Semiclassical Application Of The Mo/Ller Operators In Reactive Scattering, Sophya V. Garashchuk, J. C. Light
Semiclassical Application Of The Mo/Ller Operators In Reactive Scattering, Sophya V. Garashchuk, J. C. Light
Faculty Publications
Mo/ller operators in the formulation of reaction probabilities in terms of wave packet correlation functions allow us to define the wave packets in the interaction region rather than in the asymptotic region of the potential surface. We combine Mo/ller operators with the semiclassical propagator of Herman and Kluk. This does not involve further approximations and can be used with any initial value representation (IVR) semiclassical propagator. Time propagation in asymptotic regions of the potential due to Mo/ller operators reduces the oscillations of the propagator integrand and improves convergence of the results with respect to the number of trajectories. The effectiveness …

Tracking In An Era Of Standards: Low-Expectation Classes Meet High-Expectation Laws, Kevin G. Welner
UC Law Constitutional Quarterly
This article explores racial resegregation of students through the practice of tracking - the grouping of students into separate classrooms pursuant to perceived academic ability. It places tracking within its larger historical context, as a means for white parents to feel secure about their children's education, and presents a review of scholarly literature concerning the characteristics and application tracking. The main body of the article then sets forth recent analyses of data from two school districts, investigating the harmful and segregative effects of tracking. The article ends by examining aspects of tracking that leave it susceptible to legal challenge, considering …

A Market-Based Model For Resource Allocation In Agent Systems, Jonathan Bredin, David Kotz, Daniela Rus
A Market-Based Model For Resource Allocation In Agent Systems, Jonathan Bredin, David Kotz, Daniela Rus
Dartmouth Scholarship
In traditional computational systems, resource owners have no incentive to subject themselves to additional risk and congestion associated with providing service to arbitrary agents, but there are applications that benefit from open environments. We argue for the use of markets to regulate agent systems. With market mechanisms, agents have the abilities to assess the cost of their actions, behave responsibly, and coordinate their resource usage both temporally and spatially. \par We discuss our market structure and mechanisms we have developed to foster secure exchange between agents and hosts. Additionally, we believe that certain agent applications encourage repeated interactions that benefit …

In this paper we study a k-out-of-n reliability system in which a single unreliable server maintains n identical components. The reliability system is studied under the (N,T) policy. An idle server takes a vacation for a random amount of time T and then attends to any failed component waiting in line upon completion of the vacation. The vacationing server is recalled instantaneously upon the failure of the Nth component. The failure times of the components are assumed to follow an exponential distribution. The server is subject to failure with failure times exponentially distributed. Repair times of the component, fixing times …

Biodiversity: Connecting With The Tapestry Of Life, Elise F. Granek, Francisco Dallmeier, Alfonso Alonso, Peter H. Raven
Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
Biodiversity is the extraordinary variety of life on Earth – from genes and species to ecosystems and the valuable functions they perform. E.O. Wilson, the noted biologist and author who coined the term “biodiversity,” explains it as “the very stuff of life.” Species and the ecosystems in which they live are indelibly linked. Conversion or loss of ecosystems inevitably impairs the species that depend on them. As well, changes in the life cycle of one species could impact the life cycles of many other species (including humans), alter ecosystems and ecosystem functions, and contribute to local, regional and, ultimately, global …

Scholarly projects benefit from thoughtful criticism-particularly by those committed to a contrary view. For that reason, I feel fortunate that the three leading proponents of the efficiency of Delaware bankruptcy reorganization have taken the time to respond to our study.' These three critics recognize that the stakes are enormous. As Professor Rasmussen and Professor Thomas put it, the bankruptcy reorganization of large, public companies was "Delawarized" during the decade of the 1990s. If it can be shown that, during the period of Delawarization, the Delaware court provided a wasteful and inefficient reorganization process, it follows that even a very sophisticated …
