Measuring Performance In The Public Sector: An Examination Of Benchmarking Paramedic Response Times, Bruce J. Moeller Jan 2001

Measuring Performance In The Public Sector: An Examination Of Benchmarking Paramedic Response Times, Bruce J. Moeller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Measuring performance in the public sector has been a topic of heightened concern during the past decade. While enthusiasm remains high for its use, performance measurement has also been subject to increasing scrutiny. In this research, problems with definitional ambiguity and concerns of conscious errors in the reporting of performance are theorized to limit the usefulness of performance measurement and benchmarking. The research examined the use of "response time" as a key benchmark in the delivery of paramedic services in the State of Florida. The research used both quantitative analysis based on survey response data from 120 paramedic agencies and …

Mid-Frequency Vibration Analysis Of A T-Beam, Thomas. Fremiot Jan 2001

Mid-Frequency Vibration Analysis Of A T-Beam, Thomas. Fremiot

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This thesis describes a numerical technique for modeling the vibrational behavior of a complex structure in the mid-frequency range. The structure is divided into subsystems, and each subsystem is modeled using Finite Elements. The obtained results are then manipulated to model variations in the response due to nominal variations in the structure. Based on a Component Mode Synthesis representation, the calculations lead to a deterministic energy flow model. The model represents the deterministic dynamic behavior of the structure for mid frequencies. However, in mid frequencies, the response is sensitive to perturbations in the properties of the structure. An appropriate way …

Both of systems operate in the same frequency band, the Industrial Scientific Medical (ISM) band, which use a 2.4 GHz carrier frequency. According characteristic of system, multi-path effect are major concern for indoor propagation. A frequency sounding technique is introduced to determine characteristics of the multi-path signal. However, multi-path can not be evaluated directly; some parameters are measured to determine the effect of multi-path. Angles of arrival can be used …

Modeling The Forward Look Sonar, Guillaume. Barrault Jan 2001

Modeling The Forward Look Sonar, Guillaume. Barrault

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

A numerical model that simulates the operation of a Forward Look Scan Sonar (FLSS) has been developed in this thesis. The model discretizes the sonar-projected signal by a set of rays using a geometrical approach. Bending of the rays due to varying acoustic wave speed is neglected. Simulated raw sonar data are generated, and used as input in the sonar processing algorithms to generate sonar images. Using the model, the influence of, the most critical characteristics of the sonar, including phase variations among the channels, non-homogeneous channel amplitude, and the number of bad channels, on the quality of the sonar …

Narrating The Chronotope Of The Saint: Ordinary Time In The Novel, Eric Daniel Mason Jan 2001

Narrating The Chronotope Of The Saint: Ordinary Time In The Novel, Eric Daniel Mason

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

All narratives in which the human image is presented establish an interconnectedness of time and space, what Mikhail Bakhtin calls the chronotope. When Victor Hugo wrote Les Miserables, he drew upon a historical chronotope originating in the narratives that accompanied the spread of Christianity, and which found its purest distillate in the genre of hagiography---the narrating of the lives of saints. When the mode of sacred time established in the conventionally brief hagiologic narrative, which depended on a linear progression having unity with God as its end, is integrated into the extended form of the novel, it finds itself at …

Multiple-Period Supply Chain Contract Modeling With Dynamic Stochastic And Price-Elastic Demand, Qian-Nong. Gu Jan 2001

Multiple-Period Supply Chain Contract Modeling With Dynamic Stochastic And Price-Elastic Demand, Qian-Nong. Gu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

In this study we developed a supply chain contract model for multiple scheduling period with dynamic demand patterns of stochastic nature, and with elastic price structures. The model presented here combined and enhanced several supply chain contract models developed previously. It is unique in that it considered multiple periods, dynamic, stochastic and price-elastic demand patterns, and flexible order quantities. Using a linear demand price-elastic relation and normal distribution pattern, optimal solutions for minimum cost, maximum profit, price structure, and order policies for the entire supply chain were derived. Sensitivity analyses performed in this study gave a better understanding of relative …

Numerical Simulations Of The Wave Bottom Boundary Layer Over Sand Ripples, Thomas P. Pierro Jan 2001

Numerical Simulations Of The Wave Bottom Boundary Layer Over Sand Ripples, Thomas P. Pierro

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Surface gravity waves propagating in the nearshore produce an oscillatory freestream potential flow near the seabed and commonly cause regular two-dimensional sand ripples to be formed. The existence of the ripples causes complex turbulent flows to evolve in the boundary layer, which can dissipate significant energy from the surface waves. A time-dependent DNS model is used to solve the Navier-Stokes equations in three dimensions on a transformed curvilinear grid for specified wave parameters. When compared to smooth beds, simulations over wavy topographies demonstrate that turbulence is enhanced due to flow separation in the lee of the ripple crests. Shear instabilities …

Performance Evaluation Of A Ds/Cdma Packet Transmission System Under Rician Fading Channel Conditions, Christodoulos. Argyrides

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This thesis is concerned with the performance analysis of a DS/CDMA packet radio system under Rician fading channel conditions. Analytic expressions are derived for the probability density functions and cumulative distribution functions of the total signal-to-interference ratio when considering mixed-type of interference sources. The users are divided into two groups: those that apply closed-loop power control and those that apply open-loop power control. Four different scenarios of power control were studied. The outage probability is evaluated for the four different cases of power control. A packet transmission protocol with forward error correction capabilities is considered, and the probability density functions …

Statistical Analysis Of Dynamic Interdependence Patterns In The Cortex, Wilson A. Truccolo-Filho Jan 2001

Statistical Analysis Of Dynamic Interdependence Patterns In The Cortex, Wilson A. Truccolo-Filho

