Business Protocol: Assessing Student Knowledge, Jerry Moorman, Tim Hatten
Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology
This paper presents the results of research undertaken to determine the level of business protocol knowledge possessed by a cross-section of students at a small liberal arts college in Western Colorado. The research was pedagogical in nature and designed to provide data for use in designing an upper division undergraduate course in business protocol. For purposes of the research, Business Protocol was defined as a code prescribing strict adherence to correct etiquette and precedence in situations affecting professional business environments. Etiquette knowledge was measured in situational areas the researchers felt would impact the success of a business venture. Areas included: …

Zr-Containing 4,4'-Oda/Pmda Polyimide Composites Parts I And Ii, Marvin Illingsworth, J. Betancourt, Liling He
Articles
The objective of this research is to improve the atomic oxygen resistance of KaptonTM, a polyimide (PI) made from pyromellitic acid dianhydride (PMDA) and 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA), while retaining or enhancing the desirable properties of the pure polymer. Toward this end, zirconium-containing complexes and polymers were used to make composites and blends. Tetra(acetylacetonato)zirconium(IV), Zr(acac)4, which is commercially available, was identified as the best zirconium-containing complex for enhancing the atomic oxygen resistance of polyimide composites of the 10 complexes screened. Films prepared from the commercially-available polyamic acid (PAA) of PMDA-ODA (DuPont) have good uniformity, flexibility, and tensile strength. A 24-layer 10% (mol) …

We have demonstrated a route to epitaxial Pb(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O3 on (001) Si that exhibits a uniform piezoelectric response down to nanoscale levels through the utilization of an insulating, single-crystalline SrTiO3 transition layer. These structures, which were grown by a combination of molecular-beam epitaxy and off-axis magnetron sputtering, have a surface roughness of <5 Å, with piezoelectric microscopy measurements revealing a piezoelectric coefficient of ~50 pm/V that is switchable down to sub-100-nm dimensions.

Algebraic Isomorphisms And Spectra Of Triangular Limit Algebras, Allan P. Donsig, David R. Pitts, S. C. Power
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
We show that the spectrum of a triangular regular limit algebra (TAF algebra) is an invariant for algebraic isomorphism. Combining this with previous results provides a striking rigidity property: two triangular regular limit algebras are algebraically isomorphic if and only if they are isometrically isomorphic. A consequence of spectral invariance is a structure theorem for isomorphisms between limit algebras.
The proof of the main theorem makes use of a characterization of the completely meet irreducible ideals of a TAF algebra and a dual space formulation of the spectrum.

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications
The Stock Island tree snail, Orthalicus reses reses, went extinct in its native range in the Florida Keys in 1992. Fortunately, O. r. reses has been introduced elsewhere and further reintroductions are currently planned. Before these reintroductions are implemented, it is important to try and determine which factors were most likely to have caused the decline and extinction. While habitat destruction was probably the ultimate reason why there were so few tree snails, it is likely that an interaction of habitat fragmentation and the invasion of an exotic predator caused the final decline that lead to the extinction in …

The red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta Buren) is an aggressive, non-indigenous species that is a threat to native biota in the southeastern United States. We determined the effect of S. invicta on loggerhead shrike (Lanius ludovicianus L.) abundance and investigated a possible mechanism of impact, which is a reduction in insect prey availability. We used a fire ant bait (hydramethylnon) to reduce fire ant populations on one randomly chosen member of each of five pairs of 202-ha study areas in the Texas coastal Bend region, and also measured shrike relative abundance and a volumetric index of insect …

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications
The red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren (hereafter referred to as imported fire ant), long considered a regional problem, is receiving renewed attention nationwide, with infestations found in Arizona, Maryland, Nevada, New Mexico, and Virginia (Mitchell 1996). Recently, infestations discovered in several regions of California caused great public concern (Brennan 1999, Schrader 1999). Initially, infestations appeared to be isolated in almond groves in Kern County; presumably these infestations originated from bee hives transported interstate for the purpose of pollinating crops. Separately, ornamental plants arriving in Las Vegas, NV, were infested with fire ants, and records showed that the point …

Current and future energy use from burning of fossil fuels and clearing of forests for cultivation can have profound effects on the global environment, agriculture, and the availability of low-cost, high-quality food for humans. Individual farmers and consumers are expected to be affected by changes in global and regional climate. The agricultural sector in both developing and developed areas needs to understand what is at stake and to prepare for the potential for change wisely.
Despite tremendous improvements in technology and crop yield potential, food production remains highly dependent on climate, because solar radiation, temperature, and precipitation are the main …

