Misplaced Marketing: Why Television Is The “Wrong” Environment For Public Service Advertising Campaigns, Joyce M. Wolburg
Misplaced Marketing: Why Television Is The “Wrong” Environment For Public Service Advertising Campaigns, Joyce M. Wolburg
College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications
Notes that research has shown that advertising efforts to promote social causes rarely reach meaningful levels of effectiveness. Points out that while the media provide the right emotional climate for advertising messages that encourage consumption, it follows that the media provide the wrong environment for messages that discourage consumption or other behaviors. Concludes that money spent might best be redirected to other prevention efforts that more directly accomplish the social program’s goals.

The "Risky Business" Of Binge Drinking Among College Students: Using Risk Models For Psas And Anti-Drinking Campaigns, Joyce M. Wolburg
College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications
To assist creators of public service announcements and anti-drinking campaigns, this study provides an in-depth examination of the risks of binge drinking from the perspective of college students. Using current risk models for guidance, key elements from the qualitative data in the study are addressed, including perceived risks and their severity, vulnerability to risks, self-efficacy, response efficacy, benefits from ritual functions, and other costs or benefits based on students' attitudes and beliefs. An integrated risk perception model is introduced. Student participants enumerated extensive risks; however, they generally felt invulnerable to the consequences. Most adopted a management style of “taking chances” …

Testing The Invariance Of The Transtheoretical Model Utilizing A Population Of Smokers, Rose Marie Ward
Testing The Invariance Of The Transtheoretical Model Utilizing A Population Of Smokers, Rose Marie Ward
Open Access Master's Theses
A crucial assumption in the development of a measure is that the measurement model is invariant. This means that the measurement model is the same in different populations and across different occasions. Utilizing data from a representative sample of smokers, we examined the invariance of the Decisional Balance Inventory and the Processes of Change. The sample consists of 4144 participants (44.3% male, 55.7% female, 95.7% White, mean age 40.7). After the number of factors for each scale was confirmed using Factor Analysis, the sample was partitioned into subgroups to test the invariance of the model. The scales were compared across …
La Conceptualización De La Cultura En La Obra De Sarmiento Y Sus Implicaciones Políticas Para La Formación De Una Identidad Cultural Argentina, Marta Belen Rodriguez Galan
La Conceptualización De La Cultura En La Obra De Sarmiento Y Sus Implicaciones Políticas Para La Formación De Una Identidad Cultural Argentina, Marta Belen Rodriguez Galan
Open Access Master's Theses

Study Of The Gender Representations Within The Aliens Series, Whitney Anspach
Open Access Master's Theses
This study employed a detailed examination of and comparison between and among each of the four films within the Alien series to explore and demonstrate distinct differences in gender representation in the series. This study has also determined that there exists a relationship between these differing gender representations and concurrent changes in the gender norms of films created for the primary target audience the United States with secondary international audiences. This determination was aided by a detailed examination of the gender norms in multiple genres including science fiction, action, horror, and hybrid mixtures of these three. In addition, gender representations …

Using Bibliotherapy To Increase Sharing In A Kindergarten Classroom, Carla Marie Eich
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The use of bibliotherapy with children as it relates to sharing behaviors is the focus of this study. The investigation examined whether reading books to children about sharing would increase sharing behaviors in a classroom. Previous work completed in this area reported positive results. This study sought to replicate and expand upon existing work to determine if bibliotherapy is a u 1 able classroom intervention to increase sharing behaviors. The following three hypotheses were made for this study: 1. Following treatment, the number of sharing behaviors of the experimental group will be significantly more than at baseline. 2. The experimental …
Multidisciplinary Team Decision-Making Practices In Iowa Schools, Debra S. Meyer
Multidisciplinary Team Decision-Making Practices In Iowa Schools, Debra S. Meyer
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The historical legislation mandating multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) in schools is well known. Relatively little attention has been directed toward either evaluating systematic processes that would lead to the desired outcome ,of better services to all students or educating team members in problem solving content and process. The purpose of the study was to examine the factors that influence problem solving outcomes and other aspects of service delivery in MDT settings. Team members' roles, problem solving steps, family involvement, and team building activities were measured by mailing a confidential Decision-Making Practices in Iowa Schools questionnaire to elementary principals (n = 114), …

