Multi -Mission Attitude Determination System For Balloon Flight, Liping Mo Jan 2001

Multi -Mission Attitude Determination System For Balloon Flight, Liping Mo

Doctoral Dissertations

MADS (Multi-mission Attitude Determination System) is a new software package used to determine the attitude of instruments on a high-altitude balloon employed for scientific experiments. There is no existing system for the automated determination of the attitude of instruments in balloon experiments, so we have developed MADS to do the data analysis for balloon experiments to find the location of astrophysical sources such as gamma-ray or x-ray sources.

The two areas that required most work were modeling star trackers and modeling the motion of the balloon. Star trackers are used on satellites, but are far too expensive and sophisticated to …

Mathematical Modeling For Fabricating A Microstructure With A Pre-Specified Geometry Using Laser -Induced Chemical Vapor Deposition, Chaoyang Zhang Jan 2001

Mathematical Modeling For Fabricating A Microstructure With A Pre-Specified Geometry Using Laser -Induced Chemical Vapor Deposition, Chaoyang Zhang

Doctoral Dissertations

Laser-induced chemical vapor deposition (LCVD) is an emerging new technique with many practical applications. To optimize the system for fabricating a microstructure with a pre-specified geometry in pyrolytic LCVD, a three-dimensional mathematical model is developed for predicting temperature distributions and laser dwell times across the substrate scanned by the laser beam. A microstructure is fabricated layer by layer, and for each layer the laser beam moves from one pixel to the next. The complicated correlations among temperature distribution, deposit growth rate, and laser dwell time are investigated. A purely heterogeneous reaction is assumed and any gas-phase transport is ignored.

Turning Gray Into Green: Some Comments On Napster, Shubha Ghosh Jan 2001

Turning Gray Into Green: Some Comments On Napster, Shubha Ghosh

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

File sharing involves a combination of legitimate distribution and illegitimate copying, and the two cannot be separated. The prevailing argument in the Ninth Circuit's Napster opinion, that he infringement is not in the distribution or the sharing, but in the copying, ignores the merger of copying and distribution. This article analyzes the economics of intellectual property, and applies that economic analysis to Napster as an alternative mechanism for the distribution of music. This article suggests that owners of file sharing systems like Napster privatize their economic interests through intellectual property law, by obtaining business method patent protection for file sharing …

Comparing Size In Lime, Mark Whitten Jan 2001

Comparing Size In Lime, Mark Whitten

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Extensive research into the management of soil acidity in Western Australia is increasing farmer awareness that lime use can reduce soil acidity and improve crop yields. However, as lime use increases, the question of lime performance and particle size is becoming more critical. Chris Gazey from the Department of Agriculture is heading up the soil acidity project, with the team comprising members from the department, CSIRO and the University of Western Australia. Mark Whitten reports on project outcomes relating to lime particle size.

Naturalized Epistemology And The Critique Of Evidence Theory, Dale A. Nance Jan 2001

Naturalized Epistemology And The Critique Of Evidence Theory, Dale A. Nance

Faculty Publications

In this article I give a mixed review Allen and Leiter’s naturalized epistemology theory of evidence. I applaud their focus on naturalized epistemology, but I question the claims that they argue follow from it. In some ways, my reaction is that they have not gone far enough in pressing its implications, and I attempt to suggest how further progress might be made along this path. On the whole, I conclude that the antipathy toward algrithms expressed by Allen and Leiter is misplaced.

Supreme Court Voting Behavior: 1999 Term, Richard G. Wilkins, Scott Worthington, Rachelle Fleming, Matthew Fleming Jan 2001

Supreme Court Voting Behavior: 1999 Term, Richard G. Wilkins, Scott Worthington, Rachelle Fleming, Matthew Fleming

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

This Study, the fourteenth in a series, tabulates and analyzes the voting behavior of the United States Supreme Court during the 1999 Term. The analysis is designed to determine whether individual Justices and the Court as a whole are voting more "conservatively," more "liberally," or about the same as compared with past Terms. This Term's survey suggests a reversal of the Court's liberal trend over the past two Terms, with conservative movement in six of the ten categories. Specifically, the Court's support of statutory civil rights claims plummeted to an all time low, while the Court exhibited a dramatic conservative …

