Applying The Transtheoretical Model Of Change To Stress Management Among Adolescents: Development And Validation Of Decisional Balance And Confidence Measures, Leanne M. Mauriello Jan 2001

Applying The Transtheoretical Model Of Change To Stress Management Among Adolescents: Development And Validation Of Decisional Balance And Confidence Measures, Leanne M. Mauriello

Open Access Master's Theses

The negative physical and psychological health consequences of stress are a significant and prevalent concern for our society. This study proposes using the Transtheoretical Model to increase stress management behaviors among adolescents. As a first step in doing so, measures of decisional balance and self-efficacy were developed on a pilot sample of 317 ninth and tenth graders from a public, New England high school. Using a split-half cross-validation procedure, exploratory and confirmatory analyses produced two, internally consistent instruments. The resulting decisional balance measure includes 4 items to measure the pros of practicing stress management and 4 items to measure the …

How Can A Science Teacher And Non-Science Teacher Effectively Collaborate?, Robert J. Kime Jan 2001

How Can A Science Teacher And Non-Science Teacher Effectively Collaborate?, Robert J. Kime

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

Team teaching in an earth science classroom between a special education and a regular teacher can prove to be challenging, especially when the special education teacher is new to the teaching profession and does not have a background in science. Couple this with a regular education teacher that has never co-taught a class and classroom situations that are neither efficient nor productive are created. This creates frustration, resentment, and low self esteem. An accurate record of our daily education lives would reveal that there existed high levels of frustration toward on another, the curriculum, and the students. Our roles were …

Origin Of Silicic Volcanic Rocks In Central Costa Rica: A Study Of A Chemically Variable Ash-Flow Sheet In The Tiribí Tuff, R. S. Hannah, T. A. Vogel, L. C. Patino, G. E. Alvarado, W. Perez, Diane R. Smith Jan 2001

Origin Of Silicic Volcanic Rocks In Central Costa Rica: A Study Of A Chemically Variable Ash-Flow Sheet In The Tiribí Tuff, R. S. Hannah, T. A. Vogel, L. C. Patino, G. E. Alvarado, W. Perez, Diane R. Smith

Earth and Environmental Geosciences Faculty Research

Chemical heterogeneities of pumice clasts in an ash-flow sheet can be used to determine processes that occur in the magma chamber because they represent samples of magma that were erupted at the same time. The dominant ash-flow sheet in the Tiribí Tuff contains pumice clasts that range in composition from 55.1 to 69.2 wt% SiO2. It covers about 820 km2 and has a volume of about 25 km3 dense-rock equivalent (DRE). Based on pumice clast compositions, the sheet can be divided into three distinct chemical groupings: a low-silica group (55.1–65.6 wt% SiO2), a silicic …

Cellular Senescence: Ex Vivo P53-Dependent Asymmetric Cell Kinetics., Lakshmi Rambhatla, Shirley A. Bohn, Patrizia B. Stadler, Jonathan T. Boyd, Ronald A. Coss, James L. Sherley

Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers

Although senescence is a defining property of euploid mammalian cells, its physiologic basis remains obscure. Previously, cell kinetics properties of normal tissue cells have not been considered in models for senescence. We now provide evidence that senescence is in fact the natural consequence of normal in vivo somatic stem cell kinetics extended in culture. This concept of senescence is based on our discovery that cells engineered to conditionally express the well-recognized tumor suppressor protein and senescence factor, p53, exhibit asymmetric cell kinetics. In vivo, asymmetric cell kinetics are essential for maintenance of somatic stem cells; ex vivo, the same cell …

Water Distribution Modeling, Thomas M. Walski, Donald V. Chase, Dragan A. Savic

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Engineering Mechanics Faculty Publications

To effectively use water distribution models, the engineer must be able to link knowledge of basic hydraulic theory and the mechanics of the program with that of the operation of real-world systems. Water Distribution Modeling does just that.

Written by industry experts, it provides a practical resource for engineers and modelers that goes well beyond being a how-to guide for typing data into a computer program. It contains straightforward answers to common questions related both to modeling and to distribution systems in general.

This textbook walks the practicing engineer or student through the modeling process from start to finish — …

Feminists Doing Ethics, Peggy Desautels, Joanne Waugh Jan 2001

Feminists Doing Ethics, Peggy Desautels, Joanne Waugh

Philosophy Faculty Publications

We offer this volume as a contribution to the ongoing conversation that goes under the name of "feminist ethics." This conversation took an exciting and interesting turn recently at the Feminist Ethics Revisited Conference; many of the essays in this volume articulate ideas and analyses first presented there.1 The term feminist ethics was used broadly at this conference- as it is again here-to refer to the perspectives on women 's experience that come into view at the intersections of ethics, politics, philosophy, and literature. Earlier generations of philosophers-both male and female-have found that the experiences of women fit neither easily …

A Unified Approach To Dynamic Modeling Of High Switching Frequency Pwm Converters, Christopher J. Iannello Jan 2001

A Unified Approach To Dynamic Modeling Of High Switching Frequency Pwm Converters, Christopher J. Iannello

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation will present the development of a unified approach for dynamic modeling of the PWM and soft-switching power converters. Dynamic modeling of non-linear power converters is very important for the design and stability of their closed loop control. While the use of equivalent circuits is often preferred due to simulation efficiency issues, no unified and widely applicable method for the formulation of these equivalents exists.