Designing Adaptive Low-Dissipative High Order Schemes For Long-Time Integrations, Helen Yee, Bjorn Sjögreen
United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications
A general framework for the design of adaptive low-dissipative high order schemes is presented. It encompasses a rather complete treatment of the numerical approach based on four integrated design criteria: (1) For stability considerations, condition the governing equations before the application of the appropriate numerical scheme whenever it is possible. (2) For consistency, compatible schemes that possess stability properties, including physical and numerical boundary condition treatments, similar to those of the discrete analogue of the continuum are preferred. (3) For the minimization of numerical dissipation contamination, efficient and adaptive numerical dissipation control to further improve nonlinear stability and accuracy should …
Nonlethal Methods Of Examining Fish Stomach Contents, Jan F. Kamler, Kevin L. Pope
Nonlethal Methods Of Examining Fish Stomach Contents, Jan F. Kamler, Kevin L. Pope
Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications
Several nonlethal methods have been developed to determine the stomach contents of fish, including gastroscopes, tubes, stomach suction, stomach flushing, emetics, forceps, and chronic fistulas. By reviewing the literature on this subject, we found that the effectiveness (ability to remove all stomach contents) of the different methods depends on size, age, species of fish, and the size of the food items in the stomach. Overall, various methods of stomach flushing were the most effective method of recovering stomach items from a variety of fishes. Mechanized pressure appeared to be the most efficient method of stomach flushing for most large fishes. …

Assessment Of Outputs From Smith-Root Model-5.0 Gpp And Model-7.5 Gpp Electrofishers, Kevin L. Pope, Brian E. Van Zee, Michael C. Mayo, Mohammed Rahman
Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications
We evaluated the outputs from eight Smith-Root electrofishers (two factory-rigged model-5.0 GPP boats, four biologist-rigged model-5.0 GPP boats, and two biologist-rigged model- 7.5 GPP boats), using an oscilloscope to determine the actual waveforms (voltage as a function of time), current, and power produced for various settings. Differences were found in average power outputs among the six model-5.0 GPP electrofishing boats. In terms of average power output, biologist-rigged electrofishing boats using generators and control boxes purchased from Smith-Root were as or more effective than those rigged by Smith-Root. However, factory-rigged boats generally contained additional safety features that should be considered when …

Inventory Of Parks Division Lands For Threatened And Endangered Species Habitats And Exemplary Natural Communities, Steven B. Rolfsmeier
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts
The Nebraska Natural Heritage Program is responsible for environmental review of state projects, including those on Parks division properties, to determine if they may impact state-listed threatened and endangered species. In addition, the Program maintains a statewide database on natural communities and rare and imperiled species. This information is used to inform conservation decision-making, including land management decisions, with a goal of conserving Nebraska’s flora and fauna, our natural legacy. The two main objectives of this inventory project were first to improve the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s knowledge of threatened and endangered species and their potential habitat on Parks …

Remote Sensing Of Biotic Effects: Zebra Mussels (Dreissena Polymorpha) Influence On Water Clarity In Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron, Judith W. Budd, Thomas D. Drummer, Thomas F. Nalepa, Gary L. Fahnenstiel
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
In this study, Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) remote sensing reflectance (Rrs), imagery from 1987–1993 is used to study changes in water clarity before and after zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) were discovered in Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron. Spatial and temporal trends in the data indicate distinct and persistent increases in water clarity in the inner bay after the first large recruitment of zebra mussels in the fall of 1991. The pre-Dreissena imagery show that turbidity in the inner bay was influenced by the Saginaw River discharge in spring, biological production (plankton) in summer, and …

Changes In Diet And Body Condition Of Lake Whitefish In Southern Lake Michigan Associated With Changes In Benthos, Steven A. Pothoven, Thomas F. Nalepa, Philip J. Schneeberger, Stephen B. Brandt
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
We evaluated the long-term trends of the benthic macroinvertebrate community (1980–1999) and biological attributes of lake whitefish Coregonus clupeaformis (1985–1999) in southeastern Lake Michigan. We also determined what food types were important to lake whitefish in an area where the amphipod Diporeia had not yet declined in 1998 and how the diet of lake whitefish changed as Diporeia declined during 1999–2000. Zebra mussels Dreissena polymorpha invaded the study area in 1992; Diporeia began to decline in 1993 and was nearly absent by 1999. The body condition of lake whitefish decreased after 1993 and remained low thereafter. The length at age …

Evaluation Of Operational Ssm/I Ice-Concentration Algorithms, Walter Meier, Michael Van Woert, Cheryl Bertoia
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
The United States National Ice Center (NIC) provides weekly ice analyses of the Arctic and Antarctic using information from ice reconnaissance, ship reports and high-resolution satellite imagery. In cloud-covered areas and regions lacking imagery, the higher-resolution sources are augmented by ice concentrations derived from Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSMII) passive-microwave imagery. However, the SSMII-derived ice concentrations are limited by low resolution and uncertainties in thin-ice regions. Ongoing research at NIC is attempting to improve the utility of these SSMII products for operational sea-ice analyses. The refinements of operational algorithms may also aid future scientific studies. Here …