Production Of A Novel Copper-Binding Ligand By Marine Synechococcus (Cyanobacteria) In Response To Toxic Concentrations Of Copper, Arunsi C. Brown, Andrew S. Gordon Jan 2001

Production Of A Novel Copper-Binding Ligand By Marine Synechococcus (Cyanobacteria) In Response To Toxic Concentrations Of Copper, Arunsi C. Brown, Andrew S. Gordon

Virginia Journal of Science

Marine Synechococcus spp. are extremely sensitive to copper toxicity. Some strains have been shown to produce high-affinity, extracellular ligands of unknown structure which form complexes with free cupric ion. They are also known to produce metallothioneins (MT) in response to cadmium and zinc stress. In the present study, marine Synechococcus PCC 73109 (Agmenellum quadruplicatum BG-1) (Van Baalen) was exposed to three concentrations of CuSO4 for various times. Size exclusion chromatography, atomic absorption spectrophotometry, and reverse phase HPLC were used to isolate an intracellular copper binding ligand of low molecular weight (< 6,500 Da). The ligand was detected after exposure to ≥ 8 μM CuSO4 for 2 hr in BG-11 medium. …

Use Of Principal Component Analysis To Determine Down-Hole Tool Orientation And Enhance Sh-Waves, Paul Michaels Jan 2001

Use Of Principal Component Analysis To Determine Down-Hole Tool Orientation And Enhance Sh-Waves, Paul Michaels

CGISS Publications and Presentations

A common problem in down-hole shear wave surveys is the determination of the tool rotation relative to the seismic source polarization direction. This paper reports an algorithm which has been developed to solve for this angle in the horizontal plane. The method employs Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to determine the angle from the large motion of the SH-wave (not first motion). Once the angle is known, the horizontal component data may be rotated so that one component is aligned with the source polarization, and the other orthogonal to it.

Significant findings include the following. First, subtraction of oppositely polarized source …

Latent Maximum Entropy Principle For Statistical Language Modeling, Shaojun Wang, Ronald Rosenfeld, Yunxin Zhao Jan 2001

Latent Maximum Entropy Principle For Statistical Language Modeling, Shaojun Wang, Ronald Rosenfeld, Yunxin Zhao

Kno.e.sis Publications

We describe a unified probabilistic framework for statistical language modeling, the latent maximum entropy principle. The salient feature of this approach is that the hidden causal hierarchical dependency structure can be encoded into the statistical model in a principled way by mixtures of exponential families with a rich expressive power. We first show the problem formulation, solution, and certain convergence properties. We then describe how to use this machine learning technique to model various aspects of natural language, such as syntactic structure of sentences, semantic information in a document. Finally, we draw a conclusion and point out future research directions.

Evolution Of Deep Centers In Gan Grown By Hydride Vapor Phase Epitaxy, Z-Q. Fang, David C. Look, J. Jasinski, M. Benamara, Z. Liliental-Weber, Richard J. Molnar Jan 2001

Evolution Of Deep Centers In Gan Grown By Hydride Vapor Phase Epitaxy, Z-Q. Fang, David C. Look, J. Jasinski, M. Benamara, Z. Liliental-Weber, Richard J. Molnar

Physics Faculty Publications

Deep centers and dislocation densities in undoped n GaN, grown by hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE), were characterized as a function of the layer thickness by deep level transient spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy, respectively. As the layer thickness decreases, the variety and concentration of deep centers increase, in conjunction with the increase of dislocation density. Based on comparison with electron-irradiation induced centers, some dominant centers in HVPE GaN are identified as possible point defects.