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This dissertation is an investigation of the sources of commonly observed event-related transients in statistical measures of interdependence: variance, cross-correlation, power spectrum density and coherence spectrum density time functions. These measures are often employed in the analysis of spatio-temporal interdependence patterns in neural activity. In order to understand the phenomenon, the origins of the variability of event-related responses are revisited. The time series of single trial cortical event-related potentials typically have a random appearance, and their trial-to-trial variability is commonly explained by the classic signal-plus-noise model, in which random ongoing background noise activity is linearly combined with a stereotyped evoked …

Subspace Detection And Scale Evolutionary Eigendecomposition, Spyros C. Kyperountas Jan 2001

Subspace Detection And Scale Evolutionary Eigendecomposition, Spyros C. Kyperountas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

A measure of the potential of a receiver for detection is detectability. Detectability is a function of the signal and noise, and given any one of them the detectability is fixed. In addition, complete transforms of the signal and noise cannot change detectability. Throughout this work we show that "Subspace methods" as defined here can improve detectability in specific subspaces, resulting in improved Receiver Operating Curves (ROC) and thus better detection in arbitrary noise environments. Our method is tested and verified on various signals and noises, both simulated and real. The optimum detection of signals in noise requires the computation …

Testing An Integrated Model Of Crime: Traditional And General Strain, Differential Association, And Control Theories, Michael K. Ostrowsky Jan 2001

Testing An Integrated Model Of Crime: Traditional And General Strain, Differential Association, And Control Theories, Michael K. Ostrowsky

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Theories of criminal behavior have been tested individually and in integrated models incorporating multiple theories. Using data from the National Youth Survey Wave VII (1987), an integrated model incorporating traditional strain, differential association, and control theories is tested. Results show that each theory alone is a significant predictor of criminal behavior. Also, the integrated model enhances explanatory power of criminal behavior, over that of each individual theory. General strain theory (GST) variables are then added into the integrated model. In fact, this thesis is the first study, using young adults, that tests for the effects of multiple GST variables on …

Transducer Design For Underwater Acoustic Communications Using The Finite Element Method, Jean-Philippe M J Jacquemin Jan 2001

Transducer Design For Underwater Acoustic Communications Using The Finite Element Method, Jean-Philippe M J Jacquemin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The behavior of radially polarized free-flooded ring (FFR) transducers is studied for application in underwater acoustic communications. Theoretical models are first presented. Then the finite element method (FEM) is introduced and a FEM model for the FFR transducer is proposed. Experimental data are collected and compared to the simulation results with good correspondence. A series of FEM simulations lead then to optimum geometrical parameters for a fine-tuned FFR transducer dedicated to underwater acoustic communications. Finally, stack transducers models and the piezocomposite technology are presented as possible improvement of the present transducer.

Using Geographic Information Systems To Produce Time Area Diagrams For The Clark Hydrograph Method, Michael Francis Kohler Jan 2001

Using Geographic Information Systems To Produce Time Area Diagrams For The Clark Hydrograph Method, Michael Francis Kohler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Methodologies in GIS are used to compute stream flows for a watershed in Northern California by implementing the Clark Hydrograph Method. GIS algorithms are used to produce time area diagrams with time of concentration formula. These methods are compared to a simulation in HEC-HMS with the dimensionless TAD equation and the ModClark Method. Each GIS method is used to estimate the hydrograph for a measured rainfall event. The accuracy of each of the methods is explored using the HEC objective function, mean squared error, and other statistical measures of correlation. Advantages and limitations of the GIS methodologies are examined and …

Using Color Image Processing Techniques To Improve The Performance Of Content-Based Image Retrieval Systems, Fabio Morais Costa Jan 2001

Using Color Image Processing Techniques To Improve The Performance Of Content-Based Image Retrieval Systems, Fabio Morais Costa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

A Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) system is a mechanism intended to retrieve a particular image from a large image repository without resorting to any additional information about the image. Query-by-example (QBE) is a technique used by CBIR systems where an image is retrieved from the database based on an example given by the user. The effectiveness of a CBIR system can be measured by two main indicators: how close the retrieved results are to the desired image and how fast we got those results. In this thesis, we implement some classical image processing operations in order to improve the average …

Wavelet-Based Detector For Underwater Communication, Branko. Petljanski Jan 2001

Wavelet-Based Detector For Underwater Communication, Branko. Petljanski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The need for reliable underwater communication at Florida Atlantic University is critical in transmitting data to and from Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV) and remote sensors. Since a received signal is corrupted with ambient ocean noise, the nature of such noise is investigated. Furthermore, we establish connection between ambient ocean noise and fractal noise. Since the matched filter is designed under the assumption that noise is white, performance degradation of the matched filter due non-white noise is investigated. We show empirical results that the wavelet transform provides an approximate Karhunen-Loeve expansion for 1/f-type noise. Since whitening can improve only broadband signals, …

The Impact Of Fine Sediment On Stream Macroinvertebrates In Urban And Rural Oregon Streams, Raymond S. Hoy Jan 2001

The Impact Of Fine Sediment On Stream Macroinvertebrates In Urban And Rural Oregon Streams, Raymond S. Hoy

Dissertations and Theses

Urbanization, often characterized by high impervious surface area, can result in excessive inputs of fine sediments into urban streams. Excessive fine sediments can blanket the stream bed filling the interstitial space in the substratum, which may have adverse effects on stream biota. A field survey was conducted in Oregon urban and non-urban basins to investigate the relationship between fine sediments and stream macroinvertebrates. Physical, chemical, and biological data were collected from 59 stream sites in two urban and two rural streams. The stream sites fulfilled a continuous sediment gradient, which ranged from a low of 2% of fine sediment in …
