Evaluation Of Bond Graph Based Object Oriented Approach To Determination Of Natural Frequencies Of Packaging System Elements, Vladimir Jaram Jan 2001

Evaluation Of Bond Graph Based Object Oriented Approach To Determination Of Natural Frequencies Of Packaging System Elements, Vladimir Jaram

Theses

Packaged items passing through distribution system encounter vibrations. It needs to be examined what happens to an object, packaged or unpackaged, in the distribution environment when it is subject to outside vibrations, so that we may predict its behavior resulting from distribution vibrations. To prevent product loss from both static and dynamic forces encountered in distribution, corporations are turning in increasing numbers to services of package engineering. This work evaluates the application of Bond Graphs Based Object-Oriented Approach to Determination of Natural Frequencies of Packaging System Elements. Using the Bond Graph, a model of the Package-product system under testing was …

Enumeration Of Small Triangle Free Ramsey Graphs, Robert Getschmann Jan 2001

Enumeration Of Small Triangle Free Ramsey Graphs, Robert Getschmann

Theses

In 1930, a paper by Frank Plumpton Ramsey entitled "On a Problem of Formal Logic" appeared in the Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society. Although the impetus of this paper was one of mathematical logic, a far reaching combinatorial result was needed by Ramsey to achieve his objective. This combinatorial result became known as Ram \sey's Theorem. One of the combinatorial structures which was developed during the study of Ramsey's Theorem is that of a Ramsey graph. A Ramsey graph, denoted (k,l,n,e), is defined as an undirected graph that contains no cliques of size k, no independent sets of size …

The Theory Of Tort Doctrine And The Restatement Of Torts, Keith N. Hylton Jan 2001

The Theory Of Tort Doctrine And The Restatement Of Torts, Keith N. Hylton

Faculty Scholarship

The lack of detailed implications and general failure to come to grips with important features of tort doctrine have been substantial shortcomings in the dominant positive theory framework of Holmes and Posner. I extend the dominant framework below to enable it to justify various intentional tort doctrines, and the specific form and allocation of strict liability rules within tort law. After developing the positive framework, I apply it to the Restatement (Third) of Tort Law. The theory explains many of the detailed provisions and commentary of the Restatement, and identifies one area in which the Restatement (Third) seems inconsistent with …

Tying Law And Policy: A Decision-Theoretic Approach, Keith N. Hylton, Michael Salinger Jan 2001

Tying Law And Policy: A Decision-Theoretic Approach, Keith N. Hylton, Michael Salinger

Faculty Scholarship

This paper offers a decision theoretic framework for analyzing tying law, and presents a critical assessment of post-Chicago tying theory. The decision theoretic framework takes into account the likelihood of judicial error in the application of rules and the costs of such error. We use the decision theoretic framework to assess the proper legal rules regarding tying and technological integration. Three general themes run throughout much of our analysis. First, the per se rule against tying simply has no economic foundation. Second, while the post-Chicago literature established the theoretical possibility of anticompetitive tying, one must know the frequency of anticompetitive …

Analysis Of Inorganic Materials Using Advanced Nmr And Nqr Techniques, Anthony Adrian Mrse Jan 2001

Analysis Of Inorganic Materials Using Advanced Nmr And Nqr Techniques, Anthony Adrian Mrse

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Several advanced solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) techniques have been applied to inorganic materials of commercial interest. The specific techniques applied to each system were chosen to solve specific obstacles which impeded the flow of industrial science.

First, the dispersion of brominated flame retardants in polymers is monitored using pulsed 81Br NQR (nuclear quadrupole resonance) techniques. The NQR spectrometer consists of a homemade NMR console and an automatically tuned loop-gap resonator probe. The two factors which affect the 81Br NQR transition frequencies of brominated aromatics are: electron-donating and withdrawing substituents on the ring …

Analysis Of Near-Infrared Dye-Labeled Sanger Sequencing Fragments With Gel Electrophoresis Using The Time-Resolved Flourescence Lifetime Indentification Methods, Suzanne Jeanel Lassiter Jan 2001

Analysis Of Near-Infrared Dye-Labeled Sanger Sequencing Fragments With Gel Electrophoresis Using The Time-Resolved Flourescence Lifetime Indentification Methods, Suzanne Jeanel Lassiter

