Decision Record And Finding Of No Significant Impact For The Atlantic Rim Coalbed Methane Project, Sun Dog Pod, Carbon County, Wyoming, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Land Management
Record of Decisions (WY)
Petroleum Development Corporation (PEDCO) of Gillette, Wyoming, notified the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Rawlins Field Office, that the company proposes to explore and potentially develop coalbed methane (CBM) wells in the Sun Dog Pod Project Area (SDPA) of the Atlantic Rim Project Area (ARPA) in southcentral Wyoming. The Sun Dog proposal is part of the exploration drilling activities that will be considered for the acquisition of data necessary to prepare the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) within the ARPA. Coalbed methane development is very new in the Green River Basin. Public concern has been brought forth regarding the unknowns about …

An Analysis Of Unsolvable Linear Partial Differential Equations Of Order One, Laura J. Fields
An Analysis Of Unsolvable Linear Partial Differential Equations Of Order One, Laura J. Fields
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
It is difficult to underestimate the importance of differential equations in understanding the physical world. These equations, involving not just simple variables like temperature, speed or mass, but also the derivatives, i.e. the rate of change of these variables, are found in nearly every branch of science. Until the mid 20th century, all such equations were thought to be solvable. This was based on the discovery by Leonard Euler that certain differential equations, called ordinary differential equations (ODEs), are indeed always solvable. While ODEs deal with simple conditions, under which some quantity changes with some other quantity and its derivatives, …

Hydrophobic Matching Of Short Gramicidins With Phospholipids, Elizabeth Dunn
Hydrophobic Matching Of Short Gramicidins With Phospholipids, Elizabeth Dunn
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
Given the highly stochastic nature of larval supply, coral reef fish may often settle in sub-optimal habitats with limited prey. This study examines the foraging and territorial habits of a coral feeding butterflyfish, Chaetodon baronessa, living in two contrasting habitats with markedly different coral prey. In exposed front reef habitats, where coral prey was highly abundant, C. baronessa was highly selective in its choice of prey and aggressively maintained small territories. In contrast, in back reef habitats where coral prey was scarcer, C. baronessa was more generalist in its choice of prey, and had larger territories that were only weakly …

A Particle Introduction Experiment In Santa Catalina Basin Sediments: Testing The Age-Dependent Mixing Hypothesis, William L. Fornes, David J. Demaster, Craig R. Smith
A Particle Introduction Experiment In Santa Catalina Basin Sediments: Testing The Age-Dependent Mixing Hypothesis, William L. Fornes, David J. Demaster, Craig R. Smith
Journal of Marine Research
The occurrence of "age-dependent mixing," a process by which recently deposited, food-rich particles undergo more intense bioturbation than older, food-poor particles, could dramatically alter patterns of organic-matter diagenesis in deep-sea sediments. To explicitly test for age-dependent mixing, an in-situ particle introduction experiment was conducted on the bathyal Santa Catalina Basin floor. Mixtures of radioisotope-tagged particles representing a food quality gradient were dispersed in small amounts on the seafloor and sampled over periods of 0 to 594 days. Introduced particle types were all similar in size and included fresh diatoms ("young" particles), surface sediments ("intermediate-age" particles), and particles from 30-cm deep …

A General Framework For Constructing And Analyzing Mixed Finite Volume Methods On Quadrilateral Grids: The Overlapping Covolume Case, So-Hsiang Chou, Do Y. Kwak, Kwang Y. Kim
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
We present a general framework for constructing and analyzing finite volume methods applied to the mixed formulation of second-order elliptic problems on quadrilateral grids. The control volumes, or covolumes, in the grids overlap. An overlapping finite volume method of this type was first introduced by Russell in [T. F. Russell, Tech. report 3, Reservoir Simulation Research Corp., Tulsa, OK, 1995] and was tested for a variety of problems on rectangular and quadrilateral grids in [Z. Cai et al., Comput Geosci., 1 (1997), pp. 289–315]. Later in [S. H. Chou and D. Y. Kwak, SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 37 (2000), pp. …

