A Comment On The Complementary Jurisdiction Of The International Criminal Court: Adding Insult To Injury In Transitional Contexts?, Jennifer J. Llewellyn Oct 2001

A Comment On The Complementary Jurisdiction Of The International Criminal Court: Adding Insult To Injury In Transitional Contexts?, Jennifer J. Llewellyn

Dalhousie Law Journal

The author examines the principle of complementarity on which the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court (ICC) is based. Unlike its predecessors, the International Criminal Tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda, the ICC can only take jurisdiction over a case when a state is unwilling or unable to investigate or prosecute. The Court is thus designed to complement the work of national criminal courts. This article assesses whether this admissibility standard will allow the ICC to complement the work of truth commissions like that of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission. It concludes that the prospect of an …

Terrorism Overview, Mti Report 01-14, Brian M. Jenkins Oct 2001

Terrorism Overview, Mti Report 01-14, Brian M. Jenkins

Mineta Transportation Institute

Recent global events make it clear that the threat of terrorism is one to be taken seriously. For those who are attempting to kill in quantity and kill indiscriminately, surface transportation offers the ideal target. Because of the public nature of mass transit, there is often little security with no checkpoints as is the case with airports. The practice of terrorism has moved in varying directions in recent years, depending upon different forms of transportation systems and venues of operation. On the positive side, terrorist attacks on commercial aviation have declined significantly after reaching a high point in the 1970s, …

Development Of An Electrotransformation Technique For Streptococcus Iniae And Preliminary Characterization Of The Hemolysin Associated With This Bacterium, Kimberly Ann Hahn Oct 2001

Development Of An Electrotransformation Technique For Streptococcus Iniae And Preliminary Characterization Of The Hemolysin Associated With This Bacterium, Kimberly Ann Hahn

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Streptococcus iniae is a gram-positive organism responsible for causing disease in both freshwater as well as saltwater fish. Every year fisheries lose fish by the tons due to diseases caused by this organism. In 1991, the first reported human case of disease associated with this organism was described. Since this initial case, there have been numerous other reported cases of S. iniae infections. This organism is a catalase negative, facultatively anaerobic organism that produces a capsule and when plated onto blood agar demonstrates β-hemolytic activity.

In this study, the relationship between the hemolysin produced by S. iniae and the lactate …

Evaluating The Judges In Baton Rouge, Susan E. Howell Oct 2001

Evaluating The Judges In Baton Rouge, Susan E. Howell

Survey Research Center Publications

The Baton Rouge Bar Association seeks to provide the public, lawyers, and the judges with some sort of evaluation of the judges in the Baton Rouge area. Since it is difficult for the public to obtain information on judges, the Bar Association relied on its own members and the members of the Louis Martinet Society to evaluate all judges, including city, state, and federal courts. Hopefully, the results will be useful to the public, the lawyers, and especially to the judges. Most judges can take satisfaction in the high regard with which they are held by the hundreds of lawyers …

Determinants Of Paternal Responsibility, Engagement, Accessibility, Suzanne Mischell Nangle Oct 2001

Determinants Of Paternal Responsibility, Engagement, Accessibility, Suzanne Mischell Nangle

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The current study was designed to examine several variables that may influence three areas of paternal involvement with young children. Specifically, 75 couples with children between the ages of 1 and 4 completed questionnaires that assessed beliefs and reported fathers' involvement in three areas of childcare described by Lamb, Pleck, Charnov, and Levine ( 1985). Specifically, the three areas of paternal involvement measured were interaction/engagement, accessibility, and responsibility. Based on a review of the literature, the following variables were hypothesized to influence fathers' involvement: gender-role beliefs, paternal competence in the parenting role, marital satisfaction, job stress, work-family conflict, conflict in …

Determination Of The Impact Of A Human Capital Decision Cost Model On The Economic Performance Measures Of A Technical Services Company, Jeffery A. Temple Oct 2001

Determination Of The Impact Of A Human Capital Decision Cost Model On The Economic Performance Measures Of A Technical Services Company, Jeffery A. Temple

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Human Capital has a major impact on cash flow management decisions in a Technical Services company. Decisions to hire or terminate employees to meet contract requirements affect the company's economic value. The objective of this research is to develop a model that assists management in establishing a starting point in making, as efficiently as possible, those decisions that impact employees' lives. To understand that impact, the operations and economic parameters of a Technical Services company are compared with those of a manufacturing company. This analysis establishes two · essential points for Technical Services organizations; first, that the capital investment decision …

Map Kinases In Cynomolgus Monkey Sperm Hyperactivation, Emily Nicole Haynes Oct 2001

