Extended Powers Of Manifolds And The Adams Spectral Sequence, Robert R. Bruner Jan 2001

Extended Powers Of Manifolds And The Adams Spectral Sequence, Robert R. Bruner

Mathematics Faculty Research Publications

The extended power construction can be used to create new framed manifolds out of old. We show here how to compute the effect of such operations in the Adams spectral sequence, extending partial results of Milgram and the author. This gives the simplest method of proving that Jones’ 30-manifold has Kervaire invariant one, and allows the construction of manifolds representing Mahowald’s classes η4 and η5, among others.

shares; that, if proprietary exchanges are allowed to act as regulators, they should be subject to some constraints as to how they perform this function; and that, contrary to the ordinary case where we have reason to believe that markets discipline firms, a vigorous market for control of exchanges could have harmful effects. The concern that underlies these conclusions is a concern that a country's national interest in protecting its domestic capital markets for the benefit of domestic enterprise and investors is likely to be undermined in a world where exchanges act just like any other business. Management, are clearly …

Securities Price Risks And Financial Derivative Markets , Peter H. Huang Jan 2001

Securities Price Risks And Financial Derivative Markets , Peter H. Huang

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

The financial and popular media report almost daily on the volatility of securities market prices. Yet, many people continue to buy securities to hedge against or speculate on certain risks. People can also buy or sell derivatives to hedge against or speculate on fluctuations in securities prices. This Article discusses three regulatory policy implications of utilizing derivatives markets to reallocate the bearing of securities price risks. First, if there are too few non-redundant derivative markets, a competitive market equilibrium allocation of securities price risks is typically constrained Pareto inefficient. This financial economic result means that for typical economies, a regulator …

Design And Applications Of Volume Holographic Optical Elements, Steven C. Dunn Jan 2001

Design And Applications Of Volume Holographic Optical Elements, Steven C. Dunn

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Volume gratings were studied both theoretically and experimentally in order to design and analyze practical volume holographic optical elements. The diffraction of finite (Gaussian) beams by transmission gratings is investigated. A closed form solution for the off-Bragg profiles is obtained, and the distortion in the resulting profiles is analyzed. Criteria for when the finiteness of the beam has a minimal effect on the angular selectivity response are given. A model is developed to investigate the cross talk in multiplexed gratings Experimental verification in LiNb03 and PTR glass is demonstrated. The diffraction efficiency and output profiles of finite beams diffracted …

Jobqueue: A Computational Grid-Wide Queuing System, Dimitros Katramatos, Marty Humphrey, Andrew Grimshaw, Steve Chapin Jan 2001

Jobqueue: A Computational Grid-Wide Queuing System, Dimitros Katramatos, Marty Humphrey, Andrew Grimshaw, Steve Chapin

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

In a Computational Grid, it is not easy to maintain grid-wide control over the number of executing jobs, as well as a global view of the status of submitting jobs, due to the heterogeneity in resource type, availability, and access policies. This paper describes the design and implementation of JobQueue, which is a Computational Grid-wide queuing system, or metaqueuing system, implemented in Legion. JobQueue is unique because of its ability to span multiple administrative domains. It can also be reconfigured dynamically along a number of dimensions and in the general case does not require special privileges to create, facilitating new …

Identification Of Linkage Between Strategic Group And Performance Of Indian Commercial Banks: A Combined Approach Using Dea And Co-Plot, Prithwiraj Nath, Avinandan Mukherjee, Manabendra Nath

Marketing Faculty Research

This paper explores the linkage between strategic grouping and performance of the Indian banking sector. Strategic grouping and performance were identified using published financial information for all public sector banks. Grouping of Indian public sector banks following comparable financial strategy – with similar asset quality, operational efficiency and profitability was operationalized using the graphical display method of Co-plot.

From their position in the two dimensional conceptual map, banks with identical financial performance formed strategic groups with significant positive linkage between better groups and their superior financial performance, which showed their inherent homogeneity in business policy decisions. Relative performance of the …

Production And Structure Of Rapidly Solidified Al-Si Alloys, Orhan Uzun, Tuncay Karaaslan, Mustafa Keski̇n Jan 2001

Production And Structure Of Rapidly Solidified Al-Si Alloys, Orhan Uzun, Tuncay Karaaslan, Mustafa Keski̇n

Turkish Journal of Physics

Al-Si alloys with compositions 8, 12, 16wt% Si were manufactured by chill casting and melt-spinning (MS) methods. The resulting ribbon samples have been characterized by optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffractometry and compared with their ingot counterparts. Microstructural examinations revealed that microstructures of the melt-spun ribbons were quite fine compared to their ingot counterparts. Both XRD analyses and microstructural examinations indicated that the solubility of Si in \alpha -Al phase was nearly complete.