The first consideration prior to seeding is to determine the present level of management being applied to the proposed site. Many sites will recover or improve without seeding if proper management is implemented. Soil is the primary natural resource and its conservation is the most important consideration in seedings.
Design, Synthesis And Antimicrobial Activity Of Novel Antimicrobial Peptides, Khaled Elsaid
Design, Synthesis And Antimicrobial Activity Of Novel Antimicrobial Peptides, Khaled Elsaid
Open Access Master's Theses
In the past decade, a large number of naturally occuring thiazole and oxazole-containing peptides have been isolated from microbial and marine origins. These peptides exhibit important antimicrobial, antiviral, and anticancer activities. Solid phase synthesis of peptides provides the methods to prepare and investigate novel compounds for possible use as antibiotics. Three combinatorial peptide libraries, library 1, an enantiomeric peptide library, library 2, with guanidinium, thiazole and benzothiophene side chains and library 3, designed from a template natural product, microcin Bl 7, were tested against Vibrio anguillarum (wild type), Escherichia coli (ZK 4) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae in zone …
Mediation And Adr: Insights From The Jewish Tradition, Robert A. Baruch Bush
Mediation And Adr: Insights From The Jewish Tradition, Robert A. Baruch Bush
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
Two initial points will provide some context for these remarks. First, my primary professional involvement has been not in legal practice as such, but in alternative dispute resolution ("ADR") and mediation, which has been my field of concentration over the last twenty-five years, both before and after coming to Hofstra Law School. Therefore, my comments will focus on how my view of this field has been affected by my religious tradition.
Second, the perspective reflected in these comments grows out of my own particular experience in relation to the Jewish tradition. Specifically, my involvement in Jewish traditional life and thought …

“Most energy conservation information is designed for homeowners, even though an increasing number of people are renting,” says Leona K. Hawks, Utah State University Extension housing specialist. “Many renters develop a short-timer mentality and don’t worry much about energy savings. However, utility bills do add up quickly so renters may wish to conserve on their energy use,” she advises.

The Dynamics Of Cultural Production In Ireland: Economic Strategy, Digital Technology And Public Policy Making, Ellen Hazelkorn
The Dynamics Of Cultural Production In Ireland: Economic Strategy, Digital Technology And Public Policy Making, Ellen Hazelkorn
Books/Book chapters
The last ten years has seen Ireland, now dubbed the ‘Celtic tiger’ of Europe, achieve an economic about-turn. A key element of this growth has been new technology. Irish policy makers have focused increasingly on a growth strategy led by the information and communications technologies (ICTs) as a means to leapfrog historic and geographic limitations of the earlier industrial revolution and ‘jump-start’ Irish economic growth. Taking advantage of rapid social structural changes, relatively high public investment/endorsement of education and advanced skills, and a ‘natural’ reservoir of creativity, that strategy has sought to market Ireland as an ‘information gateway’, an English-speaking …

Hate In Cyberspace: Regulating Hate Speech On The Internet, Alexander Tsesis
San Diego Law Review
The speed at which information can be spread throughout the United States and other countries has been greatly enhanced by the Internet. This computer-driven, technological medium consists of various modes of transmission, including discussion groups, interactive pages, and mail services. A wide variety of pictorial, auditory, and written information is available on the Internet. Persons with disparate goals can access and affect large audiences through it. Both those seeking social improvement and those promoting racist violence can now increase the magnitude, diversity, and location of their audiences. Persons advancing
democratic ideals and those inclined to exclusionary elitism can use e- …
Privatizing Social Security, Jerry W. Markham
Privatizing Social Security, Jerry W. Markham
San Diego Law Review
This Article will address the debate and discuss regulatory concerns that would arise with the creation of private social security accounts. As will be shown, the present system fails to provide real social security, and deprives those most in need of a retirement program of an opportunity to increase their wealth or to have a comfortable retirement. Shifting to a private system would be expensive, but could be accomplished through recognition of the benefits of private investments and through a program of tax credits and deductions. Existing regulatory requirements protect private social security account holders from fraud, as well as …
Which Public, Whose Interest? The Fcc, The Public Interest, And Low-Power Radio
Which Public, Whose Interest? The Fcc, The Public Interest, And Low-Power Radio
San Diego Law Review
Faced with legal challenges8 and, in 1998 alone, over 13,000 inquiries from people and groups interested in starting low-power stations, the government relented, and in January 2000, completed a process creating a new low-power FM (LPFM) service.9 In the space of two years, the FCC had gone from raiding and shutting down microradio stations to inviting applications for low-power broadcast licenses. Such a dramatic shift in policy could only come about through a reinterpretation of the public interest standard. Part III of this Comment continues by analyzing
the concept of the public interest that underlies the new LPFM service and …