Effects Of Collection, Transport, And Redeployment Methods On Natural Mortality Of Rangia Cuneata (Mactridae) Used In Biomonitoring Studies, Eugene G. Maurakis, David V. Grimes, William C. Gretes
Virginia Journal of Science
Sporadic, high mortality in test populations of wedge clams (Rangia cuneata) has limited the potential for using this otherwise desirable test organism in biomonitoring studies. To determine whether high mortality was due to ontogenic or experimental variables, a two-phased study was conducted. In phase I, mortality of collected and re-deployed wedge clams, subjected to varying transport conditions, was determined at 7, 14, 21 and 60 days re-deployment. The use of three transport times (1, 2, 3 hr.), two vehicle conditions (open, closed) and three transport treatments (open, closed, iced containers) yielded 18 test groups. Individual test group mortalities …
Gross Brain Morphology In The Yellow Stingray, Urobatis Jamaicensis, Brian K. Walker, Robin L. Sherman
Gross Brain Morphology In The Yellow Stingray, Urobatis Jamaicensis, Brian K. Walker, Robin L. Sherman
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
The yellow stingray, Urobatis jamaicensis (family Urolophidae), a short-lived, relatively small elasmobranch species (35--40 cm total length), is a common inhabitant of hard bottom and coral reef communities in southeastern Florida and many parts of the Caribbean. A paucity of published studies deal with the yellow stingray, none however on the gross morphology of its nervous system. The gross brain structure of the yellow stingray is compared with previously published studies on other batoid elasmobranchs. The external brain structure of Urobatis jamaicensis was similar to that reported for other Dasyatids, including presence of an asymmetric cerebellum. The bilaterally symmetric brain …

Multiple Separations Facilitate Identification Of Protein Variants By Mass Spectrometry, Zhongli Zhang, David L. Smith, Jean B. Smith
Multiple Separations Facilitate Identification Of Protein Variants By Mass Spectrometry, Zhongli Zhang, David L. Smith, Jean B. Smith
Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications
Identification of variant proteins from complex biological samples promises to contribute much to our understanding of the etiology of pathological states. Characterization of variants, due either to genetic mutations in protein sequences or to post-translational modifications, is considerably more difficult than the simple protein identifications typical of most current proteomic investigations. Identification of a few peptides by database retrieval is not adequate when the goal is to have a complete understanding of the modifications of the protein. Although one advantage of mass spectrometry is its ability to obtain specific responses to several components, the complexity of biological samples is often …

Form Invariance And Implicit Parallelism, Michael D. Vose, Alden H. Wright
Form Invariance And Implicit Parallelism, Michael D. Vose, Alden H. Wright
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Holland’s schema theorem (an inequality) may be viewed as an attempt to understand genetic search in terms of a coarse graining of the state space. Stephens and Waelbroeck developed that perspective, sharpening the schema theorem to an equality. Of particular interest is a “form invariance” of their equations; the form is unchanged by the degree of coarse graining. This paper establishes a similar form invariance for the more general model of Vose et al. and uses the attendant machinery as a springboard for an interpretation and discussion of implicit parallelism.

The 17-electron complex (C5Ph5)Cr(CO)3 reacts with halogens (C6H5I•Cl2, Br2, and I2) in C6H6 to yield the dimeric oxidation products [(C5Ph5)Cr(m-X)X]2 as thermally stable solids. Reactions with other chlorinating agents similarly yield [(C5Ph5)CrCl2]2. An X-ray crystal structure of [(C5Ph5)Cr(m-Cl)Cl]2 was obtained. The magnetic properties of the Cl2 bridged dimer have been determined and modeled using the usual isotropic hamiltonian which yields J/k = –30 K. Low-temperature (77 K) Raman spectra of solid [(C5Ph5)CrX2]2 (X = Cl, I) allow assignments to be made for the metal-ring and metal halogen stretching modes in the low frequency region (< 600 cm-1). Tetrahydrofuran (THF) cleaves these dimers to yield complexes of the form (C5Ph5)CrX2(THF).