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The research presented in this dissertation involves the identification of sequencing fragments with time-resolved methods. For this application, near-infrared heavy-atom tricarbocyanine dyes were developed in our laboratory, which can be excited with a single laser and emission collected using a single detection channel. The dyes have four spectroscopically unique, but relatively short lifetimes that can be altered by the intramolecular heavy-atom they contain. The work described here involves the optimization of dye-primer chemistry for preparing Sanger sequencing reactions for longer reads and the optimization of the separation matrix for capillary gel electrophoresis that produces favorable statistical analysis of the aforementioned …

Artin-Schreier Families And 2-D Cycle Codes, Cem Guneri Jan 2001

Artin-Schreier Families And 2-D Cycle Codes, Cem Guneri

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

We start with the study of certain Artin-Schreier families. Using coding theory techniques, we determine a necessary and sufficient condition for such families to have a nontrivial curve with the maximum possible number of rational points over the finite field in consideration. This result produces several nice corollaries, including the existence of certain maximal curves; i.e., curves meeting the Hasse-Weil bound. We then present a way to represent two-dimensional (2-D) cyclic codes as trace codes starting from a basic zero set of its dual code. This representation enables us to relate the weight of a codeword to the number of rational …

Numerical Simulations Of Dynamical Mass Transfer In Binaries, Patrick Michael Motl Jan 2001

Numerical Simulations Of Dynamical Mass Transfer In Binaries, Patrick Michael Motl

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

We present results from investigations of mass transfer instability in close binary star systems. By unstable mass transfer we mean the exchange of material where the response of the binary to the initial Roche lobe overflow causes the donor to loose even more material. Our work is guided by approximate arguments that dictate the stability boundaries for binary star systems. To proceed further one must explicitly treat extended mass and velocity distributions that are both nitially, and through their subsequent evolution in time, self-consistent. In this dissertation, we present the first three-dimensional, fully self-consistent treatment of mass transfer in close …

Are We Buyers Or Hosts? A Memetic Approach To The First Amendment, Jeffrey E. Stake Jan 2001

Are We Buyers Or Hosts? A Memetic Approach To The First Amendment, Jeffrey E. Stake

Articles by Maurer Faculty

The First Amendment is often analyzed using the metaphor of the marketplace of ideas. Making use of memetic analysis, this article suggests that ideas should not be treated as inert products that we choose but as living things that sometimes exert some influence over their environment. Some of the ideas are more adept at surviving than others, and the ones that survive will not necessarily be good for humans. To account for the ability of some memes to replicate dangerously, the First Amendment should be read to allow governments to punish a speaker who advocates or threatens physical injury (other …

Evaluation Of In Situ Bioremediation Approaches In Meeting International Standards For Organic And Residual Metals Toxicity In Soils, Jason Allan Mcdonald Jan 2001

Evaluation Of In Situ Bioremediation Approaches In Meeting International Standards For Organic And Residual Metals Toxicity In Soils, Jason Allan Mcdonald

LSU Master's Theses

Drilling fluids and muds are an essential component of the rotary drilling process used to drill for oil and gas on land and in offshore environments. However, the bioaccumulation of petroleum contaminated soils/drilling mud due to oil and natural gas exploration has posed a major environmental concern due to its prolonged environmental persistence and its leachability below the rhizosphere. The main objectives of this research were: (i) To assess initial toxicity of drilling mud and related contaminated soils from an agricultural setting in Galliano, Sicily (Phase one) and (ii) To develop a low intervention bioremediation approach using bioplug technology to …

The Synthesis Of Deuterated Arylamine Dna Adducts For Use In The Development Of An Isotope Dilution Lc/Ms/Ms Method, Philip Dmitri Olsen Jan 2001

The Synthesis Of Deuterated Arylamine Dna Adducts For Use In The Development Of An Isotope Dilution Lc/Ms/Ms Method, Philip Dmitri Olsen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Polycyclic aromatic amines (arylamines) are a class of chemical carcinogens that are prevalent in environmental and industrial settings. In order to study the mechanism of their toxicity a quantitative and qualitative detection method was developed to measure the C8-adenine adducts of benzidine and 2-aminofluorene in DNA samples. To do this a novel synthetic method using a palladium catalyst was developed to prepare authentic and deuterated arylamine adducts to serve as standards. These standards were then used to develop a high performance liquid chromatography, electrospray, tandem mass spectrometry, isotope dilution, detection method. To demonstrate the validity of this method two spike …

