Microcredit And The Rural Poor: A Review Of The Maharashtra Rural Credit Project, Raghav Gaiha Sep 2001

Microcredit And The Rural Poor: A Review Of The Maharashtra Rural Credit Project, Raghav Gaiha

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

An attempt is made to review the Maharashtra Rural Credit Project (MRCP)--a microcredit scheme--by focusing on the process of implementation and its implications for targeting, empowerment of women, and trade-off between coverage of the poorest and sustainability of this scheme. Attention is drawn to deficiencies in the design and implementation of this scheme that limit the participation of the poorest and the benefits accruing to them. Moreover, it is argued that there is a risk of overstating the trade-off between the coverage of the poorest and sustainability of the MRCP if these deficiencies are overlooked.

Evaluation Of Geomembranes Using An Ultrasonic Method, Nazli Yesiller, Sevil Sungur Sep 2001

Evaluation Of Geomembranes Using An Ultrasonic Method, Nazli Yesiller, Sevil Sungur

Civil and Environmental Engineering

An ultrasonic testing procedure was developed to evaluate geomembranes. The pulse-echo inspection technique was used on the surface of geomembranes without disturbing the material. The equipment required consists of a P-wave transducer, a pulser-receiver, and a signal acquisition system. Travel time of ultrasonic waves and waveform energy are measured to evaluate the condition of geomembranes. Laboratory tests were conducted to assess the effectiveness of the method. Defects that simulate installation damage and various in-service degradation conditions were induced on samples. The defects were identified with the ultrasonic method at a success rate higher than 98%. Changes in the thickness or …

Tin Can Tourist, Scott Hightower Sep 2001

Tin Can Tourist, Scott Hightower

Poetry

A world of history is a world of destinations and possibilities. In Tin Can Tourist Scott Hightower draws from a legacy larger than the limits of personal history, body, and brand. From the harsh Protestant landscape of his native central Texas to the pageantry of the historical architecture of St. Maria in Trastevere, Rome, he persues the limit of the poet. Where exactly does one begin and the world start? Hightower reflects a world containing AIDS and cancer, Caravaggio and van der Werff. Nature, interpersonal relationships, and the culture of the world—from simple to extraordinary—are all fair game. His partaking, …

Growing Asparagus, David F. Graper, Rhoda Burrows Sep 2001

Growing Asparagus, David F. Graper, Rhoda Burrows

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Asparagus is an ancient vegetable, having been cultivated for over 2000 years. An ancient Roman author, Cato the Elder, in 200 B.C. wrote detailed directions for growing asparagus that are close to current recommendations. There are a number of species, but only one, Asparagus officinalis L., is cultivated for food. Asparagus is a favorite spring vegetable, both for its earliness and its distinctive taste. Not only is it low in calories, asparagus is an excellent source of vitamin A and contains significant amounts of calcium, phosphorus, riboflavin, and vitamin C. Although commercial asparagus production in the United States is concentrated …

Structure Of The Rgrgs Domain Of P115rhogef, Zhe Chen, Clark D. Wells, Paul C. Sternweis, Stephen R. Sprang Sep 2001

Structure Of The Rgrgs Domain Of P115rhogef, Zhe Chen, Clark D. Wells, Paul C. Sternweis, Stephen R. Sprang

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

p115RhoGEF, a guanine nucleotide exchange factor for Rho GTPase, is also a GTPase activating protein (GAP) for G12 and G13 heterotrimeric Gα subunits. Near its N-terminus, p115RhoGEF contains a domain (rgRGS) with remote sequence identity to RGS (regulators of G protein signaling) domains. The rgRGS domain is necessary but not sufficient for the GAP activity of p115RhoGEF. The 1.9 Å resolution crystal structure of the rgRGS domain shows structural similarity to RGS domains but possesses a C-terminal extension that folds into a layer of helices that pack against the hydrophobic core of the domain. Mutagenesis experiments show that …
