New Photochemical And Electrochemical Methods For The Degradation Of Pesticides In Aqueous Media. Environmental Applications, J. J. Aaron, Mehmet A. Oturan Jan 2001

New Photochemical And Electrochemical Methods For The Degradation Of Pesticides In Aqueous Media. Environmental Applications, J. J. Aaron, Mehmet A. Oturan

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The development of new electrochemical and photochemical methods for the decontamination of natural water containing significant concentrations of aromatic pesticides is described. The electrochemical method is based on the electro-Fenton process, i.e. the simultaneous reduction of O_{2} and Fe^{3+} ions. Hydroxyl (OH^{.}) radicals are electrosynthesized in aqueous solutions, followed by complete mineralization of the initial pollutants. The photochemical methods involve either a direct photodegradation reaction of pesticides by UV light, or indirect photodegradation processes including H_{2}O_{2} photolysis or photo-Fenton reagents (H_{2}O_{2}/ Fe^{3+} ). Examples of the application of these methods to chlorophenoxy acid herbicides and four aromatic pesticides (bendiocarb, pirimiphos-methyl, …

Modified Critical Correlations Close To Modulated And Rough Surfaces, Andreas Hanke, Mehran Kardar Jan 2001

Modified Critical Correlations Close To Modulated And Rough Surfaces, Andreas Hanke, Mehran Kardar

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

Correlation functions are sensitive to the presence of a boundary. Surface modulations give rise to modified near surface correlations, which can be measured by scattering probes. To determine these correlations, we develop a perturbative calculation in deformations in height from a flat surface. The results, combined with a renormalization group around four dimensions, are also used to predict critical behavior near a self-affine rough surface. We find that a large enough roughness exponent can modify surface critical behavior.

"Project Exile" And The Allocation Of Federal Law Enforcement Authority, Daniel Richman Jan 2001

"Project Exile" And The Allocation Of Federal Law Enforcement Authority, Daniel Richman

Faculty Scholarship

With each report of violent crime statistics (whether rising or falling) or of the latest firearms outrage, we hear the antiphony of the gun control debate. Advocates of increased federal regulation decry the inadequacies of a regime that permits relatively free access to firearms and argue that the availability of guns is itself a spur to more deadly violence. Advocates of minimal regulation, for their part, condemn measures that, they say, will primarily penalize law-abiding citizens, and instead call for more vigorous enforcement of existing laws, targeting "criminals," not their weapons. When the antiphony intrudes on funerals, the effect can …

Fear And Loathing Of Politics In The Legal Academy, William H. Simon Jan 2001

Fear And Loathing Of Politics In The Legal Academy, William H. Simon

Faculty Scholarship

In a recent lament about Bush v. Gore, Bruce Ackerman feared that the patent groundlessness of the opinion would convince many of a proposition he attributed to critical legal studies: that law is simply a form of politics.

This remark reflects two tendencies prominent at the Yale Law School in recent years: first, a preoccupation with a now extinct and never very successful movement of left legal academics, and second, a tendency to conflate this movement with the legal conservatism of Jusice Scalia and his collaborators at the University of Chicago and the Rehnquist Court.

These tendencies ride high …

An "Effective Death Penalty"? Aedpa And Error Detection In Capital Cases, James S. Liebman Jan 2001

An "Effective Death Penalty"? Aedpa And Error Detection In Capital Cases, James S. Liebman

Faculty Scholarship

On June 11, 2001, the United States of America executed Timothy McVeigh. Dwarfed among the many unspeakable evils that Mr. McVeigh wrought is a speakable one I will address here, namely, the so-called Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996 ("AEDPA").

Abbreviated, AEDPA's political history is as follows: In November 1994, the "Gingrich Congress" was elected on its Contract with America platform. One of the planks of that platform – one of the few that actually ended up passing Congress – was the so-called "Effective Death Penalty Act." That proposal had little to do with the death penalty and, …

The Benefits Of Professional And Youth Art In An Airport Community, Kathleen Thompson Jan 2001

The Benefits Of Professional And Youth Art In An Airport Community, Kathleen Thompson

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Although few would initially consider an airport a community, these sprawling sites of aviation technology do qualify according to the definition in the Wordsworth's Concise English Dictionary. Community: common possessions or enjoyment: people having common rights: a body of persons in the same locality: leading a common life: a common affinity. Certainly the thousands that enter daily any major hub share common possessions, rights, a shared locality, and an affinity or need for travel. More than a few frenzied business flyers might admit that their base airport is a more familiar location than their suburban or urban neighborhood.