Patent Law In The Age Of The Invisible Supreme Court, Mark D. Janis Jan 2001

Patent Law In The Age Of The Invisible Supreme Court, Mark D. Janis

Articles by Maurer Faculty

This article examines the permanence of the U.S. Supreme Court's retreat to the peripheries of patent law after the creation of the Federal Circuit, and explores the roles that the Supreme Court might imagine for itself in contemporary patent law. For discussion purposes, the article describes two hypothetical models for Supreme Court decisionmaking in patent cases: an aggressive interventionist model and an extreme non-interventionist model. After considering the shortcomings of both models, the article proposes an intermediate, managerial model. The managerial model rejects the proposition that the Court should intervene in patent cases to correct perceived substantive errors in Federal …

The Multiplicities Of A Dual-Thin Q-Polynomial Association Scheme, Bruce E. Sagen, John S. Caughman Iv

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Let Y=(X,{Ri}1≤i≤D) denote a symmetric association scheme, and assume that Y is Q-polynomial with respect to an ordering E0,...,ED of the primitive idempotents. Bannai and Ito conjectured that the associated sequence of multiplicities mi (0≤i≤D) of Yis unimodal. Talking to Terwilliger, Stanton made the related conjecture that mi≤mi+1 and mi≤mD−i for i<D/2. We prove that if Y is dual-thin in the sense of Terwilliger, then the …

Wholes And Parts In General Systems Methodology, Martin Zwick Jan 2001

Wholes And Parts In General Systems Methodology, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Reconstructability analysis (RA) decomposes wholes, namely data in the form either of set-theoretic relations or multivariate probability distributions, into parts, namely relations or distributions involving subsets of variables. Data is modeled and compressed by variablebased decomposition, by more general state-based decomposition, or by the use of latent variables. Models, which specify the interdependencies among the variables, are selected to minimize error and complexity.

Meeting The Challenge Of Dynamic User Requirements Using Data-Driven Techniques On A 4gl-Database Environment, Christopher Bolan Jan 2001

Meeting The Challenge Of Dynamic User Requirements Using Data-Driven Techniques On A 4gl-Database Environment, Christopher Bolan

Theses : Honours

Accompanying the ever-growing reliance on computers within contemporary organisations, the task of software maintenance is, increasingly, becoming a resource burden. The author has identified that there is a need for proven techniques to allow the modelling of flexible/changing user requirement, to enable systems to cope with requirements creep without suffering major code change and associated down-time from rebuilds of the database. This study ascertains the applicability of extension to current data modelling techniques that allows innate flexibility within the data model. The extension of the data model is analysed for potential benefits in the provision of such a dynamic/flexible base …

Teaching Practices Which Enhance Rhythm Development In Junior Primary Students : Case Studies In The South West Region Of Western Australia, Natalie Oddy

Theses : Honours

This thesis has arisen from a desire to enhance the benefits of musical development, in particular, rhythm, for children in junior primary classrooms. Music plays an important role in the overall development of the child as it ''aids a child's development in other areas such as overall academic achievement, ability to concentrate, creative and artistic expression, social skills and emotional stability" (Parkinson, 1989, p. 3). Therefore music education plays an important part in the academic curriculum. The researcher selected rhythm as the element of music to focus on as it is "the most basic element of music" (Latham and Sadie, …

Change Of Support Correction In Mineral Resource Estimation, Marek J. Janas Jan 2001

Change Of Support Correction In Mineral Resource Estimation, Marek J. Janas

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The success of any mining operation greatly, if not entirely, depends on the accuracy of prediction of recoverable mining reserves. However, prior to mining, knowledge about the distribution of the Selective Mining Unit (SMU) is limited. The SMU represents the volume on which extraction of ore takes place and on which recoverable mining reserves are based. Realistic recoverable reserve estimates can be obtained from the grade-tonnage curve that corresponds to the unknown distribution of the SMU rather than to the distribution of exploration sample data. In general, if the reserve calculation, at the given cut-off grade, is based upon exploration …
