The method was validated found to be precise, linear and robust. Reverse-phase HPLC method using a Novapak Cl8 column with a CH3CN: I0mM K2HPO4 …

Local And Systemic Controls On Fish And Fish Habitat In South Dakota Rivers And Streams: Implications For Management, Craig L. Milewski Jan 2001

Local And Systemic Controls On Fish And Fish Habitat In South Dakota Rivers And Streams: Implications For Management, Craig L. Milewski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Assessments of the health of rivers and streams in prairie environments would improve if the role of systemic patterns and processes among geologic-climatic settings in controlling physical habitat and fish communities were better defined. My research approach was based on a premise that assessments of the health of rivers and streams in prairie environments would benefit from studies that 1) examine the moderating effects of systemic patterns and processes by comparing physical habitat continua and fish communities among geologic-climatic settings, 2) determine the relative influence of locally interacting variables (e .g., channel shape and riparian vegetation) and systemic processes in …

Population Characteristics And Sampling Methods Of Catfish For The James And Big Sioux Rivers, John E. Aterburn Jan 2001

Population Characteristics And Sampling Methods Of Catfish For The James And Big Sioux Rivers, John E. Aterburn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Concerns about the sustainability of catfish populations that produce large fish have increased because of abundant media images of large catfish and improvements in specialized fishing equipment. This study will help biologists address these concerns by providing important information about the channel catfish lctalurus punctarus and flathead catfish Pylodictis olivaris populations of the James and Big Sioux rivers and by assessing the effectiveness of various gears used to sample catfish. I compared the number of channel catfish and flathead catfish caught on trotlines by riverine habitat type, hook type, and bait type along with electrofishing and different hoop net combinations. …

Electric Field Controlled, Pulsed Autoionization In Two Electron Wave Packets, J. Greg Story, Heider N. Ereifej Jan 2001

Electric Field Controlled, Pulsed Autoionization In Two Electron Wave Packets, J. Greg Story, Heider N. Ereifej

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, control of the evolution of a two electron wave packet through the application of a static electric field is demonstrated. Specifically, application of a small electric field is used to produce pulsed autoionization events, the timing of which can be controlled on a picosecond time scale. The technique is demonstrated by exciting calcium atoms using a short-pulsed laser to the 4p3/219d doubly excited state, which is energy degenerate with the 4p1/2nk stark states. Evolution of the resultant wave packet is monitored through the application of a second short laser pulse, which stimulates the …

The Status And Distribution Of The Topeka Shiner Notropis Topeka In Eastern South Dakota, Carmen M. Blausey Jan 2001

The Status And Distribution Of The Topeka Shiner Notropis Topeka In Eastern South Dakota, Carmen M. Blausey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Topeka shiner Notropis topeka is a small (< 75 mm) minnow that inhabits prairie streams in several north central plains states. Once widespread and abundant throughout its historic range, the Topeka shiner is now found only in isolated populations. Because of an 80% reduction in occurrence throughout their range, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service listed the Topeka shiner as endangered in January 1999. At the time, limited information on habitat preferences and dist1ibution existed for this species in South Dakota. The objectives of this study were to measure local habitat features and water quality conditions at the reach scale at Topeka shiner study sites, create a model using these data to determine favorable habitat conditions, and identify fish species commonly associated with Topeka shiners. Fish and habitat data were collected at 61 tributary sites of the James, Vermillion, and Big Sioux rivers from June through September in 1999 and 2000. Sample sites in 1999 were based on historic Topeka shiner records in the South Dakota Natural Heritage Database. Sample sites in 2000 were based on a draft GIS model identifying potential Topeka shiner streams. Fish were collected with seines between block nets and standard procedures were used to measure physical and hydrological features of stream reaches. Cyprinids dominated the fish community for each river basin during both sample years. Insectivores and omnivores were the dominant trophic classes for each river basin for both sample years. Fish community associations for Topeka shiners were based on two stepwise logistic regression models: abundance of individual species at each site and presence or absence of individual species at each site. The abundance model indicated that Topeka shiners were most commonly associated with orangespotted sunfish Lepomis lutrenis and tadpole madtoms Noturns gyrinus. The presence/absence model showed that Topeka shiners were typically associated with red shiners Notropis lutrenis, tadpole madtoms Noturns gyrinus, black bullheads Ameiurus melas, and bigmouth shiners Notropis dorsalis. Habitat preferences were based on three stepwise logistic regression models: physical habitat water quality, and substrate composition at the reach scale. The physical habitat model indicated that Topeka shiners are associated with stream reaches that had low animal use, overhanging vegetation, stream bank vegetation comprised of sedges/rushes, low depositional zones, and run macrohabitat. The water quality model did not indicate any favorable or preferred conditions. The substrate model indicated that Topeka shiners are associated with stream reaches that had fine gravel or cobble substrates. The results of my study will lead to a better understanding of Topeka shiner distribution and habitat, and aid federal and state agencies in making management decisions that provide for protection and preservation of this species.

Study Of Dynamics And Mechanism Of Metal-Induced Silicon Growth, Elena A. Guliants, Wayne A. Anderson Jan 2001

Study Of Dynamics And Mechanism Of Metal-Induced Silicon Growth, Elena A. Guliants, Wayne A. Anderson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The present study addresses the mechanism of metal-induced growth of device-quality silicon thin films. Si deposition was performed by magnetron sputtering on a 25-nm-thick Ni prelayer at 525–625 °C and yielded a continuous, highly crystalline film with a columnar structure. A Ni disilicide intermediate layer formed as a result of the Ni reaction with Si deposit provides a sufficient site for the Si epitaxial growth because lattice mismatch is small between the two materials. The reaction between Ni and Si was observed to progress in several stages. The NixSiy phase evolution in a Ni:Si layer was studied by x-ray photoelectron …

Let X be a Banach space, V⊂X is its subspace and U⊂X*. Given x∈X, we are looking for v∈V such that u (v)=u (x) for all u∈U and ‖v‖ ≤M‖x‖. In this article, we study the restrictions placed on the constant M as a function of X,V, and U.