Generalized Metrics And Topology In Logic Programming Semantics, Pascal Hitzler Jan 2001

Generalized Metrics And Topology In Logic Programming Semantics, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Many fixed-point theorems are essentially topological in nature. Among them are the Banach contraction mapping theorem on metric spaces and the fixed-point theorem for Scott-continuous mappings on complete partial orders. The latter theorem is fundamental in denotational semantics since semantic operators in most programming language paradigms satisfy its requirements. The use of negation in logic programming and non-monotonic reasoning, however, renders some semantic operators to be non-monotonic, hence discontinuous with respect to the Scott topology, and therefore invalidates the standard approach, so that alternative methods have to be sought. In this thesis, we investigate topological methods, including generalized metric fixed-point …

Earthquake Stress Drop And Laboratory-Inferred Interseismic Strength Recovery, N. M. Beeler, S. H. Hickman, T. F. Wong Jan 2001

Earthquake Stress Drop And Laboratory-Inferred Interseismic Strength Recovery, N. M. Beeler, S. H. Hickman, T. F. Wong

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

We determine the scaling relationships between earthquake stress drop and recurrence interval t, that are implied by laboratory-measured fault strength.  We assume that repeating earthquakes can be simulated by stick-slip sliding using a spring and slider block model.  Simulations with static/kinetic strength, time-dependent strength, and rate- and state-variable dependent strength indicate that the relationship between loading velociety and recurrence intercal can be adequately described be the power law VL ∞ tnr, where n ≈ -1. Deviations from n≈ -1 arise from second order effects on strength, with n> -1 corresponding to apparent time-dependent …

Use Of Py-Gc/Ms Analysis Techniques In Animal Waste Management: A Preliminary Survey Of Dairy Manures, Daniel L. Vaughn, Michael A. Kruge Jan 2001

Use Of Py-Gc/Ms Analysis Techniques In Animal Waste Management: A Preliminary Survey Of Dairy Manures, Daniel L. Vaughn, Michael A. Kruge

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The increasing practice of industrial-scale agriculture tends to concentrate large masses of animal waste in relatively compact areas, potentially leading to excessive release of polluting nutrients into waterways during major storms. Anaerobic treatment conditions are generally favored to conserve nitrate N as an agricultural commodity. However, overall N contents in waste are often in excess of crop fertilization needs: storing excess N in soluble nitrate form increases pollution potential. Thus the perceived needs of agriculture and society-at-large become at odds. Organic nitrogen forms (e.g., proteins) are more environmentally stable and are less subject to unintentional release. Although U.S. farmers tend …

Residual Properties And Almost Equicontinuity, Ethan Akin, Eli Glasner Jan 2001

Residual Properties And Almost Equicontinuity, Ethan Akin, Eli Glasner

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A property P of a compact dynamical system (X, f) is called a residual property if it is inherited by factors, almost one-to-one lifts and surjective inverse limits. Many transitivity properties are residual. Weak disjointness from all property P systems is a residual property provided P is a residual property stronger than transitivity. Here two systems are weakly disjoint when their product is transitive. Our main result says that for an almost equicontinuous system (X, f) with associated monothetic group Λ, (X, f) is weakly disjoint from all P systems if the only P systems upon which Λ acts are …

Low-Saturated-Fat Soybean Oil Reduces Saturated Fat In School Menus, J. M. Mahnken, S. F. Lutz, C. J. Anders, W. R. Fehr

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

This study evaluated the impact of using low-saturated-fat soybean {Glycine max (L.) Merr.} oil on the saturated fat content of school menus. Seventy-six weekly menus were obtained from the Iowa Department of Education during School Meals Initiative reviews for the 1996-1997 school year. Three modifications were performed on school menus using the Nuttikids computer program: Low-saturated- fat (LSF) soybean oil replaced traditional vegetable oil in menu items; LSF soybean oil was substituted for traditional vegetable oil, solid fats, and egg yolks in recipes; and a menu simulation was conducted where oils and solid fats used in menu items were …

Species Specific Odds Of Occurrence Of Blackspot Among Fish From The Maple River In Western Iowa, John W. Mellen Jan 2001

Species Specific Odds Of Occurrence Of Blackspot Among Fish From The Maple River In Western Iowa, John W. Mellen

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Odds ratio analysis was used to evaluate the relative likelihood of occurrence of blackspot (Neascus pyriformil, Chandler) infections among 14 species of fish collected from the Maple River in Buena Vista and Ida Counties in western Iowa. Prevalence estimates ranged from 0% to 47.4% with a mean prevalence of 11.9%. The rank ordering of odds ratios of infection allowed the species to be categorized as those with risks greater than, less than, and not different from average risk to infection within the Maple River sample. The species with the largest odds ratio was the bluntnose minnow, (Pimephales notatus) (odds ratio …