Here we submit that mathematical tools used in population viability analysis can be used in conjunction with floristic and faunistic surveys to predict changes in biogeographic range. We illustrate our point by summarizing the results of a demographic study of Lobelia boykinii. In this study we used deterministic and stochastic matrix models to estimate the growth rate and to predict the time to extinction for three populations growing in the Carolina bays. The stochastic model better discriminated among the fates of the three populations. It predicted extinction for two populations in the next 25 years but no extinction of the …

Curriculum, Pedagogy, And Teacherly Ethos, Marshall W. Gregory Jan 2001

Curriculum, Pedagogy, And Teacherly Ethos, Marshall W. Gregory

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

In considering how curriculum and teaching influence education, it is revealing to note that most faculty members treat curriculum the way bankers treat investments. They generally spend much time, planning, and careful thought on curricular matters-reasoning here, analyzing there, relying on experience, and carefully considering both the long-term and short-term dividends of knowledge - but when it comes to teaching, many faculty members operate less like bankers and more like barnstormers, flying by the seat of their pants and guiding themselves primarily by instinct or by repeating whatever worked yesterday.

Study Of 5 And 10 Mm Thick Czt Strip Detectors, John R. Macri, Pierre C. Dufour, L A. Hamel, M Julien, Mark L. Mcconnell, M Mcclish, James M. Ryan, Mark Widholm Jan 2001

Study Of 5 And 10 Mm Thick Czt Strip Detectors, John R. Macri, Pierre C. Dufour, L A. Hamel, M Julien, Mark L. Mcconnell, M Mcclish, James M. Ryan, Mark Widholm

Space Science Center

We report progress in the study of 5 and 10 mm thick CZT strip detectors featuring orthogonal coplanar anode contacts. This novel anode geometry combines the advantages of pixel detectors with those of double-sided strip detectors. Like pixel detectors, these are electron-only devices that perform well as hard x-ray and y-ray spectrometers and imagers even in the thicker configurations required for reasonable detection efficiency at 1 MeV. Like double-sided strip detectors in an N x N configuration, these detectors require only 2N readout channels to form N2 “pixels”. Unlike doublesided strip detectors, all signal contacts for spectroscopy and 3- d …

Space Science Center

The “Pre-SMM” (Vestrand and Miller 1998) picture of gamma-ray line (GRL) flares was that they are relatively rare events. This picture was quickly put in question with the launch of the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM). Over 100 GRL flares were seen with sizes ranging from very large GOES class events (X12) down to moderately small events (M2). It was argued by some (Bai 1986) that this was still consistent with the idea that GRL events are rare. Others, however, argued the opposite (Vestrand 1988; Cliver, Crosby and Dennis 1994), stating that the lower end of this distribution was just a …

Sontrac—A Scintillating Plastic Fiber Tracking Detector For Neutron And Proton Imaging Spectroscopy, James M. Ryan, John R. Macri, Mark L. Mcconnell, R S. Miller Jan 2001

Sontrac—A Scintillating Plastic Fiber Tracking Detector For Neutron And Proton Imaging Spectroscopy, James M. Ryan, John R. Macri, Mark L. Mcconnell, R S. Miller

Space Science Center

SONTRAC (SOlar Neutron TRACking imager and spectrometer) is a conceptual instrument intended to measure the energy and incident direction of 20–150 MeV neutrons produced in solar flares. The intense neutron background in a low-Earth orbit requires that imaging techniques be employed to maximize an instrument’s signal-to-noise ratio. The instrument is comprised of mutually perpendicular, alternating layers of parallel, scintillating, plastic fibers that are viewed by optoelectronic devices. Two stereoscopic views of recoil proton tracks are necessary to determine the incident neutron’s direction and energy. The instrument can also be used as a powerful energetic proton imager. Data from a fully …

Comptel Observations Of The Blazars 3c 454.3 And Cta 102, S Zhang, W Collmar, V Schonfelder, H Bloemen, W Hermsen, Mark L. Mcconnell, K Bennett, O R. Williams Jan 2001

Comptel Observations Of The Blazars 3c 454.3 And Cta 102, S Zhang, W Collmar, V Schonfelder, H Bloemen, W Hermsen, Mark L. Mcconnell, K Bennett, O R. Williams

Space Science Center

We have analyzed the two blazars of 3C 454.3 and CTA 102 using all available COMPTEL data from 1991 to 1999. In the 10–30 MeV band, emission from the general direction of the sources is found at the 4σ-level, being consistent with contributions from both sources. Below 10 MeV only 3C 454.3 is significantly detected, with the strongest evidence (5.6 σ) in the 3–10 MeV band. Significant flux variability is not observed for both sources, while a low emission is seen most of the years in the 3–10 MeV light curve for 3C 454.3. Its time-averaged MeV spectrum suggests a …

A Diagnostic Study Of Temperature Controls On Global Terrestrial Carbon Exchange, Tomislava Vukicevic, Rob Braswell, David S. Schimel Jan 2001

A Diagnostic Study Of Temperature Controls On Global Terrestrial Carbon Exchange, Tomislava Vukicevic, Rob Braswell, David S. Schimel

Earth Sciences

The observed interannual variability of atmospheric CO2 reflects short-term variability in sources and sinks of CO2 . Analyses using 13CO2 and O2 suggest that much of the observed interannual variability is due to changes in terrestrial CO2 exchange. First principles, empirical correlations and process models suggest a link between climate variation and net ecosystem exchange, but the scaling of ecological process studies to the globe is notoriously difficult. We sought to identify a component of global CO2 exchange that varied coherently with land temperature anomalies using an inverse modeling approach. We developed a family of simplified spatially aggregated ecosystem models …

Comptel Observations Of The Virgo Blazars 3c 273 And 3c 279, W Collmar, V Schonfelder, S Zhang, H Bloemen, W Hermsen, Mark L. Mcconnell, K Bennett, O R. Williams

Space Science Center

We report the main MeV properties (detections, light curves, spectra) of the Virgo blazars 3C 273 and 3C 279 which were derived from a consistent analysis of all COMPTEL Virgo observations between 1991 and 1997.