Reconsidering The Abuse That Dare Not Speak Its Name: A Criticism Of Recent Legal Scholarship Regarding Same-Gender Domestic Violence, Ryiah Lilith
Michigan Journal of Gender & Law
This article argues that while recent legal scholarship effectively disputes the applicability of a gendered model of domestic violence to same-gender abuse, it goes too far in embracing a completely gender-neutral model. Part I explains the theoretical problems with the non-gendered model of domestic violence by examining in detail the research which is most often cited in legal writings in support of this model. Part II briefly explores the pragmatic implications for lesbian and gay male victims of domestic violence when law enforcement policies such as mandatory arrest are based on a model of domestic violence which ignores contexts such …
Teaching And Learning Reform: Curriculum, The Kentucky Department Of Education, & The Educational Professional Standards Board, Jane Clark Lindle
Teaching And Learning Reform: Curriculum, The Kentucky Department Of Education, & The Educational Professional Standards Board, Jane Clark Lindle
Publications
For explanatory purposes, the 1990 Kentucky Education Reform Act (KERA) is generally divided into three major clusters of initiatives: finance, curriculum, and governance. As explained elsewhere in this volume, the systemic complexity of KERA makes any divisions of its initiatives, artificial, and ultimately, insufficient, in describing the decade-old scope of Kentucky’s radical education reforms (Rinehart & Lindle, 1997; Steffy, 1993). For the purposes of this retrospective review of research, this chapter was designed to focus on the very heart of KERA’s purpose, the improvement of teaching and learning. For that reason, this chapter addresses a teaching-learning-oriented KERA initiative, curriculum, and …
What Difference Has Feminism Made To Engineering In The 20th Century?, Pam Mack
What Difference Has Feminism Made To Engineering In The 20th Century?, Pam Mack
Publications
Until the last quarter of the twentieth century women have been very scarce in engineering, so the impact of feminism on engineering might seem like a topic with a very short history. However, somewhat broader definitions of feminism and of engineering bring to light very significant influences of the women’s reform movement of the first half of the twentieth century on industrial and municipal engineering. I first conceptualized this influence as women pushing for regulation that in turn transformed engineering. But as I went deeper into the material I discovered a tremendous amount of travel over the line between reformer …

Can Post T Tauri Stars Be Found? Yes!, Eric L.N. Jensen
Can Post T Tauri Stars Be Found? Yes!, Eric L.N. Jensen
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works
I review the observational challenges of finding post T Tauri stars (PTTS), defined here as low-mass, pre-main-sequence stars with ages of 10(7)-10(8) yr. Such stars are difficult to find because they are less active than younger T Tauri stars, and they may not be associated with molecular gas. They are useful for studying the evolution of circumstellar disks and stellar activity between the 10(6)-yr ages of nearby star-forming regions and the main sequence. However, care must be taken in the search process so that the selection criteria used to locate such stars do not bias the sample used for subsequent …
Disk Clearing In The Young Binary Ak Sco, Eric L.N. Jensen
Disk Clearing In The Young Binary Ak Sco, Eric L.N. Jensen
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works
The pre-main-sequence spectroscopic binary AK Sco is surrounded by a circumbinary disk. Yet while this disk must be somewhat disturbed by the binary at its center, there is no evidence from current data that it has a cleared central hole like those seen in some young binaries, nor that accretion from the outer disk has been cut off. Indeed, most of its spectral and photometric diagnostics are indistinguishable from those of young single stars. Why doesn't this system show any evidence of disturbance of its disk? It may be that the center of the disk is indeed largely cleared, but …
Disks In Young Binary Systems: Unresolved Millimeter-Wave Observations, Eric L.N. Jensen
Disks In Young Binary Systems: Unresolved Millimeter-Wave Observations, Eric L.N. Jensen
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works
Observations at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths are sensitive to the total mass of circumstellar and circumbinary dust in a multiple system, and in some cases single-dish observations can help constrain the location of disk material in spite of their lack of spatial resolution. Young binary stars show a great diversity of disk properties, with a large part of the variation accounted for by binary separation. Many of the closest binaries (those with separations a less than a few AU) harbor massive circumbinary disks. Binaries with a greater than or equal to 100 AU tend to have massive circumstellar disks. In …