Arithmetic Progressions That Consist Only Of Reduced Residues, Paul A. Tanner Iii Jan 2001

Arithmetic Progressions That Consist Only Of Reduced Residues, Paul A. Tanner Iii

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

This paper contains an elementary derivation of formulas for multiplicative functions of m which exactly yield the following numbers: the number of distinct arithmetic progressions of w reduced residues modulo m; the number of the same with first term n; the number of the same with mean n; the number of the same with common difference n. With m and odd w fixed, the values of the first two of the last three functions are fixed and equal for all n relatively prime to m; other similar relations exist among these three functions.

Nonexistence Theorems For Weak Dolutions Of Quasilinear Elliptic Equations, A. G. Kartsatos, V. V. Kurta Jan 2001

Nonexistence Theorems For Weak Dolutions Of Quasilinear Elliptic Equations, A. G. Kartsatos, V. V. Kurta

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

New nonexistence results are obtained for entire bounded (either from above or from below) weak solutions of wide classes of quasilinear elliptic equations and inequalities. It should be stressed that these solutions belong only locally to the corresponding Sobolev spaces. Important examples of the situations considered herein are the following: Σi=1n(a (x)|∇u| p−2uxi)=−|u| q−1u,Σi=1n(a (x)| uxi | p−2uxi)xi=−|u| q−1u,Σi=1n(a (x)|∇u| p−2uxi/1+|∇u| 2)xi=−|u| q−1u, where n≥1, p>1, q>0 are fixed real numbers, and a(x) is a nonnegative measurable locally bounded function. The methods involve the use of capacity theory in connection with special types of test functions and new …

Walk-And-Ride: Factors Influencing Pedestrian Access To Transit, Robert Cervero Jan 2001

Walk-And-Ride: Factors Influencing Pedestrian Access To Transit, Robert Cervero

Journal of Public Transportation

The predominant means of reaching suburban rail stations in the United States is by private car. Transit villages strive, among other things, to convert larger shares of rail access trips to walk-and-ride, bike-and-ride, and bus-and-ride. Empirical evidence on how built environments influence walk-access to rail transit remains sketchy. In this article, analyses are carried out at two resolutions to address this question. Aggregate data from the San Francisco Bay Area reveal compact, mixed-use settings with minimal obstructions are conducive to walk-and-ride rail patronage. A disaggregate-level analysis of access trips to Washington Metrorail services by residents of Montgomery County, Maryland, shows …

Decision Structuring And Robustness Analysis In Selecting Urban Transit Alternatives, Isam A. Kaysi, Mohamed-Asem U. Abdul-Malak Jan 2001

Decision Structuring And Robustness Analysis In Selecting Urban Transit Alternatives, Isam A. Kaysi, Mohamed-Asem U. Abdul-Malak

Journal of Public Transportation

Public policy-makers in many cities worldwide have recognized the need to seek urban passenger transport solutions in the domain of urban transit systems. However, with the availability of many transit technologies and systems, decision-makers need support in identifying the advantages and disadvantages of each system, and in evaluating their suitability for the specific urban context being considered. In this article, the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) is proposed as a decision-support methodology for evaluation of urban transit systems. A hierarchy is proposed for the evaluation of system choice, and an illustrative example is presented. The hierarchy reflects overall objectives of transit …

Salmonine Consumption And Competition For Endemic Prey Fishes In Bear Lake, Utah-Idaho, J. R. Ruzycki, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Chris Luecke Jan 2001

Salmonine Consumption And Competition For Endemic Prey Fishes In Bear Lake, Utah-Idaho, J. R. Ruzycki, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Chris Luecke

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Two principal sport fish—the indigenous Bonneville cutthroat trout Oncorhynchus clarki utah and the introduced lake trout Salvelinus namaycush—are the dominant piscivores in Bear Lake, a 282-km^2 oligotrophic system. These piscivores rely predominantly on four endemic prey fish species that make up a major portion of the unique Bear Lake fish assemblage. We estimated the annual biomass of pelagic and benthic prey fish by using hydroacoustic and trawling techniques. We also estimated the lakewide abundance of piscivores with a multiple mark–recapture survey and used a bioenergetics model to compare the population-level consumption of prey fish with prey fish production. Prey fish …

Electron Heating In Atmospheric Pressure Glow Discharges, Robert H. Stark, Karl H. Schoenbach Jan 2001

Electron Heating In Atmospheric Pressure Glow Discharges, Robert H. Stark, Karl H. Schoenbach

Bioelectrics Publications

The application of nanosecond voltage pulses to weakly ionized atmospheric pressure plasmas allows heating the electrons without considerably increasing the gas temperature, provided that the duration of the pulses is less than the critical time for the development of glow-to-arc transitions. The shift in the electron energy distribution towards higher energies causes a temporary increase in the ionization rate, and consequently a strong rise in electron density. This increase in electron density is reflected in an increased decay time of the plasma after the pulse application. Experiments in atmospheric pressure air glow discharges with gas temperatures of approximately 2000 K …