A review of conventional modeling technique via the method of state-space averaging will be carried out. Complete development of the averaged, equivalent circuit models for the nonlinear power switch/diode combination in modem power converters …

Spatial Distribution Of Phosphorus In Fluvial Sediments From The James River Basin, Sw Missouri, Briain Fredrick

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Degraded ·water quality in the James River Arm of Table Rock Lake, southwest Missouri has raised concerns about sources and transport of nutrients, especially phosphorus, in the James River Basin. Sections of the James River Basin have been identified as having excessive nutrient problems on the Missouri Department of Natural Resources 303d list and ranked fifth in the state for water quality improvements. Understanding the sources and transport patterns of phosphorus in the James River is necessary to evaluate contamination problems and the effectiveness of management efforts to reduce phosphorus inputs to the lake. This study uses bed sediments to …

Spatial Patterns And Floodplain Contributions Of Mining-Related Contaminants In Chat Creek Watershed, Southwest Missouri, Jimmy Trimble Jan 2001

Spatial Patterns And Floodplain Contributions Of Mining-Related Contaminants In Chat Creek Watershed, Southwest Missouri, Jimmy Trimble

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Past mining activities have left a legacy of water quality problems in the Tri-State Mining District. Contemporary environmental risks stem from the release of lead and zinc from mine tailings previously dispersed far downstream in alluvial deposits as well as abandoned tailings piles. This study examines mining-related heavy metal contamination in the Chat Creek Watershed. Chat Creek drains the area near Aurora, Missouri on the eastern edge of the Tri-State District where mining occurred from 1886 to about 1930. This study identifies the spatial distribution of metal contamination in fluvial sediments and quantifies the role of bank erosion as a …

Spatial Assessment Of Nonpoint Phosphorus Sources Using Streambed Sediment Monitoring In The Kings River Basin, Nw Arkansas, Jason W. White Jan 2001

Spatial Assessment Of Nonpoint Phosphorus Sources Using Streambed Sediment Monitoring In The Kings River Basin, Nw Arkansas, Jason W. White

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

This study of the Kings River Basin provides a watershed-scale assessment of streambed sediment-Phosphorus (P) and its sources on the landscape. The Kings River drains into Table Rock Lake where surface algal blooms have concerned water scientists and disrupted summer tourism. There are questions about how sediment loads, widespread poultry and cattle operations, and sewage treatment plants are affecting water quality. Previous water quality studies across the U.S. have generally evaluated watercolurnn P. In contrast, few studies have used streambed sediment monitoring to detect P levels at a watershed-scale, and none have been attempted in the Kings River Basin. Sediment …

Scintillation Behind The Collecting Lens Of A Receiver, Clarissa A. Fleming Russell Jan 2001

Scintillation Behind The Collecting Lens Of A Receiver, Clarissa A. Fleming Russell

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

One of the negative effects that a laser beam experiences as it propagates through the atmosphere is intensity fluctuations or scintillation. Because scintillation-- as it pertains to laser radar and laser satellite communication systems-- is the main subject of this research, the assumption of an optical element ( such as a Gaussian lens) along the propagation path in front of the detector is valid. The mathematical addition of optical elements to the propagation path is treated using the ABCD ray matrix method. The expression for scintillation is derived, analyzed, and numerically calculated for positions to the left and right of …

The Design And Implementation Of Sustainable Plant Diversity Conservation Program For Alpine Meadows And Pastures, Johann Baumgärtner, Josef Hartmann Jan 2001

The Design And Implementation Of Sustainable Plant Diversity Conservation Program For Alpine Meadows And Pastures, Johann Baumgärtner, Josef Hartmann

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The paper describes the design and implementation of a plant biodeversity conservation program that was developed under funding and time constraints for diverse ecological, social, and institutional environments. The biodiversity program for alpine meadows and pastures located in the Swiss Canton of the Grisons is used as an example. The design of the sustainable program relied on existing legislation, accounted for limited ecological knowledge and expertise, and considered biodiversity as a commonpool resource. The trend to intensified cultivation of restricted areas required fast action, while the sustainability of the program design had to take into account institutional diversity. Fifteen habitats …

Kinetics Of Proteolyic Enzymes Monitored Online With Mass Spectrometry, Jennifer L. Rutherford Jan 2001

Kinetics Of Proteolyic Enzymes Monitored Online With Mass Spectrometry, Jennifer L. Rutherford

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

On-line reaction monitoring using electrospray ionization mass spectrometry was investigated with the goal of kinetically distinguishing the isomeric amino acids leucine and isoleucine. Leucine and isoleucine are isomers of identical mass (113.0946 Da) which are impossible to distinguish by their mass-to-charge ratios. These isomers are a source of ambiguity when sequencing peptides with exoproteases and mass spectrometry. Here we investigated the kinetics of on-line enzymatic reactions involving exoproteases for differentiating between leucine and isoleucine.