Identifying The Probability Of An Accident Occurring With Suspected Unapproved Parts As A Contributing Factor, Brett J. Baker Jan 2001

Identifying The Probability Of An Accident Occurring With Suspected Unapproved Parts As A Contributing Factor, Brett J. Baker

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

The purpose of this study was to determine if aircraft accidents and incidents, which involve Suspected Unapproved Parts (SUPs), are a major threat to aviation safety. In order to make this determination, the study sought to establish the probability of such an event occurring. The Federal Aviation Administration's Office of System Safety provided general aviation accident and incident data for the period spanning 1987 to 1999. In an attempt to provide the most accurate results, the full sub-population was studied, and subsequently analyzed using descriptive statistics. SUPs were found to contribute to 0.008225 mishaps every 100,000 flight hours, approximately 1,928 …

Can Copyright Become User-Friendly? Review: Jessica Litman, Digital Copyright (2001), Jane C. Ginsburg

Faculty Scholarship

In this review, I will first briefly address Professor Litman's evocation of the copyright law-making process. Her discussion of legislative history presents a valuable and compelling account, especially for those unfamiliar with copyright law. Nonetheless, it is not a principal focus of this review. For those who read the Columbia Journal of Law & the Arts (many of whom may well be copyright lawyers), the most provocative portions of the book, to which I will devote most attention, are likely to be the chapters in which Professor Litman (a) reviews and challenges various metaphors for copyright policy (Chapter 5, "Choosing …

Berne Without Borders: Geographic Indiscretion And Digital Communications, Jane C. Ginsburg Jan 2001

Berne Without Borders: Geographic Indiscretion And Digital Communications, Jane C. Ginsburg

Faculty Scholarship

This lecture examines the role of borders in the Berne Convention at the time of the treaty's first passage in 1886, and today. The later 19th century was an era of increasing commerce and communication among countries whose domestic production and reproduction of works of authorship had vastly increased, thanks in part to new technologies, such as photography, lithography, and high-speed printing. But at that time, the frontiers between nations often frustrated authors' hopes for control over, or at least compensation for, the international exploitation of their works. Authors' rights ceased at their national boundaries; the world beyond foreboded not …

Transmutation Of Obect, Jiyong Lee Jan 2001

Transmutation Of Obect, Jiyong Lee

Theses

This thesis is the result of years studying art and design. I felt fortunate to be introduced to glass during the past two years. I spent most of the first year developing ideas, exploring process and avoiding functional and pragmatic issues. Those are important elements for designing an object but thinking about my own unique approach was more important. The other goal of the first year was gaining experience with glass as a new material. Before I started my second year, I recognized concepts that had been recurring in my works for the past few years. I found an inseparable …

An Analysis Of A Radio Frequency Sensor As A Means To Remotely Sense Selected Surface Topographies In An Agriculture Environment, Barry Michael Alexia Jan 2001

An Analysis Of A Radio Frequency Sensor As A Means To Remotely Sense Selected Surface Topographies In An Agriculture Environment, Barry Michael Alexia

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Remote sensing is the science and art of obtaining information about an object, area or phenomenon through the analysis of data acquired by a device that is not in contact with the object, area, or phenomenon under investigation. The remotely sensed data can be of many forms, including variations in force distribution, acoustic wave distribution, or electromagnetic energy distribution.Information thus acquired can be used for observing, monitoring, and studying planetary surfaces and environments.

Because there are many ways to acquire data about targets of interest, there are many types of remote sensors that can be used, including visible, infrared, and active …

OES Faculty Publications

A multidisciplinary research team has conducted a field-scale bacterial transport study within an uncontaminated sandy Pleistocene aquifer near Oyster, Virginia. The overall goal of the project was to evaluate the importance of heterogeneities in controlling the field-scale transport of bacteria that are injected into the ground for remediation purposes. Geochemical, hydrological, geological, and geophysical data were collected to characterize the site prior to conducting chemical and bacterial injection experiments. In this paper we focus on results of a hydrogeological characterization effort using geophysical data collected across a range of spatial scales. The geophysical data employed include surface ground-penetrating radar, radar …

Field Methodology For The Determination Of The Prevalence Of Giardia Cysts And Cryptosporidium Oocysts Drinking Water And Its Association To The Development Of Diarrheal Disease In The Transylvania Region Of Romania, Rick J. Bauer

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to analyze the drinking water of 69 individuals living in the Transylvania region of Romania for the presence of Giardia cysts and Cryptosporidium oocysts. The ultimate objective was to determine if a correlation exists between the presence and concentrations of these two protozoa and the reported frequency and average severity of diarrheal disease in the study group members.

To accomplish this goal, a collection, emulsion, concentration, labeling, and identification method had to be developed that could operate effectively in an international field setting. The protocol selected included the collection of samples using a compressed …

Historical Radiometric Calibration Of Landsat 5, Erin O'Donnell Jan 2001

Historical Radiometric Calibration Of Landsat 5, Erin O'Donnell

Theses

There hasn't been a rigorous study of Landsat 5's thermal band since 1985, the year after its launch. Nevertheless, those who utilize this thermal imagery have been using it under the assumption that the sensor is operating correctly. This research was done to show that the thermal band of Landsat 5, has been radiometrically stable over its lifetime. Also, this research attempted to determine what the calibration of the thermal band has been. This was done using various Landsat 5 images of the thermal bar in the Great Lakes that were taken over the lifetime of the satellite. The focus …

The Role Of Mentoring In Developing Professional And Personal Competencies For School Administrators, Marguerite Verble Shook Jan 2001

The Role Of Mentoring In Developing Professional And Personal Competencies For School Administrators, Marguerite Verble Shook

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

In the state of Georgia and across the nation there was a shortage of principals. A new supply of administrators was needed to guide education through the 21st century. These leaders needed updated knowledge and skills to address the needs of an educational system affected by educational reform. Effective leadership allowed administrators to view situations in both the eyes of management and leadership. A mentoring program for beginning administrators provided guidance in developing these skills and in recruiting and retaining individuals for these critical positions.

The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of a mentoring program for …