Map Kinases In Cynomolgus Monkey Sperm Hyperactivation, Emily Nicole Haynes

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Mammalian sperm exhibit characteristic motility patterns, termed hyperactivated (HA) motility, associated with completion of capacitation. In cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis) sperm, this HA motility is dependent in vitro upon the addition of exogenous cyclic nucleotide mediators, caffeine and dibutyryl-cyclic adenosine monophosphate (dbcAMP). Previous reports have shown protein tyrosine phosphorylation to be an integral component of this caffeine- and cAMP-stimulated HA motility. This study investigated the involvement of the mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase-signaling cascade. Semen specimens were collected in Talp-HEPES medium from proven breeders via electroejaculation. After washing, sperm were incubated in the presence and absence of the MAP …

Life Study: A Collection Of Persona Poetry, Denise Louise Mcnelly Oct 2001

Life Study: A Collection Of Persona Poetry, Denise Louise Mcnelly

English Theses & Dissertations

In an attempt for both the author and readers to better understand the personae presented in "Life Study," this collection of verse emerged. Using the form of the persona poem, the author includes the voices of such diverse personae as one who experiences hang-gliding in an ethereal way, to a woman who sues an alcohol company for her husband's alcoholism, to a geographically-isolated youngster dealing with a society of which she is not a part, to one who has survived physical violence. In this way, "Life Study" allows readers particular glimpses into numerous and often astounding experiences and thoughts of …

A Phenomenological Case For The Family Farmer As An Environmental Steward, Jim Hanson Oct 2001

A Phenomenological Case For The Family Farmer As An Environmental Steward, Jim Hanson

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This phenomenological analysis concludes that the American family farmer is a steward of the environment in a way that the corporate farmer is not. As a study of consciousness, phenomenology recognizes that family farmers have more sensitive and less selective experience because of living in the farm environment. It draws from the first-hand accounts articulated by family farmers-accounts that reflect their firsthand and direct experiences of the farm environment. Although considered to be irrelevant by many scientists and statisticians, phenomenological accounts of direct experience are important starting points for the scientific study of farmers and their knowledge of environmental problems.

The State Goes Home: Local Hyper-Vigilance Of Children And The Global Retreat From Social Reproduction, Cindi Katz Oct 2001

The State Goes Home: Local Hyper-Vigilance Of Children And The Global Retreat From Social Reproduction, Cindi Katz

Publications and Research

In an early scene in The Terminator, the Cyborgian Arnold Schwarzenegger walks into an L.A. gun shop and asks to see the wares. The shopkeeper lays out Uzis, submachine guns, rocket launchers, and other sophisticated means of overkill, nervously understating, "Any one of these will suit you for home defense purposes." The situation is likewise in the growing child protection industry. In keeping with the shopkeeper's sly comment, these businesses feast on an all-pervasive culture of fear, while creating a mockery, alibi, and distraction out of what they are really about - to remake the home as a citadel through …

Foreign Representatives In U.S. Chapter 11 Cases: Filling The Void In The Law Of Multinational Insolvencies, Evan D. Flaschen, Anthony J. Smits, Leo Plank

Connecticut Journal of International Law

In 1850, with forty dollars' and a lot of hard work, Isaac Merritt Singer created "America's greatest invention," a revolutionary design for the sewing machine. He founded the Singer Sewing Machine Company in 1851, and in 1867 opened a factory in Scotland, making Singer the first American multinational manufacturing company.

In 1999, with little more than forty dollars in the bank, The Singer Company N.V., the successor in interest to the Singer Sewing Machine Company, was again responsible for a new invention, this time in the field of international insolvency. Singer and forty-six of its affiliates (collectively, "Singer") filed Chapter …

Exploring The Emergent Identities Of Future Physicians: Toward An Understanding Of The Ideological Socialization Of Osteopathic Medical Students, Lynn M. Harter, Kathleen J. Krone

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

This project brings contextual factors to the forefront of socialization research by investigating how medical ideology relates to the formation of the identities of students of osteopathic medicine. In particular, we investigate their attitudes toward, the role of communication in, and the expression of emotion in health care delivery. Through in-depth interviews with students about their vocational development experiences, we began exploring their emergent identities as future practitioners of osteopathic medicine. Three themes emerged from a constant comparative analysis of data, including (a) selecting osteopathic medicine, (b) encountering osteopathy, and (c) students’ emergent identities. These themes, and their respective subthemes, …

Genetic Locus Required For Antigenic Maturation Of Rhizobium Etli Ce3 Lipopolysaccharide, Dominik M. Duelli, Andrea Tobin, Jodie M. Box, V.S. Kumar Kolli, Russell W. Carlson, K. Dale Noel

