Introduction: Fear And Loathing Of Evolutionary Psychology In The Social Sciences, Daniel Leger, Alan Kamil, Jeffrey A. French
Introduction: Fear And Loathing Of Evolutionary Psychology In The Social Sciences, Daniel Leger, Alan Kamil, Jeffrey A. French
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
When one looks at the intellectual landscape of the modern university, at the scholarly and scientific interests of its faculty, the panorama is seamless. There are no discontinuities. The interests of physicists transmogrify into those of chemists, those of chemists into those of biologists, and so on. The lines, the divisions, between departments have been created out of administrative, not intellectual, necessity.
For example, consider the divide between chemistry and biology. There is a set of chemical processes that are characteristic of living systems. Is the study of these processes chemistry or biology? This is a meaningless question. To be …
Integrating Learning Strategies Into Teaching, Terry Doyle
Integrating Learning Strategies Into Teaching, Terry Doyle
Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives
Students often lack the strategies needed to effectively learn course content. Integrating the teaching of “learning how to learn” strategies into course content is the best way for students to be successful.
The Spatial Distribution Of Diversity Between Disparate Taxa: Spatial Correspondence Between Mammals And Ants Across South Florida, Usa, Craig R. Allen, L. G. Pearlstine, D.P. Wojcik, W.M. Kitchens
The Spatial Distribution Of Diversity Between Disparate Taxa: Spatial Correspondence Between Mammals And Ants Across South Florida, Usa, Craig R. Allen, L. G. Pearlstine, D.P. Wojcik, W.M. Kitchens
Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications
Gap Analysis takes a proactive landscape-level approach to conserving native species by identifying nodes of high biological diversity. It uses vertebrate species richness as an index of overall biological diversity. However, it remains unknownwhether or not the spatial distribution of vertebrate diversity correspondswith the diversity of other taxa. We tested whether landscape-level diversity patterns corresponded between a vertebrate and an invertebrate taxon, mammals and ants, across the southern half of the Florida peninsula, USA. Composite digital maps with a 30-m spatial resolution were produced for each taxon. Spatial correspondence between the taxa was determined by normalizing and then subtracting the …

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research
This paper shows statistical results of the ring current ion composition and its variability as a function of solar cycle and magnetospheric activity for 3 < L < 8. Spin-averaged energetic particle (1-200 keV) measurements from Polar are combined with geomagnetic indices as well as solar wind and interplanetary observations from the Wind spacecraft during a period from September 1996 to March 1999. The statistics are performed both for time-averaged values for all periods as well as for peak flux values during geomagnetic storms (defined as Dst < -50 nT) that occurred during this period. The average O+ energy density increases by about a factor of 5 during the rising phase of the solar cycle from the minimum values in 1996, while the average values of H+ and He show variability but no consistently increasing trend. The O+ flux is small (below 10%) compared with the hydrogen flux, and the average energy density ranges from a few percent at solar minimum to ∼10% at high solar activity time in …
When A Patent Claim Is Broader Than The Disclosure: The Federal Circuit's Game Has No Rules, 1 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 21 (2001), Robert L. Harmon
When A Patent Claim Is Broader Than The Disclosure: The Federal Circuit's Game Has No Rules, 1 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 21 (2001), Robert L. Harmon
UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law
The Federal Circuit has become much less willing to enforce a claim that is broader than the specific embodiments described in the patent. Unfortunately, its decisions provide no guidelines for identifying such situations. Nor is the court consistent in its attacks on the problem. Sometimes it simply construes the claim as limited to the specific embodiment and finds no infringement. Sometimes it invalidates the claim for want of an adequate written description or for insufficient scope of enablement. It is suggested that a careful use of the reverse doctrine of equivalents would create stability and predictability with respect to this …

Uniform Rules Of Engagement: The New Tax Regime For Foreign Sales, Harold S. Peckron
Uniform Rules Of Engagement: The New Tax Regime For Foreign Sales, Harold S. Peckron
UC Law SF International Law Review
The World Trade Organization (WTO) administers, enforces, and decides international trade disputes by establishing uniform rules of trade engagement designed to minimize trade wars. Countries that fail to abide by the WTO rules can be taken to the WTO courts and face eventual sanctioned retaliation. Without such rules, global economic competition can be as fierce as the most devastating battle and, as history has shown, can be the catalyst for war.
This Article examines the United States' alleged disregard of the WTO uniform trade rules through the use of foreign sales corporations, and how this tax regime almost ignited an …

The Human Genome In The Public View: Genetics, Geneticists, And Eugenics, Mary Kay Pelias, Nathan J. Markward
St. Thomas Law Review
Recent advances in the technologies of molecular genetics have generated a plethora of questions about how these technologies should be used and what, if any, constraints should be imposed on their use. Commentators on the use of the new genetic technologies have, on the one hand, emphasized the benefits to be realized from genetics research in terms of human health and welfare. On the other hand, a handful of critics have focused on the possible misuses of the new technologies and have urged surveillance of genetics and geneticists, lest we again fall into the morass of coercive, or forcible, eugenics. …

SWOSU Yearbooks
It was called Southwestern Normal School. Its yearbook was The Oracle. The year was 1901. Oklahoma wasn't even a state when Weatherford started up the small teacher's school. There was no campus. Instead, the town borrowed office space from a beer company. Finally, a building was set up on a hill north of town. In a grand ceremony one morning, the students, faculty and staff marched from downtown Weatherford to their new home.
On a chilly, rainy March 8, 2001, Southwestern re-created the scene, ending with a campus-wide picture. The event was a 100 years in the making, just as …

Task Specific Uncertainty In Coordinate Measurement, R. G. Wilhelm, R. Hocken, H. Schwenke
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Task specific uncertainty is the measurement uncertainty associated with the measurement of a specific feature using a specific measurement plan. This paper surveys techniques developed to model and estimate task specific uncertainty for coordinate measuring systems, primarily coordinate measuring machines using contacting probes. Sources of uncertainty are also reviewed.

A Multigrid Method For Elliptic Grid Generation Using Compact Schemes, Balaji S. Iyangar
A Multigrid Method For Elliptic Grid Generation Using Compact Schemes, Balaji S. Iyangar
Doctoral Dissertations
Traditional iterative methods are stalling numerical processes, in which the error has relatively small changes from one iteration to the next. Multigrid methods overcome the limitations of iterative methods and are computationally efficient. Convergence of iterative methods for elliptic partial differential equations is extremely slow. In particular, the convergence of the non-linear elliptic Poisson grid generation equations used for elliptic grid generation is very slow. Multigrid methods are fast converging methods when applied to elliptic partial differential equations. In this dissertation, a non-linear multigrid algorithm is used to accelerate the convergence of the non-linear elliptic Poisson grid generation method. The …

Satellite Observations Of Upper-Ocean Currents In Terra Nova Bay, Antarctica, Michael Van Woert, Walter Meier, Cheng-Zhi Zou, Andy Archer, Andrea Pellegrini, Paola Grigioni, Cheryl Bertoia
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
Ship and iceberg drifts, along with data from modern satellite-tracked drifting buoys, portray generally northward flow in the southwest Ross Sea. Less is known, however, about the ocean variability in this region. Here we use Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Operational Linescan System (OLS) imagery to describe a cyclonically rotating gyre in Terra Nova Bay, Antarctica (75° S, 165° E). The image sequence is taken from an exceptionally clear, calm, period during winter 1998. Surface currents, derived from tracking drifting ice with a maximum cross-correlation algorithm, were found to be ~20 to 30 cm s-1. Based on scaling …
