Mathematics As Worship, David J. Stucki
Mathematics As Worship, David J. Stucki
Mathematics Faculty Scholarship
This paper treats worship in a broad, inclusive sense as the primary and necessary response of human beings to their creator. It provides a brief overview of the relationship between mathematics and theology from the Pythagoreans to the present. It argues that all knowledge is contingent upon faith and thus that contemplation of mathematical insights can lead to worship of God.

Jkarelrobot: A Case Study In Supporting Levels Of Cognitive Development In The Computer Science Curriculum, Duane Buck, David J. Stucki
Mathematics Faculty Scholarship
We introduce a new software tool, JKarelRobot, for supporting an Inside/Out pedagogy in introductory programming courses. Extending the original conception of "Karel the Robot", with Bloom's Taxonomy of Educational Objectives as a guiding principle, we have provided a mechanism for designing exercises that are cognitively appropriate to the developmental levels of our students. JKarelRobot is platform independent (written in Java) and language/paradigm independent, supporting Pascal, Java, and Lisp style environments.

Converting A Controlled Vocabulary Into An Ontology: The Case Of Gem, Jian Qin, Stephen Paling
Converting A Controlled Vocabulary Into An Ontology: The Case Of Gem, Jian Qin, Stephen Paling
School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship
The prevalance of digital information raised issues regarding the suitability of conventional library tools for organizing information. The multi-dimensionality of digital resources requires a more versatile and flexible representation to accommodate intelligent information representation and retrieval. Ontologies are used as a solution to such issues in many application domains, mainly due to their ability explicitly to specify the semantics and relations and to express them in a computer understandable language. Conventional knowledge organization tools such as classifications and thesauri resemble ontologies in a way that they define concepts and relationships in a systematic manner, but they are less expressive than …

Comparative Study Of The Effectiveness Of Cross-Age Peers And Community Volunteers As Tutors For At-Risk First And Second Grade Students, Tyler B. Collins
Comparative Study Of The Effectiveness Of Cross-Age Peers And Community Volunteers As Tutors For At-Risk First And Second Grade Students, Tyler B. Collins
Theses & Honors Papers
An experimental study was conducted in a rural, public elementary school in order to compare the effectiveness of tutoring by adult community volunteers and ninth grade cross age peers for at-risk first and second grade students. All first and second grade students took pretests for overall phonological awareness, reading fluency, and sight word recognition. After eight weeks in an intensive, Direct Instruction, one-on-one reading program, students received posttests. Data were analyzed to determine statistically significant differences between those tutored by an adult community volunteer and those tutored by a ninth grade cross-age peer. Considerations and recommendations for further research are …

In The Shadow Of The Accretion Disk: Higher Resolution Imaging Of The Central Parsec In Ngc 4261, B. Glenn Piner, Dayton L. Jones, Ann E. Wehrle, David L. Meier
Physics
The physical conditions in the inner parsec of accretion disks believed to orbit the central black holes in active galactic nuclei can be probed by imaging the absorption (by ionized gas in the disk) of background emission from a radio counterjet. We report high angular resolution VLBI observations of the nearby (~40 Mpc) radio galaxy NGC 4261 that confirm free-free absorption of radio emission from a counterjet by a geometrically thin, nearly edge-on disk at 1.6, 4.8, and 8.4 GHz. The angular width and depth of the absorption appears to increase with decreasing frequency, as expected. We derive an average …

Drama As A Strategy For The Social Development Of Special Needs Students, Mack Smith
Drama As A Strategy For The Social Development Of Special Needs Students, Mack Smith
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Today, Special Education or Special Needs Programs continue to be a highly debated subject. Parents, teachers, school officials, and policy-makers grapple with the issue of Special Needs Programs? What qualifies an individual as a special needs student? What types of curriculum will be taught in a Special Needs Program? For the purpose of this research paper, Special Needs Programs are programs implemented for the education of students with psychological or physical disorders. Kathleen Stassen Berger, author of The Developing Person Through Childhood, describes children with special needs as "Children for whom learning new skills and developing friendships are hampered by …