Recent Declines In Benthic Macroinvertebrate Densities In Lake Ontario, Stephen J. Lozano, Jill V. Scharold, Thomas F. Nalepa
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
Surveys of benthic macroinvertebrates conducted in Lake Ontario during 1994 and 1997 revealed recent declines in populations of three major taxonomic groups: Oligochaeta, Sphaeriidae, and Diporeia spp. (Amphipoda), with the most drastic reductions occurring in the latter. Results from sediment measurements were used to classify deepwater sediments into three habitat zones. Densities of all three taxa declined in the shallowest (12–88 m) of the sediment zones between 1994 and 1997; the greatest changes in density were observed for Diporeia, which declined from 3011 to 145 individuals·m–2, and for total benthic macroinvertebrates, which declined from 5831 to 1376 …

Modeling Reptile And Amphibian Range Distributions From Species Occurrences And Landscape Variables, Geoffrey M. Henebry, Brian C. Putz, James W. Merchant
United States Geological Survey: Publications
An international symposium in October 1999 demonstrated the state of the art in modeling species occurrences (Scott et al. 2001). One clear message from the symposium was the broad diversity of approaches that constitute the state of the art. No single method excels, largely because of the very particular and local nature of the problem. Organisms both influence and respond to their local environment; thus, the same species may key in on different resources in different landscapes. Furthermore, modeling methods vary widely in their "transparency," which can inhibit transportability or robustness.
In order to provide an analytical modeling framework that …

At-Satellite Reflectance: A First Order Normalization Of Landsat 7 Etm+ Images, Chengquan Huang, Limin Yang, Collin Homer, Bruce K. Wylie, James E. Vogelmann, Thomas Defelice
United States Geological Survey: Publications
Regional Landsat applications often rely on clear and near cloud-free images. With the spectral value being represented by digital number (DN), however, such images contain substantial noises. A significant proportion of such noises can be normalized by converting the DN to at-satellite reflectance value. Being physically based and ready to automate, the conversion method can serve as a first order normalization of Landsat 7 images, making it possible to derive land surface information from such images more consistently.

INTRODUCTION
The Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics (MRLC) consortium was initiated in early 1990s to address the need for consistently developed national and regional land cover data (Loveland and Shaw, 1996). Through this consortium, a 1992-vintage National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD) was developed for the conterminous United States (Vogelmann et al., 2001), and a second generation National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD 2000) will be developed using 2000-vintage Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) images and ancillary data. The 2000 NLCD will consist of a suite of data layers relevant to many applications, including a tree canopy density layer describing percentage of …

Inhibition Of Erythrocyte Δ- Aminolevulinic Acid Dehydratase (Alad) Activity In Fish From Waters Affects By Lead Smelters, Christopher J. Schmitt, Colleen A. Caldwell, Bill Olsen, Dave Serdar
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
We assessed the effects on fish of lead (Pb) released to streams by smelters located in Trail, BC (Canada), E. Helena, MT, Herculaneum, MO, and Glover, MO. Fish were collected by electrofishing from sites located downstream of smelters and from reference sites. Blood from each fish was analyzed for δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) activity and hemoglobin (Hb), and samples of blood, liver, or carcass were analyzed for Pb, zinc (Zn), or both. Fish collected downstream of all four smelters sites had elevated Pb concentrations, decreased ALAD activity, or both relative to their respective reference sites. At E. Helena, fish from …

Remnant Colloform Pyrite At The Haile Gold Deposit, South Carolina: A Textural Key To Genesis, Nora Foley, Robert A. Ayuso, Robert R. Seal Ii
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Auriferous iron sulfide-bearing deposits of the Carolina slate belt have distinctive mineralogical and textural features—traits that provide a basis to construct models of ore deposition. Our identification of paragenetically early types of pyrite, especially remnant colloform, crustiform, and layered growth textures of pyrite containing electrum and pyrrhotite, establishes unequivocally that gold mineralization was coeval with deposition of host rocks and not solely related to Paleozoic tectonic events. Ore horizons at the Haile deposit, South Carolina, contain many remnants of early pyrite: (1) fine-grained cubic pyrite disseminated along bedding; (2) finegrained spongy, rounded masses of pyrite that may envelop or drape …

The composition and distribution of ice-rafted glacial erratics in late Quaternary sediments define the major current systems of the Arctic Ocean and identify two distinct continental sources for the erratics. In the southern Amerasia basin up to 70% of the erratics are dolostones and limestones (the Amerasia suite) that originated in the carbonate-rich Paleozoic terranes of the Canadian Arctic Islands. These clasts reached the Arctic Ocean in glaciers and were ice-rafted to the core sites in the clockwise Beaufort Gyre. The concentration of erratics decreases northward by 98% along the trend of the gyre from southeastern Canada basin to Makarov …
