditional chial solvents while simultaneously reducing organic waste. We have successfully dimethlated S-leucinol in an 85% yield, and have synthesized a hydrocarbon-based surfactant with this molecule as a head group. We have also formed polymeric surfactants that have polydimethylsiloxane as the hydrophobic portion with the (S)-dimethylleucinol as a head group. Tests of the solubility of these surfactants have been conducted. …

The Drug Scourge As A Hemispheric Problem, Barry R. Mccaffrey General Aug 2001

The Drug Scourge As A Hemispheric Problem, Barry R. Mccaffrey General

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Former Drug Czar General Barry McCaffrey, USA (Retired) argues that Colombia s 40 million citizens must not be deserted by their neighbors. Leaving the Colombians to deal in isolation with a pervasive drug problem will deeply affect all 800 million of us in the Western Hemisphere through addiction, violence, and corruption. Moreover, he argues that the United States and the entire international community must support a long-term commitment to Plan Colombia and to building cooperative multinational approaches to the tough drug-associated problems that face us all. This is an undertaking in which we all have an equal stake and an …

Jihadi Groups, Nuclear Pakistan, And The New Great Game, M. Ehsan Ahrari Dr. Aug 2001

Jihadi Groups, Nuclear Pakistan, And The New Great Game, M. Ehsan Ahrari Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

For the United States and other nations concerned with security in South and Central Asia, one of the most ominous trends has been the growing influence of Jihadist groups in Pakistan which feel obligated to wage holy war against everything that they perceive as non-Islamic. Their objective would be a Pakistani government similar to the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. The danger this would pose to regional stability and U.S. interests is clear. The author assesses Jihadi groups from the framework of a new "Great Game" for influence in Central Asia involving an array of states. He argues that, if this …