Statistics For Wildlifers: How Much And What Kind?, Douglas H. Johnson, Terry L. Shaffer, Wesley E. Newton
Statistics For Wildlifers: How Much And What Kind?, Douglas H. Johnson, Terry L. Shaffer, Wesley E. Newton
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
Quantitative methods are playing increasingly important roles in wildlife ecology and, ultimately, management. This change poses a challenge for wildlife practitioners and students who are not well educated in mathematics and statistics. Here we give our opinions on what wildlife biologists should know about statistics, while recognizing that not everyone is inclined mathematically. For those who are, we recommend that they take mathematics coursework at least through calculus and linear algebra. They should take statistics courses that are focused conceptually, stressing the "why" rather than the "how" of doing statistics. For less mathematically oriented wildlifers, introductory classes in statistical techniques …
Profitability Of Crop Rotations In Iowa In A Stress Environment, Derrick N. Exner, R. M. Cruse
Profitability Of Crop Rotations In Iowa In A Stress Environment, Derrick N. Exner, R. M. Cruse
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Small grains crops have traditionally been included in Midwestern cropping systems, but their use is restricted by uncertain yields, poor prices, and lack of on-farm uses in operations without livestock. We compared the corn (Zea mays L.)-soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) crop rotation to actual or simulated three-yr rotations at two sites in Iowa between 1986 and 1989. Water was generally more limiting than was nitrogen, which produced minimal response in the corn to which it was applied. April-November precipitation at Nashua, Iowa ranged from 59 to 111 % of average, while at Des Moines, Iowa it was 77% of …

Toxicity Of Cedar River Water And Sediment To Larval Walleye, Todd A. Phillips, Robert C. Summerfelt
Toxicity Of Cedar River Water And Sediment To Larval Walleye, Todd A. Phillips, Robert C. Summerfelt
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Although all anthropogenic stressors affecting aquatic ecosystems have not been isolated, suspended solids, sediment, and pesticides are believed to be major factors in agroecosystems. In the spring of 1998 and 1999, static 48-h tests were conducted to determine the toxicity of water and sediment collected from the Cedar River to prolarval, postlarval I, and postlarval II walleye (Sttzostedzon vitreum). River water and sediment were not more toxic to any larval stage of walleye than reference water and sediment. Cedar River sediments, suspended solids, and water were examined for occurrence of the most common herbicides and insecticides in Iowa. No pesticides …

We present evidence for a change in electron-phonon coupling across a bulk phase transition. Below the lattice stiffening transition at around 160 K, there is a change in the diffracted peak width observed by neutron and X-ray scattering techniques. Also, the electronic band structure of the copolymer is shifting in binding energy below 160 K, decreasing the density of states near the Fermi level. The value of the effective Debye temperature above the transition temperature is approximately 50 K, while below 160 K, the value of the Debye parameter is 245 K. We postulate that the coupling between electrons and …

Publication Projects With Esl/Efl Students:A Handbook For Teachers, April A. Minerich
MA TESOL Collection
This paper is based on my experience teaching courses in which students created publications. I frequently teach both newsletter classes and memory book classes to students of other languages who are studying English in an intensive program. I have also taught classes in which ESL students produced student directories. I have participated in developing cookbooks. I also publish student work in certain classes that I teach.
It describes the process I use to do publication projects. I include theory to support the soundness of this idea in ESL/EFL instruction. The strategy for implementing the class is described. It then moves …
Movement, Rhythms, And Music: Active Curriculums For Teaching Foreign Languages To Beginning Learners, Patricia Guillemin Gregory
Movement, Rhythms, And Music: Active Curriculums For Teaching Foreign Languages To Beginning Learners, Patricia Guillemin Gregory
MA TESOL Collection
Our task as educators is to fit our teaching methods to our learners. Middle school students have specific characteristics that can seem to interfere with learning. Among these characteristics are a bounty of energy and restlessness. The key for the teacher is to channel this energy into learning activities.
To understand a class and develop a teaching strategy for that class, the teacher should analyze the learning styles of the students. From the results of this analysis, the teacher can build effective lesson plans which match the trends that appear in the class.
With this data in hand, the teacher …