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Rhizobium etli modifies lipopolysaccharide (LPS) structure in response to environmental signals, such as low pH and anthocyanins. These LPS modifications result in the loss of reactivity with certain monoclonal antibodies. The same antibodies fail to recognize previously isolated R. etli mutant strain CE367, even in the absence of such environmental cues. Chemical analysis of the LPS in strain CE367 demonstrated that it lacked the terminal sugar of the wild-type O antigen, 2,3,4-tri-O-methylfucose. A 3-kb stretch of DNA, designated as lpe3, restored wild-type antigenicity when transferred into CE367. From the sequence of this DNA, five open reading frames …

Interactive Distance Learning Effectively Provides Winning Sports Nutrition Workshops, Jennifer Ricketts, Sharon Hoelscher-Day, Gale Begeman, Linda Houtkooper

Journal of Extension

This study compared an interactive distance-education format and a face-to-face format for providing sports nutrition continuing education workshops for health care and education professionals. A collaborative team of state and county Cooperative Extension and a County Health Department faculty and staff conducted the study using The Winning Edge: Nutrition for Fitness and Sport curriculum. The results indicated that a well-designed distance-education format is as effective and acceptable as a face-to-face format for providing workshops. In addition, responses to 6-month follow-up evaluations indicated that the workshop contents were useful for providing sports nutrition education programs in workshop participants' communities.

Essential Tasks, Skills, And Decisions For Developing Sustainable Community-Based Programs For Children, Youth, And Families At Risk, Mary Banach, Paula J. Gregory Oct 2001

Essential Tasks, Skills, And Decisions For Developing Sustainable Community-Based Programs For Children, Youth, And Families At Risk, Mary Banach, Paula J. Gregory

Journal of Extension

Experienced grant writers suggest the only thing worse than writing a grant proposal is getting funded! For those with little or no experience in program development, the many decisions of running a grant-funded project are both overwhelming and costly. The effectiveness of those decisions ultimately affects a project's sustainability. This article draws on experiences from Cooperative Extensions Children, Youth and Families At Risk (CYFAR) projects in proposing a model for sustainable community-based programs. The model delineates five typical stages of program development, and the critical tasks, skills, core questions, and feedback loops essential at each stage of effective practice.

An Examination Of Rural Recycling Drop-Off Participation, Thomas W. Blaine, Kimberly D. Mascarella, Deanna N. Davis Oct 2001

An Examination Of Rural Recycling Drop-Off Participation, Thomas W. Blaine, Kimberly D. Mascarella, Deanna N. Davis

Journal of Extension

Recycling education programs have constituted an important component of Extension outreach in the past decade. The study reported here used a two-stage statistical modeling procedure to predict the characteristics of residents who participate in a recycling program and to explain frequency of visiting the drop-off sites. The results reveal that older respondents in large households in more remote sections of the community are more likely to use the drop-off centers than others. Those participants who show more satisfaction with the convenience and quality of the drop-off sites visit more frequently. An unintentional consequence was a spirited competition among the seven …

Content Analysis Of Media Coverage Of The 1995 Dietary Guidelines For Americans, Debra Palmer Keenan, Rayane Abusabha, Natalie G. Robinson Oct 2001

Content Analysis Of Media Coverage Of The 1995 Dietary Guidelines For Americans, Debra Palmer Keenan, Rayane Abusabha, Natalie G. Robinson

Journal of Extension

The study reported here examined the nature of the nutrition messages communicated by the media about the 1995 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Upon the release of the 1995 Guidelines, a mass media content analysis was conducted to determine the nature of the media messages communicated to the public. Media channels included were national and local newspapers, national television news and news type programs, magazines, and National Public Radio (NPR). Findings indicate that the Dietary Guidelines are not covered adequately by the media. Nutrition educators are encouraged to take a more active role in making their expertise available to the various …

National 4-H School Enrichment Survey, Keith G. Diem Oct 2001

National 4-H School Enrichment Survey, Keith G. Diem

Journal of Extension

School enrichment has become the predominant 4-H delivery mode, with 3.7 million youth reached annually. The study reported here examined how it and other modes are used and viewed by Extension staff. Long-term programs such as 4-H clubs have proven effective in helping youth develop life skills, but Extension staff devote efforts to school enrichment because of its efficiency in reaching diverse youth in large numbers and because it has helped develop credibility with community officials and formal education. Extension must carefully consider the purpose and consequences of diverting resources to short-term programs. This may require choosing between "numbers" and …