The kinetics of the stepwise exopeptidase degradation of 12 leucine/isoleucine isomeric peptides was monitored in real-time with a Finnigan Mat LCQ with an electrospray ionization source. …

The Atlantic Sea Scallop Fishery In The U.S.And Canada: A Natural Experiment In Fisheries Management Regimes, Robert Repetto Jan 2001

The Atlantic Sea Scallop Fishery In The U.S.And Canada: A Natural Experiment In Fisheries Management Regimes, Robert Repetto

Yale School of the Environment Publications Series

The Atlantic sea scallop fisheries in the U.S. and Canadian offshore waters provide a natural experiment in fisheries management regimes. Starting in 1986, in side by side areas of George’s Bank, Canada adopted a rights-based approach while the U.S. continued with effort controls. Analysis of their experiences shows that the resource has been better maintained in Canada with lower fishing effort, that the Canadian fishing industry has become more prosperous and innovative relative to that in the U.S., and that the Canadian co-management regime is more cooperative. These results suggest that systematic evaluation of actual experience with rights-based fishery management …

Bioirrigation Modeling In Experimental Benthic Mesocosms, Yoko Furukawa, Samuel J. Bentley, Dawn L. Lavoie Jan 2001

Bioirrigation Modeling In Experimental Benthic Mesocosms, Yoko Furukawa, Samuel J. Bentley, Dawn L. Lavoie

Journal of Marine Research

Burrow irrigation by benthic infauna affects chemical mass transfer regimes in marine and estuarine sediments. The bioirrigation facilitates rapid exchange of solutes between oxygenated overlying water and anoxic pore water, and thus promotes biogeochemical reactions that include degradation of sedimentary organic matter and reoxidation of reduced species. A comprehensive understanding of chemical mass transfer processes in aquatic sediments thus requires a proper treatment of bioirrigation. We investigated bioirrigation processes during early diagenesis using laboratory benthic mesocosms. Bioirrigation was carried out in the mesocosms by Schizocardium sp., a funnel-feeding enteropneust hemichordate that builds and ventilates a U-shaped burrow. Interpretation of the …

Size-Selective Downward Particle Transport By Cirratulid Polychaetes, David H. Shull, Michie Yasuda Jan 2001

Size-Selective Downward Particle Transport By Cirratulid Polychaetes, David H. Shull, Michie Yasuda

Journal of Marine Research

The deposition of surficial sediments many centimeters below the sediment-water interface due to the reworking activities of organisms is a potentially important but easily overlooked process in marine sediments. This kind of downward particle transport is difficult to observe in the laboratory or in the field but it has important consequences for bioturbation rates and sediment geochemistry. It is also much more likely to be size dependent than other sediment-mixing mechanisms, such as conveyor-belt feeding, and may also explain some subsurface maxima observed in sediment chemical profiles. We examined the mechanisms behind downward particle transport in Boston Harbor. Laboratory observations …

Geostrophy Via Potential Vorticity Inversion In The Yucatan Channel, J. Ochoa, J. Sheinbaum, A. Badan, J. Candela, D. Wilson Jan 2001

Geostrophy Via Potential Vorticity Inversion In The Yucatan Channel, J. Ochoa, J. Sheinbaum, A. Badan, J. Candela, D. Wilson

Journal of Marine Research

It has become common practice to measure ocean current velocities together with the hydrography by lowering an ADCP on typical CTD casts. The velocities and densities thus observed are considered to consist mostly of a background contribution in geostrophic balance, plus internal waves and tides. A method to infer the geostrophic component by inverting the linearized potential vorticity (Pv) provides plausible geostrophic density and velocity distributions. The method extracts the geostrophic balance closest to the measurements by minimizing the energy involved in the difference, supposed to consist of Pv-free anomalies. The boundary conditions and the …

Diffusion In A Lattice-Automaton Model Of Bioturbation By Small Deposit Feeders, Bernard P. Boudreau, Jae Choi, Filip Meysman, Fréderique François-Carcaillet

Journal of Marine Research

The mixing of 210Pb and tagged particles is examined in a lattice-automaton model for bioturbation containing small deposit feeders. The values of the biodiffusion coefficient, DB, calculated using typical biological parameter values, i.e., size, abundance, feeding and locomotion rates, are similar to those expected from marine sediments of a given sedimentation rate. Most biological parameters appear to exert primarily linear effects on DB values, while most nonlinearities seem to be model artifacts or failures of the assumptions in the basic DB model. The model highlights the importance of ingestion-egestion, over simple particle displacement, as an …