Bayesian Multiscale Deconvolution Applied To Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy, C A. Young, A Connors, E Kolaczyk, Mark L. Mcconnell, G Rank, James M. Ryan, V Schonfelder

Space Science Center

A common task in gamma-ray astronomy is to extract spectral information, such as model constraints and incident photon spectrum estimates, given the measured energy deposited in a detector and the detector response. This is the classic problem of spectral “deconvolution” or spectral inversion. The methods of forward folding (i.e., parameter fitting) and maximum entropy “deconvolution” (i.e., estimating independent input photon rates for each individual energy bin) have been used successfully for gamma-ray solar flares (e.g., Rank, 1997; Share and Murphy, 1995). These methods have worked well under certain conditions but there are situations were they don’t apply. These are: 1) …

Space Science Center

We have used observations from CGRO to study the variation in the MeV emission of Cygnus X-1 between its low and high X-ray states. These data provide a measurement of the spectral variability above 1 MeV. The high state MeV spectrum is found to be much harder than that of the low state MeV spectrum. In particular, the power-law emission seen at hard X-ray energies in the high state spectrum (with a photon spectral index of 2.6) is found to extend out to at least 5 MeV, with no evidence for any cutoff. Here we present the data and describe …

Energetic Proton Spectra In The 11 June 1991 Solar Flare, C A. Young, K Bennett, A Connors, R Diehl, Mark L. Mcconnell, G Rank, James M. Ryan, R Suleiman, V Schonfelder, C Winkler Jan 2001

Energetic Proton Spectra In The 11 June 1991 Solar Flare, C A. Young, K Bennett, A Connors, R Diehl, Mark L. Mcconnell, G Rank, James M. Ryan, R Suleiman, V Schonfelder, C Winkler

Space Science Center

The June 11, 1991 gamma-ray flare seen by the Compton Gamma-ray Observatory (CGRO) displays several features that make it a dynamic and rich event. It is a member of a class of long duration gamma-ray events with both 2.223 MeV and greater than 8 MeV emission for hours after the impulsive phase. It also contains an inter-phase between the impulsive and extended phases that presents a challenge to the standard gamma-ray line (GRL) flare picture. This phase has strong 2.223 MeV emission and relatively weak 4.44 MeV emission indicative of a very hard parent proton spectrum. However, this would indicate …

Space Science Center

This work expands the current understanding of the 15 November 1991 Solar Flare. The flare was a well observed event in radio to gamma-rays and is the first flare to be extensively studied with the benefit of detailed soft and hard X-ray images. In this work, we add data from all four instruments on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. Using these data we determined that the accelerated electron spectrum above 170 keV is best fit with a power law with a spectral index of −4.6, while the accelerated proton spectrum above 0.6 MeV is fit with a power law of …

Ascape: Abstracting Complexity, Miles T. Parker Jan 2001

Ascape: Abstracting Complexity, Miles T. Parker

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

Software tools used in science typically take a kitchen-sink approach to design. From statistics to mathematics to engineering to agent modeling, even those tools that have a strong organizing theme tend towards supporting every contingency and methodology. This impulse toward generalization and breadth is laudable and necessary. However, there is a complementary case to be made for the discipline of abstraction, parsimony, and depth, and that is the case I make for Ascape. I argue in general for the importance of abstraction in agent-based modeling. I then discuss three key abstractions enforced in Ascape, and the opportunities they create for …

Calcareous Nannofossils From Cape Roberts Project Drillhole Crp-3, Victoria Land Basin, Antarctica, David K. Watkins, S. W. Wise Jr., G. Villa Jan 2001

Calcareous Nannofossils From Cape Roberts Project Drillhole Crp-3, Victoria Land Basin, Antarctica, David K. Watkins, S. W. Wise Jr., G. Villa

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Fossil specimens of the exclusively oceanic calcareous nannoplankton were found only in the upper 200 m of the Cape Roberts Project 3 (CRP-3) cores. These assemblages are depauperate and sporadic in occurrence. The majority of the assemblages contain fewer than 4 species, indicating a severe palaeoecological restriction. The clear domination of these assemblages by reticulofenestrid species, coupled with the almost total exclusion of Coccolithus pelagicus, indicates cold surface water conditions in the Victoria Land Basin during the lives of these poor algae. These cold surface water conditions, perhaps coupled with abnormal surface water chemistry, excluded almost all of the …
