Nebraska’S Rural Population: Is The Glass Half Empty Or Half Full?, Sam Cordes, Randolph L. Cantrell

Cornhusker Economics

Those interested and concerned about rural Nebraska often focus on population data. In recent months, the media have been very active in focusing on this issue, largely because of the release of the 2000 U. S. Census numbers. For the most part, media reports and analysis have painted a fairly bleak picture of what happened in rural Nebraska during the decade of the 1990s. In this short article we summarize how the recent Census data can be used to paint such a bleak picture and refer to this as “the glass is half empty” story. We then provide an alternative …

Display Medium Using Emitting Particles Dispersed In A Transparent Host, Michael Bass, Hans Jennsen

UCF Patents

This disclosure relates to a laser communication system which allows changing the direction of reception and transmission without external manipulation of the system container. The basic unit of the system is a narrow-band transmitting-receiving telescope apparatus which includes a rotating diffraction grating and an independently rotating stage with mounted combination of photodetector for reception and laser for transmission and a focusing system concentrating the beam reflected from the grating onto the photodetector of the combination or sending a beam from laser of the combination onto the grating. The selection of definite angles for signal transmission-reception is realized by corresponding rotation …

New Techniques For The Design Of Diffractive Optical Devices For Optical Communications And Networking, Pojamarn Pojanasomboon, Okay K. Ersoy Dec 2001

New Techniques For The Design Of Diffractive Optical Devices For Optical Communications And Networking, Pojamarn Pojanasomboon, Okay K. Ersoy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Three new techniques are proposed for the design of optical devices for various applications in optical communications and networking. The first algorithm shows that the nonperiodic grating-assisted directional coupler design can achieve not only the complete power transfer but also superior performances over the conventional periodic grating-assisted directional coupler in nonsynchronous waveguides. The second method is the newly proposed angular spectrum and beam propagation methods using the continuous and discrete sine transforms. This alternative approach is useful especially when the boundary conditions need to be zeroes, for example at the dielectric-metal interfaces. Lastly, the ranked phased-array method @PAM) helps achieve …
