High School Size, Achievement Equity, And Cost: Robust Interaction Effects And Tentative Results, Robert Bickel, Craig Howley, Tony Williams, Catherine Glascock Oct 2001

High School Size, Achievement Equity, And Cost: Robust Interaction Effects And Tentative Results, Robert Bickel, Craig Howley, Tony Williams, Catherine Glascock

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

… This article has two objectives. First, to determine if the size-by-socioeconomic status interaction effect proves robust across alternative regression model specifications, as it did across differing states. Second, to make a tentative judgment as to whether the equity gains associated with smaller schools are incompatible with the need for fiscal efficiency. ...

Temporary Anion States Of Selected Amino Acids, Kayvan Aflatooni, B. Hitt, Gordon A. Gallup, Paul Burrow Oct 2001

Temporary Anion States Of Selected Amino Acids, Kayvan Aflatooni, B. Hitt, Gordon A. Gallup, Paul Burrow

Paul Burrow Publications

Vertical attachment energies for the formation of low-lying temporary anion states of glycine, alanine, phenylalanine, tryptophan, and proline in the gas phase are reported using electron transmission spectroscopy. Electron attachment into the empty π* orbital of the –COOH group was observed in all the compounds. Temporary anion states associated with the side groups in phenylalanine and tryptophan are found to be stabilized with respect to those in the reference compounds toluene and indole, respectively, by approximately 0.2 eV. We attribute this to electrostatic effects and explore, using simple theoretical models, the extent to which such anion states could be further …

Two Different One-Dimensional Structural Motifs In The Same Coordination Polymer: A Novel Interpenetration Of Infinite Ladders By Bundles Of Infinite Chains, Badruz Zaman, Mark D. Smith, Hans Conrad Zur Loye Oct 2001

Two Different One-Dimensional Structural Motifs In The Same Coordination Polymer: A Novel Interpenetration Of Infinite Ladders By Bundles Of Infinite Chains, Badruz Zaman, Mark D. Smith, Hans Conrad Zur Loye

Faculty Publications

A coordination polymer with a novel structural motif
consisting of stacks of infinite ladders interpenetrated by
bundles of infinite chains is described; geometrical arguments
are made for the requirements that can lead to such
interpenetration as a function of ligand dimensions.

Evaluation Of Chemical Repellents For Reducing Crop Damage By Dickcissels In Venezuela, M. L. Avery, E. A. Tillman, C.C. Lauker Oct 2001

Evaluation Of Chemical Repellents For Reducing Crop Damage By Dickcissels In Venezuela, M. L. Avery, E. A. Tillman, C.C. Lauker

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

In Venezuela, lethal control of wintering Dickcissels (Spiza americana) is considered a threat to the species survival. To help farmers protect their rice and sorghum crops from depredations by Dickcissels and to minimize the killing of large numbers of these birds, alternative non-lethal crop protection measures are needed. To that end, the responses of captive Dickcissels to three bird-repellent chemicals applied to rice seed were evaluated. In one-cup feeding trials, treatments of methiocarb (0.05% g g-1, applied as Mesurol® 75% wettable powder) and anthraquinone (0.5%, applied as Flight Control® ) reduced consumption of rice by 70% …

Search For First-Generation Scalar And Vector Leptoquarks, V. M. Abazov, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration Oct 2001

Search For First-Generation Scalar And Vector Leptoquarks, V. M. Abazov, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration

Gregory Snow Publications

We describe a search for the pair production of first-generation scalar and vector leptoquarks in the ee j j and eν jj channels by the DO. Collaboration. The data are from the 1992–1996 pp̅ run at √s =1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. We find no evidence for leptoquark production; in addition, no kinematically interesting events are observed using relaxed selection criteria. The results from the ee j j and eν jj channels are combined with those from a previous DO. analysis of the νν jj channel to obtain 95% confidence level (C.L.) upper limits on the leptoquark …

Minority Discounts And Control Premiums In Appraisal Proceedings, Richard A. Booth Marbury Research Professor Of Law Oct 2001

Minority Discounts And Control Premiums In Appraisal Proceedings, Richard A. Booth Marbury Research Professor Of Law

Faculty Scholarship

In a merger, a stockholder often has a statutory right of dissent and appraisal under which the stockholder may demand to be paid fair value exclusive of any gain or loss that may arise from the merger itself. Most courts and commentators agree that a dissenting stockholder should ordinarily receive a pro rata share of the fair value of the corporation without any discount simply because minority shares lack control. In several recent cases, the courts have indicated that a minority stockholder is thus entitled to a share of the control value of the corporation even though the merger does …

Completeness Of Propositional Logic As A Program, Ryan Stansifer Oct 2001

Completeness Of Propositional Logic As A Program, Ryan Stansifer

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

The proof of completeness for propositional logic is a constructive one, so a computer program is suggested by the proof. We prove the completeness theorem for Łukasiewicz’ axioms directly, and translate the proof into the functional languages SML and Haskell. In this paper we consider this proof as a program. The program produces enormous proof trees, but it is, we contend, as good a proof of completeness as the standard mathematical proofs. The real value of the exercise is the further evidence it provides that typed, functional languages can clearly express the complex abstractions of mathematics.

When An "A" Is Not Enough: Analyzing The New York State Global History And Geography Exam, S. G. Grant Oct 2001

When An "A" Is Not Enough: Analyzing The New York State Global History And Geography Exam, S. G. Grant

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

… In this article, I analyze the new New York State Global History and Geography standards and tests using a set of social studies-specific criteria which inquire deeply into the implications for real instructional change. From that vantage, I argue that New York's policy efforts, while seemingly well-intentioned and reflective of surface-level change, fail to promote powerful teaching and learning in social studies. ...
